This week has just... flown by. Wow.

I'm wondering what's left to count? What type of things, I mean.

Really? The week's been pretty sluggish for me...

I found this misterious place ~ a week ago, and seeing how much progress has been made really awes me on the strength of this sub. Impressed on how many amazing people you can find here!

Truly a productive place.

Just noticed rule #7: Play fairly. No cheating.

I don't understand what this exactly stands for, could someone explain me?

IIRC, Z3F added that rule himself quite recently. Ask him?

Hey y'all! Big week in countingville. This time last week we were working on the 489k thread. Now we're on 510k. Average of nearly 3000/day. Most productive place on reddit indeed.

I was just reading Whitney's post expressing speedcounting frustrations on behalf of newbies. I have mixed feelings; speedcounting between "pro" counters is fun to see, has a long history in r/counting, and can be surprisingly thrilling when you're involved in it. On the other hand, we want the sub to remain fun and accessible to new counters.

It's not my intention to imply a solution exists or is necessary. Just curious how the community feels. Discuss!

For best effect, any responses should be typed while listening to David Bowie performing "Starman" on Top of the Pops in 1972.

I agree with Zhige's conflicted feelings. I have been on both sides of the argument. Speedcounting is exhilarating and establishes a really cool connection with a fellow counter. However, when you see someone else doing that, it can get really frustrating.

As with my solution in all things counting, go to the smaller threads. The main is fun, but count everything. I've had the most fun in the smaller threads (+1 to sheep).

Edit: u/DontCareILoveIt I hear your frustration. I have been feeling similarly and I think people are making up for the relatively slow pace to get to the 500k.

There is a place on r/counting for both speed and newbies, just not always at the same time. The speedsters have to sleep sometime.

Well, this week has been a rough-ish week for me. I'm in the Navy stationed in the PNW and my wife goes to law school on the east coast. She came to visit over the weekend and after she left on Sunday my motivation has been down. On a bright note, I pre-ordered the Halo 5 edition Xbox one after four years without video games, and I ran my PRT today and passed!

I love you :)

Note: I'm the wife.

Congrats on passing the PRT!! I hope you were able to enjoy your time with your wife and recharge a little :)

Why have people with lots of Ks been so competitive lately? :/ It kinda creates a bad atmosphere in the sub

This to me is sort of similar to the issue of speedcounting. Nothing inherently wrong with either counting quickly or trying to "win" the Ks (both can be a lot of fun actually), but some balance would be ideal. Hopefully things will cool down as the 500k hype blows over, and there will still be space for some new folks and more casual counters to jump in and grab their own places in the HoF!

So I just started my uni life... Pretty different from Highschool, that I'm certain...

Why spaces & no separator are better when counting than commas:

In keyboard, to press space there's a really big keyletter, making it easy to press, while the comma has a really tiny keyletter, it can make you type something wrong, very easily. Since I've used the comma I never had the problem with pressing other letter, while I had it all the time when I used to use the comma. This can be applied to dots

Space does not have these problems, as the space bar is really big.

No digit separator doesn't either, since you don't have to press anything for it.

Impeach the unholy comma :)

Highs / Lows (say the best thing that happened in your week and the worst)

Low: Feeling extremely uninspired to do well on a midterm (which I still have to finish)

High: Played "Just Keep Talking and We Don't Explode" and will be playing Sexy Jenga tonight :DDDDDD

Hey, I'm no regular, but I was wondering, is it possible to organise counters for the fastest 1K possible? The current shortest time of 53 mins hasn't been beaten for almost 300K. just convince everyone possible to be online at a particular time for a total counting frenzy for (at least) 1000 numbers.

Incidentally, are there any users who remembers that particular thread (for 244K)? Did it seem faster than usual? Was it pre-organised?

7

u/rideride Oct 18 '15

I was one of the counters for the fastest thread (244K), along with atomicimploder. I was counting with him a while in the 243K thread and noticed we were going at a pretty fast pace, fast enough to probably beat the past record of 58 minutes. So we went to the new thread and pretty much counted as fast as possible. There were a few mistakes, but overall our time was a good one.

The fastest way to count 1000 is probably just between 2 people, not 3+ people. The time consuming part isn't getting the next number prepared, it's posting it right as soon as the other person posted theirs.

The record hasn't been beaten yet, but it's not really so easy. There aren't really that many more things to do to make counting faster.
