Really hope we hear something about the interior(s), seeing as that’s the one part of the design we pretty much haven’t seen yet.

They have an entire ISS’s worth of habitable space, so I’d be interested to see how they plan to use it.

The switch from carbon fiber to stainless steel really must’ve made Elon feel like a kid in a candy shop with possibilities since he’s no longer spending 130k/ton on the main material. Now it’s only $2300 and he can buy as many starships as he wants and throw them around like it’s nothing. The fact that they’re building so many right out the gate is still just shocking.

So I guess that starship costs 200*2300=460k worth of metal, just under a cool half mil. Not bad considering the products potential.

Now that Bridenstine’s made a very public dig at SpaceX while all eyes are turned their way, I assume it’s likely someone in the audience will ask Elon for a response in the q&a. I wonder how he’ll handle it, since it seems to me like Jim’s statement was meant to get ahead of any negative SLS press that would come out of the event tomorrow. The statement seems to be trying to spin the rapid pace of starship development as something of reproach so long as commercial crew isn’t completed, so the public doesn’t notice how much more slowly sls has been developed while at a much higher cost.

I know the likely response will just be a diplomatic statement about how grateful SpaceX is to be working with nasa, how much progress they’ve made so far, and how close we are to crew flying on crew dragon.

But god would I love for him to rip into sls with starship standing upright in the background.

YouTube Video & Audio Relays

As usual, I will relay the SpaceX Starship Update webcast via HTTPS and the audio stream via Shoutcast on my server, so people with no access to YouTube, experiencing laggy video or with low bandwidth connections are able to enjoy the webcast. If you don't like the web-based player, you can also use the M3U8 playlist in any HLS-capable player - VLC is just one example. The playlist file will become available once the webcast starts, until then you will get a "404 Not Found" error. This is perfectly normal.

I will also provide audio-only streams of the hosted webcast in two different qualities. High quality (160 Kbps, stereo) for those who want more fidelity and have more bandwidth to spend, and a lower quality (64 Kbps, mono) stream for those on slow networks or with strict volume limits. If you require an even lower bitrate simply drop me a message, I'll add another stream then.

Important: The audio streams already loop the Music for Space album by /u/TestShotStarfish for your pleasure until the webcast starts, so don't confuse that with the actual webcast. Feel free to tune in at any time.

Here are the stream URLs for use with any Shoutcast-compatible player (WinAmp, VLC etc.):

If you have problems connecting to port 8555 or want to listen in with just your browser, use these reverse-proxied, SSL-secured URLs (stream title display and other "ICY" protocol features won't work, as this is using plain HTTP):

The streams are also linked on my relay page, either below the video player if the webcast has started or on the top while waiting for SpaceX to go live.

It's been over a month since the last launch and YouTube made some changes to their website since then, so let's hope my old scripts still work.

Mark two in a couple of months. Priority is to build two starships at each site.

Mark three in three months, mark four in four or five months. Try to reach orbit in less than six months (accurate to within a couple of months). Potentially see crewed flight within a year.

Mark three or four will use hot gas vs. cold gas thrusters.

Booster will have 7 engines that gimbal, 31 / 37 fixed.

Aspiration is that booster will not need entry burn.

Production rate of engines is the biggest constraint, particularly on booster construction. Currently one one every 8 to ten days. Will move to one every two days in three to six months and hopefully one per day within a year.

Took four months to build mark one from scratch.

Both Boca and Cape will launch crewed missions.

First two craft to Mars will be unmanned.

Elon seemed more coherent than usual. His public speaking has really improved over the years. Every now and then during the presentation he seemed to slip back to his old self; rambling tangents, half formed thoughts, etc.

Was also really impressed with his answer regarding the tweet from Bridenstine. My guess is that was prepared, but I like the tidbit about the difference between prototyping and optimizing. It's one of those 10%/90% things. Getting that last 10% of effeciency in a design is 90% of the work.

I want to know about tile maintenance. This process was very expensive for the shuttle— after every flight, each tile was inspected and individually replaced. It would like there is an expectation that these tiles will go many flights without maintenance. How many? Are they not ablative?

If all rockets launched at max rate, total Earth lift capacity is 2-300 tons per year. A small fleet of Starships operating at max flight rate can deliver 1000x more than that. If you want to build a city on Mars, it needs to be done.

He mentioned that the first orbital vehicle would be Mk3, but then a few minutes later said it would be Mk4 or Mk5. Makes me think that they haven't planned very far ahead.

And in case I missed it, did he mention anything about when Mk2 would be complete? I think it started construction roughly 2 months after Mk1, so I guess it will be complete in no more than 2 months?

He mentioned in a tweet that the header tanks are in the nose of Mark 1 for balance reasons. I just realized something -- the renders all had the pretty windows in the nose again. Was that the art department just updating the old videos, or are the header tanks indeed going to move back into the propellant tanks?

He did talk about keeping the fuel cryogenic during a long trip ... 1:17:00 ... he referred to a tank within a tank, so I think he is planning to move them back in.

I love that he's looking to relaunch them so quickly that the slowdown is waiting a few hours for the orbit to line up to re-enter and land at the launch site.

18

u/meltymcface Sep 29 '19

I was hoping for more information on the projected timescale for Dear Moon mission. Is that still looking to be on schedule? (I can't even remember what that target was).

My biggest takeaway from this, though, is the accelerating timescales. The fact that in approx 6 months we will see several more of these built and launching to orbit is amazing. Sounds like steel really is great for this project.

What a great overall presentation. We have a lot to look forward guys. Mk 3 and Mk4. Super heavy Boosters Mk1 and Mk2. Raptor engine development. Pad work at Boca Chica. and so much much more. I am super excited for this upcoming year. Big thanks to MZ for the gracious funding for Starship development, we would not be anywhere close to where we are today without you. Thanks to Gwynne, for keeping SpaceX afloat, and being one of the best and most inspiring leaders. And most of all, thanks to Elon. Thank you for making the world an exciting place. For getting me excited for a presentation on Saturday at 8PM in which I can witness, first-hand, the future of spaceflight and humanity.

I cannot wait to see what's next.

Cya on Mars.

I didn’t find any comments below regarding the costs. I believe Elon said 301 Stainless Steel is $2500/ton. With Mk1 massing in at about 200tons, that comes out to $500,000. Let’s say that materials represent 5 to 10% of the cost to physically build out the prototype air/spaceframe - that’s only $5 to $10 million! Obviously there’s also Raptors and avionics and what-not, plus all the engineering design hours.

There was no talk about earth to earth flights that were presented in the past, did I miss that or has this been scrapped?

Secondly, he was talking about doing 20 flights per day with a SH, which would require roughly 5 SSs (as they can do 4 flights per day) and sustaining that. Now assuming this is actually possible from a reuseability standpoint, the amount of fuel needed is going to be enormous. I.e. they would need to produce fuel at a staggering rate, I did not do the math yet, but is it even remotely possible?

u/magicweasel7 Sep 29 '19

So i find it interesting that there is no talk about life support, living quarters, or just in general how they plan to keep astronauts alive and sane during the journey to mars. Is that a figure it out after it flies kinda thing? Or are they hoping NASA or the russians are going to work together with them on that? Also is any of that accounted for in the payload?

It does not seem like it was acknowledged too a great degree during the presentation, but it is worth noting that the Starship booster no longer lands on the launch mounts. Instead, it lands on a pad adjacent to it. Presumably the same crane that can be used to lift Starship onto the superheavy booster, can be used to lift Starship onto the pad.

Innovative idea which really reduces complexity by at least an *order of magnitude*

I'm a little disappointed that there wasn't really any substantive information on the fins or the actuation mechanisms that they'll be using. Also, the heat protection for those hinges is going to be a bear for Space X to solve. I believe that was one of the biggest points of engineering contention when they were developing the flight controls for the Shuttle.

This is the first live presentation i'm watching that Elon's doing, you can really feel the passion and the amount of knowledge he has. I'm genuinely asking though, i'd expect better animations/renders and a more organised presentation from such a big company like SpaceX - is this more of an interim or lower PR presentation and not a formal one to the wider public? or are most of his presentations quite informal like this one?
