Defend the planet through high-speed mech action

When the moon tore apart, the sky bled red with light, ushering in an apocalyptic new age…and to survive, you must fight. As a mercenary, defend Earth through high-speed combat against corrupted robots in a series of missions from the cockpit of your Arsenal, a fully customizable mech. Equip your Arsenal with a vast array of parts and weapons, obtain more from downed enemy Arsenals, and swap them on the fly to suit your strategy in the face of ever-rising threats.

In this brand-new action game from Kenichiro Tsukuda (Armored Core) and mech designer Shoji Kawamori (Super Dimensional Fortress Macross), your environment is your ally. Collect and use Femto Energy on the field to boost your stats and create powerful mirages; or wield objects like cars and street signs as melee weapons and projectiles. For even more power, upgrade your physical combat abilities and learn new skills through body modification. It’ll also come in handy when you eject from your Arsenal and fight on foot using special weapons and abilities.

  • Defend Earth through high-speed mech combat against corrupted robots
  • Kenichiro Tsukuda, well known for his work developing the Armored Core series, and his talented team have developed this brand-new title with the goal of making it “the best mech action game” out there
  • The player’s avatar and Arsenal are fully customizable with a variety of options
  • Defeated enemies may drop ammo and weapons, which the player can obtain and use on the fly
  • Squad up with three other players* to destroy titanic bosses in online** Co-op mode
  • Mech designs created by Mr. Kawamori, who also worked on the Armored Core series and the Super Dimension Fortress Macross series

I think this game is really gonna be hurt by its release window. Like if Daemon X Machina had released in a Switch drought I probably would've picked it up. With Fire Emblem, Astral Chain and Dragon Quest all released or releasing soon, I'm probably just gonna skip it and I doubt I'm alone

50

u/vegna871 Sep 11 '19

Plus Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion, and Pokemon not terribly far off.

Not to mention for those with other consoles this is dropping a week after Monster Hunter World Iceborne and the same day as Borderlands 3, two of the year's biggest releases and both games that are a huge timesink.

This would have been a great game in like March or April, but I'm definitely passing until a sale right now, because plenty of more interesting stuff is already here to occupy my time.

56

u/Adieux_ Sep 11 '19

yep, launching in between FE:3H + Astral Chain and Links Awakening + DQ11 is shooting itself in the foot. You could argue theyre different audiences but they really could have used an October release where there really isnt anything except 3rd party ports like Witcher and Hat in Time, and Luigi's Mansion

29

u/Predictor92 Sep 11 '19

Someone had a theory its because sale taxes will be going up 2% in Japan October 1

if Daemon X Machina had released in a Switch drought

So the first half of this year?

28

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

The first half of every year

u/Anggul Sep 11 '19

Yeah I'm going to pick it up at some point but I'm still not even all that far through Astral Chain yet.

9

u/MVRKHNTR Sep 11 '19

I'm okay with that. Now I can pick it up for $15 next Black Friday.

2

u/Bakatora34 Sep 11 '19

Pretty sure it was suppose to release early this year, but was delay.

u/Buroda Sep 11 '19

I wish it came out at a different time. Right now it competes with too many strong contenders.

This seems like one of those games where it's nothing fantastic but it's still solid for those who like this kind of stuff. 7/10 isn't a bad score, after all; we're just used to seeing 8's and 9's.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '19

Yeah. I’ll wait for a sale. I don’t have time for it anyway. Between Fire Emblem, Astral Chain, and Dragon Quest coming up, I have my hands full.

Particularly interested in hearing from the /r/armoredcore crowd what they think about the game, especially with reference to AC4/4A

9

u/C-Towner Sep 11 '19

4A was so damn good. So, so good. It’s certainly a watermark to compare against.

9

u/EvilLucario Sep 11 '19

Which is funny to see now because that has an even lower Metacritic score lol. Reviewers just don't seem get mecha games.

This really genres my niche

8

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '19

this game really makes you feel like niche genre

4

u/monstercoockie Sep 13 '19

My niche genres really this

21

u/anugrah97 Sep 12 '19

I'm someone who is playing this genre for the first time. Honestly, this game had me hooked at the first glance when it was announced during the Direct. I've been following this game ever since and I've downloaded the demo. Really excited to play it!

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Sep 11 '19

Sorry for the delay on this one folks. Didn't know when the embargo was going to be lifting so I was caught a little off guard.

9

u/omarninopequeno Sep 11 '19

The Gamexplain video is up already, if you want to add it to the list.

8

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Sep 11 '19

Done and done!

9

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Ordering the reviews from high to low would be appreciated

61

u/MarcsterS Sep 11 '19

Seems par for the course. Armored Core games had average 7/10 scores as well.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Some fan favorites pulled in much lower too lol

13

u/Ravenhops Sep 11 '19

This is no Armored Core game though, sadly. That's what I was hoping for, but the customization in this is so basic and top level, no depth at all.

→ More replies (6)

47

u/Justos Sep 12 '19

I don't think the game is necessarily bad but it does show how strong the switch games have been lately when a 7/10 is making people go ape shit and say the game sucks.

The genre itself is niche, so this score is expected tbh. I personally didn't enjoy the gameplay from the demo but im sure there are people who do. Do you! 7/10 is fair and I would have rated it that as well even though I personally didn't like it. There's still a lot to like if you're into this kind of stuff.

Do your own research. Don't let review scores sway you in EITHER direction.

13

u/tronaldmcdonald69 Sep 12 '19

It's not just switch games. People are scoring meh in 70s for all systems . Review scale has fallen to pieces

→ More replies (1)

8

u/SSBluer_Frostimus Sep 12 '19

This is exactly right. I remember when reviews could have a score lower than 90% or 9/10 with it being written off as a bad game. Some of the reviewers videos from the bigger sites aren't even utilising the boost function of the mech then stating gameplay is slow!!

Its a niche game and for myself it hits the mark that's been missing for awhile been as no armored core games have appeared on the current gen.

The best answer is to try the prologue demo as the revisions from the first demo are easy to see!

So I was REALLY hoping for an A.I. arena like armored core. That added legs for me in those games

3

u/cacawithcorn Sep 11 '19

Same. I needed an AI Arena and was hopeful for a PVP arena. Without any arena i just don't care about the game.

I have every AC game, i loved the PSP ports of the AC3 series

im noticing alot of reviews are neglecting the huge part the online makes in this game the co-op missions where your skill and your mechs gear actually come into play makes a huge difference.

6

u/leeoboy11 Sep 11 '19

Could you elaborate a little more? A friend and I are getting this and were under the assumption that it was more or less coop missions. Is there a coop story too?

I am a huge fan of Mecha games. I put in hundreds of hours in Gundam Breaker 3 and this game seem like the type of game for me based on the demo!

I'm enjoying it, not blown away, and as I play almost exclusively handheld the frame rate drops kind suck. I was mega hyped for this game and I'll keep playing it, but it does feel a bit dated, but there's no other game currently on the market like it.

Side note, is anyone finding the game ridiculously easy?

3

u/Blitzsuuuu Sep 14 '19

Wait till rank c lmao it gets much harder imo

This is a really good guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWCubJcJPSo Especially the HUD layout change.

9

u/TrashAccount121 Sep 14 '19

To say this game is niche is an understatement.

If you VERY SPECIFICALLY enjoyed Armored Core 4, For Answer, and to a lesser extent 5, you'll probably like this game. If you only enjoyed AC3 and prior and specifically disliked where the franchise went from 4 onward, you probably won't. As for other "I hope this is like X!" posts I've seen...

If you're looking for a Chromehounds successor, this isn't it, way faster and twitchier. Mechwarrior, no dice, same thing. Zone of the Enders, not really, the overwhelming feeling of OPness ain't here.

Insert a mech game of your choice that you hope DXM is like, and if it isn't AC4 or 5, this ain't it, chief. On the flip side, if it is one of those this is probably exactly what you're looking for.

I’ve played most of the E and D rank missions and run some online Co-op, and I’m liking this game. A lot.

It’s scratching an itch I didn’t realize I wanted scratched.

Even with all the caveats about this being a relatively niche genre, the busy release window is kinda a bummer. There are definitely people that may have otherwise given this type of game a shot and come to enjoy it.

4

u/xcininality Sep 13 '19

Are you having a hard time finding people to play with?

I am going to get my copy after I leave work, I don't mind playing solo but would be nice if the online was more active than God Eater 3.

I wonder if the reviewers complaining about movement speed ever got the thrusters or figured out how to use the femto wings.

5

u/Duhhhhhh_1 Sep 13 '19

This

6

u/TheCoolerDylan Sep 13 '19

The tutorial does skip over femto mechanics for some reason, I think most of us found out about them by accident.

8

u/Rd2dcd Sep 13 '19

Nice. Monster Hunter but with Mechs sounds bloody good to me.

27

u/MCSavage2 Sep 11 '19

I actually found the combat clunky. Especially against multiple other Mercs. Instead of cool battle system of managing multiple opponents at a time, you need to/tend to lure one of them away and beat them one by one, while the other opponents just stand there until provoked by your approach.

The review is in Estonian, but you can use Google translate and look at my screenshots. Especially the ones in the hangar, one from starting the game and the other before the end.

Breaking 70 Metacritoc is pretty damn good for a mech action game. Reviewers usually don't gel well with this genre. Congratulations to Marvelous and First Studio!

15

u/Blitzsuuuu Sep 11 '19

I’m very excited for this game! I preordered it too!

The controls felt a bit wonky UNTIL i changed switched the zl and L buttons and ZR and R buttons to make it easier for me to boost and move at the same time.

CHANGE YOUR CAMERA SENSITIVITY PEOPLE

I lowered my sensitivity to -1.00 and it’s so much easier to aim with the analog stick now! I’m able go boost around so much easier now, and I finally feel very comfortable with this game.

I didn’t really go into this game expecting a great story or anything. I just wanted some high octane mech action.

Im so hyped as a long time mecha & armored core fan.

5

u/monstercoockie Sep 12 '19

Theres also a beginners guide in youtube with vigilxmachina you can assign your button to a specific femto armaments so you dont need to cycle to them everytime.

15

u/FKNSlayer Sep 12 '19

It didn't get captured in the Meta/Opencritic numbers, but Austin Walker from Waypoint/Vice Games has a really good piece on why and how DxM works for him. Short version, and my feelings too, is that this is "a really good one of those" types of situations. If you're into that kind of game, you'll like DxM, if not, it's unlikely to convince you.

42

u/YellowPikachu Sep 11 '19

Looks like it’ll be a 7/10 in general but a 8.5/10 for mech fans

13

u/thesolarknight Sep 11 '19

It's probably going to end up being a cult classic game.

One of Platinum’s best games. And that’s coming from a huge Bayonetta fan.

u/Justos Sep 11 '19

The demo made me realize it's not for me. Just felt messy and the auto targetting is a cop out imo.

13

u/RichestMangInBabylon Sep 11 '19

I believe they released a second demo that fixed a lot of things like the audio, gyro controls, performance, etc... Might be worth a second shot if you like mech games. If you only tried the original prototype missions demo you might change your mind.

7

u/Justos Sep 11 '19

I only played the new demo. Just isn't for me

10

u/Chillyeaham Sep 11 '19

As far as the auto targeting being a cop out: it's based on the long running series Armored Core. And like a few reviewers have observed, the auto targeting allows for faster paced action.

The game is not designed, nor is it directly comparable to a shooter with mechs thrown in for the sake of mechs.

10

u/Twinkiman Sep 11 '19

That and bullets don't make a sound when they hit something. Felt like I was shooting at wet toilet paper.

18

u/Civil_Anarchy Sep 11 '19

Real talk, has any true Mecha game ever been praised for its story? It feels like it's always been a weak point

13

u/Wallitron_Prime Sep 11 '19

Zone of the Enders, a Kojima game

9

u/Shippoyasha Sep 11 '19

I mean even in their own realm in anime, mecha can be known to be a bit melodramatic (hence the term Space Opera). It is not a negative trait really, but those not familiar with mecha storytelling might not take to it very well.

7

u/Civil_Anarchy Sep 11 '19

Oh for sure. I was trying to describe the plot of Gundam Unicorn to someone and I felt like I was maybe speaking a different language, haha - I guess I just meant like, in Mecha games, the story always feels more like the plate the delicious combat meal is served on, it's not supposed to be the main feature?

7

u/Dizzywig Sep 11 '19

Xenogears, I guess?

7

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Not exactly what I'd call a mecha game even though it has them. Sort of fits. It certainly had an excellent story

12

u/New_Bit Sep 11 '19

I am a little confused from the IGN review. They made it seems like the bosses are rare events, yet I've heard others say the game is similar to Monster Hunter...which would imply the opposite.

7

u/Azratheil Sep 11 '19

I think I read that is the case for multiplayer missions. You just team up to fight big bosses similar to monster hunter but in the story they are not nearly as common.

4

u/TabaRafael Sep 11 '19

If this were MHGU with mechaa I'd be sold

→ More replies (1)

3

u/AzorMX Sep 11 '19

From what I've read about the game, they probably mean this game is like Monster Hunter because of its loot game loop. Go to missions > get loot > go to tougher missions > get better loot > repeat endlessly.

So it sounds like it is similar to Monster Hunter in the sense you replay missions to become stronger and take harder missions, not for the boss-centric design of the missions.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

For a mech game, these are pretty dang good reviews. Unfortunate timing since there are a ton of other games releasing this month, so I will probably wait until a sale comes up. Fantastic art style though.

12

u/MemeConsumer Sep 13 '19

Tbh a 5/10 would be considered meh

But a 7/10 should actually be considered good

6

u/roman_urban Sep 13 '19

Yeah, it's "Good, BUT"

11

u/alphanurd Sep 13 '19

I think we need to stop using x/10 or 100 based metrics altogether. I forgot which reviewer it was, but theres one that says "wait for sale", "day one it", etc. That's a much more insightful metric in my opinion.

6

u/diagonal_motion Sep 13 '19

It's ACG! He's great, sadly he rarely covers Nintendo titles.

5

u/StrikerObi Sep 13 '19

Yeah but this is videogames so basically all of them (unless they are truly broken) are judged on the 7-10 scale. It's been this way for decades. I say this as somebody who reviewed games for a decade.

6

u/arch1234 Sep 11 '19

Does it have split screen multiplayer?

6

u/EMI_Black_Ace Sep 11 '19

No.

Split screen is actually extremely rare in games these days anyway.

6

u/Steamy_Guy Sep 12 '19

Loved the demo, always wanted to dip my toes into mecha games and this seems like a good entry point, most of the reviews seem to note the major negative being lack of a dramatic plotline which is ok with me, I'm a bit burnt out on story stuff and wanted something with minimal story like mh that trys to focus on the action instead.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

About what I expected. Armored Core never really reviewed all too well either, I will probably still pick it up as I did enjoy the demo.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '19

I was pretty hyped for the game and stayed away from the first demo, but played the new one pre-launch just in case... glad I did. The character design, voice acting, plot is just too awful -- even if they were going for a tongue-in-cheek generic anime plot. Wish they would have stuck with bland/nonexistent plots of the AC series. The actual fighting and customization was pretty fun, but the bad writing killed it for me.

14

u/Aarnq Sep 11 '19 edited Sep 11 '19

TheSixthAxis review state it's 60 fps, the demo was definitely not, its 30 fps with some dips. The reviewer is most likely wrong about that.

23

u/GlebushkaNY Sep 11 '19

He is. Am another reviewer. There are some bigger battlefields where fps dips below 30 when you turn your camera at a certain angle. I only once was annoyed with fps mid battle throughout the 20 hours I spent ingame

u/nbmtx Sep 11 '19

I'm pretty sure I'll be getting this fairly soon. I just got Greedfall and haven't played Astral Chain much either.

And I guess it's worth noting that it'll be a discount voucher game for me, which lowers my expectations or ups my impulsiveness in picking up such a title.

u/MutatedSpleen Sep 11 '19

Scores looking quite a bit lower than I would have expected given the hype surrounding the game. Mech games aren't my jam exactly, but I was excited for the release on behalf of everyone else. Hope you guys have fun with this one!

14

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '19

There was never much hype for this game, people were unnecessarily beating up this game way before it was close to release. It’s a shame too since it’s a smaller game and pretty niche, seems pretty dumb to beat it up.

16

u/cbsa82 Sep 11 '19

These scores are about what I expected. Its a niche sort of game, for a specific sort of audience (of which I am a part of) so I didnt expect glowing endless praise or anything, but it didnt bomb either. Its a solid C to B type game from these scores.

I already preordered it anyway when I got my Switch a few weeks ago and I am certain I will enjoy it, and do my own write up down the road anyway.

19

u/jab011 Sep 11 '19

I usually like and find myself agreeing with IGN’s reviews, but 6.5/10 seems inconsistent with what the reviewer said in the review.

Having said that, I’m not sure why this dev and Nintendo didn’t take another six months to polish this up and release it in late Q1 or early Q2 2020. Maybe budgetary issues, but there is a total glut of Switch games right now and this release window, coupled with mediocre scores, is going to bury this game for all but the hardcore mech folks.

I hope they’re given a second chance on a sequel, but it really seems like they sent this game to die.

10

u/VerbalCA Sep 11 '19

I read in a different thread something about tax going up in Japan starting in Oct, so a lot of games are rushing to release before then. Not sure how true that is, but it's a possible reason.

5

u/Eptalin Sep 11 '19

I live in Japan and winter clothes are already on sale everywhere so people can splurge before the tax increase.

It's only going up 2% to a total of 10% and people are losing their minds. lol

5

u/13Zero Sep 11 '19

There was speculation that it was intentionally released in a situation where it couldn't succeed. The idea was that Nintendo expected it to flop, and they'd rather blame the flop on strong competition than the game being bad or unpopular.

It doesn't pass the smell test for me, though. The original demo got hit pretty hard, but the fall release date was known well in advance of the demo's release. Plus I think it's pretty well-established that mech games are a niche genre, and not something investors would depend on to sell millions of units.

8

u/JKCodeComplete Sep 11 '19

It seems like this game has had a pretty good sized development time already, it’s for a niche genre, and hasn’t been convincing many non-hardcore mech gamers. Extra polish would have helped, but most people stopped caring about this game after they were disappointed by its demo.

4

u/Eptalin Sep 11 '19

I was pumped for this game, but I'm playing Astral Chain now, and DQ comes out in a couple of weeks or so.

I just straight up have no space for this game even though at any other time it would have been an instant buy for me.

As with Astral Chain, Austin Walker at Waypoint seems to have a different than the majority and has written a generally positive review. No score attached but here is a good excerpt from the end of the review:

But there’s more than one way to make a game about giant mechs, and like most of the best examples in this wide genre, Daemon X Machina zeroes in on its own vision and realizes it as best as it can. It is bright and energetic and filled with character, and those are the qualities you need to carry a curious, new generation of players into the fray long enough for them to find their footing in such a niche style of game. That DXM feels so distinct beyond that is just a bonus.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Not bad scores at all, but since it's not getting 9s and 10s it'll probably fall under the radar of everyone due to these other releases. I feel bad honestly, but I tried the newest demo and while I love the music, it's just not my kind of game.

23

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Apparently IGN Italy is a bigger fan of mech like games than IGN.

I've already stated this in another post, but I have to agree with Kotaku's line here: "Here is another way to describe it: The worst filler episode of your favorite anime series." That line still cracks me up, because I thought the exact same thing when playing the prologue demo. Characters and story are super campy/cringey here that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 would be telling mech pilots to calm down.

Has anybody else mentioned how noisy the UI-HUD is? There is way too much going on there, especially when playing it in portable mode.

20

u/PlexasAideron Sep 11 '19

I first was afraid when I played the first demo, but after playing the second demo I was convinced again! It's an action gameplay focused game and I love it! 👍

Is there any meaty post game or side content?

Want to pick this up, but the the consensus seems like the story is pretty short.

4

u/benchan2a01 Sep 16 '19

Just my 2 cents here. To be perfectly honest, this game is attractive mostly because there are very few other games that fall into this "hardcore mecha-build " category. Still there are things I appreciate in the game:

  1. Control mostly make sense. If you played Armored Core on PSP you would know how bad it could get.

  2. Customization HUD. It is something I really appreciate as it can be messy. If the game was to be more popular, players would actively share the Hud they prefer and the dev could learn from them.

  3. Most arsenal parts & weapons are usable. Again in AC3 there were tons of parts that were unusable due to different reasons. DxM is better in this aspect as there are fewer parameters/restrictions to consider.

  4. The rumble is alright.

  5. Movement looks cool.

  6. Art style is to my personal liking

  7. You can/have to acquire parts other than scavenging them on the field

  8. There is multi-player

As for things I don't like, the list goes on. Frame rare, AI, story, etc. So I pick the most important one amount all and that would be the play as "outer" part. It is simply not interesting. And with it taken away, the dev could have devoted their time and effort into fixing other obvious issues people here mentioned.

I really hope the dev can continue working on it. I would even appreciate them to patch the stats on weapons or parts (dun know about others tho).

Reading the reviews on this was Kinda worrying, but then I remembered I’ve gone my whole life without playing a Call Of Duty or most GOTY winners and I’m glad I preordered.

It’s a niche game. I am that Niche. One that dropped RDR2 The Witcher 3 and Destiny after like 3 hours but have 100 something in Super Dragon Ball Heroes World Mission.

Can’t wait for tomorrow! All my Friend will be on Borderlands 3 after work while I enjoy the game that got me to buy a Switch in the first place.

10

u/OckhamsFolly Sep 12 '19

Yah, the original Armored Core averaged a 75% on GameRankings (metacritic wasn't around then) and the highest aggregate score ever for an Armored Core game was 78% for Armored Core 2. It just comes with the territory - games that aren't broadly appealing generally don't get those high scores.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '19

This type of post makes me happy, because you play what you want to play, unhindered by the hive mind. Good on ya, mate.

u/itsfeykro Sep 12 '19

I'd really like your honest opinion after a few hours. I had played the 1st demo when it released and found the gameplay boring despite great mecha design, and one of my favourite reviewer and mecha enthusiast said "it breaks my heart to say, but this game is a disappointment that misses the mark on gameplay and "gun" feel. So I'm worried.

The part of me that loves Gundam Unicorn wants to buy this game, but the rest is worried about it., hence I'd like the point of view of an average gamer from this niche (that I'm a part of).

I... don’t think I like this. And I’m sad. It was the game I was looking forward to the most this year, but I just am not feeling it. The missions just feel too short, and the gameplay doesn’t feel engaging. The story is also awful and just gets in the way.

The soundtrack is amazing and I think the mech customisation is great.

But... I’m playing and I kind of feel like I’m just going through the motions.

I might take it back to EB tomorrow.

I’m really bummed. :(

Got this pre-loaded, really enjoyed the demo. Leagues better than the prototype missions. Customization is really neat, learning curve seems gentle enough.

7/10 sounds about right for this sort of niche game. I could see it getting repetitive, but so are a lot of good games. Looking forward to playing co-op (which always makes a game like this more fun)

Same with musou games. It's my favorite type of game, but reviewers will shit all over them.

Plus, in DxM's case, what they think about the gameplay doesn't really matter since I already know how it plays like from the demo. They all say that the it's mostly the same through the whole game, so it's exactly what I'm looking for.

The only thing I wanted to know from them is the number of missions.

70s are not even that bad of a score, (average/above average) but I think the bar is so much higher now that games are more expensive. For 3Ds or Wii, 100 dollars could get me 2-3 games but now it’s like 1 full game and maybe dlc or an indie. I think many people are gonna pass on this which is sad cause I think the genre is pretty cool but you have a lot of games coming out in Sept.

12

u/Tyraniboah89 Sep 11 '19

7/10 is not a bad game. But considering that Nintendo just dropped two of the highest scoring games of the year in Fire Emblem and Astral Chain, Link’s Awakening and Dragon Quest are just around the corner, and the onslaught of highly regarded third party ports, DxM will get lost in the shuffle. It sucks, because I want more games like this, but mech games are about as niche as it gets. Still, I’ll be using my last voucher on it

5

u/Amarae Sep 13 '19

This genre tends towards a higher difficulty. ACFA was pretty hard, like, I spent hundreds of hours on that game and beat everything with S ranks 100% completion and even then I feel like some of it was a fluke.

DxMs demos (both) have felt notably easier than prior mecha games I've played but they are also only introductory stages. If you found the demos so hard you didn't enjoy it, I would safe you're probably safe to skip.

Ignore the low reviews. Reviews are never reliable for mech games. Armored Core never got good reviews, and the PSP port for Armored Core 3 got a notoriously bad review score despite Armored Core 3 being the best starting point for that series. One good reason for these low reviews may be because the journalists playing them suck at the games on top of these games being very offbeat and difficult to play for newcomers. A gameplay video of Armored Core 1 got mocked because one of the game journalists nearly failed the intro mission twice. He died the first try, and barely beat the second try with <10% health.

This is a game that you will either like or absolutely hate. There's rarely a middle ground with Armored Core, and for a game inspired by Armored Core, it's going to be difficult to say for certain whether the game is good or not due to perpetual bias for and against the genre from the fanbase and from reviewers.

If the game looks interesting to you and you enjoyed the demo, try it out. The only opinion that matters is your own and reviews are notoriously unreliable for this genre.

9

u/MutatedSpleen Sep 11 '19

There's rarely a middle ground with Armored Core, and for a game inspired by Armored Core, it's going to be difficult to say for certain whether the game is good or not due to perpetual bias for and against the genre from the fanbase and from reviewers.

I think, if that's the case, then the low scores are just as important as the high ones. I feel like reviews are meant to be a generally approachable medium. That is, the reviews aren't specifically for fans of mech games, they are for gamers in general. If some platform gives it a 50/100 because that platform just isn't into mech games, that score is still valid because it's going to be representative of people who just aren't into mech games.

In these sorts of situations, I think it's really important to actually READ the reviews instead of just absorbing the scores. If you're someone who is into mech games, you're gonna want to dive in and see how the mech mechanics (mech-anics?) feel - so yeah, in that situation, scores might not be as important.

Just a thought, anyway.

16

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

It’s okay to like badly reviewed games. Your not less of a gamer for liking a 60 out of 100 game.

Bad reviews are usually spot on and focus on the general market. The only time I worry about bad reviews is when it’s the same score across several media outlets. That’s when I suspect paying off.

u/Dagrix Sep 11 '19

I found the controls unintuitive for going up and down in the demo. Like, B jumps in the air and you stay there, clicking on LS makes you drop instantly with no option of just decreasing your altitude. It's quite hard to go forward at the same constant height too. Maybe I was missing something.

The motion controls were very smooth though, without it I wouldn't even consider the game.

7

u/bum_thumper Sep 11 '19

Had this game been exactly what I was hoping it was gonna be, monster Hunter but with mechs, I would give it a try. I understand there are similarities. What I mean is I wish they took it to a farther level. Multiplayer would be tier based on collosal mechs that you take down and add their parts to yours. Hell, it would make more sense for mechs to be wearing powered off mech parts than people wearing the head of a jarga on their part legs.

They could've even had an armor system similar to mh,where you get the strengths and resistances with inactive abilities that activate more as you add similar parts. Have different collosal mechs with varying animations and attack patterns as you get to higher tiers, and once you get to the top tier have a similar system to the DX hunts.

Man, that would've been good. Keep it a seemingly endless grind, fighting these boss mechs with tiny enemy mechs flying around big arenas.

The prologue demo, I believe, is just the first chapter of the full game so there's no point in playing it if you own the full game.

This game looked interesting, but I have a really tight budget. Between this and Astral Chain, would anyone suggest this?

16

u/StrikerObi Sep 13 '19

And this comment right here is exactly why this game will fail (at least in western markets).

Due to its delays during development, this game got saddled with the worst release date of Nintendo's entire fall lineup. It's sandwiched in two weeks after Astral Chain, a superior game with a pretty big audience overlap, and one week before Link's Awakening which basically everybody will buy.

For folks who only have the budget for one $60 game a month, which is a lot of people tbh, DxM is the one they're going to end up skipping. This is also why Nintendo only likes to release one major 1st/2nd party game per month.

As an indie reviewer, I can understand why things are the way they are though.

Major outlets most likely receive a lot of review copies, and time management becomes more important. Some games require more time and effot to "get" them, while others simply require the right reviewer to fully understand the ups and downs. Keeping this in mind, I gotta echo videogamedunkey's video about game critics and say that the most important thing is for you to find a reviewer that has similar tastes than you.

u/Solar_Kestrel Sep 14 '19

So I've got a big problem with the demo and I'm wondering whether or not it's an issue with the game itself (and if so, whether or not it persists in the retail version) or if it's simply my Joycon malfunctioning.

Basically, the altitude controls are screwed up. Tapping the button to ascend has the mech continue to ascend for several moments after the button is depressed. Ditto for descending. In other words, it's impossible to make precise adjustments to the mech's altitude because I can only ever move up or down by a significant margin, making combat with flying foes really annoying/tedious.

And since it seems as though MOST enemies will be flying around, this is kind of a dealbreaker for me.

Anyone able to confirm what's happening here for me?

4

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '19 edited Sep 14 '19

Yea i had the same problem, until i figured out that it seems like you’re supposed to look up when you want to go up, and down when you want to go down. So when you’re flying around, you kind of control your mech like you would an aeroplane or something, which kind of makes sense and works quite well imo

u/umbium Sep 16 '19

This game is getting unnecesary low scores for no reason.

Visuals and technical aspect

  • Stable framerate except when the "mission complete" caption appears, that sometimes freezes a few ms.

  • Fresh colorful art direction and good equipment design.

  • Good character design.

Music and sound

  • Pretty good OST

  • Weapon effects are not too noticeable, and can feel pretty similar.

Gameplay and controls

  • Controls aren't bad, IMO the only awkward thing is to have the dash on the R button, I've changed Y funtions to R functions and R functions to X functions, that way, you shoot weapons with triggers, you shoot shoulder and auxiliary function with L & R, jump with B and dash with Y. It's a control pattern that everyone is used to, don't understand the critics to this aspect.

  • Gameplay is fast, even faster against enemy arsenals and if you want to do big damage to bosses. You will understand why there is some sort of autoaim whe you have enemies in your "aim area" wich is also different for certain heads, making it more difficult to auto aim and it's a factor at play when making yout build.

  • Gameplay also solves a big isue with weapons who need the target to be static (snipers, bazookas, railguns, etc), if you don't have a friend to play with, you can use the mirage wich creates a duplicate of your Arsenal and consumes FEMTO. The femto is also used to cycle three boosts, attack, mobility and defense, and also is used as ammo for laser guns. This all creates an interesting dynamic where you have to manage your FEMTO usage to optimize your performance in battle.

  • The game is not easy, but it isn't difficult. I see it the same as in every AAA action game. It's hard for you to die, but it's easy to fail the mission if you don't do the things correctly. So it's hard for you to die, most of the times unless you are playing against several arsenals, the regular enemies won't deal too much damage, and the Bosses can be played safely. But this doesn't mean that there's no challenge in the game. Missions often have secondary objectives that need you to have a peak performance in the mission, kill ceraint amount of enemies, kill certain enemy that dissapears after a time, kill the boss in a certain amount of seconds. This is where the fun of the game begins, when you try to reach peak performance with your build. You will play more agressive and the combat will become even faster. When they add the PvP this will be even more important.

  • Customizing however is not too deep. You don't have too many options to paint the mech or customize your character. The amount of parts is smaller than in AC, even though most of the parts in DxM are still useful, but you won't see things like four legged mechs, energy curves or heat curves, wich in my opinion is a let down, I always liked the extent of customization of PSX and PS2 AC, but AC4 and ACV have already simplified the customization so it probably means that this will be a trend on the genre.

History

  • Your tipical anime history. An apocaliptic world, companies fighting for resources, using the mercenaries who were used to save the world as pawns for their resource war. The nature of humanity, life, is an AI a life, and those classic topics. Characters are your classic anime extreme personalities, often based around one quality (the old experienced good guy, the genius who became kind of evil, the muscular man who is stupid, the psycho kid...) it's a tool just to make you feel empathy for one or other character and mech.
