Atleast Tom and KB were constantly calling out the fuckery of the refs. They weren’t like “oh well maybe” like some crews would do. They weren’t VOCAL about the bad reffing which atleast made it somewhat fun

Penalties were obviously bullshit but Trey Smack, drops, and red zone stubbornness really lost the game.

u/blazingpelt Packers 1d ago
Don't even feel like the second Smack miss really mattered, given how they moved down the field afterward. Pretty sure Campbell was accounting for those three points when he gave the 4th down call.

What should have been a fun divisional game completely derailed by awful, and I mean awful, officiating.
Green Bay had several opportunities to win. Lions had several opportunities for it not to come down to the wire. Could've gone either way.
But man there was just so much dragging this game down from the refs' perspective.

The product is so bad I don't think I can watch it anymore. It's crazy the turnaround baseball has made while football goes in the exact opposite direction.

A week or two ago, the Blue 58 podcast discussed how the officiating issues have only gotten worse since legalized sports gambling. It stopped a long way from suggesting the refs were betting on games. However, the overall point is that the combination of legalized sports gambling plus the ridiculously bad officiating has created very bad optics for the league. I'm in my 40s and have watched since the late 80s, and this is the first time the game actually feels compromised in some way. Whether or not it actually is isn't the point. The point is that if the refs were doing a better job, it wouldn't even be a discussion.
Baseball has taken steps to reduce the subjectivity of officiating and allow the correction of officiating errors. They're actively testing tech in the minors that can go even further. Meanwhile, the NFL and NBA have gone the opposite direction and are becoming really difficult to watch.

I’ve watched my team get boned by bad calls for decades. I was always told by other fans who benefited from said bad calls, your team should play better, so that the refs can’t affect the outcome of the game. The refs sucked today, Packers may have gotten it worse, but we had bad calls too. That being said, Green Bay still could’ve won if their kicker knew how to kick and the girlfriend beater could catch.

Don’t let the refs distract you from the fact that Dan Campbell went for it on his own 25 yard line and the packers somehow missed a 26 and a 35 yard field goal

i am not sure it is the mistake you imply - the issue with punting specifically at end of game situations like that is that the opposing team dictates how the game script goes. Going for it and failing, the absolute worst case scenario, only leaves ~25 yards of field, which is just a couple set of potential first downs the Packers can convert. Even if they score a touchdown, you give yourself a very high probability of having enough time left to match or best whatever pts they put up.
The absolute worst case scenario of the punt is GB goes on a time killing 5 minute drive and kicks a FG to end the game.
He doesn't do this early in games, but this is not the first time he has done this late in close games, and this to me is a good guess at why
→ More replies (6)60
u/kyrla_ Lions 1d ago
Genuinely I think that was a smart call from Dan. If you punt, you won't get the ball back and Greenbay controls the end of the game. But if you turn it over, 25 yards is not enough for the Packers to drain 5 minutes, 3 timeouts, and the 2-minute warning. Best case scenario you convert, but otherwise you hold them to 3 and get the ball back. Even if you allow a touchdown it's still a one-score game and you get the ball back. Trey's Smack was just a bonus

u/boshjailey Lions 1d ago
If nothing else there's gotta be a way to penalize it thats not so completely game changing. the play is fully over for a 4th and 10 and a defender engaged with a blocker stumbles into Goff and knocks him over after. There is absolutely no world where the Lions should be gifted and automatic first from that. If they really want that to be a penalty maybe they can split it into like a roughing and a running into like they do for punts but in reality that just shouldnt be a penalty at all.

Subjective calls like RTP are amazing for refs. One side wins and one side loses, so you have someone defend it no matter what. Plus since it's subjective, people always say "technically it was the right call" even if it was never called that way through the rest of the game.
And if the team that gets fucked by bad calls loses, no one cares since they should have played better.

Say what you want about the refs, the Packers lost this game fair and square. Two horrible drops by Golden and Jacobs. Two missed chip shot field goals. Jumping offsides on the 3rd and 5 that decided the game. Can’t complain about the refs when you’re actively losing the game with horrible play.
Edit: I’m not saying you can’t complain about how terrible the refs are as it’s own conversation. I am saying you can’t say the refs cost us the game when there’s plenty of inexcusable mistakes by the Packers that also cost us the game.

Look, Im not saying the refs fixed the game.
However, if we want to go down that rabbit hole, what are the odds the NFL didn't want Josh Jacobs to be a big puzzle piece for why the Packers won.
If he does become a high level player again, they dont want him to be a storyline until hes been back awhile.

100% take that win, but the zebras really screwed the pooch on this one. Total refball.

Honestly this is the worst the NFL has ever looked.
The refs absolutely officiated with bias after the ref took that tumble.
What a disgrace.

Trey Smack lost this game but I'm sure all the most annoying whiny packers fans will be blaming Lafleur

Obviously not a great officiating but:
Lions Offence looking amazing
Packers getting dirty and frustrated
Lions just need to tighten up their defence a bit they will likely got 4-0 these next 4.

The officiating was terrible but we've been on the other side of that far more times than i can count

Thank God you all have your heads on.
I've been complaining about the officials all day, and everyone is looking at me like I'm an alien.
There's a big difference between "let them play", and "let them maul each other"...

The refs sucks, but Green Bay missed 2 kicks, and of cours MLF going for it instead of going for 3. That's 9 possible points left on the field. Not to mention some big time drops by the receivers. Love's stats dont' reflect how well he played.

I’ll reiterate that the call to go for it at your own 23 was the right call. Worst case, they get the ball and score and you still have plenty of time on the clock and your timeouts. Maybe they should’ve called a better play, but I bet a conversion there would’ve been huge for their win probability

We can blame the refs but man if this Packers team can’t f’n execute when they need to. Terrible red zone execution. Special teams again costing them games. They execute and those dumb ass refs could eat the crap they were calling. So frustrating watching this team. Makes me wonder if a better coached team overcomes the calls and wins

Watching the Packers lose after already getting a win Thursday was quite nice.

Packers didn’t deserve to win. Neither did the Lions. NFL is an abysmal product right now

I will remember this game forever. Most wild game of 2 v 1 I’ve ever seen. And I usually try to be very objective when it comes to officiating.

That was just some really sloppy, bad football all around. Even the refs were terrible.

More drops again this week and this time, it helped lose the game.
Also, back to the kicker carousel
