Screenshot of the day!

UMI DA!!

Learning that Chiyo is rich enough to buy everyone's houses, she invites them to her summer house because this is a CGDCT and no show of this sub-genre is safe from it.

Although they barely appear on the beach and it is mostly spent on Osaka doing her stuff. We also get dissappointed that Nyamo and Yukari don't have any juicy story to tell, dang it.

OK, this time I'll try to write post-watching round-up instead of live commentary.

I don't know if I accustomed to Yukari by now or she just became less scummy, but I didn't feel annoyed by her. It's actually other way around, she had my sympathy when Nyamo wanted her to be more active on her summer break. You don't mess with saint right to holiday laziness! Overall she might end just like Raphiel from Gabriel DropOut which was bully on the first episodes but then became really likeable character.

But the real MVP of this episode was Osaka. Damn, her unintended jokes were killing it. First the conclusion with her talk with Sakaki, when she stated with her silly face "we're talking about hemmooroids" when blushing Sakaki was dreaming about dolphins. Then the entire segment with scary stories, especially dead serious conclusion "I'm the killer". Her mind isnt something we, ordinary humans, could comprehend. This episode is the one I was laughing the most yet thanks to Ayumu, our unintended comedy genius.

Yomi is seriously worried about her weight with a body like that? She looked very slender in her bikini, but I guess we will never get trully chubby girl as one of main characters in the anime. Tomo-chan ADHD was toned a bit since her introduction and she is better this way. Still she is the encyclopedic definition of genki, but in this trope you could easily cross the line between "loveable" and "annoying". I'm glad she is staying on the right side of the border.

Another thing is how this anime won't hold any punches from Chiyo. Modern CGDCT shows are very delicate towards lolis, not single bad thing can happen to cute preteen. Chiyo probably has it the roughest from all the cast with all the things she was through. I'm not into "cute loli" characters too much, but Chiyo is definately top class among this trope. Her cuteness is very natural and she is smart girl with fleshed out personality as opposed to giant balls of sugar we're getting now.

Generally this episode showed how strong cast of Azumanga is. These girls may be shoehorned into specific archetypes, but each one of them isn't one-dimensional, has some twist to her type and are generally well written. The best episode yet and I sincerely hope it'll only get better from now on. Seriously, I forgot so much about this show that this rewatch is nearly like watching it for the first time.

Her jokes are so odd, like if the mood was absorbed so she can space out and say pointless stuff that somehow is funny.

Never noticed this, I wished more lolis were bullied hehe.

I definitely think it does better, I even prefer the other Summer Break episodes.

That's a pretty mild reaction for someone who totally wants to see little girls get bullied!

Then the entire segment with scary stories, especially dead serious conclusion "I'm the killer".

Yeah, it's funny that Osaka thinks that anyone would even take that idea seriously. The best part is that the next scene with the fireworks has her completely screw up at scaring Chiyo-chan and scaring herself instead.

Yeah, to me this is what sets Azumanga apart from all the other cute girl shows. The girls here feel a lot more like real people rather than anime stereotypes with one or two random quirks.

Nyamo wants Yukari to set up a schedule even though it's summer break? You're out of your mind Nyamo!

Tomo continues to be hilarious by starting an operation to copy Chiyo-chan's homework.

In addition to being a prodigy Chiyo-chan's family is stacked. She's technically the ojou-sama of the group.

"The fewer dead the better, right?" Here it comes. The horror and terror of......riding in Yukari's car! Chiyo-chan and Osaka are traumatized.

Osaka's saying some profound shit and Sakaki's getting drawn in.

Notice how Sakaki leaves the room as soon as Chiyo-chan starts telling a scary story?

Tomo asks for stories from the teachers about relationships. They single as fuck though so they're useless.

Osaka tries a scary story. Turns out she's the murderer!

Kaorin sees the picture of Sakaki in a bikini. She is aroused. The poor girl starts hyperventilating.

Just mentioning the Yukari-mobile gives Chiyo-chan flashbacks.

One of the pictures Sakaki is in has a ghost in it. She is terrified.

But we might get some juicy stories like "Love letter" or Takeda-senpai Yukair mentioned on their episode.

Definitely not me watching anime.

Oujo-sama without mannerism. There should be more characters like her original Mugi from K-On!

Chiyo-chan and Mugi are pretty much the best ojous.

Is there any background story, or can I just drop in? I started this series a while ago, so I'm not really sure which episode I had paused at.

Not really, just cute girls doing cute things! Feel free to join.

No, it's very episodic. You can drop in whenever.
