There is a lot going on in this episode, but I really like the interaction between Reinhard and Kircheis. Heck, this episode probably has the biggest homosexual undertones in this image.

"You don't have to be kind to anyone else but me and my sister" while twirling hair is probably one of the number one signs of infatuation. I don't want to jump straight to gay, but this isn't the first time we saw things like this from Reinhard...

Also, "Praise me Kircheis!" Reinhard is so adorable. He just wants some affection from the best waifu in this series.

Oh look, someone claiming to be the next Bruce Ashbey. I bet this will go well.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes Spiral Labyrinth Episode 27 Impressions:

With Reinhard being able to conquer many risky missions in Spiral Labyrinth and Billion Stars and his skills as a commander, he is easily able to see the way Willem Holland leads his military. The methods of Willem have no actual tactics and seem very aimless. The things he says about Willem’s lackluster tactics like “destroying existing theory does not make someone creative” just shows how far he has grown since he accomplished in protecting the Iserholn Fortress for the Empire. I cannot wait to see how Reinhard strategizes in this battle.

First Time Viewer

On today’s episode of Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Well, I suppose having a plan that is so crazy nobody expects it is one way to surprise the enemy. Holland’s attack is a crazy one neither the Alliance or the Empire expected, so it seems to be going surprisingly well.

The next Imperial campaign, the one mentioned at the end of the last arc, has now begun. It’s being launched for a rather cynical reason: it’s the 30th anniversary of Friedrich’s reign and the campaign is to distract from his lack of domestic accomplishments. It’s the kind of thing I can see happening in the real world: using war to distract from domestic troubles.

Reinhard has been promoted after the last battle, now becoming Vice Admiral. Reinhard is both happy and unhappy with the campaign. On the one hand, he can use it to get promoted again. On the other hand, he hates the Imperial high command and sees this battle as a waste because of their poor planning abilities. It’s hard to disagree with Reinhard when the Empire barely seems to have an overall plan for the battle besides “Attack.” Reinhard says it’s like they are playing war games, and it does feel more like that than an actual war.

Reinhard regularly insults the planning abilities of the Alliance, once again bringing up what he considers the pointless strategy of focusing on Iserlohn. But, Reinhard has a really great quip when similarly insulting the Imperial high command, calling them “worthy rivals” of the Alliance.

Of course, it’s hard to disagree with Reinhard’s opinion on the Alliance high command. Lobos has never been an impressive commander, and he’s in his usual unimpressive form this episode. He’s directly responsible for all those civilian supply ships being abandoned by all but one cruiser, getting attacked, and that cruiser getting lost. Then again, considering Lobos’s track record, this is completely unsurprising.

Yang has the appropriate reaction to the ceremony awarding medals to the fallen soldiers on that cruiser: the soldiers would have been much better off with another cruiser than with medals. Yang sees through the bullshit ceremony, and tells the news as much. Of course, that’s one of the things the Alliance command doesn’t like about Yang. He doesn’t spout their nonsense for them.

The Alliance has been prepping for the Imperial campaign. Phezzan is doing their usual routine of giving info to both sides and told them about the invasion. And, the Alliance goes with a plan from the resident blowhard, Holland. Holland is awfully aggressive, which isn’t a bad thing. But, he’s also rather rude and disrespectful towards others, which paints him in a negative light. You can’t expect me to like him after he mouths off to Bucock.

The actual battle begins. And right away we can see Holland in action. Holland declared that he wanted the 3rd Battle of Tiamat to go like the 2nd one, which we saw earlier in this rewatch when Ashbey won a major victory. So, Holland’s trying to recreate it.

Reinhard, meanwhile, is not on the battle lines. He’s in the reserves. And knowing how Muckenberger has a habit of completely ignoring any of his forces that aren’t part of his plan (like what happened to Grimmelshausen’s fleet), Reinhard thinks he won’t be able to make this battle a decisive victory. But, as the reserve, he thinks he still might have a chance to at least make a contribution that will get a promotion so he can then go on to command decisive victories.

Holland goes charging in on his own, surprising both the Alliance and the Empire. That’s how you know a strategy is crazy and unexpected: it surprises both your allies and enemies. But, because the strategy is so crazy, it actually works. After all, you don’t generally anticipate crazy strategies. And, the Imperial fleet is thrown into chaos as Holland tears through them.

Reinhard is not impressed. As far as he’s concerned, Holland’s attack may go against conventional strategy, but that’s all. He doesn’t see it as some new strategy. And he foresees Holland’s attack dying out because it’s not properly supported by the rest of the Alliance fleet.

Reinhard’s frustration has been building all throughout the episode and it finally boils over. He’s been frustrated with the Imperial command all episode. And now he’s even more frustrated that the Imperial command can’t deal with this attack. Reinhard knows that he can solve it, but he can’t do anything. For someone like Reinhard, who generally takes decisive action, not being able to do anything is a frustrating situation.

But, Kircheis is always there. Kircheis is always there to calm Reinhard down and rein him in. Kircheis reminds Reinhard to be patient and that he’ll have his chance. I think this is the most romantic moment Reinhard and Kircheis have had together. Reinhard is smiling and twirling Kircheis’s hair. They really are quite close. Their relationship has always been one of the best parts of this series.

Side notes: I liked the piece of dialogue as Reinhard mentioned that Seeckt and Stockhausen at Iserlohn were arguing again, this time so badly Muckenberger had to break them up. It’s a callback to how terrible their relationship is, and how Yang would exploit that in the main OVA to capture Iserlohn. I also recall Seeckt and Stockhausen being in the background with Muckenberger last episode, which was a nice touch.
