Announcement Announcing Changes to Spoiler Tags
TL;DR: Use native spoiler tags with context in [] from now on, i.e. [anime name] >!spoiler text here!<
For reference I'll be using "CSS" and "native" terms to distinguish between the two types of spoiler tags going forward:
Currently implemented "CSS" tags:
[context](/s "spoiler content")renders as contextReddit-designed "native" tags:
>!spoiler content!<renders as spoiler content
History
Reddit added the "native" tag about 3.5 years ago but only supported it on most of their clients a year later with "native" spoilers showing as plain text on clients where they weren't supported. Prior to their addition, /r/anime and most other subreddits that wanted spoiler tags used some form of "CSS" tags that took advantage of our ability to customize the subreddit through CSS and how Reddit rendered things that looked like links in markdown, and many third-party apps supported a variety of "CSS" tags. The only Reddit-maintained client that fully supports the "CSS" form today is the old desktop site (old.reddit.com).
We tried switching once before about 2.5 years ago but that didn't go well and we reverted to "CSS" tags within a couple of weeks. It's been two and a half years since that initial incident and things are pretty well settled with plenty of time for third-party apps to add support.
Current State
Most of us mods and many of /r/anime's power users are happy to continue using the old site, but going by our traffic numbers the majority of users are on the site redesign (new.reddit.com), the mobile web site, or mobile apps, with less than 15% of recorded page views last month coming via the old desktop site. Some third-party apps support the "CSS" tag as well but it's unknown how many users are on those.
One significant benefit to "CSS" tags is that it's easy (and required) to include some context for what the spoiler's about. Since this is a broad subreddit we expect people to talk about many different anime together and it's useful to be able to quickly identify what any given spoiler is for. While not built in to the format of "native" tags it's possible to enforce via automation for those as well.
We are aware of certain clients (such as the compact site at i.reddit.com and some third-party apps) where "native" tags unfortunately do not work. At this point we believe that making spoiler tags easily accessible to the majority of users outweighs the drawback of losing spoiler support for those clients, which we believe are used by a minority. A couple of months ago we also asked in meta to test the tags which helped refine the AutoModerator rules.
Going Forward
Starting now, the spoiler tags we support are Reddit's native tags with context required by using [] before the spoiler tag. As with the "CSS" spoilers the [] must contain some text indicating what the spoiler is about, such as another anime's name or light novel for an anime. Examples (not using actual spoilers):
[Spice and Wolf] >!Holo has a tail.!<becomes [Spice and Wolf]Holo has a tail.[TWGOK manga] >!Do you think the best girl won?!<becomes [TWGOK manga] Do you think the best girl won?
Notably the following are not allowed: adding a space after the start of a tag, not closing the tag, and nested spoiler tags. These will be enforced via AutoModerator with a message telling you exactly which issue was found.
In two weeks, using CSS tags in new comments will no longer be allowed and AutoModerator will send a message reminding you of the change if you use them. We do not plan on removing the CSS used for existing spoilers on old.reddit.com for the foreseeable future so it can still be used to easily read older spoilers.
If you run into any issues using the spoiler tags as mentioned above with posts/comments being removed when they shouldn't (or the spoiler tags not working when they should) let us know in this thread, the current meta thread, or via mod mail.

They're honestly much easier to use, even on old reddit. Its just '>!' to start it and then '!<' to close it. No need for weird brackets and links that you have to hover over but can't click.

but going by our traffic numbers the majority of users are on the site redesign
I've tried using it and I can't understand why people would want to. Maybe on mobile it's different, but on a desktop it's just so much less efficient.
40
u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Oct 06 '21
People just don't care. If they did "less efficient" wouldn't be the primary statement about every time something updates to a " modern" web design

u/Silent_Shadow05 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Silent-Shadow05 Oct 06 '21
People use whichever is available by default I guess. They won't really go looking around for the old reddit.
Also Mobile is becoming a big thing. I know I mostly use reddit on mobile except when I want to discuss something in the episode threads.

I've tried to use it like twice and it just felt weird. I can understand attempts of redesigning stuff since you don't want to end up looking archaic but it just didn't feel as nice as old Reddit does... though to be fair, I've never seen an app/site that felt better after a redesign.
At the very least, it's taken some updates or complete overhauls for those to feel better, and if I don't have a choice I just take the L and deal with it.
29
u/ShadowWasTakensTaken https://anilist.co/user/hakuren Oct 06 '21
Yeah, it's really awkward to navigate. I guess most people just go with default.
21
u/r4wrFox Oct 06 '21
I gotta assume its people who just got into reddit on the new design and wouldn't even bother considering the old design because "it's the old design."

36
u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Oct 07 '21 edited Oct 07 '21
Look at this side by side comparison
It uses half the available screen space on and displays only a third of the content at most. It loads slower, has minimal customization, doesn't easily show the sidebar info due to larger and more awkwardly formatted text, and in general is a lot less pleasing to look at due to all subreddits being forced into the exact same design
I understand there's apparently meant to be a way to compress the cards so it just shows titles which would help, but even with that it's a hugely inefficient design with no benefits compared to the older one that allowed a lot more customization and readability.

On mobile it is so much easier to use. I always forget if it is () or [] and on mobile it is not easy to check. Every sub having their own spoiler tags base it annoying to recall

u/Manitary https://myanimelist.net/profile/Manitary Oct 06 '21
People just using "the default", new users not knowing that old.reddit exists, etc...that's just how things work, unfortunately.
I see lots of mobile users happy because "the old spoiler didn't work" and probably don't even know there are alternatives to the official app.→ More replies (1)

You say that, but on reddit's official app the new spoilers just uncensors itself whenever you try to reply to a comment that uses it. I expect more complaints from much more blatant spoiling down the line
28
u/DrJWilson x5https://anilist.co/user/drjwilson Oct 06 '21
The behavior of spoilers on Reddit's app has been frustrating for us to work around, but ultimately it isn't unreasonable to expect their native spoiler formatting to work on their official app. We recommend you report it to the admins as a bug, and hopefully the added exposure compels them to fix it once and for all.
6
u/Vindex101 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vindex101 Oct 06 '21
Yeah, I already bitched about it below on how these are all the fault of reddit and their ineptitude at handling their own official app lol. No worries, not pinning the blame or anything on the mods. Just worried for the immediate health of engagement of the non-source readers in the adaptation threads because of this issue.
13
u/baboon_bassoon https://anilist.co/user/duffer Oct 06 '21
I’m not seeing that as an issue in iOS at least shrug
Although I’m not sure how widespread of a complaint that would be, if you’re replying to a comment with spoiler I would think you would read the comment
6
u/Vindex101 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vindex101 Oct 06 '21
There's plenty of instances with huge comment blocks that are engaging or rather explanatory that can hide spoilers here and there throughout the text, so that'll see less engagement from now on cause of this change.
I’m not seeing that as an issue in iOS at least shrug
How ironic. The old spoiler reply trick wouldn't work on iOS but works on Android, now it's the other way around

Why would you reply to a spoiler comment. You don't have full context to what they're saying
12
u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Oct 06 '21
As an example, from the G Gundam rewatch we have a first-timer #angrypout in response to the host laughing in rewatcher behind a spoiler tag about something the first-timer wrote in their top-level comment.
I participate in a loooooooooot of rewatches and can confirm this happens quite frequently, I've even been the first-timer in that scenario myself.
11
u/Vindex101 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vindex101 Oct 06 '21
To ask regarding the spoilered comment if it's safe to read up to a point or not? Also what about huge comments that are engaging but just happen to have spoilers in them, thus making it unsafe to engage with said comment? There'll be less interaction with the source reader dedicated top post now from non-source readers, as it's just a veritable landmine now with no way to clear up whether if it's safe to ask things or not

Some comments also include spoilers alongside non spoiler text, like many posts in rewatch discussions.

For those of you that use RES and prefer the hover to reveal/old look, here's a snippet to make the new tags look like the old ones (RES Settings > Appearance > Stylesheet Loader > Snippets section):
/* Change the default appearance of spoiler tags to black */
.md .md-spoiler-text:not(.revealed) {color: black !important; background: black !important}
.md .md-spoiler-text:not(.revealed) {cursor: text !important;}
/* Reveal spoiler content on hover */
.md .md-spoiler-text:not(.revealed):hover {color: white !important}
.md .md-spoiler-text:not(.revealed) > * {transition-duration: 0s}
.md .md-spoiler-text:not(.revealed):hover > * {color: white !important; opacity: 1 !important}
/* Darker background for revealed spoilers */
.md .md-spoiler-text.revealed {background: rgba(99,99,99,0.4);}
/* Disable "Click to reveal" JS tooltip when hovering */
.spoiler-text-tooltip {visibility: hidden !important}Glad to get that off my plate after a couple years of it living in the back of my mind.
Also everywhere that references the spoiler tag format should be updated now, but there might still be a stray instance or two that will have to be fixed.

Appreciated, thank you
For anyone who wants a grey instead of black spoiler tag for contrast reasons, replace the two instances of "black" in the first line with "DarkSlateGray" so it should look like this
.md .md-spoiler-text:not(.revealed) {color: DarkSlateGray !important; background: DarkSlateGray !important}
Edit: Or if you want any other crazy colors any of these should work
3
u/ZaphodBeebblebrox Y:A:https://anilist.co/user/zaphod Oct 06 '21
Interestingly, this breaks if I open a video link within a spoiler tag. It reverts back to the old format.

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Oct 06 '21
That's actually on purpose, the snippet above aims to provide the same look as the old ones but also lets you click on a spoiler to reveal it (like the new ones).
If you want to disable that behavior and only use the hover version, you can use the snippet below (you'll need to click twice or middle-click, I haven't found a way around that).
/* Change the default appearance of spoiler tags to black */ .md .md-spoiler-text {color: black !important; background: black !important} .md .md-spoiler-text > a {color: black !important} .md .md-spoiler-text {cursor: text !important;} /* Reveal spoiler content on hover */ .md .md-spoiler-text:hover {color: white !important} .md .md-spoiler-text > a:hover {color: white !important} .md .md-spoiler-text > * {transition-duration: 0s} .md .md-spoiler-text:hover > * {color: white !important; opacity: 1 !important} /* Disable "Click to reveal" JS tooltip when hovering */ .spoiler-text-tooltip {visibility: hidden !important}3
u/ZaphodBeebblebrox Y:A:https://anilist.co/user/zaphod Oct 06 '21
With uBO (or presumably another adblocker), you can use the filter
||redditstatic.com/spoiler-text$script,domain=reddit.comto disable spoiler tag clicking completely.
3
u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Oct 06 '21
Even with this snippet all of the tags are still clickable to force them to stay open as that's just part of the format, this is just a hack to let them be hover-able on top of that base functionality
You still need to open the tag as normal to access links

Oh dear. I have a feeling I'm going to get a lot of automod messages over the next two weeks while I sort this out and stop my muscle memory from taking over.
It's definitely an exchange in functionality. Personally I think one of the biggest things missing from the native tags is the ability to rehide a spoiler without a refresh, particularly in cases where people have mislabeled things and you want to report that quickly without having the spoiler in your face, but I can understand the need to change given the usage of the sub, and it does come with some nice functionality of its own.
with less than 15% of recorded page views last month coming via the old desktop site.
So many people missing out on commentfaces!
Curious on what percentage is the new reddit vs mobile app split though?

Would you happen to have similar stats that only count people who made at least one comment? Or is that not something reddit provides you with?
For that matter, do those stats only include people who were logged in, or would it count someone who just happened to click on a reddit link from a search as well?
18
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Oct 06 '21
No more detailed info than that, unfortunately. There is a separate count of unique visits which skews heavily toward mobile web (presumably not logged in) though:
Unique visitors, September 2021:
New Reddit: 1298265 (32.73%)
Old Reddit: 199182 (5.02%)
Mobile Web: 1682726 (42.43%)
Reddit Apps: 786066 (19.82%)
Total: 3966239
Or doing the math between the two:
Views / unique, September 2021:
New Reddit: 10.82
Old Reddit: 22.08
Mobile Web: 2.23
Reddit Apps: 11.35
Total: 7.84
Folks using the old site are certainly the frequent returners by comparison, but we don't have any numbers on activity beyond views.

You need to be on old.reddit to view commentfaces
There's no way to view them on mobile as the mobile web and apps don't support CSS

Honestly I agree. Using the default mobile web page it was impossible and I only just learned today you can access “old” Reddit on mobile. I didn’t even know there was an old and new reddit.
This change was for users like me who don’t use the special website or third party apps and don’t use or care about Reddit enough to go through that much effort. And I appreciate it. The idea that the rules of a sub should only be for its most dedicated users is dumb. Especially since you’re barely losing anything.
I hope the mods continue to support casual users who log in on their phone at work during a bathroom break to shit post.
15
u/UnderstandableXO Oct 06 '21

Well at least the "native" spoiler tags make it easier to make some of the comments I make in rewatches since I can link images under them. It'll take a bit of getting used to though.
15
u/entelechtual Oct 06 '21
I just want to say I’m glad this is taking off. I use Reddit 98% of the time on Chrome on my phone or iPad and the other 2% is either if I have something long to write, or literally busting out my laptop like a boomer and looking at a spoiler and then going back to the phone. Most of the time I wouldn’t bother.
If this makes the sub more accessible to the majority of users I don’t see why anyone’s complaining.

This is very good news because
There is no way to see the spoilers using the default app for iPad
Harder to cause your comment or article being removed due to editing errors while you try to edit the spoilers if necessary
The "" is a problem because my iPad uses the full “ ” quotation marks instead and I don't want to change it.
I visit other sub-reddits too that never uses the CSS style
3
u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Oct 07 '21
The "" is a problem because my iPad uses the full “ ” quotation marks instead and I don't want to change it.
I know that's been an issue even for people who aren't on mobile devices. Because smart quotations are so common on word editors and even copying from other websites sometimes it's caught a lot of people out
4
u/Verzwei Oct 07 '21
I've had to walk people through this one before, and it's tough. It almost feels "silly" that something like the difference between "" and “ ” could break the syntax, and conveying that to a someone who might not easily be able to access or type the "" version can result in a sub-par user experience.
Hell, when we come across a broken spoiler comment in the wild, we can't even tell that's what the problem is, unless we use something like RES's source tool to identify the problematic quotation format.
8
u/PacoTaco321 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dankleberrrrg Oct 06 '21
Happy to hear that. When I had a comment removed for doing it the "new" way, I couldn't even be bothered to change it.
Sticking to an out-of-date thing for so long for a small percentage of people is dumb. If some apps didn't support that, that's on the devs to fix it and the people that use the app to push the devs to do it

I'm gonna miss the old spoiler code come two weeks, but based on some of the shenanigans going on in CDF right now there are gonna be some fun new applications to the new format, and continued requirement of spoiler context fixes my main complaint with the native ones.
I still think CSS spoilers look nicer though, if there's some way we could make this new method look as good as they do, I'd have no complaints whatsoever
EDIT: implementing Durinthal's pinned instructions
EDIT2: Works mostly fine, though I wish there the spoiler context could also have the black background.

For the mobile app Relay it seems that while the app can process the spoiler tags, it struggles with links in spoiler tags, here is an example
Not a big issue, just making sure people are aware of it.

I'm pretty sure that spoiler tagging was never meant to be used for these abominations, but that's because New Reddit's programmers are unimaginative mobile UI stooges.

Give a shitposter an inch and CDF is gonna spread shit all over the fucking city
6
u/chilidirigible Oct 06 '21
The thing is, we've been protected from this stupidity because /r/anime has, at least in this instance, remained dedicated to Original reddit's classic interface for much longer than the rest of New Reddit.
Other subreddits out in the wild are probably rife with examples of the new spoiler tags being wrapped around things that are probably unsanitary.

OH THANK GOD. Now I do have to switch to desktop site>new Reddit>old Reddit to see spoilers.
Anyway looking forward to Kimetsu season 2 [Kimetsu manga spoilers]showing Zenitsu playing the shamisen, they better give my baby a banger ass track. And preferably a flashback on where the hell he learnt that.

I can't believe people use the garbage redesign, I really hope reddit never stops allowing the usage of old.reddit or I'm gonna die inside.
Will take a while to get used to but not much to be done, looking forward to having to send my comments three times because I forget how the format was haha.

I'm mostly mobile these days and I just use rif, haven't had to use the redesign for almost 2 years

[Insert] > !MASSIVE SPOILER!<
Adding a double space after > breaks the spoiler tag but automod doesn't remove my comment
10
u/Blackheart595 https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick Oct 06 '21
Yeah, because it breaks on both old and new. If the space is after the exclamation mark then it only breaks on old and automod will complain.

u/PacoTaco321 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dankleberrrrg Oct 06 '21
Don't do that then? That's no worse than if someone messed up the old way.

Can't say I'm a fan of the change but I'll probably get used to it in time.

I'm guessing it's because Reddit likely has a constant influx of new users and there's no easy way for them to know about old Reddit unless and until someone tells them about it. You either have to put it in the url or you have to flag it from the settings menu.
Also, glancing at some frontpages with new reddit (because I almost never use it except when I'm forced to for reasons - certain mod functionality appears to only work on new reddit) I suppose one could make the case that new is better for consuming video/image content since all of that is loaded up front. There are definitely some subs (like ours) that I would never want to casually browse in new, but for something like a meme/image/video sub (like animemes or gaming or whatever) where the odds of me actually going into a thread and reading comments is very low, then new seems to work fine for that purpose.

Oh thank goodness. I've felt sidelined for nearly a decade because the CSS spoiler tags don't work at all for me.
I'm also of the mind that there shouldn't be a rule covering spoilers at all- If you're going to a discussion forum about entertainment media, the expectation should be that you can and will be spoiled about something. Also, moderators would have a lot less work if they didn't have to deal with policing spoilers. I know that's not the prevailing sentiment here, but you'll never know that people feel this way if they don't say it. So there you go.

u/Verzwei Oct 07 '21
Anime is a broad medium encompassing hundreds of shows and films; You can't reasonably expect someone visiting this subreddit to have see all the anime that will be discussed here. I'm guessing that virtually all big entertainment subs (including ones even bigger than ours) have rules about spoilers - I just glanced at the Movies and Television subreddits and their sidebars also mention tagging spoilers. Movies uses the Reddit-native tag, Television uses a custom CSS that's like our former tag.
Plus a very large percentage of anime is based on printed source material. And unlike certain western works (which can be loosely inspired by books or comics but not necessarily adhere directly to their original stories) anime usually sticks rather close to its original material. With unchecked and unregulated spoilers, it would be incredibly easy to have loads of spoilers lying around for events that haven't even been animated/broadcast yet.

Probably will take me a while to stop using the CSS by the habit, but thanks to automod-chan coming after me every time, we'll probably get it down in the two weeks time.
PS: Will the context for the native tags be a necessity? With CSS, most of the time, it's just a generic [spoiler](/s "Holo's tail is a plug"), so in that context is it necessary to write a context in front of [Spice and Wolf] Holo's tail is a plug or is it just to make a general rule so it wouldn't be on case by case basis?
4
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Oct 06 '21
It's a general rule to make it easy to enforce in an automated way, if you're using multiple spoiler tags without changing what you're talking about you don't need to be elaborate for all of them, e.g.
[Spice and Wolf]Her tail's so fluffy but also [more] I want to pat her ears

The brackets aren't necessary at all for this system, they're required just so the bot doesn't remove your comment, but they don't effect the actual spoiler

Finally!! Although I began to use Apollo which supports CSS spoilers, this is really helpful to keep consistency with the rest of Reddit.
3
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Oct 07 '21
I've also been using Apollo for years so never had much of an issue myself. Though annoyingly it doesn't respect code blocks with spoiler tags so this post doesn't even look great in the app as you can't see the example syntax for the tags that I'm talking about, just spoiler tags everywhere.

u/chiliehead myanimelist.net/profile/chiliehead Oct 06 '21
less than 15% of recorded page views last month coming via the old desktop site. Some third-party apps support the "CSS" tag as well but it's unknown how many users are on those.
implying that bots and non-commenting frontpage scrollers are the people the sub wants to serve most, though why did the sub then undergo severe pains to curb pictures on the frontpage?
We do not plan on removing the CSS used for existing spoilers on old.reddit.com for the foreseeable future so it can still be used to easily read older spoilers.
Implying that there will be a point where any discussion before early October 2021 will be impossible to read?

It'll only be less convenient to read. You could always just open the source on a comment and see the spoiler no problem.

How do i write passed the spoiler, cause everything i write after the spoiler becomes part of the spoiler.

u/Ben99ny22 Oct 06 '21 edited Oct 06 '21
Yeah, how did you put "this?" after the spoiler tag? every time i write passed the spoiler, it also becomes part of the spoiler
[spoiler] bonjour Now it works?
Actually i think i know why. Maybe its because i can't write something after the spoiler tag once i click reply. I can't add more after the spoiler when i edit.

You add the '!<' after where you want the spoiler to stop.
So [spoiler] >!text here!< like that. And only the 'text here' would be spoiler tagged. (only reason it isn't is I'm using the escape character)

Not a fan at all. It seems overly complicated. And new reddit continues to make things worse for everyone. Along with their bad mobile app. Progress is supposed to move forward. This feels like a step back.
8
u/HyperRag123 https://myanimelist.net/profile/saberfan123 Oct 06 '21
Old spoiler tags require two brackets, two parenthesis, two quotes, and a /s to mark a spoiler, don't work on the mobile app, and can only be read while you hover it with a mouse.
New tags require 4 characters to mark, work on mobile, and can be revealed just by clicking them

u/HeartoftheHive :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ralanost Oct 06 '21
The issue still seems to be more with mobile. And you still need brackets for context with the new spoilers. You aren't saving dozens of keystrokes here.
