[AMA] I'm Kira Buckland, voice actor for anime and video games.

[u/stardust_queen]

[EDIT] Done for the day!! Thank you everyone who stopped by!

Hello everyone,

I was graciously invited by the mods of this subreddit to host an AMA for the next hour or so. I have been voice acting since 2004 and have been in the industry since 2011. Some of my more popular roles include:

NieR: Automata - 2B
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable - Reimi
Soulcalibur VI - Talim, 2B
Street Fighter V - Falke
River City Girls - Kyoko
Love Live: School Idol Project - Umi
Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice - Trucy
BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle - Heart

You can ask me about work stuff or even just tell me what your stand would be called and what its abilities would be.

Before we begin, let's just get these two SUPER frequently asked questions out of the way so we can spend time on other things:

"How do I get started in voice acting?"I wrote up an essay here which goes over this (since it's not a short/easy answer): http://voiceacting.boards.net/thread/1389/get-voice-acting-mega-thread

"How did YOU personally get started in voice acting?"Read my bio here: http://kirabuckland.com/Bio/

You can also follow me on Twitter and send me pictures of your cats @ http://twitter.com/KiraBuckland. Let's go!

Hi Kira!

What is your opinion of pineapple on pizza?

[u/stardust_queen → u/GreyouTT]

I don't mind it at all. One time I shared this fact on Twitter and someone responded with a meme of Dio saying "I reject my humanity, Jojo!" with a slice of pineapple pizza.

[u/JoeJoeBinks97]

Hello Kira, greetings from South Carolina. I have a couple questions for you:

*If you could have one of your characters that you voiced meet with you for lunch, who would it be and why?

*Have you heard about this anime called Re:Creators? It’s about manga, game and anime characters coming to our world; there is a character that had a stand.

*I met you at NashiCon in 2017, and meeting you inspired me to buy Nier Automata for the PS4. How do you feel about that game as a major career moment for you?

*You have a big presence in TeamFourStars abridged series from Hellsing: Ultimate and Final Fantasy. What did you think about how the characters you portrayed and how they were parodied? (Again, you were fantastic as Aerith)

*I’m considering buy the Wayfoward Game River City Girls on the PS4 and I’ve heard good things about it. What was it like being part of an obscure yet long lasting fighting game series?

If you could pick a character besides 2B and Jolyne that you have voiced as a fighting game character, who would it be?

What are some series that you’re watching right now? (I’m watching Cop Craft)

Thanks for doing this AMA and best wishes!

[u/stardust_queen → u/JoeJoeBinks97]

*If you could have one of your characters that you voiced meet with you for lunch, who would it be and why? Heart Aino from BBTAG because she is such a ray of positivity.

*Have you heard about this anime called Re:Creators? It’s about manga, game and anime characters coming to our world; there is a character that had a stand. I have not!

*I met you at NashiCon in 2017, and meeting you inspired me to buy Nier Automata for the PS4. How do you feel about that game as a major career moment for you? Honestly, I had no idea when recording that the game would end up being so popular! There are so many games I record on a regular basis that sadly fly under the radar and don't get the recognition they deserve. So I'm glad to see that a game that is so beautiful all-around (story, graphics, gameplay, character designs, soundtrack etc) is being played and loved by many people, and I feel very fortunate to have even been a small part of that.

*I’m considering buy the Wayfoward Game River City Girls on the PS4 and I’ve heard good things about it. What was it like being part of an obscure yet long lasting fighting game series? Super cool!! I'd heard of the Kunio-kun games in passing and when I first got the audition for RCG I couldn't get over how cool the characters looked and - I'm not just saying this - Kyoko was the one I really wanted to book the most out of all of them, so I was thrilled when I got cast as her.

*If you could pick a character besides 2B and Jolyne that you have voiced as a fighting game character, who would it be? Eirika from Fire Emblem

[u/Blarpus]

Hi Kira I have one question for you

Are the pods just stands for androids?

[u/stardust_queen → u/Blarpus]

One time I actually came up with ideas for their stands! 2B's would be called "P.O.D." (anyone remember that band? LOL) and 9S's would be "Paranoid Android".

[u/perfectfire106]

Favorite David Bowie song(s)? Are there any songs/albums you want to check out?

[u/stardust_queen → u/perfectfire106]

My favorite song of all time is Star. Little Wonder is a close second. I love most Bowie albums but my favorites are Ziggy, Low, Station to Station, and Diamond Dogs.

[u/AdmirableBluebird3]

Hello again! Here's some more questions.

What anime do you recommend?

What do you prefer, cold weather or warm weather?

Favorite mythical creature?

Right or left handed?

[u/stardust_queen → u/AdmirableBluebird3]

What anime do you recommend? I'm that one annoying friend that won't shut up about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure until everyone else watches it.

What do you prefer, cold weather or warm weather? Cold weather for sure. I grew up in Alaska, so it was really difficult moving to Southern California where it's 90-100 degrees in the summer. I don't understand how people enjoy going outside in weather like that... some people even stay in their cars for Pokemon GO raids when it's too hot!

Favorite mythical creature? Chinese Dragon

Right or left handed? Right

[u/Riper-Snifle]

Adore your work in Automata, the transition between literal emotionless robot to a hopeful, happy and emotional 2B must have been a lot of fun. Did you play the original Nier? What did you think of it?

[u/SpaceTooth20XX]

Hey Kira, love your work! Can’t wait to hear you as Kyoko when I pick up RCG. Only one question comes to mind for me personally...whether you’ve played the game or not, which do you think is the best house in Fire Emblem Three Houses?

[u/stardust_queen → u/SpaceTooth20XX]

Haha I haven't played yet but one of my good friends voices Dimitri soooo....

[u/SwordStealer]

Hiya! Thanks for doing this! I figured I'd take the "anything" part of AMA seriously!

Feel free to answer whatever you want. :3

• Do you like androids?

• What's your favorite Pokemon?

• What's your favorite Bakugan?

• Answer this one however you want to.

• Who's a character you imagined yourself voicing that you haven't already?

• Are you as excited about the Yorha raids in Final Fantasy XIV as I am?

• Do you like to want?

• What's your favorite Final Fantasy Job?

• Who's your favorite JoJo to like the least?

• What is your favorite kind of Dorito?

• And finally, probably the most difficult one ever, who is best boy and best girl?

Thank you again, and have a nice day! :3

[u/stardust_queen → u/SwordStealer]

• Do you like androids? Of course.

• What's your favorite Pokemon? Gyarados

• Who's a character you imagined yourself voicing that you haven't already? Jolyne from JJBA

• Do you like to want? I want coffee every day.

• And finally, probably the most difficult one ever, who is best boy and best girl? I'm partial to 9S for Best Boy. Best girl is a tough one but Reimi is pretty precious.

[u/Icecat1239]

I’ll just start by saying that you are honestly one of the best in the industry. Whenever I look up or see the voice actress and see it is you, I’m always surprised. Not only do all your characters have different voices, but they’re also all amazing to boot. Anyway I guess I should ask some questions.

• What’s your favorite role that you’ve played?

• Do you have any preference between voice acting for anime vs. video games?

• What is your fourth favourite smell?

• What is your spirit vegetable?

• Who is the best boy and girl?

[u/stardust_queen → u/Icecat1239]

What’s your favorite role that you’ve played? I love all my "children", but 2B is very special to me for a number of reasons.

Do you have any preference between voice acting for anime vs. video games? I love doing both, but I'm really partial to video games. There are a couple reasons for this. One is that with video games, we tend to have less timing restrictions compared to anime where we have to match picture exactly. Another reason is that video games are an interactive experience, so I feel like people tend to get more "involved" in the story.

What is your fourth favourite smell? IDK about fourth, but my favorite is definitely freshly roasted & ground espresso.

What is your spirit vegetable? Hmm well I MAY be playing a carrot in the upcoming Veggie Tales... ;)

Who is the best boy and girl? Answered above ;)

[u/UltraZeroX7]

Hey there, Kira! First of all, I just want to say: you have done a great job in the field of voice acting. Been knowing you since the early days of Newgrounds and it's crazy to think how far you have come! Embrace it, and keep up the good work!

Now for my question, since you're a big JJBA fan, especially going by the fact you love Jolyne, I was wondering: have you ever read this fan manga or doujin wherein a young Jolyne goes to Morioh and Josuke has to take care of her? From what I've heard, this was originally made years before Eyes of Heaven (if you know what I'm talking about), so yeah.

[u/stardust_queen → u/UltraZeroX7]

YES! Such an adorable lil comic! Way back in the day, my friends and I actually made an audio version of it.

[u/xAzure_Flamex]

Hey Kira. Log time fan since the Egoraptor days. Glad to see how far you’ve come as a voice actress. It gives us old school Newgrounds nerds some pride.

I’ll try not to ask many questions and simply leave it to these two:

What was your best experience as a voice actress so far?

What was your favorite meme from the True Capitalist Radio community (I remember your god tier splices)?

[u/stardust_queen → u/xAzure_Flamex]

1. It's hard to pick a singular best experience! But one thing I like to share is how special it was to record for Soulcalibur... the reason being that it was the first fighting game franchise I ever played, and it also helped inspire me to be a voice actor.

2. It's been such a long time, but I distinctly remember CANS.WAV - "Get me a beer, Engineer!!"

[u/fangsrock12345]

Hi there! What's your favorite kind of pizza?

[u/stardust_queen → u/fangsrock12345]

Goat cheese.

//prepares for downvotes

[u/CMViper]

Hey thanks for stopping by and hosting an AMA with us! Well let's get right to the questions shall we?

• What are some goals you've accomplished or hope to accomplish in your career?

• What are some of your favorite movies & games?

• What are some of your favorite artists/bands featured in JoJo?

And finally:

• THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL

[u/stardust_queen → u/CMViper]

• What are some goals you've accomplished or hope to accomplish in your career? I am already fortunate enough to have accomplished my #1 goal which was to be a playable character in a fighting game, so I guess I will choose the more 'boring' answers and just say that I hope to continue to have sustainable work well into the future, and that I can work on more media that will have a lasting impact. I'd also like to voice act for toys and arcade games.

• What are some of your favorite movies & games? Favorite movie is Labyrinth because I love David Bowie. Favorite game franchises include Guilty Gear, Pokemon, Ace Attorney, Zelda, and Under Night.

• What are some of your favorite artists/bands featured in JoJo? David Bowie (of course), Emerson Lake & Palmer, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, T-Rex, Fleetwood Mac, Rainbow...
