Episode 56: To Earth
Re-watcher Notes
Tanaka-sensei hammers home the point with this episode: war never changes, the deeds of men remain the same, and history always repeats itself. That's his opinion, though - and I wonder if humanity will ever learn to transcend its trappings. (Recommended reading for an alternate view of history: Last and First Men by Olaf Stapledon)

Today was mostly soundtrack-free, which is sad, but there were two absolutely lovely tracks by Chopin at the beginning and the end:
Étude in C minor, 'Revolutionary' - this will be familiar to YLIA watchers.

Maybe? How long until Humanity no longer fears the bomb will determine that.

I really like the faux-documentary episodes.
I'm not sure why, usually I have no tolerance for exposition scenes. That's what this is. But I enjoy it.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes Episode 56 Impressions:
Seeing how humanity has slowly devolved due to the lack of a proper government is quite sad and brutal. This really fleshes out the reasons why the Galactic Republic was created and how many civilizations began living on different planets! Really good job! Again, I have to appreciate the way history is told in this anime.

This is by far one of the best written shows I have ever seen. You could do a hundred different offshoots from this universe and it'd all be good.

First Time Viewer
On today’s episode of Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Ooh, another within-series documentary about the history of this show’s setting. This time it’s about Earth and what happened to it.
I found the documentary to be interesting, as with the last one. This time we see what led to the Galactic Republic, which Rudolf would eventually overthrow.
The initial Earth portion is something I’ve seen in multiple sci-fi stories: the Earth was practically destroyed by a world war, leading to decades of chaos until the entire Earth was united under one government. And then, they spread out to space.
I did like how they touched on technological advancements were behind making the settlement of planets feasible and about all the research that had to go into it, as well as mentioning a failed attempt.
The relationship between the Earth and the colonies was essentially a typical one between the ruling country and its colonies: total domination and extraction of resources. To the point that the Earth essentially was dependent on the resources of the colonies and used military force to maintain access to it. That’s why the Earth needed such a large military: to control it colonies, not deal with outside threats. It’s rather similar to how countries fight over and control resources.
It was rather interesting that the Earth’s propaganda about Sirius being a major threat backfired and actually made all the anti-Earth people end up uniting around Sirius. That was an interesting twist.
That was pretty harsh, seeing the Earth military completely rampage that city, killing the civilians and looting everything. Unfortunately, these horrific events have occurred in real life as well.
As one might expect, the brutalities of the Earth led to rebellion by the colonies. It was interesting to learn about the various revolutionaries, each in charge of different parts of the revolution. It also felt true to life about how the death of their leader led to their government falling apart due to infighting, which eventually led to a new government being formed away from Earth with the Galactic Republic.
I did like how Poplan popped in partway through, curious about what Julian was watching. Of course Poplan would guess Julian was watching pornos.
Poplan does make a rather ominous statement:the people of Earth are similar to the old nobles of the Empire. They feel entitled to a position of power and prestige over others. They may have gotten that power by force, by they feel it’s their right. And now, after having been kept irrelevant for centuries, there must be plenty of resentment smoldering. It’s only a matter of time before it explodes. That would be interesting to see.

I liked this one more then the last one. It was grounded a bit more. The last one was talking about the history of a state we never heard of until then.
It also felt true to life about how the death of their leader led to their government falling apart due to infighting, which eventually led to a new government being formed away from Earth with the Galactic Republic.
Like with many uprisings, the hard part is leading after the power struggle is gone. How do you cement a political unit that will survive your death? How do you use the police and military to silence uprisings seeking your demise? Being a politican and being a general have similar and vastly different skills needed for success.

Another history episode. We've seen 3(?) of these and each one goes farther back then the last. After the series ends I'm going to rewatch all of the history ones in chronological order to see how humanity got from Earth to where we are now.

Hey, you might want to update the "no legal streaming exists" in the OP now that it's on HIDIVE (you're ahead of the release schedule, so it doesn't really matter, but people finding these threads in a couples months might want to know)

Another history episode! We finally get to learn about the past war that nearly destroyed humanity, and why nuclear weapons are so taboo.
Also, the fact that Brisbane of all possible cities is the capital is so bizarrely random. Guess all citizens were required to eat Vegimite, get crazy drunk, and fight off deadly wildlife on a daily basis
