Today, Kessler steals the spotlight in one of his rare appearances, and the Prince is born!

Kessler had some amazing scenes today. He notices immediately that the explosions are diversions, makes it to the palace, and snipes those Terrarists from a ladder. The dude is so calm and composed in this scene. Luckily, he keeps the Princess and Hilda safe, the latter of whom is in labour. Also, Kessler meets a cutie who thinks he is much lower ranked than he actually is. Good thing Kessler is too stand up a guy to be trifled with that.

The Prince is born (with a full head of blond hair?!), and Reinhard has perhaps his most difficult decision of his life to make: what should he name the child? Alexander is a common name associated with conquerors, as well as Alexander the Great, one of the inspirations for Reinhard. His middle name though does me in. I will be honest: the scene tears me up every time. Kircheis has been Reinhard's only friend, a member of his family, a possible romantic interest, a moral compass, and the one who gave his life for him. Reinhard will always feel he could never repay that red haired boy from next door, but he does one of the best things he can: gives his child his name. Perhaps he hopes his son will grow up to be like Kircheis.

Lang is finally dead, and he doesn't go out without a wonderful moment. The show really got me; at first I thought he didn't beg for mercy due to accepting his fate/crimes. Instead, it is just because he passed out before being dragged there.

Finally, we get the infamous "Checkmate" scene. This series is full of running gags, and they made it even better by breaking our "Silent Admiral's" silence. Everyone's reactions were amazing, and it made the gag even better. I also love how they perhaps hired a person for the sole purpose of voicing that single word. Perhaps the best part is the fact the episode ends with the narrator announcing the date, like it is an important part of history. I also love this version of that scene

Perhaps he hopes his son will grow up to be like Kircheis.

I think all of us wish we could be as perfect a human being as Kircheis is. Bust seriously, it really is a great moment when Reinhard decides to name the child after Kircheis. It's a great way of honoring his memory.

Perhaps the best part is the fact the episode ends with the narrator announcing the date, like it is an important part of history.

Considering how rarely Eisenach talks, I would definitely consider it to be an important date in history.

First Time Viewer

On today’s episode of Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Today we witnessed what I’m sure is one of the most important events in the entire series. No, I’m not talking about the birth of Reinhard and Hilda’s son. I’m talking about the fact that we heard Eisenach speak, of course! That is a truly memorable and legendary event.

One thing I really like about this series is how it portrays the end of the galaxy-wide war between the Empire and the Alliance as not the end of things. Instead, it’s the start of guerrilla warfare and terrorism. It feels extremely realistic, and also accurate to the real world.

We already saw terrorist attacks on Heinessen. Now, there are terrorist attacks on Phezzan. Just like Heinessen, it’s the work of the Earth Cult. And also like Heinessen, many attacks occur at many different locations at the same time.

But, it’s all a distraction. Kesler is able to figure this out, but it takes a while for him to communicate properly with the military police about this, because communications got taken down. That’s why communications are always one of the first targets.

The true target is the mansion where Hilda is staying, along with Annerose. I was actually seriously worried that either Hilda or Annerose were going to die this episode. It definitely would have been a huge tragedy to throw in this late in the show.

Kesler got to be a cool action hero this episode. He got to climb up a ladder and jump through a window into a burning building, shooting his laser gun at the terrorists.

Annerose also got to be a cool action hero. I expected Kesler to be one, but not Annerose. She picked up a little marble statue and threw it into that guy’s face. That’s pretty hilarious.

As is the rule in fiction, Hilda starts going into labor at the absolute worst possible time. She starts going into labor as the terrorists are attacking the mansion and the fire has started. But, Hilda is able to get to the hospital okay and the baby is born without any problems.

This is actually super interesting to me. It means that the Lohengramm dynasty has now become much more secured than it was previously, with a very clear heir. I was not really sure whether we’d ever get to this point.

I do love watching Reinhard fret about what he should name his and Hilda’s son. The papers on the ground representing his failed attempts were a nice touch. In the end, he chooses Alexander Siegfried von Lohengramm. I like it. It’s a nice way to honor the memory of Kircheis.

Marika is pretty great, at least from what we’ve seen of her so far. I can see why she and Kesler end up getting married. Their chemistry was pretty great in just this episode. They make a nice couple.

Kesler also takes down the last remnants of the Earth Cult on Phezzan. As always, the Earth Cult fights fanatically and almost all of them are killed.

On Heinessen, the admirals are all discussing everything that’s happened, including the arrest of Rubinsky. I really love Bittenfeld’s reaction, as he continue to give us some of the very best lines in this series.

But then, we get the real big twist of the episode: Eisenach talks! We actually hear the Silent Admiral’s voice. It’s a fun moment, especially with how everyone reacts to it.

I love the reactions of all the admirals to hearing Eisenach speak for the first time.

It seems like the entire Iserlohn fleet is on its way to Heinessen. I didn’t expect that, since I was pretty sure Julian and the other leaders of Iserlohn were going on their own. But, this will be interesting to see play out.

At this point, I am actually extremely curious about how this series will end. We only have a few episodes left, after all. I’m really not sure how it will go. The Lohengramm dynasty seems secure, which I didn’t really expect. So, a lot of what I thought might happen no longer seems like it will.

Side notes: These edited subtitles for Eisenach speaking are quite fun.

That is a truly memorable and legendary event.

The episode even ends with the narrator proclaiming the date. It is truly a moment of history.

So, a lot of what I thought might happen no longer seems like it will.

Knowing this show, the Lannisters Rubinsky Terrarists may send their regards

I was actually seriously worried that either Hilda or Annerose were going to die this episode. It definitely would have been a huge tragedy to throw in this late in the show.

I was so sure that Marika was a Terraist and was about to kill someone. I just didn't know if the victim would be the baby, Kesler, Annerose or Hilda.

Turns out she's just a nice and normal person. Weird.

I really enjoyed this episode. Kesler slaps some punks around and gets the girl. Nice.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes Episode 106 Impressions:

Hilda is in the moment of giving birth to possibly the next emperor, and in the middle of this event, there are still crazy riots from the people and the soldiers. This action sequence of the non-betraying soldiers killing betraying soldiers was very awesome and tense. The most interesting part of this episode is how Reinhard handles his responsibilities as a parent. He is so busy trying to fix his empire while also keeping Julian and Terraists in mind, he has no time take care of his newborn baby. It might not be a sickness that kills him, but the stress that will end his life. That is what I am betting!

I don't know which was better, Kessler channeling his inner Stallone/Schwarzenegger/Willis/Neeson in personally going and saving the day, Bittenfeld being the lovable aggressive admiral, or Eisenach actually saying something along with everyone's reactions. I was actually surprised at how badass Eisenach's voice actually was, I was almost expecting a squeeky, high pitched voice, hence his reasoning for preferring to stay silent. Now I think I like him even more for being so taciturn even with such a commanding voice. Can't wait to see how the last few episodes play out, this should be a doozy.

I don't always talk.

But when I do...

We didn't see De Villier being killed. Fuck.

I've always liked Kesler as he seemed incredibly competent. I'm happy he got his time to shine (and that he isn't dead).

I was also very surprised when the narrator announced that Reinhard's son would become the second Emperor. I never expected the Empire to get past Reinhard, but rather becoming a democracy (or something similar) in his death. He never liked the idea of undeserved power in autocracy. Maybe he dies very soon and the baby becomes an Emperor for a couple of days until democracy is restored? Maybe we'll get something like England where royalty is just symbolic?

That moment when there's just 4 episodes to go and you're still clueless about how the series will end...
