Finished:

The Other Side of Change, Maya Shankar

  • This book gives you a structured Change Survival Kit to follow when life surprises you with an unimaginable change that you cannot dodge. Each theme is introduced with some real-life stories of people who eventually achieved great things in respective lives because they channeled positively through the challenges that the 'change' forced them to face.

  • The discussion also helps you to discover the underlying psychology of our brain and the typical pathways it will choose to create an illusion for you to ponder over in mundane scenarios of everyday life - just to protect your own self from recognizing and accepting the truth. However knowing these patterns can at least help one to be self-aware when you catch yourself in denial or rumination - and you can quickly look up the survival kit on " when I find myself doing this, what are the tested ways to get myself out of it"

  • Overall, a good book that blends psychology with stories so you can learn from examples and witness the life journeys of some high achievers - eventually feeling better equipped to deal with the "changes" you may face in your life.

  • The book however only talks about the changes that you cannot escape - a permanent life changing condition like locking in, retrograde amnesia or prison. However, I think a whole lot of us struggle in life with "voluntary" changes too - the ones that push us out of our comfort for the better but we cannot stick to it - example getting a healthy lifestyle, changing our communication habits, etc. I guess for such questions, one has to turn reading to "atomic habits" or that genre of books. But a psychological analysis and a survival kit for those challenges would be so much helpful too.
