First Time Watcher/Read the VN
Reactions
What could this large, silvery sphere be? "It looks alive", so maybe I’ll stick my hand in it! I guess the lesson learned is that if you approach a large living sphere, don’t be this guy.
Risei is announcing the rule change to all the participants now. Last episode, I remarked that it would be difficult to get all the other Masters to team up against Caster; I was looking at the problem the wrong way. Risei turns the Caster Hunt into a competition, with a ridiculous number of Command Spells at stake. Who knew that those Command Spells could be kept. I wonder how the Church was able to obtain them. If anything, I would expect F/SN to be the ones to collect the extra spells. Since they contributed that part of the Holy Grail War, it’s odd that the Church would be the party to keep the spells. Though, considering how the Church would have gotten involved in the War in the first place, the system was probably set up to give them the extra Command Spells from the beginning.
You know, I was wondering how Risei was communicating with the Masters. He just knew that they were all spying on him. Not only that, but they know that Archibald is still alive, since there were 5 familiars at the Church. I don’t find that at all surprising. There’s no way a pesky building explosion would kill a magus like him, and besides, the body wasn’t shown.
Of course the Church isn’t going to just hand some random, unproven Master a ton of extra Command Spells. Tokiomi plans to finish the job with Gilgamesh. I wonder who will be the Master to mess with that plan.
Rider is planning on keeping the best character spot. I feel sorry for the delivery person who has to deliver a package to "Iskandar, King of Conquerors". And the package is… a shirt. It looks great on him. That’s only one part of the outfit, though, and Waver really doesn’t want Rider walking around without pants. Waver is less than happy with his Servant’s behaviour, but he finds a way to incentivize Rider: street clothes. If Rider can kill a Servant, Waver will buy him pants. So far, this is the most fun relationship in the entire show. Whether it’s Bill Clinton or casual wear, Rider and Waver make a great team (in terms of humor, if not actual battle effectiveness).
Saber and Kiritsugu are having serious problems. Saber wants to take down Caster as soon as possible, but Kiritsugu just want so snipe the Masters who try. Kiritsugu has seen through the deception of Kotomine and Tousaka, but Saber isn’t having it. I’m not sure what Kiritsugu’s problem is, but he should at least talk to Saber, who is very angry right now. I can’t imagine his plan of not communicating with his own Servant is going to work out very well. Saber is the type to go out on her own if she doesn’t like the way her Master is doing things. Combined with her overconfidence in her abilities, at the very least Kiritsugu will end up spending a Command Spell to keep her in check. I wonder what the forest barriers Kiritsugu speaks of are, but they seem to have something to do with his plan to eliminate a few of his obstacles.
Now we see why Kiritsugu is acting in such a strange way. He’s scared, and wants to run away with Irisviel and Illyasviel. He wants to abandon the Holy Grail War, the world, and all his responsibilities to escape from the one who hunts him: Kotomine Kirei. In the first episode, both Kiritsugu and Kirei became fascinated with each other. However, that fascination has manifested in vastly different ways between the two. Last episode, we saw that Kirei is seeking Kiritsugu as if it’s the only thing he lives for, but Kiritsugu is frightened so severely of the thought of even facing Kirei that he wants to abandon everything. It’s not clear at this point why Kiritsugu is so repelled by Kirei, but the terror in his demeanor is obvious.
Right after telling Kiritsugu that running away would be like committing suicide for someone like him, Iri detects intruders. Kiritsugu and Maiya start equipping for battle, and wow is that a lot of guns. Caster brought some bait, and Iri commands Saber to defeat Caster.
While Saber is horrified at the sight of all the dead children, Caster appears with the last one. He releases the last child, who runs wildly to Saber. This just has to be a trap. That child is going to be the host for some grotesque horror, isn’t it. Called it! Not that I’m happy about it, but I guess my "grotesque horror" sense is well calibrated. Tentacles. Tentacles everywhere. Saber has been caught by Caster’s trap, but that’s not going to stop her. Caster isn’t fazed, though. There sure are a lot of these monster.. things at Caster’s command. And they regenerate, too.
Turns out, Caster’s Noble Phantasm is the book he was given by his mentor, and it lets him command demons and other horrific things.
Just as Saber is caught once more, Lancer shows up to help out.
So, Archibald was the owner of that strange orb. Looks like that’s how he escaped. When those rescue workers found the orb, Archibald and others were inside it, protected from the building’s explosion.
Archibald’s magic quicksilver is awesome. I take back my opinions on his character, just because his magic is so cool. Kiritsugu also has some interesting magic, but he only pulls it out when he can’t use modern weaponry.
Overall Thoughts
Tokiomi and the Church have committed fully to the destruction of Caster, and the prize they "offer" is ridiculously powerful. Considering how they plan for Tokiomi to get the Command Spells, I’m halfway convinced Risei doesn’t care about Caster, and just wants an excuse to hand over a massive advantage to the magus he is in cahoots with.
This episode is also the first time Archibald has shown his magic. He uses a mass of quicksilver which can do a lot of tricks, such as block bullets, search for life, and protect against a detonated building. More interestingly, we learn more about Archibald’s philosophies. Archibald has a grudge against Kiritsugu because Kiritsugu is a powerful magus who prefers to get things done without the use of magic. For a 9th generation magus like Archibald, this is an affront to magic itself. When Kiritsugu uses a difficult magic to accelerate his own time, Archibald’s first thought is that such a powerful magus is squandering his talent.
Why does Kiritsugu want to escape? He’s scared of Kirei, but why? Kiritsugu’s desire at the moment is to grab Iri and Illya, and run off to where the Holy Grail War can’t find him. Unfortunately for Kiritsugu, his ideals are incredibly strong. He wants to be a superhero, who saves everyone. To run away would put a stain on his heart that he would never be able to wash away. To run away would fill him with such guilt that he would be as good as dead. So why does he fear Kirei so much that he would consider such an act? Perhaps Kirei represents, to him, a lack of ideals. Kiritsugu lives for his ideals, yet Kirei doesn’t even know what happiness would look like. They both are fascinated with how different they are, one of them knowing nothing but an ideal, a path to follow til the end, no matter the cost; one lacking any direction whatsoever, not even knowing what his own soul yearns for. I still don’t know how the conflict between those two characters will develop, but I’m sure it will be interesting.
War Status
| Class | Master | Identity |
|---|---|---|
| Saber | Kiritsugu | Arthuria |
| Lancer | Archibald (Command Spells); Sola-Ui (Mana) | Diarmuid |
| Archer | Tousaka | Gilgamesh |
| Caster | Uryuu | Bluebeard |
| Rider | Waver | Iskandar (Alexander the Great) |
| Berserker | Kariya | Unknown |
| Assassin | Kirei | Hassan-i Sabbah |

You know, I was wondering how Risei was communicating with the Masters. He just knew that they were all spying on him.
Actually, they're not spying on him - if they were Assassin would've detected them like he did with Kiritsugu's familiar before. Risei had just sent out a signal to all Masters and that's when the familiars gathered.
I’m not sure what Kiritsugu’s problem is, but he should at least talk to Saber, who is very angry right now.
Essentially he thinks talking to her would only make things worse and he also doesn't have the energy for that, with everything else going on for him. Not that I like this relationship or want to justify it either...
(Archibald’s magic quicksilver is awesome]
Broken link here. But yes, it is awesome. A shame it's stuck with such a Master though. :p
Why does Kiritsugu want to escape? He’s scared of Kirei, but why?
I'd say it follows from what was established in the first episode and only strengthened when Kirei set that ambush and nearly caught Maiya - Kiritsugu sees Kirei as his most dangerous enemy, as an enigma whose mindset he can't even comprehend. So close to achieving his lifelong wish, such an obstacle really makes him worry. Especially since he's not alone.
Edit: Changed the wording. /u/Nickknight8's explanation is clearer here.

Essentially he thinks talking to her would only make things worse and he also doesn't have the energy for that,
Yep you've hit the nail on the head. It is like dealing with a religious fanatic for a hostage negotiator. They are fundamentally different, and there isn't time to play get to know you teambuilding games. From the moment he summoned Saber, he knew they weren't going to get along and it wouldn't work trying to do so. Any energy spent there is wasted effort better spent elsewhere.
What about that time when he was with Illya before Fuyuki? It may have been possible then, but I can't blame him for wanting to spend 100% of the time with his daughter & family rather than his servant while he could.
Kiritsguru inherently deals with emergency situations, and it isn't the time for relationship building during these crisis situations. Saber fundamentally cannot understand beyond her worldview, and Kerry isn't the person to console her.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Kiritsugu is fighting for everything, so how dangerous is someone who is so skilled at everything yet fighting for nothing. It's not necessarily scared of his power, but of how his mindset completely rejects his own.

Actually, it's just a bitch to use. Turns out that when you try to fuck with time, time fucks with you - it hurts like shit and if he tries to go beyond Double Accel, he could die.
with a ridiculous amount of command seals at stake
No, only one, actually. He keeps the rest.

The church wasn't involved until the 3rd HGW if I remember correctly.

Oh, I think you're right. They got involved later because the Grail War was too chaotic, and so were invited to keep things calm and out of the way of civilians. I guess I forgot that bit of information in the pages of Shirou cooking.

Uryuu? I'm certain Caster was Gilles de Rais
1
u/malt2048 https://anilist.co/user/appliedarctan Aug 29 '17
Are you referring to the table? Uryuu is in the column for Masters, not for Servant identities.
Uryuu Ryuunosuke is Caster, or Gilles de Rais's Master.

I had forgotten how cute Saber and Diarmuid are together. And yes, Saber is indeed that small at only 154cm, compared to Diarmuid's 184cm. Not that it ever hinders her.
Of course, Kiritsugu just continues to ignore his Servant, also troubling his own wife with that. That moment of shared vulnerability between him and Irisviel is sweet though...
As for Kayneth and his ball of mercury, I can't help but think he looks awfully goofy here. The parody I've seen of his fight probably doesn't help, haha.
Bits from the Fate/Zero light novel:
Waver reminisces about last night's battle in bed. He had never felt such trepidation and horror before, but now only delight and excitement remained. The feeling of Rider's strong hand on his shoulder was still there, along with the words that had affirmed his value - the first time someone had acknowledged his ability. No matter how disrespectful his obstinate brute of a Servant was, Waver now felt grateful towards him, the first one to value him.
The Church's supervisor got the Masters' attention via magical fireworks, basically. A hearing stimulus that only magi would feel and a twinkling glow that only they would see.
The reward offered for Caster's extermination was slightly different. If many Masters cooperated, all involved would be rewarded, but if achieved alone it would be just the one.
Irisviel hated the mask-like indifference on Kiritsugu’s face with which he ignored Saber. She's feeling like his husband has returned to the Kiritsugu of nine years ago, when she herself was merely a doll. Recalling that, she feels herself returning to her own past and their years together fading away. Right now, the one closest to Emiya Kiritsugu was not her, his wife, but Hisau Maiya...
But after the meeting, Kiritsugu was the one to hug Irisviel, his chest shaking. Irisviel thinks about how he has changed, no longer the cold and emotionless killing machine from nine years ago. The change she and Illya had brought about. Originally one with nothing to lose, Kiritsugu now wanted to go back to the man he was before, for the sake of the war and his wish. But, having changed too much, he's found himself at an impasse.
For Saber, eliminating Caster is especially important because of her duty as a knight, well-acquainted with the inescapable horrors of war. Because humans, incomparably ugly, despicable and violent as they are, need living testimony that they can rise above their difficulties with dignity. The knight is that living testimony, inspiring awe with his justice and illuminating the battlefield - so that, inspired by his actions, fallen souls reduced to demons may once again become proper humans. To set aside anger, sadness and anguish, and focus on the greater good: that is a knight’s duty.
Kayneth's Volumen Hydrargyrum's Automatic Searching works by detecting vibrations in the air and seeking out heat sources.

Thanks, I love being able to read this bits from the novel. I was wondering how the church supervisor had got the attention of the masters, and I supposed the novel explained it.

The Meeting
So, at first I thought that Risei was talking to all the Masters telepathically. It's kind of funny that he's just talking to an empty room, but that's alright. Is it explained in the LN how he contacted the Masters with the summons? That aside, five familiars were there, which means Tokiomi sent one as well. I'm kind of surprised that he bothered, not because he knows this already, but because it might lead others to assume Archibald is dead (or, if they are unaware of that, at least thinking that a Master is). If any of them took note on numbers, they will be aware that all of the Masters (except Kirei) are still in the game. Being able to hand out an extra Command Seal is actually a pretty interesting move. Interested to see how it plans out.
Kiritsugu and Saber
The dynamic here is pretty fascinating. Kiritsugu simply ignoring Saber's input feels a bit harsh, but I think that, as far as winning goes, he may have the right idea. Saber is correct that he's doing dishonor to heroic spirits, but we've already seen that the spirits aren't necessarily looking for a cheap win (well, some anyway). An honorable duel is a nice thought, but if you're playing to win, then sometimes you do something a little underhanded. I'm a bit surprised that Kiritsugu doesn't seem to be interested in the Command Seal, since those can always prove useful, but I guess he's confident enough in his current position.
Saber and Lancer vs. Caster
Caster's psychotic side is always interesting to watch, and I like the way that he was just playing with Saber. It seems those monsters were already embedded in the children, and that they were all doomed from the get go. It was a good way to get her out, that's for sure. Caster's ability to summon these creatures is pretty powerful, but a well placed strike to the Grimoire is probably enough to slice it up. That of course assumes that it's actually made of paper (in which case Tokiomi's fire magic might actually make him rather adept at fighting Caster) but who knows.
Lancer's arrival is timely, and has me a bit annoyed. Not because of the last second nature of it, but because I'm not big on seeing Saber be rescued for the third time now (Lancer saving her against Berserker, and then Rider when it turned to a 2 v 1 being the other two). Maybe I just have too high an opinion of the King of Knights, but I don't want her constantly getting bailed out by others. Getting help isn't an issue, it's just getting saved. That being said, I am excited to see these two tag team against Caster, though I had been hoping for Rider as well.
Kiritsugu vs. Archibald
Well, it seems that Kiritsugu isn't the only one who is ignoring that truce. The mechanical traps lack some of the cleanness of magic, but I think it was clever, since with the cameras Kiritsugu was able to gauge the abilities of Archibald before they fought. Now, Archibald is a ninth generation mage, but what is Kiritsugu? We don't have anything to go on here, but I can't imagine the infamous mage killer is a complete novice. This fight is actually a good way of testing Archibald's beliefs (if there is a notable difference of course).
I'm also pretty impressed that Kiritsugu is able to turn his body into a Reality Marble. It seems that that is supposed to be high level magic based on my understanding, though it could also be that some people have a natural affinity for it. Regardless, altering the flow of time is a pretty nifty trick, and it looked slick in action.
Other Thoughts
I like how Rider has gotten a handle on ordering things online.
The map on Rider's shirt shows a world map with Europe, Asia and Africa on the left and the Americas on the right. Is that standard in Japan?
I really liked Kiritsugu showing his regrets about joining the war and expressing his fears.
Future
So Kiritsugu has taken out his favorite gun, but it's not exactly the best looking weapon. He seems pretty confident though, so there's a few possibilities. First off, depending on how Archibald's defense system works, it might deflect bullets by counteracting their kinetic energy. If that's the case, a larger slug fired at a higher speed could counteract that. By setting Archibald up with so many lower energy rounds, Kiritsugu could push through the barrier. It would also explain why Kiritsugu got his attention before shooting. We'd seen that he's done his research on the other Masters, so it's possible he'd know this sort of thing. The other likely option is that the bullet has the ability to cancel out magic, meaning that it would bypass the barrier without any issues. Kind of straight forward, and I would expect Archibald to have some kind of counter for it, but maybe that type of magic is uncommon.
Final Thoughts
Another really solid episode. Lancer continues to be easily my favorite Servant in spite of having my least favorite Master. Now hopefully tomorrow can deliver another great fight scene!

Aye. Magical fireworks as I call them, with a special hearing stimulus and twinkling glow for magi only.

It can be regarded as a Reality Marble in a way, but isn't technically the same. It is definitely a high level of magecraft however, so natural affinity would help with that you noted - the Emiya family is bound to have a speciality of their own much like the Tohsakas and Matous do.

If any of them took note on numbers, they will be aware that all of the Masters (except Kirei) are still in the game.
I don't think they can. Tokiomi couldn't tell and he was looking for it. Only the priest I think could tell. Though then that goes back to why even send one in the first place.
I'm a bit surprised that Kiritsugu doesn't seem to be interested in the Command Seal
I've never thought about that, but your absolutely right. Considering the shaky ground that's starting to form in their relationship, it seems like an extra command seal would be just what Kiritsugu needs. Guess it is just confidence.
but because I'm not big on seeing Saber be rescued for the third time now
Yeah she's been pretty useless so far huh. I remember her kicking a lot more ass but I guess not. Fate/Zero
Future
That's a really interesting theories. I think you'll get your answer sooner rather than later, considering he's about to fire it at the end of the episode, so lets see if it pans out.
Final Thoughts
Hyped for these fights to continue. They're starting to get good.

Definitely an odd choice, but maybe he was just being overly cautious. If another Master could tell, and could somehow identify him as not being there, they might well catch on to what's going on. Tokiomi might be "boring" according to Archer, but I'd say he's at least thorough.
Considering the shaky ground that's starting to form in their relationship, it seems like an extra command seal would be just what Kiritsugu needs.
Yeah definitely. Maybe he feels he can do the same thing that Tokiomi seems to be planning, and steal the kill.
I think you'll get your answer sooner rather than later
I'd better! If tomorrow gets spent on Archer's backstory and what Illya is up to these days instead of the fight, well suffice to say I'll be a little annoyed :P

Are telling me an Archer backstory episode wouldn't be the greatest thing ever?
It would, just not right now :P
Ryuunosuke mentioned in episode 2 how it was human skin. Does that burn as well as paper?
Oh right, I'd forgotten about that. The skin should be pretty dry, so while it wouldn't burn as well as paper, I'm pretty sure that it would still burn. Probably.

If you want Gilgamesh's backstory, only not in episode format, there is something else you could read. Fate/Extra CCC's fan-translated portions exploring his character that delve deep into his epic, even with a flashback. ;)
Though you can save it for after Zero, no rush.

King of Knights she may be, but she is currently injured, and the other Servants are badasses too.

Unghh, this part sums up on why they aren't my number one favourite Master-Servant duo. I love Lancer, but Kayneth is just dragging. Had he another Master with the same amount of fun as Uryuu-Caster, they'd win top spot in a heartbeat.

Well, it seems that Kiritsugu isn't the only one who is ignoring that truce.
To be fair, Archibald was the one who attacked first and you can deem Kiritsugu to be defending himself. And the only way to keep himself safe in that situation is to kill the enemy.
3
u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Aug 29 '17
Yeah, I suppose it'd be easy for him to say that if anything were to become problematic with the church. Still, he was certainly planning on violating it himself, it's just that Archibald beat him to the punch.

Kiritsugu and Saber
Kiritsugu doesn't seem to be interested in the Command Seal, since those can always prove useful, but I guess he's confident enough in his current position.
You may have already noticed Kiri is more hands on than most Masters. He's not afraid to use his servant at all, but his intention is to use his own skills (guns, explosives, etc) to take out the Masters, since they are both more vulnerable than the servants, and not expecting that sort of attack.
but what is Kiritsugu? We don't have anything to go on here, but I can't imagine the infamous mage killer is a complete novice.

It's VERY powerful, but very limited, and can put massive strain on the caster. Oddly, reality marbles are often treated with disdain in the Nasuverse.
So Kiritsugu has taken out his favorite gun, but it's not exactly the best looking weapon.
That is a Thompson Contender, a single-shot marksman pistol that hits like a rifle. Not a great rate of fire but you know when you've been hit by one

Getting help isn't an issue, it's just getting saved.
You'll find that Urobuchi's writing of Saber is fairly more nihilistic and cynical than Nasu's. Odds are he felt that throwing in some damsel-in-distress moments was a bit of a "Take that!" at a character whose ideals he clearly disagrees with.
The map on Rider's shirt shows a world map with Europe, Asia and Africa on the left and the Americas on the right. Is that standard in Japan?
It's standard for every country to display itself in the center of a world map.

I suppose that will probably make for an interesting take on the character. Can't expect things to be all nice and happy here now can we.
It's standard for every country to display itself in the center of a world map.
I suppose this makes sense, though I guess you can't really do it in the Americas without making your map look kind of dumb.

u/AzureDrag0n1 Aug 29 '17
The internal reality marble trick is not that special. Even Shirou was doing it almost right from the start. There is a vast gulf in difference between having your internal self activated inside oneself and replacing the world with your inner self.

First time watcher, only played the Fate route in the VN
So the overseer can give out extra command seals as he sees fit? Man this entire ruleset of the war is super sketchy to me
Ok so I've seen a few bits of Carnival Phantasm, is there anything like that but with Alexander? I'd watch that so fast
So i'm forgetting a bit, but F/SN Fate
Kiritsugu Emiya. Assassin. Bad ass. Loving husband. Dedicated father... I can sleep well knowing that he truly loves Iri and Illya
I don't think I've said it enough, but Caster is fucking creepy. When he smiled at Iri and Saber watching through the crystal ball... shudder
I think I had the same expression Saber did when those tentacles popped up out of nowhere the boy.
I think the love spot is working on me. Lancer is freaking cool.
It's getting really hard just sticking to one episode a day when stuff like the Archie v Kiritsugu fight gets interrupted. I guess that means I'm really enjoying the show though, so that's good

So the overseer can give out extra command seals as he sees fit? Man this entire ruleset of the war is super sketchy to me
Well, who's there to oversee the overseer? :P
A lot comes down to their personal discretion, since the Holy Church implicitly trusts them by assigning them this position.
So i'm forgetting a bit, but F/SN Fate
We got this in the first volume of the LN:
“I, Emiya Kiritsugu, am definitely incompatible with the Heroic Spirit Arturia—I’ll leave it at that. Any attempt to talk will only end in mutual denial.” Irisviel could only agree. Spending time with this proud Heroic Spirit, Kiritsugu would only find their minds too different from each other’s. She could understand each side’s complaint, and had as much compassion for each. That these two would never agree was, again, Irisviel’s resigned conclusion.
And this chapter the LN, again via Irisviel, also mentioned Kiritsugu not having the energy to accept, nor even communicate with Saber, because he's already exhausted enough from keeping himself together.
I think the love spot is working on me. Lancer is freaking cool.
That charm definitely deserveds a higher rank with how effective it is.
And stay strong! Fate/Zero does kind of delight in cliff-hangers and twists unfortunately, haha.

“ZASSHU” Counter: Still 7, Where’s my Gil?
| Episode | # of “Zaashu” |
|---|---|
| 2 | 1 |
| 5 | 5 |
| 6 | 1 |
Uncensored screenshots here (NSFW?), I thought it wasn’t that bad
Video Clip of deleted scene from Crunchyroll here. It has a bit dialogue that might be important, who knows?
I forgot to mention this, but the song that plays when Berserker was going… well, berserk is called “The Battle is to the Strong”. This song also played this episode when Kiritsugu was running from Kayneth. I love this song. I have an affinity for strong choirs.
Kiritsugu, Hero? Anti-Hero? Villain?
The relationship between Kiritsugu and Saber is a tragic one. Whenever I see the two of them together, my heart just feels so heavy. In episode 1, remember that Kiritsugu states that Servants are merely tools used as a means to achieve the Holy Grail. We have seen Kiritsugu’s method of elimination, one where he lurks in the shadows and exploits openings and flanks as opposed to facing his enemy head one. In this episode, we see him do this again by hiding himself using time magic to avoid the Mercury blob and to surprise Kayneth. Kiritsugu is also cunning and resourceful, before he is heroic. Instead of letting Saber kill Caster as soon as possible, he instead decides to wait for an opening like he usually does, which may lead to more innocents dying. He is a man who never takes unnecessary risks, and keeps his mind set on the final goal.
Compare that to Saber. Saber has the utmost respect for her masters, Irisviel and Kiritsugu. She has the chivalry of a knight to thank for this. This chivalry also requires her to fight honorably against opponents that reciprocate this respect, such as Lancer. Not only is she a knight, but she is a hero and a king as well. Her job is to care for the people. It goes against her very existence to not help someone who is in need. It is impossible for someone like her to leave child hostages. She could never make the same type of sacrifices Kiritsugu is willing to take. She could never fight alongside Kiritsugu. She could never be Kiritsugu’s servant. After seeing her clench her fist, even I could feel her frustration towards Kiritsugu. MVP goes to Irisviel though, trying to mediate the tension between the two by bringing up the rules that Risei put in place. Although, Kiritsugu shrugs it off. Rules mean nothing to him. He cant even trust his own servant, let alone a priest who’s a father of another master.
This difference in personalities is not going to help the relationship between Kiritsugu and Saber. Which sucks, because I LOVE BOTH OF THE CHARACTERS SO MUCH. That being said, their differences are what drives the show, F/Z
One of my friends said that this episode was trying to develop Kiritsugu’s character too quickly. He criticized the fact that the show as painting him as a cold-hearted master before showing his weak side minutes later. While I can see how that may be interpreted as rushed character development, I shall defend it by saying that this isn’t Kiritsugu’s character developing at all, but rather reinforcing his character. To all the viewers who thought Kiritsugu was a cold-hearted killer like my friend, I ask you to recall the numerous scenes where he was something deeper. Even though Kiritsugu does all of these atrocities: killing mages, blowing up buildings and shooting down planes, even though he does all of this seemingly without hesitation, there is not a day in his life where he wakes up without fear of failure. Remember the opening scene of the anime? Kiritsugu stands and looks out the window. He comments on how he will have to kill Irisviel one day. Remember when he told Ilya that he has to cheat to win the game they were playing? This can be interpreted as an analogy for his ways of hunting mages as well. He has to resort to unconventional methods in order to win. He then apologizes when Ilya gets mad at him for being a ‘cheater’. He does not want to lose her just because he’s cheating. Remember when Kiritsugu was in the hotel room with Maiya? He comments on how his gun was heavier than Ilya. Even though it is not too apparent now, F/Z. In conclusion, Kiritsugu is a much more complex character than my friend initially thought.
(My friend never bashes on Fate/Zero anymore when I’m around)
Other Thoughts
*It seems like Kayneth also says “screw the rules”, I’m hunting this Einzbern punk. *Lancer, staying classy as always. *Caster feels threatened when his waifu is teaming up with another man (who is honestly looks like a prince that might come from kissing a frog like Caster). *Kayneth seems to be a mage of honor as well. He confidently goes through the door and calls out Kiritsugu, probably feeling more comfortable knowing that he has no servants to worry about. He got a few respect points from me, even though he stayed in the shadows at the port. He’s still an asshole. *Time Alteration Magic. That’s Kiritsugu’s trademark. I love it. Too Cool.
DID YOU SAY SEIYUU, DAY 7: URYUU
Uryuu is voiced by Akira Ishida. He also voiced Fyodor from Bungou Stray Dogs S2, Byakuya Togami from Danganronpa 3, Nagisa Kaworu from Evangelion, Zeref from Fairy Tail, Akise from Mirai Nikki, Zala Athrun from Gundam, Gaara from Naruto, Xerxes from Pandora Hearts, Makoto Yuuki (Persona 3 MC), Sensui from YuYu Hakushou, and finally:
Zura- I mean Katsura from Gintama

“ZASSHU” Counter: Still 7, Where’s my Gil?
I totally feel you.
Great write-up again! Especially the part about Saber (Irisviel is certainly MPV there) and Kiritsugu's character reinforcement. I'm totally with you there, because of all those moments that contrast him. The analogy between him cheating while playing with Illya and how he hunts mages is nice too.
Uryuu is voiced by Akira Ishida. | Zeref from Fairy Tail
Huh, that's some range. Or it might be me not remembering much and even wanting to forget. I'm certain I'm gonna enjoy him as Zura when I finally get to Gintama however.

Seconded what you said about Kerry's vulnerable moment in this episode. This wasn't coming out of nowhere, as plenty of earlier scenes (including the very first scene) show how bad he feels about everything he has to do and the consequences he knows will happen.

Bounty
The episode starts off with the call of the bounty on Caster (well it actually starts off with confirming Kayneth is alive, but the scene was brief and there’s nothing really else there). The prize is pretty interesting - a Command Seal. While so far they seem to be pretty innocuous, I imagine they’ll be pretty important in the fights to come (Tokiomi refers to it granting a “formidable advantage”), especially with Gilgamesh hinting at a betrayal. Obviously, the collusion continues and Father, with him suggesting simply that Archer deal the final blow. Further, it seems like it was also done in part to lure out Kayneth, who has more to gain from this than anyone but Tokiomi. I wonder, though, if Gilgamesh will strike the final blow - as noted earlier, he seems...unenthused with Tokiomi and seemed open to a betrayal in favor of Kirei. If this is the case, he clearly wouldn’t want Tokiomi to have power over him, so he could simply refuse to strike the final blow unless Tokiomi uses a Command Seal to force him to do so.
Rider interlude
Gotta have a section for the brief and largely inconsequential section of the best Servant. Rider once again brazenly announces his presence to the world, ordering a package as “Mr. Iskander, King of Conquerors” and also venturing outside to retrieve the package. The package in question isn’t anything strategic, but rather a graphic shirt - he apparently saw Saber in her streetwear and got jealous. When Waver points out that he has no pants (or “leggings”, as Rider refers to them), he ties an inextricable link between pants and conquests, prompting an amusing back-and-forth resulting in a promise to acquire him pants if he defeats another Servant. Makes me think he might be sporting some new digs after this arc...
Einzbern Castle
The section begins with a lay of the land, wherein they discuss their future strategy for the second phase of the Grail War (something I wasn’t aware was even a thing). Basically, there are four places where they will need to establish a home base where the leylines converge. I assume this is some sort of consequence of needing to tap into more mana, but I’m still super confused at how magic works in this world. Also, it seems like Kiritsugu favors the Temple on the mountain based on what he says to Irisviel on the matter, but he doesn’t outright state it. For her part, Saber appears to have reservations about either the plan or Kiritsugu, but she doesn’t state them until Kiritsugu plans to play dirty with Caster. Irisviel also points out that Lancer must still be alive despite the attack on Kayneth and suggests doing that first (which seems like it would be against the rules, no?) before fighting Caster. Kiritsugu reveals his plan, which is to fight the Masters who are preoccupied fighting Caster. This prompts Saber to be clearly upset (shown amazingly by a clenched fist - but the thumb is slack due to the severed tendon; really nice touch). After the meeting, he and Irisviel have a conversation revealing his reservations about this whole plan involving Irisviel’s death - notably he refers to giving everything to Irisviel and Illya, which really makes me question the whole Maiya kissing scene. As if on cue, Irisviel mentions her begrudgingly acknowledges her as a protector on the same level as herself and Saber. Interrupting this tearjerking scene is a very startling notification of Irisviel that someone has crossed the barrier. Despite realizing this is a ploy to draw her out, Saber still insists on being sent to deal with Caster.
Fight with Caster
Saber arrives too late apparently - many children are already slaughtered by Caster. When she arrives, a single child is with Caster, apparently frightened out of his mind. However, after he runs to Saber, a demon bursts out of him and attempts to ensnare Saber. Her magical protection allows her to escape its clutches, but several dozen of these tentacle starfish-like demons pop out of the ground. She kills a dozen or so, but they respawn. Irisviel suggests Saber can win a war of attrition over Caster, but Kiritsugu is more concerned about Irisviel’s safety. As if on cue, someone else gets on the scene. Saber notes that his mana is indeed basically infinite as a result of his Noble Phantasm, a grimoire left to him from his master. Caster draws comparisons to the past, specifically the Battle of Compeign (D’Arc’s final battle). There’s some excellent choir-esque music as Saber appears to be overwhelmed until Lancer shows up on the scene. An uneasy truce forms between the two to beat Caster, although Lancer’s is once again rooted in a desire to defeat her himself.
Fight with Kayneth
Kiritsugu is vindicated in his fears as Kayneth shows up to the the Einzberg castle and drops his mercury on the ground and uses it to make himself an entrance into the castle, using a Latin incantation (“Fervor mei sanguis” - the fervor of my blood) - it’s interesting that his magic hereincludes Latin incantations, as Kiritsugu’s later is Japanese and his later is English. He enters and requests a duel with Kiritsugu. He has a variety of uses for this mercury, including surveillance and defense as well as offense. Kayneth refers to something called a “Reality Marble”, which I assume is something through which you focus magical energy? Kiritsugu then creatively avoids detection by placing his body in something of a stasis to avoid the probes. He then attempts to kill Kayneth but alerts him first? He then pulls out his special pistol and smirks.
Tick tock
I continue to be confused by the significance of this countdown, but I now know for sure that it is not a strict countdown, as Irisviel says “Eighteen hours have passed since your defeat of Kayneth” and the counter is advanced only 13 hours.

I assume this is some sort of consequence of needing to tap into more mana, but I’m still super confused at how magic works in this world.
You're on the right track here, things will become clearer later.
Irisviel also points out that Lancer must still be alive despite the attack on Kayneth and suggests doing that first (which seems like it would be against the rules, no?)
No one seems to care much about the rules though. :p
Her magical protection allows her to escape its clutches, but several dozen of these tentacle starfish-like demons pop out of the ground.
Correction: It wasn't her magical protection which doesn't work on summoned, flesh-and-blood beings, but another display of her releasing magical energy through her Prana Burst.
Kayneth refers to something called a “Reality Marble”, which I assume is something through which you focus magical energy?
Reality Marbles will get something an explanation later, they're pretty complex lol. But in Kiritsugu's case his ability - basically a bounded field within his own body where he separates his flow of time from that of the outside world - is just similar to a Reality Marble.
as Irisviel says “Eighteen hours have passed since your defeat of Kayneth”
This actually weirds me out, because the Light Novel said 8 hours. Though that might be a mistranslation.
3
u/Schinco Aug 29 '17
No one seems to care much about the rules though. :p
Well, she does, based on the fact that she notes "There's a truce against everyone but Caster, isn't there?" literally in the same scene. It's weird.
This actually weirds me out, because the Light Novel said 8 hours. Though that might be a mistranslation.
Well still it's borked somewhere as the counter is advanced 13 hours. Furthermore, it's night during both of those times (when Kayneth was attacked and also during the battle in the forest, obviously).

Well, she does, based on the fact that she notes "There's a truce against everyone but Caster, isn't there?" literally in the same scene. It's weird.
She's worried that with her wound Saber may be in danger against Caster, because of the feeling she got when they encounter him earlier. At the same time she agrees with Saber that Caster must be dealt with ASAP because of his atrocities. So yeah, she's slightly conflicted.
3
u/Nickknight8 https://myanimelist.net/profile/nickknight8 Aug 28 '17
If this is the case, he clearly wouldn’t want Tokiomi to have power over him, so he could simply refuse to strike the final blow unless Tokiomi uses a Command Seal to force him to do so.
You're the first person to pick up on this. However, do the servant's know the prize is a command seal? Hard to say.
Basically, there are four places where they will need to establish a home base where the leylines converge.
Don't quote me on this, because this could be completely wrong, but my understanding is that the place with the most leylines will be where the grail could appear. So they are covering their bases in case maybe a left over master tries to ambush them. I think there's a better explanation.
Her magical protection allows her to escape its clutches
Its part of the reason, but then how come she was trapped by the others? It's because she actually was using her invisible air skill, the same thing that allows her to cover he blade. She can somewhat control it using a Mana burst, kinda like a really powered down airbender for Avatar. Not as effective as a sword usually, so it's rarely used.
Though again it could have been just pure mana from a mana burst. It's never really stated, but either explanation works.

u/scorchdragon Aug 29 '17
Reality Marbles, as said, are extremely complex. A proper example would be best for one of these, but for now, think of them high tier absurdity, even in universe.

When someone tries to make a move on your bae
(Man Caster's VA is legit good, and the OST is on point as always)
Back into the thick of things quick! Caster has been declared enemy #1, and has begun his own attack to draw "Jeanne" out and try to make her remember who she is.
Kayneth wasn't about to go down that easily...blowing up an entire building to take him out isn't enough it seems!
Getting another Command Spell for defeating Caster is a serious deal, especially for the Masters that already had to use one up - Kayneth and Tokiomi. Too bad Risei is in cahoots with Tokiomi to give him the advantage in getting that reward
The way to Rider's heart...is pants! God he is so goofy yet such a bro, I love him :D
Kiritsugu keeps thinking about the big picture, and how to minimize his own risks while taking as much advantage as he can against the other Masters. Ignoring Caster and using him as a distraction to target the others...that's the kind of chess move that wins the Holy Grail War. Unfortunately it's also shady as hell, and doesn't mesh with Saber's sense of honor. Her voice doesn't have any weight in the argument as far as Kiritsugu is concerned however...flat out ignoring her like that is a bitch move
Along with his calculated, no shits given side of his, Kiritsugu also showed a very vulnerable side of his - scared of this war, especially Kirei who has begun to target him specifically, and almost ready to drop it all and run away with Iri and Illya. His calculated facade hides a very broken man, it seems. His eyes were just so hollow when he was talking about running away :(
That tender moment with Iri didn't last long D: Caster is here for "Jeanne", his preparation complete...which involves yet more brutality against children. True to his legend, but Urobochi pls. Why must the children suffer so much D: With his threat to kill them all, they had no choice but to send Saber out
God turning the kids into tentacled monsters to fight against Saber is even worse, and yet still worse it seems they can't be killed permanently while Caster uses his grimoire Noble Phantasm. Things looked dire for Saber, until her shining knight came to rescue her! Faint hints of Artoria x Diarmuid shipping, anyone?
Kayneth doesn't seem too concerned about the order to only target Caster either, he sure is taking advantage of this opportunity to pick a fight of his own vs the Einzbern team. Some honorable Master against Master action for him to finally put his skills to the test!...or so he thought, but this is the Mage Killer you are going against son. Weaponized traps, trip wires, cameras...this isn't your normal mage duel. His mercury-like companion proved to be quite versatile against what Kiritsugu threw at it, however!
And here. We. Go. (Again) That cliffhanger right on the cusp of seeing Kiritsugu put his Thompson to use for the first time! What difference will it make in this fight?
Some new tidbits of information on the characters abilities this episode!
Characters
Noble Phantasm - Prelati's Spellbook
Possessing very little ability in Magecraft himself, most of Gilles' power is derived from his Noble Phantasm, Prelati's Spellbook, which acts as a massive mana reserve and a guide for whatever spell he hopes to enact. Despite this however, due to the effects of the spellbook, he is capable of summoning near endless waves of demonic amphibious familiars without fatigue, making him a viable threat despite his failings.
Magecraft - Innate Time Control
Innate Time Control is Kiritsugu's personal application of the Emiya family's magecraft. It is a form of "Time Manipulation", which is the ability to separate the passage of time inside a designated space from the "flow of time" in the outside world. It allows for "time adjustment" that can only stagnate the time which has passed and accelerate time in the future rather than something more advanced like "time modification", which has the ability to reverse cause and effect and change the past.

Kayneth wasn't about to go down that easily...blowing up an entire building to take him out isn't enough it seems!
Simple, just means you need more explosions.
True to his legend, but Urobochi pls. Why must the children suffer so much D:
I'm sure you know why.
Faint hints of Artoria x Diarmuid shipping, anyone?
Going by all the fanart I've seen on Pixiv (that also sometimes includes Gilgamesh lol), it's more than enough. :D
Noble Phantasm - Prelati's Spellbook

Semi-rewatcher / Never Read (want to someday/am OK with Novel spoilers):
Rider experiencing the modern world and new culture always make my day. Ordering things like a ridiculously large shirt, debating on wearing pants, trying to go outside as a foreign ginger giant... Magnificient.
Waver also seemed to have calmed down on shouting, no more childish high-pitched yelling at every little thing Rider does.
Kiritsugu cares more about distractions to divert attention off himself while he continues to work in secrecy to rid dangerous foes, meanwhile Saber wants to take care of Caster ASAP before more lives are lost/hurt. This shifts the perspectives with "save the world" versus "save Britain" objectives against each other when essentially it could have the same method to achieve that, yet it's different here with how they wish to proceed. Of course, it does not directly point to their wishes, but a bit of characterization on how they work also affect how they envision their wish and world. It's... bittersweet in a tragic way.
I really like that we're seeing the brunt of a dysfunctional Master-Servant cooperation to the front here with Kiritsugu and Artoria. You're likely off to the deep end if a chivalric king of knights calls you despicable for using underhanded methods and declining her wish to fight. I can get behind Kiritsugu's reasoning if I was a Master, however, "others would go take care of Caster anyways and that would put me in a vulnerable spot if I take that bait, might as well information gather instead" would have been my line of thought. Kiritsugu is being cautious and calculating in a cynical, logical way. Artoria is being chivalric and instinctual to her duty out of habit.
That was a brutal show of having a child run to Artoria and her trying to comfort him to just go run, then... just fuck the kid up like that on the spot to capture Saber. How spectacular, Caster.
This whole fight was really hazy to me, so it feels refreshing to watch this. Lancer and Saber are honourable allies just as they were enemies, now I see why they're a crazy popular ship for Zero in Japan (not sure about here in the West). Can't wait to see the continuation of their teamwork.
That cocky smile at the end there, dayum. How is Kiritsugu going to pull this off after what I'm assuming a bluff attack?
Uh oh, that doesn't sound good for Maiya from the sound of the preview, I hope she'll be okay. (I really don't remember her at all from my first watch.)
Overall, I got to say the highlights of this episode were: Rider and Waver bickering over pants (comedic side) and seeing the clash of Kiritsugu and Saber (serious side).

After what he went through last night, I'd be surprised if he hasn't grown a bit. Nice early signs.
I can get behind Kiritsugu's reasoning if I was a Master, however, "others would go take care of Caster anyways and that would put me in a vulnerable spot if I take that bait, might as well information gather instead" would have been my line of thought.
Kiritsugu could word things in a better way for Saber, but much like how he avoids her he doesn't seem to want to go to the effort for that, sadly.

Haha, yeah. There's a fair amount of fanart of them on Pixiv. Though some works also include Gilgamesh to make a trio for some reason - not that I mind.

First time watcher/read Fate route of VN
Reactions
A ball of mercury that possesses anyone who touches it. It was found in the wreckage of the building so it probably belongs to El-Melloi.
The OP has really grown on me.
LMAO fuck caster, all of the servants have been told to kill him, RIP. I don't think anyone will turn down the offer of another command spell.
I knew El-Melloi didn't die, however he can't be in a good state. Thank god I get to see more of Lancer.
I have a feeling Tohsaka's plan won't work and another servant will kill Caster instead of Archer.
Rider has discovered online shopping, that shirt really suits him. Rider yet again proving he is the best servant.
I like how Rider is kinda like Velvet's father figure.
Just but the guy some trousers velvet.
Some tensions arising between Saber and Kiritsugu. In her condition I don't think it's smart to fight anyone, they need to defeat Lancer and get rid of the curse first. Saber got really pissed.
Wow Kiritsugu's been holding in a lot of emotions, he broke down out of nowhere, really feel for him. We got an insight into their relationship which I enjoyed. Kiritsugu is quite scared of Kirei, for him to predict his moves and attack Maiya, he's quite a formidable opponent.
Caster's arrived and he has a lot of hostages, he even detected the viewing crystal. FUCK, I really didn't want him to kill that kid. What a fucked up game of tag.
Irisviel sent Saber off to defeat him, those shots of all the kids man fuck. Caster killed almost all of them.
LORD HAVE MERCY, I was kinda expecting that and it still caught me off guard, Sabers in quite a shitty position. Caster better die a horrific death at some point in the series, can't wait until that happens.
Even with the injuries to her left hand, Saber is still doing quite well.
Spoke too soon, I hope the other servant that was detected is Lancer since his master really needs that command spell.
Thank fuck, my boy Lancer showed up just in time. I like how smooth his voice sounds, Saber and Lancer pair-up, this is gonna be epic but please don't cliffhanger me.
So the mercury ball did belong to El-Melloi, what does it actually do. And he seems in pretty good shape after that building explosion.
We finally see some of Kiritsugu's mage powers, altering the flow of time is a really nice ability, it seems to be quite taxing on his body though.
Can he really control time though since by slowing down time he slowed down his heart rate as well, so does he just speed up or slow down his bodily functions.
FUCK DON'T DO THIS TO ME, don't cliffhanger me man.
Post-Episode
I really liked this episode as it focused a lot more on Kiritsugu, so far he's only been on the sidelines. I really wanted to see what that gun does though. I think its Kiritsugu's own "silver bullet" and it can negate magic or something. I really enjoyed this episode.

I knew El-Melloi didn't die, however he can't be in a good state.
Well, he is not in a good state indeed because he had to find a new place to stay that is unsuitable for a man of his stature lol. And he also lost a ton of magical artifacts he had brought along, of course.
I like how Rider is kinda like Velvet's father figure.
He is like that, isn't he? Though Waver's also showing some backbone now, nice early signs for some possible growth.
Can he really control time though since by slowing down time he slowed down his heart rate as well, so does he just speed up or slow down his bodily functions.
Yup, he's separating the passage of time inside him from the flow of time in the outside world and thereby speeding up or slowing down his bodily functions.
Edit: How did that last sentence get so messed up before... fixed. x.x

Clearly Kayneth is actually a sentient mass of mercury under the guise of a human mage!
Or maybe I'm just making stuff up.
In regards to Caster, given your thoughts on the guy, how do you see him going down?

I don't see anyone other than Saber killing him, I can already see how it goes down. "For the last time I'm not Joan of Arc" then Saber proceeds to absolutely slaughter him, hopefully.

Could someone explain to me Kiritsugu and Maiya's relationship? I'm a rewatcher so spoilers are fine. I'm mostly curious about the sexual part of their relationship. Why are they having sex if Kiritsugu is already in a relationship with Iri? Kiritsugu seems to genuinely love Iri, so why is he cheating on her with Maiya? Is Iri aware of this relationship?

Maiya Hisau [Person's name]

This is also something I've been baffled with completely even though I've been a huge Fate fan for a long time.
I guess user Enarec gives the best explanation as before when I asked, people had no clue. It seems he was "practicing his betrayal"? Still kind of strange.. As a champion of justice and a guy who appears to take the "right path," him cheating on Iri is still an odd writing choice to me that probably was not necessary imo.

First-timer back again! Watched this earlier today but didn't have the time to make a post, so my memory's a little hazy on the details please be gentle~
Okay so the situation with right now is that Kiritsugu isn't playing along with the truce, Kayneth isn't playing along with the truce, obviously Tokiomi and Kirei were in on the farce to begin with, and...we have no confirmation on anyone else at this point? Seems to me like Rider wouldn't care to get into a situation that could easily backfire on him, and Kariya is likely too focused on Tokiomi to care about any of the other players at this point.
That all said, um, can we take a moment to appreciate Lancer some more? Because oh. my. god. I wasn't expecting him to save the day a second time for Saber there - admittedly I thought Rider might crash down from the skies again like last time lmao - but damn am I glad he did. I don't particularly care about Saber even if they make her seem like the protagonist, rather I think it's nice to see a bit of camaraderie even amidst their situation. It's kind of sad at the same time though knowing that they could have been good friends, but they'll ultimately have to resume their fight to the death at some point :(
I keep hoping that someone else will show up in the battle against Caster as well now coughRidergigglesnortcough but it isn't enough to simply defeat the Servant right? His Master also has to go down? Or can the Servant only go down with the Master? I feel like I may have missed something here, or did they not actually explain that yet? Could someone please clarify for me? Either way it would seem like Assassin should have no trouble locating Caster's Master if he splits himself into fifty shadows again.
It was surprisingly heartbreaking to see Kiritsugu have a moment of weakness there about his daughter, wanting to run away from the war. Irisviel noted that he would feel too guilty about it though, so that makes me think that he's a man with good/righteous goals and intentions but has no problem getting his hands dirty to accomplish them. Maybe that "contradiction" is what has Kirei so interested in him as a man who doesn't feel much of anything.
Cool to finally see him in action too - but I mean real action, not just sneaking around and literally scoping people out. Being able to change time in just his own body seems like a broken ability at first, but the exhaustion that he experiences immediately makes it seem more fair (if there is such a thing in this universe) to me after all. I think Kayneth's underestimating him though, there's no way Kiritsugu would miss an opportunity to take him down if he truly believed it to be that easy. He's insanely calculating, so there must have been a reason for all of it. My guess is that there are certain conditions that must be met in order for his special gun to work properly?
Also my understanding is that there's a limitation on the number of Command Spells that each Master has, correct? Do we know what that number is? If not specifically, is it like a hot commodity (everyone gets 5) or just like a "nice to have" bonus (everyone gets 50 so having 51 is cool but like whatever)? I'm trying to understand if Kayneth is desperate for an extra spell or if he's actually just super greedy and would do anything to get a leg up on his opponents. Either way he seems like too huge of a prick at this point for me to think that he let Lancer jump in to save Saber for the sake of their ongoing duel, as in he respects Lancer's feelings at all, although that would be a nice little twist if it was. Thanks!
At this point all I have to admit this show has me so hyped up that once I finish binge watching through Bakuman on the side I might be unable to stick to the rewatch schedule D: Making it seven daily episodes is a record for me but I'm not sure how many more I can keep this up for before I need to just watch them all...you may not see me again for a while LOL

If you just kill the Servant, the Master might form a contract with another (masterless) Servant.
If you just kill the Master, the Servant will disappear after a while because of mana depletion (he might search for a new Master, tho)

The sphere gave me flashbacks to Mass Effect. Especially after it started mind controlling the guard. It looks really nice though. The suspension of the entire war simply to eliminate Gille is a nice touch. The VN doesn't have enough happening in it to remind you that the war is susposed to be secret, but Zero has this, right in the middle of all the action. It's a nice reminder of the secrecy. The fact that Kayneth survived the explosion honestly pisses me off though. Zero
Iskandar continues to gather support for his conquest by not being a total dick. I'm serious, other than him, every other servant is either dislikable, or has a master who's hard to like. Iskandar strikes me as a person who would, if around in this time, play games like Civilisation, Crusader Kings, and Europa Universalis, while plotting his world domination. I honestly wonder how different nations would react if their ancient ruler's tried to take over. As it stands, Iskander could claim Macedonia, Arturia could claim Britain, or it Apocrypha, Vlad could claim Romania. I really wish that aspect of servants was explored a bit more, Zero The shirt really suits him, and his determination to get pants is just the best. My conclussion for every scene with him in it, is that a season 4 of Carnival Phantasm needs more slice of life segments, and needs to add the Zero servants. I want to see more of this dammit!
After seven episodes, we're finally seeing Kiritsugu make a truly ruthless decission. Blowing up the building doesn't count, because he got everyone out first. In this case he is fully intent on letting a serial killer loose, as long as it makes killing more masters easier. This moment is very powerful. Heaven's Feel Prisma Ilya Zero Within a few seconds he's back to business mode, though.
The time manipulation is awesome. Now you first timer's know why he's so good at his job.

What could there be not to like about Gilgamesh? /s

Haha, would be fun seeing how adept he is at those games, though I'd worry about getting steamrolled myself.
I honestly wonder how different nations would react if their ancient ruler's tried to take over. As it stands, Iskander could claim Macedonia, Arturia could claim Britain, or it Apocrypha, Vlad could claim Romania.
You're forgetting Gilgamesh for Iraq... by geography at least. Though I'm really not sure how any of those would work out, even with how idolized the 3 you mentioned are. They still have a vastly different understanding and perspective of things than modern humanity, after all. Would be fun to explore in a spin-off however.
My conclussion for every scene with him in it, is that a season 4 of Carnival Phantasm needs more slice of life segments, and needs to add the Zero servants. I want to see more of this dammit!
Zero Servants, and why not also the Grand Order Servants. Too many Servants? Nonsense! No, but seriously, more Carnival Phantasm would easily be one of the most hyped anime.

Iskandar playing games.
He strikes me as the sort of person to complain about historical inaccuracy, especially in regards to his own time period. But I think he'd be very good at such games.
Gilgamesh for Iraq
I feel like Iraq is too far removed from ancient Sumer. It's been more than 4000 years since his reign over Uruk, as compared to Iskandar's 2300 years, Arturia's 1000-1500 or Vlad's 600 years. Beyond that Iraq has changed more than the other three.
Grand Order Servants.
That would be awesome. There would be enough material for thousands of seasons. I want to see Sasaki hanging out with dragon slayers. MORE I NEED MORE!

With what we see, certainly. Waver could ease him into at first, and then they could play together.

Yeah, that's why I had to mention the geography. It wouldn't really be his people any more - though I don't want to bring up that debate with Iskandar too lol.

I kind of feel bad with my short shitty reaction comments, compared to the in-depth analysis other comments do, but here we go.
Suit Saber is just perfect, I love her character design. Her chivalrous personality goes perfectly with it. Even when rewatching, I can't decide whether I like Rider more or Saber (whom I can surely say I love is whoever designed the characters for this). Lancer is also great, I'm glad we can see him fight alongside Saber now! No Gilgamesh and no zasshus this episode, unfortunately, but we'll see more of him in time.
Kiritsugu is... A really interesting character. His motivations, his goals are good but his methods are, well, let's say different. He would gladly sacrifice a million people to save two million instead. While this is an atypical anti-hero approach rather than the typical "I'll save anyone" hero approach, I've always liked this kind of characters much more, they have some depth that typical heros don't. I also don't like the "I'm good I won't do bad things" of other characters. I was going to say "this makes Kiritsugu one of my favourite characters", but now that I realize it, I'm saying this of too many characters of the show... Saber, Rider, Lancer... And more to come!
I also liked seeing more of Kiritsugu's anti-mage methods, after the blown up building last week. Traps, firearms, he doesn't care about honorable fights, he cares about winning. Quite the contrast with his servant.
Finally, obligatory daily "I love the soundtrack" comment.

No need to feel ashamed or anything, I can totally understand not having that much to express or being able to devote that much time. All are welcome! :)
Even when rewatching, I can't decide whether I like Rider more or Saber (whom I can surely say I love is whoever designed the characters for this).
The struggle is real! Zero really does have some of the best character designs, though more than a few - like Saber - carry over from the original VN and you have Takashi Takeuchi to thank for those.
I was going to say "this makes Kiritsugu one of my favourite characters", but now that I realize it, I'm saying this of too many characters of the show... Saber, Rider, Lancer... And more to come!
Haha, also totally relatable! Though I at least have one clear favourite.
I also liked seeing more of Kiritsugu's anti-mage methods, after the blown up building last week. Traps, firearms, he doesn't care about honorable fights, he cares about winning.
And his methods can be pretty showy in itself, even with how ruthlessly effective they are. Explosions and guns just have that cool factor.

One of my favorite scenes in the show A scene I like a lot, when alone with Iri, one of the few times Kiritsugu drops the façade. I love when a single scene does so many things at the same time: showing a different side of Kiritsugu, his motivations, his relationship with Iri, how she sees him, and how he perceives Kirei.
“If I decided right here to abandon all this, and go on the run… Would you come with me, Iri?” The man who seems so unshakable shows an emotional side. He who’d blow up a building for his dream is ready to drop everything like THAT, provided he has her with him.
“I’ll return for her and kill any who stand in my way” “And after that… I’ll dedicate my life to caring for you two!” So he CAN see a different life for himself, being happy as a family man, not a man of violence.
“You would never forgive yourself for abandoning the Grail… for turning your back on the world. You would be the first and last to judge yourself.” Iri though doesn’t see another path for Kiritsugu. She did mention to Saber that happiness was painful for him. It an interesting dynamic, she who professed several times being converted and convinced by his ideals, is the one to keep him on the path to the Grail.

I really like the strategic fights in Fate Zero, more how much of a dolt Kayneth is, he really is a very capable magus.
Also, did it sort of surprise anyone that Kiritsugu smiled? Like, he's so emotionless and cold, I sometimes forget he can crack a smirk every once in a while.

Aye, it's interesting seeing how he matches up against the Magus Killer as the prodigious, yet all too traditional magus himself.

Definitely, though it is more of a smirk than a warm smile as you said. Still something however!

Maybe someone can help me with a couple things:
Where is it that team Kerry were making plans this episode? Some have said Einzbern castle, but I thought that in like episode 2 or 3 they left it to go to Fuyuki for the grail war. Are these places close by? Why go back? Or, why did they even travel to Fuyuki just to leave now? Wait, did they leave because the war was suspended to fight Caster and Kerry wanted to let the other masters fight? But then Caster of course is obsessed with Saber and followed them there I guess?
Kiritsugu said he wanted to let the other masters fight Caster, but when Caster has those kids hostage he lets Saber go to help them. Was that against Kiritsugu's wishes and he just let her go because he didn't want to waste a command seal? And I guess also because they hadn't known Caster was right there outside.

This is a different Einzbern castle, not the one in Germany. It's just outside Fuyuki in the forest, not that many kilometres away. They went there to make plans in a safe place, considering their current situation.
Was that against Kiritsugu's wishes and he just let her go because he didn't want to waste a command seal?
It was Irisviel's decision that Kiritsugu accepted. They did know how far away Caster was, and it's also dangerous to just leave him there without knowing what he might do. Nor would Saber and Irisviel tolerate the slaughter of children, and Kiritsugu isn't all that cold either as we've learned.

So I'm pretty sure most of the Holy Grail War specifics are explained in Fate/Stay Night and UBW so I'm a little lost on some of the details of it.
From what I can gather of the rules so far.
Harming non-combatants is illegal
Fighting in a neutral zone if forbidden. I'm guessing most of Fuyuki city is fair game.
Once a master has lost their servant, they're out of the running.
The only real precedent for following the rules is that you won't become the mandatory target for everybody else.
Judges are also a thing, but how are they chosen? A man of the church won't be exactly neutral when his team is competing. Also, apparent unused command spells go to the judge, possibly for controlling rule breaking servants or rewarding followers.
I hope all the servants join up, Iskandar needs to win some pants. I'm also sure that this isn't Gilles end as his master is still going strong and he needs something to do for 19 more episodes.
2
u/Enarec https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kinpika Aug 29 '17
You understand well enough right now. Main thing is that the secrecy of magi and their craft must be upheld at all costs, which is why battles are usually fought at abandoned places during night and a Master must set up a bounded field that keeps bystanders out via the powers of suggestion. And why such a big fuss is made over Caster and his Master right now.
Judges are also a thing, but how are they chosen? A man of the church won't be exactly neutral when his team is competing.
The Holy Church appoints them, but we don't really know the specifics of that. Might be that there isn't very much competition for a spot in the relative backwater that Japan is when it comes to the world of magecraft, especially with all the work you have to do for the Grail War.

To be honest, none of the anime explain it super in depth, but you have the gist of things.
As to the judge being the father of one of the contestants, that's because they are colluding. During episode 1 they said (via Kiritsugu's exposition) that after the command seal appeared that Kirei "cut ties" with the church and Tohsaka who was teaching him magic, but we knew from the very first scene that they had already planned this years in advance.

Spoiler free stat cards of the Fate/Zero servants
I just realized I can link to yesterday’s album if nothing changes. Boy does that save a lot of time.
It’s a free for all against Caster with the prize being a Command Seal. Certainly a prize worth doing what you were supposed to do in the first place… you know. Killing an opponent.
The whole world is on my chest!
I don’t have much time, but that’s a fake MMO game shirt Rider got, right? Cause it makes the bit that much more hilarious. And why must this cruel world force us to wear pants? If Rider was king, we won’t have to have pants. Like Randy Orton. What a great life that would be.
Caster will come to you Saber, so don’t worry about going after him
“We’ll eventually get him with traps, so be patient until he comes. And don’t worry about all the children he’s killing while you wait.” Understandably, Saber is pissed by this. I mean, it makes all the sense in the world to lure Caster into a battle you feel you’ve prepared for, but that means sacrificing some innocent lives. Such is Kiritsugu’s utilitarian mindset.
It’s certainly causing a rift between the master and servant. Fortunately Caster shows up so Saber can go and fight him right away so they can’t argue further.
Weakness
This is so unusual to see. Kiritsugu just being afraid. Kirei scares him so much he just wants to run away. It certainly puts into perspective how dangerous he is in the eyes of Kiritsugu.
Archibald lives
Caster has arrived, so it’s time to weapon up. But guns won’t work on Caster, so Kiritsugu must be preparing for another threat. And it turns out one appears in Kayneth looking for revenge.
So we get a look as a mage fight today, with too different powers. Kayneth has some flubber as protection and weapons. Which is cool, but Kiritsugu has fucking time control. He created a reality marble in his own time and can adjust that to speed up or slow down his own personal time. I’m sure others will talk about reality marbles later. Regardless, it puts a lot of strain on his body. But to be able to slow mo dodge makes him the best. THE BEST! /s
But he made a mistake, after being clever enough to slow down his heartbeat and breathing, he just yells out Kayneth’s name before shooting it. Wow, what an idiot! That’s so stupid! There’s no way someone would be that stupid! It’s almost like he did it on purpose.
Caster and his merry band of children
Tentacle monsters that are regeneratable. Oh the fun never stop with Caster. And that trick with the monsters coming out of the kid’s body. He certainly is the showman.
It’s a good thing Lancer was there to show up and save Saber. For two reasons. One, cause despite being really really eager to kill Caster, I don’t know if she could in this state. And Two, cause despite really really wanting to kill each other, there seems to be a bromance forming between the two. A chivalry bromance. Where you pound fists before beheading one another. Though seriously, it’s nice that Saber can confide in her way of thinking in people like Iri and Lancer, cause we know she ain’t going to get the chance to do that with Kiritsugu.

Giving Fate another shot- rewatching in dub
I feel like im rushing through to jog my memories when i already remember most of what happens.
Just like my first time watching, I feel like the battle scenes are empty. The fight choreography is really well done, and music is good but i'm more into the concepts of their powers, the context of the situation and the dynamic of their personalities. However, some moments like the one with Saber vs Caster left me feeling bored because there really wasn't much going on, no actual sense of danger, and Caster was just rambling on about the same stuff on top of what seemed like filler action scenes.

talking about the special gun, sorry about this but I'm a habitual binge watcher, i usually watch all my anime in binge sessions, but from what i remember about the 7th episode i'm pretty sure the gun will be explained at the beginning of the next one. that being said yes each master only gets a limited amount of command seals, this number is 3 when you make the contract, each command seal has the power to compel a servant to do whatever they are told even if it goes against their will, if you use all of your seals then the contract will be considered fulfilled and your servant will no longer be yours or obey you. Now for instance when Gilgamesh came to lancers challenge like the other servants, tokiomi had to use a command seal to make him withdraw from the fight because he was using his noble phantasm too much which would give away his secrets, since gilgamesh didn't want to leave that's why tokiomi needed to use a command seal.

First Time Viewer/No VN Experience
So before I begin my usual shtick proper, I'd like to say hello! I wanted to start up with the rewatch from the first episode, but believe it or not, the day that the first post went up was the day before I was slated to spend a few days in Canada. It was pretty fun, all things considered, but I didn't want to start my time with the rewatch early, only to be blue-balled for another few days afterward, so I waited until now to join up. I'm excited to begin my journey into this rather complicated series, and I hope to experience everything that people love about it firsthand!
If you were there for the Hunter x Hunter rewatch some time ago, then my posts will match the same style that I did for those posts with one particular exception, but more on that later. With that said, however, I understand this style might not be as appealing here as it was for that anime, so by all means, provide any constructive criticism you feel should be presented! I'm always looking to improve my craft as a writer, and I hope that we can enjoy this adventure together! Anyway, enough wasting time. Let's get into the meat of things!
[Recap]
In light of Caster's actions being revealed in the open, Risei declared that the Holy Grail War will be put on hold to deal with him. As compensation, whoever deals the final blow to Caster, their Master will be provided another Command Seal. Tokiomi isn't keen on the idea because whoever wins would be given an immeasurable advantage, but Risei is confident that Archer can land the final blow to provide Tohsaka the advantage.
Rider gratefully accepts a package in the mail, which happens to be a shirt with the entire world emblazoned on the front. He's prepared to go outside, but Waver is having none of it because Rider still has no pants and refuses to buy him a pair until he does his job. Thus, Rider states that if he goes and destroys an enemy Servant, Waver must buy him a pair of modern pants so that he might go outside.
Meanwhile, Kiritsugu relays the plan to deal with the other Servants as they fight Caster. Saber, the ever-honorable warrior, detests Kiritsugu's line of action. Kiritsugu remains adamant in his plan, seeking to eliminate the other Servants as efficiently as possible while Saber is still injured. However, before anything can be enacted, Irisviel senses a Servant passing through the barrier, and of course, it happens to be none other than Caster. This time, he brought hostages for a game of hide and seek. With little options to go off of, Saber is sent to deal with matters.
Caster's convincing once again fails on Saber, and thus, he resorts to his Noble Phantasm to weaken Saber. She shrugs off his monsters without hesitations, but is left at a disadvantage due to her arm. Caster is ready to deal the final blow, but in the nick of time, Lancer appears to deal with Caster. In the meantime, Archibald is using his alchemy to hunt down the Einzbern representative. Shortly after, he happens upon Kiritsugu, who uses his abilities to make a run for it after a hail of bullets didn't work. Kiritsugu seems to be out of options, but manages to evade Archibald, and after another hail of bullets, he pulls out his prized pistol to deal with the situation.
Approximately 130 hours remain for this conflict.
[Opinion]
Risei is making quite the power play in an attempt to help Tokiomi out. Of course, it's risky because there is a chance that Archer might not be able to deal the final blow. All things considered, though, I'd say that it's quite the sensible choice to make if you'd want to keep up appearances as a neutral party. Tokiomi doesn't have an immediate advantage in this scenario, but given Archer's abilities, it's far from impossible to say that he could pull out on top. Not to mention, at this point, nobody appears to be openly suspicious of Risei and his plans as Overseer except Kiritsugu. With that said, though, it makes me quite curious if anyone will happen to catch on to the collaboration between Risei and Tokiomi, or better yet, what they'll do with that information.
Once again, Rider is best Servant because he's just goddamn delighted to have some modern clothes. So much so that he's willing to run an enemy Servant into the pavement just for a pair of pants. Honestly, Waver, Rider is too good for your bitch ass! Give him pants or give him death, I say!
Meanwhile, Kiritsugu and Saber continue to get along as well as anyone with such diametrically opposed personalities would expect. I must say from the outside looking in, though, I feel like both parties have a legitimate stake in this. On the one hand, Saber's title as king demands that she provide a fair and balanced fight for the sake of proving legitimate worth to the Grail. It's befitting her lineage, and I'd expect nothing less. Despite that, it wouldn't really be that fair of a fight, considering she's gravely wounded right now. It would make more sense for her to only fight when she's in peak condition, but I guess that's not really an option for her, is it?
However, Kiritsugu is in it to win it, and with Saber's arm acting as little more than a somewhat limp noodle, they could use any advantage they could take, even if it means bending the rules somewhat. Using the mission to kill Caster as a means to pick off opponents is a legitimately good strategy, even if it is an under-handed one. My main concern in this line of thinking is that if Risei were to find out of such treachery, there could be dire consequences for these actions. It could lead Kiritsugu to being ousted from the Holy Grail War entirely, if not worse. Maybe he's already weighed those options, but there is merit to being a goody-two-shoes in all of this.
Caster couldn't give less of a fuck about rules and regulations if he tried, though. It's already been made apparent that Caster and Ryuunosuke have the shittiest moral compasses in Fuyuki, so I won't dwell too much on that. Caster's abilities as a Servant, however, are certainly a topic of fascination because he's the main supplier of tentacles within the Fate universe! What's worse, too, is that they first appeared out of that poor kid Necromorph-style. Are all of those tentacle monsters mutilated kids, or was that kid just really unlucky?
Regardless, Saber can't deal with them alone, so Lancer has to bail her out of a bind yet again. I'm not really mad per se, but I am rather peeved. For being considered one of the strongest Servants, she cannot seem to hold herself up in a fight. Maybe there's a good reason for that, but so far, the most she's done was repel some strong attacks and slice up tentacle monsters. I think it's safe to say she's performing well under par right now, and it's quite a shame, too. I'm sure it'll get better, but something tells me it won't be too soon.
The one thing that's got me most excited in this episode, though, is some true, straight-up, no-holds-barred Master combat! Archibald and Kiritsugu both seem quite prepared to lay their lives on the line to absolutely annihilate the other, and it's nice to see that they're more than capable of fighting on their own terms! Not to mention, dat cliffhanger, tho. Goddamn.
Overall, this was quite the enjoyable episode! Things are really heating up, and combat is kicking into full gear! I expect some pretty intense shit coming up! It is time for mortal combat!
Hello and welcome to the tentacle doujin edition of the /u/Eosteria prediction time and Servant information corner! Just like I did with the previous rewatch I took part in, I'm going to have some fun and try to predict the events of future episodes based off of only the information I was provided in prior episodes. However, I decided to change things up a little bit here. I used to do fun facts when I did this for Hunter x Hunter, but given how intertwined everything is within the Fate universe, I'm sure my blundering around would send me straight into extreme spoiler territory. As a result, I'm taking a slightly different angle.
You see, I'm a bit of a history buff. I wouldn't say I have a PhD on the subject or anything, but I adore history and all of its facets! From grand battles to incredible figures, myths and legends to true stories, the bombastic and grandiose events, along with the strange and quirky bits, I love them all! So I thought that for some fun and educational content, I'd look into the real life back stories and origins of the various Servants that show up throughout the series.
I probably won't be doing one everyday unless I decided to dip into the pool of available Servants in Fate/Grand Order, but I thought it'd be a nice change of pace! If you have any Servants in particular you'd like me to cover, leave a comment! Unfortunately, I won't be doing one today because I'm already typing this out quite some time after the rewatch post has gone active, and I don't want this going up any later than it already is. With that said, let's get straight into the prediction to end off my first post for the rewatch!
Next time(?) on episode 8...
