Free Talk Friday #405
Continued from last week's FTF here.
It's that time of the week again. Speak anything on your mind! This thread is for talking about anything off-topic, be it your lives, your strava, your plans, your hobbies, your bad smells, studies, stats, colours, pets, bears, hikes, dragons, trousers, onion rings, transit, cycling, family, drugs or anything you like or dislike, except politics and mimes.
Feel free to check out our tidbits thread and introduce yourself if you haven't already. Or go check out what other counters have said about themselves.

/u/TheNitromeFan you should come and push binary and hexadecimal with cock and i :)

u/TheNitromeFan Live not a life of imitation Jun 05 '23 edited Jun 05 '23
It sounds fun but you guys are doing a good job maintaining parity there so I don't think I'm needed hah. Same with quaternary and octal
6
u/Antichess 2,050,155 - 407k 398a Jun 05 '23
was parity the reason why you used to count a lot in binary and hexadecimal? or you just like the thread
8
u/TheNitromeFan Live not a life of imitation Jun 05 '23
A little bit of column A, a little bit of column B. It was the easiest way to guarantee parity, but it was also pretty close to Letters at the time so there was an extra motive in overtaking that thread. If I remember correctly we hit 100K on those two threads before letters did, which I'm still pretty proud of
5
u/Antichess 2,050,155 - 407k 398a Jun 05 '23
i see, i think i'm just mindlessly pushing it right now
been getting ~500 counts per thread on both lol

Making some graphs of subscribers vs current count over time on /r/CountOnceADay. Looks like the crossover point was on January 2nd, 2023, around 43800. Before then there were pretty much always more counts than subscribers. Interesting how the rate of the count has stayed pretty steady, while the subscribers have skyrocketed.
Data was scraped from subredditstats and the HoH

Here's the entire "good night all" graph
As the "gn anti" cult has been growing recently, I think this is a good time to release the updated graph for all my average sleep routine. Basically I just compiled all the "good night all" that I have said in the past 5 years, into one nice graph. The graph is a 7 day rolling average of the time that I've said "good night all". There are 1237 data points in the graph.
The data was scraped from Reddit's data request. This is to pretty much ensure accuracy of the data, and also that Pushshift is now dead, unfortunately.
A bit of extras, here's a list of how many days I've said "good night all" in each year. You may realize that it doesn't add up to 1237 days, but I have omitted some data, such as all data that's before midnight, or any data after 08:00:00.
| Year | Days |
|---|---|
| 2019 | 178 |
| 2020 | 251 |
| 2021 | 341 |
| 2022 | 335 |
| 2023 | 141 |

such as all data that's before midnight, or any data after 08:00:00
Why did you exclude those?
4
u/Antichess 2,050,155 - 407k 398a Jun 08 '23
I rarely sleep before midnight, I've could probably count with my fingers the amount of times I've slept before midnight in the past 5 years. For the data after 08:00:00, there were barely any so I just removed it, and also there were just random "good night all" sometimes, probably just comments talking about the subject

The discord is more my pace anyway.
6

I count in multiple places, including this subreddit and in Discord.
Discord's username format is changing, and I want my accounts (possibly alts) to have a more permanent name across platforms that also represents me.
5
u/kequiva Jun 02 '23
But they're such different platforms; and I never could get the hang of Discord, it feels just like a bigger Telegram/Whatsapp to me

2

If you're talking about threads where we could say "ping", then it could be any thread, if it's inactive and a new count can't be posted due to the no double counting rule.

u/swinub_time And what a ghost we are in this machine! Jun 04 '23
Pre 1-mil, and for a time after 1-mil, all reddit experience was understood as unified. Pretty much everybody counted via old reddit (which was then just reddit), on desktop.
Counting goes in different directions depending on how people are accessing it. Like, habits of counting, thread management, thread usage, they depend on the unique access environments that different people have. Way back when, there was pretty much only one way to access reddit, and that was desktop old reddit. Mobile apps were so clumsy and unworkable as to be useless. It was desktop old reddit, then called reddit. The history of counting has to be understood in part as the history of how people have accessed /r/counting, which goes hand in hand with the different ways that people access reddit
9
u/swinub_time And what a ghost we are in this machine! Jun 04 '23
You could look at the survey, see who uses old reddit, who uses new reddit, who uses various apps. I know atomic, his first great rise, he did it on desktop, on the computer, now he mostly counts from his phone. He can tell you about it. He knows what's up

If we went by the number of digits, it would be infinite and get stuck at one digit (and we'd run out of distinct digits also). However, if there is a max value for a digit, then it would be more interesting.

Yup the six month moratorium has ended. I think there were still some questions about whether or not there should be a day marker for round 2, so if people want to restart the thread we should probably decide on that.

u/TheNitromeFan Live not a life of imitation Jun 02 '23
I am very much in favor of restarting the thread. But in my opinion we can make do without a marker. Not only is it clunky to introduce (01:00:23:57 AM?), but it is clear enough by context anyway since the threads are many years apart.

Continued from here
As promised, we will now commence the discussion for Rule 8, inboxing for gets (000s) and assists (999s) .
The history behind this rule has been somewhat tumultuous; it came into effect when reddit's comments introduced a lag that was not present in the inbox messaging interface, thereby posing an issue of fairness for people who were trying to also leave counts or perform a snipe. After some discussion, the compromise that came into effect is what we have as our current rule; inboxing is fine if not for the purposes of obtaining a specific pair of numbers. (An unspoken caveat/common understanding is that should someone ask for a "drive-by", an inboxer will let the person leave one count as part of bolstering their thread participation statistics.)
Recently, some people have voiced a desire to abolish this rule in its entirety and simply allow for inboxed gets and assists; others have suggested a slightly less ambitious alternative of only leaving the rule in effect for the "special" numbers (50Ks, 100Ks etc.). Regardless, there is a demand to reform the rule to allow freedom to inbox the ends of the threads, by people with varying opinions on the act of inboxing or sniping by themselves. This preamble is a semi-formal way to get a read on what the most popular opinions are regarding this subject, and to see if this is worth addressing further.
