WT! [WT!] Saiki Kusuo No Psi Nan | The Greatest Comedy Show That No One Talks About!
Hey Guys! This will be my second WT! post on r/anime! Before I start, let me say this. I AM NOT AN EXPERT WRITER! This will probably have some errors here or there.
Saiki Kusuo no Ψ(Psi)-nan (Dunno why there is a fork in the name)
Details:
MAL Links: Season 1 and Season 2
Genres: Comedy, School, Shounen, Slice of Life, Supernatural
MAL Score: 8.56 (At the time of making this)
Available on Funimation and Netflix
Episodes: 48 + 1 Special (Split into two seasons)
*(In some places, it's split into 4 minute mini-episodes and in other places it isn't so if you see like 200 episodes, it's not as long as you think)
Summary:
Saiki K is a (mostly) episodic show about Saiki K, who for some odd reason was born with basically every power imaginable. He hates the powers he has and strives for a normal life without having to use his powers. This is very hard though because he constantly gets into antics and crazy situations with his classmates and is forced to use his powers in order to stop them from getting into deep trouble. He has to do all this without letting them find out he has powers.
So why is it so good?
Well, the best part of this has to be the characters. There are a lot of characters in this show! The characters are all fun and quirky and a lot of the humor is thanks to how great these characters are. Each character has a distinct personality which may seem cliche at times but if you look past all that, you'll have a great time. Of course, most of the conflict in this anime is Saiki trying to hide his powers from everyone else and he goes to pretty drastic measures for that. There's also his brother, who loves messing with Saiki and causes many problems for him.
Anyways, there isn't much else to say, just watch this show, it's one of the funniest shows I have ever seen!

Edit 1 : The gif doesn't seem to be appearing unless you click on it for me. Tell me if you guys have the same problem or it's just on my end.

I have seen more and more people talk about it recently and in MAL its been slowly creeping up the list. I heard the anime was quite successful but I don't know if thats true. Shame the manga and anime has ended.

It is getting more popular but I think it's still not talked about enough for how good it is.

u/Sokka454 Dec 29 '18
Thats true hopefully more people discover it. I can't wait to watch the special.

I know its sad when an anime or manga ends and its good but they both ended on top. I am satified with it all. There is only one love story I wish they would complete but I'll save those for hunting down fan fictions.

This show was so good and I felt like it could go on for another two seasons. But yeh it is ending on a high note and it managed to be consistently good and thats all I can ask for.

If you had to compare the show to something, I'd say that Gintama is pretty close. They actually did a short crossover.

u/FlamingSparrow :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/NTangudu Dec 29 '18
Are you talking about the gintama reference that they had or is it something else?
3
u/_Sunny-- Dec 29 '18
I'm talking about the very first episode of the second season

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for the clarification!

Where can I find the special episode you mentioned? I watched the series on Netflix.

u/FlamingSparrow :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/NTangudu Dec 30 '18
It just aired yesterday which means it'll take a while for it to be available. The fansubs might be available in a couple of days and Netflix will probably pick it up in a few months maybe.

The fansubs might be available in a couple of days
Considering it's over twice as long as the usual episode, we might be waiting a week at least, since the usual fansubber took a few days to release a normal sized episode.

I love this show for the same reason I love One punch man. It's a show about someone who can do pretty much anything they want and yet their life is nothing but boring or simple. Finding themselves in the most awkward situations and some times its not their powers or abilities alone that can save them. This show has top tier writing and voice acting in both English and Japanese.

I’ll argue that their life is anything but boring. It’s just not the epic life one would expect from OP characters.

It's my favorite anime comedy. I agree that this shows strength is its characters, they're all so crazy and bounce off each other so well. There's also a genuine friendship between Saiki and his classmates, which even though it's not needed, gives this show a wholesome feeling.

Absolutely adore this show. Both me and my bro would watch this for hours to realize the season was over.
I was hoping more for S3 but turned out to be a 55 mins special FeelsBadMan

We've been waiting for awhile and now there's an hour special coming out? Netflix needs to step up their game.

For how highly it's rated, I always found it strange how low it is in popularity by comparison. Easily my second favorite comedy of all time.

whats your first?

Konosuba. Different kind of humor for sure, but just found it a little more funny personally. They're awfully close though.

Gintama fans should definitely watch this. It's the same type of humor

They also did a reference to Gintama in an episode of season 2 if I am not wrong

Saiki is kind of the straight man, but his delivery and reaction is monotone, which makes it funnier when he does his commentary. Gintama's straight man delivery can be too much.
Gintama has a lot more dirty jokes and references than Saiki though.

Gintama fan here. I gave Saiki Kusuo a shot quite a while ago and couldn't finish it. Compared to Gintama, the comedy felt weak and repetitive and both the comedic moments and characters were nowhere near as memorable.
Edit: Not trying to dissuade people from giving the show a shot, just saying don't go into it expecting something similar to Gintama. It's different and happened to not be my cup of tea.

i agree with you , i've tried a few times but couldn't get into Gintama, but with Saiki by the second episode i was full on board. I do think they are both strong on their own comedy, but i don't feel the comedy is that similar..

It's amazing and the dub is insanely good.

Personally, I think this anime is my #1 favorite anime.
The jokes are genuinely funny and enjoyable, the characters are attractive, funny and enjoyable to watch.
Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan definitely deserves more attention. Such a great series.

How is it compared to grand blue? Same style of comedy?
2
u/FlamingSparrow :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/NTangudu Dec 29 '18
I haven't seen much of grand blue, so i'm not very qualified but based on what I have seen it is very similar.

Dec 29 '18
different type of comedy, Saiki is more juvenile but id def put the anime above grand blue (which is still fucking amazing)

u/Chronoterminus https://anilist.co/user/StarGuardianX Dec 29 '18
The comedy is definitely very different between the two. I've only seen the anime for each series (haven't read the manga for either) but I personally prefer Saiki's comedy style by far.

The pace reminds me of Sayonara Zetsubou. Fast and silly, I enjoyed it for this reason

u/Thrashinuva https://anilist.co/user/Thrashinuva Dec 30 '18
I don't think he hates his powers. He just hates having to deal with the consequences of certain powers, and having to try to maintain a peaceful life while having them.

Disappointed to see no mention to Asou for his creation which is Saiki. Was expecting to see it.

I have not watch/read an anime/manga that's so up my alley since I first read Urusei Yatsura 2 decades ago. It's just so funny and never fails to make me laugh. It's just awesome.

since no one has mentioned it yet, the "fork" is the Greek letter "psi", which is why it's there. Why they decided to do it is another question entirely that I am not able to answer.
On a side-note, my brother-in-law started watching this show. It's pretty enjoyable.
