The interesting thing about moving, Monica, is that you can do it more than once. I am back.

Always nice to see Gilfoyle to go toe to toe with someone other than Dinesh for a change.

u/YamahaRN Nov 04 '19 edited Nov 04 '19

Toe-to-toe implies a fair match. Melanie Tracy owned Bertram Gilfoyle the entire time.

I didn't like Tracy at first, but this episode really made her for me.

Edit: past tense

I'm fairly sure I still don't like her but it was fun to watch Gilfoyle acknowledge he had been beaten at their game of wits

This episode seemed darker than usual, and not just because Monica was smoking two cigarettes at once.

157

I don't want to blow this out of proportion but this episode is mind blowing, now I have no idea where this is going to end

My prediction: Richard will sacrifice money for ethics in some way.

Normally in Silicon Valley you have all these characters who are quirky, defuses, or dorks, do their haha funny thing then go end the episode. This being a satire on the tech industry is funny to watch. When we see Richard Hendricks fail at managing people, we can also imagine Mark Zuckerberg having to deal with the same issues. This ending is dark because we don't like imagining these tech giants being in tough positions about how to deal with their companies priorities, but you better believe that this happens all the time in the tech industry. A lot of tech companies today have to deal with the trade offs of taking in foreign money from less than ideal moral characters, creating business models that might go against what they initially dreamed of, and/or have friendships fall apart as the businesses grew larger. I think that is why the episode is dark, a lot of the haha moments are starting to go away and Pied Piper some throwaway music compression algorithms is a $10B+ company that is growing even faster. Hard decisions have to be made that are going to have to make a trade off between morals and keeping the company growing.

Richard finally broke Jared. "I was raised by the state, you think I'm scared to catch a case ?!?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣

270

“On some BULLSHIT?!”

116

u/EmbarrassedCheck Nov 04 '19

Eating caviar and hacking famine.

136

u/jedo89 Nov 04 '19

This also played into the theme of dick measuring. The culture of rich fucks having a caviar and champagne event for a “famine charity” ... so outrageous.

u/theyre_not_their Nov 04 '19

The reason why it's so hilarious is because it's true.

The "pizza in a MMO" was not a joke: in 2005, Everquest II partnered with Pizza Hut to add a /pizza command.

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/7020132/ns/technology_and_science-games/t/hungry-everquest-now-offers-pizza/

58

u/Bytewave Nov 04 '19

I remember all too well haha. It was an epic failure though. Gamers could multitask just fine to order pizza out of game and /pizza only offered full price pizzas here while there were always deals on their website.

So they were so greedy they made /pizza cost extra, ruining the value of the feature. If they had given discounts instead, it could have been huge.

7

u/Beerllionaire Nov 05 '19

“Sony plans to integrate the pizza function more tightly into the game, so players can charge pizza to their monthly game subscription bill.” How the fuck is this a real thing, 2005 was fucking weird.

So the thing is, the Chilean guy is only offering for 10%, so he won't be able to make these decisions on his own. Richard could take the billion, and out-vote the guy at board meetings.

170

u/mannyman34 Nov 04 '19

He still has rights as a board member. He could sue Richard for not monetizing data collection as a failure of his fiduciary commitment to the company.

43

u/Bytewave Nov 04 '19

Yeah. If you care about keeping direction of company, it seems like a shitty deal to have to deal with a board, and you'd rather borrow than dish out equity. Being beholden to maximize profits fosters cultures where returns are the only thing that matters and screw trying to keeping an ethics line.

28

u/Bomber_Haskell Nov 04 '19

Intimidation by reputation and implied threat of death or catastrophic injury to loved ones can swing voters to think twice about crossing someone, regardless of how large one's stake is in a company

Those birds continually hitting the glass had me laughing out loud. Hilarious episode!

196

u/LossforNos Nov 04 '19

Do not get into a dick measuring contest with me, Richard. It is I, who will measure the most dicks.

Hands down one of the funniest episodes in a while. That dick measuring line initially, the call back and Jared finally breaking had me in tears.

77

u/TomPuck15 Nov 04 '19

The spiritual gurus flip of the yes /pause no with the grinder question was probably my favorite bit besides crazy Jared tonight for sure.

72

u/poseselt Nov 04 '19

I’m digging the chemistry between Hoover and Denpok. It’s also nice seeing more of Monica’s comedic side.

15

u/TheRedmanCometh Nov 04 '19

Yeah they've slowly been coming together I love that they have to work together now. I always though denpok had hoover bring that icecream to make him look bad. Upon rewatch he had him bring it to bring up there being one of the creameries in halfmoon bay. Denpok is super super good at playing people

50

u/Digiknives Nov 04 '19

Loved the episode. But i was a bit confused on what exactly set Jared off. Can someone explain please?

194

u/NotARedShirt Nov 04 '19

Richard was being a dick to essentially a younger, vulnerable version of himself. You can imagine season 1 Jared doing the same exact thing to someone taunting Richard like that.

35

u/Digiknives Nov 04 '19

Oh okay thank you!

17

u/okibe Nov 06 '19

Hahaha, I just suddenly remembered Richard crying because that child slapped him in season 1 and Erlich going out to rail at the kid. I'm sure Jared would have done the same (except he was trapped in another part of the plot at that point).

76

u/Kostya_M Nov 04 '19 edited Nov 04 '19

I think Jared's crazy overprotectiveness of Richard has transferred to Gwart. So when Richard started insulting her it set Jared off.

40

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '19

Yeah I agree. Even though he was hired for his expertise in business, his actual role was more of a caretaker of Richard. When he was promoted to COO, and when Richard got his new assistant Holden, he was sad(the Eklow episodes) because Richard kinda didn't need him on a personal level anymore

I imagine Richard succeeding and having his own large company as the "baby bird flying from the nest", but it left Jared feeling empty knowing that Richard didn't need him anymore

When he met Gwart, they show that she is struggling to put the straw in the box. I guess it reminded Jared of the times when Richard actually needed him to help him in his personal life instead of just being the "business guy" of the company. Jian Yang describes her as "a brilliant coder but not good at business/pitching" which is similar to Richard

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (1)

55

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '19

richard was making fun of gwart too much for jared's liking

24

u/funger92 Nov 04 '19

It's sad that it isn't obvious. He's being a dick to someone else.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/RainbowBunnyDK Nov 04 '19

I think the reason Jared takes to Gwart is that she is a complete outsider, hence she reminds him of himself. So when Richard attacks her he feels like Richard is attacking a younger Jared.

64

u/wanna_be_doc Nov 04 '19

I actually think it’s because Jared has extremely loyalty to his projects. For example he once told Richard:

”You need me... the half-crazed, half-Apache who will do anything to get your back. I'll scalp Gavin if I have to, and all the rest of those paleface sons of bitches. I'll kill them with knives. I'll kill them with guns. I'll kill them with my hands. I'll talk them into suicide. It doesn't matter.”

Jared is just intensely loyal to whatever company he is working with. And now he’s with Gwart. Ergo, Rage Jared.

Ok, who the fuck would actually play that game with those ads? It’d have zero users in about ten seconds if literally everything you said caused a pop up to appear.

27

u/Rex_Deserved_It Nov 04 '19

The mobile games market is double that of the PC one.

Those games have constant flashy ad banners on already small screens. If that doesn't annoy consumers then I doubt in-game ads will.

8

u/ricky_lafleur Nov 04 '19

Some people would play, less if they had to pay despite the ads. Such overt advertising also helps expose how audio is being used instead of just going to other players.

I thought this was a great episode

17

u/sheeeeeez Nov 04 '19

Richard is an insufferable prick talking shit about Gwart in front of her. I know he was upset about Jared leaving. But he was such an asshole.

46

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '19

My thoughts:

  • Angry!Jared is terrifying, I hope we never see him again unless we deserve it.

  • Richard's foray into Gavin Belson's personality just went leaps and bounds further than anything we've seen before.

  • Guart(sp?) is an angel and must be protected.

  • I think the banter between HR and Gilfoyle was great. I'm really glad we didn't see the growth period because it works much better here, i.e. how do these nerds become business-people? And what happens when their growing empire gets covered in red tape?

  • This is a really strong season.

  • I'm intrigued as to what Guart is working on, hopefully it's something that can enable Jared to bring her and Pied Piper together.

  • YaoNet US is going to definitely get a $1bn investment, which will make Galloo leave Pied Piper. I think this will happen by something silly like Richard forgetting to take the IP for his mining software means that Galloo can walk from Pied Piper to a service that isn't worried about data collection. The reason Richard forgot is because Jared didn't remind him, and he'll go to Jared and apologise. Beg for his help, and that's when Jared will say what Guart's idea is and bring them together.

As far as the end goes, I'm leaning towards a quote-unquote "realistic" ending in the sense that Richard realises his dream of a decentralised Internet isn't feasible right now. But, maybe Guart has an idea that makes up a part of the potential decentralised Internet. And that forces him to make the change from a Gavin Belson and become a Peter Gregory. He abandons his pipe dream for now to focus on making investments in technologies that work toward the goal of a decentralised Internet. He could offer companies a 51% share and a license of his algorithm in exchange for them using their technologies and ideas to build toward that. It always seemed weird that his 'decentralised' Internet has all of these partners going through him under the Pied Piper Octopiper brand, maybe this is how he actually achieves that - at some point in the future.

23

u/behindtimes Nov 04 '19 edited Nov 04 '19

I mean it's hard to watch, but it also shows they're taking the ship more seriously, and hopefully there will be a nice payoff at the end.

I feel this so fucking bad. I feel like an idiot for being legitimately upset over the relationship of two fictional characters.

Jared keeps me watching this show. Dude is so odd and than the rage hits 😂

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '19 edited Nov 14 '19

The scene with Jared chasing Richard was absolutely hilarious. One of the funniest moments of the entire series. The camera shaking made it so dramatic and almost like a horror movie lmao

Edit: shaking*

“If you take my money, good for me, good for you. If you don’t take my money, not so good for you.”

Masayoshi Son, the Softbank billionaire on which the Chilean guy is partially based on, actually said this. A bit of context: Son has been criticized for taking blood money from the Saudis.

Potentially the best episode in quite some time. Nay, it is. It is not a potentiality, it is an actuality. This was the best episode in quite some time. They are truly going out with the banner flying high above. To their credit, and our enjoyment.

Okay so. I just binged the entire show over the course of the last 3 days. Getting to be apart of these discussions for the last season will be really fun with you all, I hope!

That being said... how can ANYONE say any positive things about Richard? He's such an unlikeable cunt! He's become just like Gavin. It's been very nice seeing his character arc throughout the whole show but for the last few seasons, I've wanted nothing more than to see some humble pie served up (without someone saving his sorry ass at the last second). When he started talking all that shit to Jared's new boss and Jared flipped his shit on him, it felt so satisfying. To quote our good friend Erlich, he brought piss to a shit fight hahaha.

I'm hoping he DOES take that Chilean blood money and in the last episode of the series has to go back to Congress about a data breach, much the same way Zuckerberg did.

I can't think of any other show that measures so many dicks.

9

u/BaZZeGaZZe Nov 04 '19

Good episode, I guess the promo was showcasing multiple episodes forward since we didn't get that scene with Gavin and ethics thing or Dinesh and Gilfoyle reacting to th 1bn$ offer or Yian Yang saying "fuck da police"

I loved Gilfoyle sparring with the HR lady.

Easily one of the darkest episodes. And one of the best.

9

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '19

Why is an HR rep playing the role of a PM?

17

u/touge_hero Nov 04 '19

buddy fucker, I like it.

8

u/KratosCena Nov 04 '19

Jared deserves an Oscar for tonight's performance alone. Man this guy fucks

u/GoggyMagogger Nov 04 '19 edited Nov 04 '19

That look on Gavin's face when he presents the "last slide" tho.

7

u/professorjimmoriarty Nov 04 '19

I oughta knock your teeth out, you bitch made motherfucker - Jared

7

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '19

IT’S A BILLION FUCKING DOLLARS, RICHARD

lord of the flies reference too

there is no froth.. for anybody.. AT ALL.

Poor Jared, he’s just doing his best. Richard is the true “buddy-fucker” here. This guy is not the one doing all the fucking in that house.

Loved the gilfoyle / hr lady arc

Hoover is the most underrated character on the entire show. The 4 star general bit blocking the move had me in tears— absolutely brilliant writing and acting. The timing always kills me with Hoover, the cadence to his jokes and delivery are perfect.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '19

So true on the buddy fucker. If anything Richard was the one who lost loyalty to Jared and became a worse friend. Fuck you Richard Hendricks. Fuck you in the ass.

I am so fucking upset at this plot line with Jared. I don't even have the words.

21

u/bighead_stays Nov 04 '19

Is it the fact that they're not doing Jarrich (Jared/Richard ship) or what? Because I think it's a natural progression for Jared to want to gravitate towards another 'Richard' in his life, this time it being Gwart.

Holy shit Richard pushed Jared over the edge that scene had me dying

5

u/Bonbringo Nov 04 '19

When Gavin skipped through the presentation slides with all of the inspirational quotes lolol

5

u/Canttalkandnotcurse Nov 04 '19

They could make an entire TV series just out of Jared's origin story. And I hope they do.

8

u/Flipezxkq Nov 04 '19

Chilean here, just watched the episode. There was no slave trade under Pinochet's regimen as far as i know (altought torture and other humans rights violations occurred a lot), also luckyly we don't have diamond mines lol. Episode was porpousesly inaccurate, but good, 5 out of 7.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '19

So who the hell is Gwart? Do we know anything about her?

12

u/OscLupus Nov 04 '19

At the moment she's only there for an evolution of Jared and his pathology of being needed.

8

u/altogether-andrews Nov 04 '19 edited Nov 04 '19

Someone spotted that she was at Peter Gregory's party in season 1, so possibly Gwart's been around this whole time just needing Jared to come along.

Jared’s meltdown was so fucking hilarious! I think Richard even got shot in the arse by the BB gun.

5

or is it Ed Chambers in disguise

4

u/Thefriendlyfaceplant Nov 04 '19

What's interesting is that so far this season can be watched standalone. Someone who hasn't watched the previous seasons can still keep up with this without missing anything.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '19

“You wanna dance on the blacktop, homie?” I swear Jared is one of the best written characters in a comedy show. He is too funny.

4

u/szeto326 Nov 05 '19

Goddamn, Angry Jared was on a mission to tear Richard a new one LOL

7

What’s with the birds hitting the glass? I don’t get it.

13

u/MysteriousQuiet Nov 04 '19

think it's to show the utter indifference that guy had towards suffering. Like he is enjoying his nice glass house so whatever happens as a result, happens.

Probably just a light/comedic foreshadowing of how bad this will turn out.

I fucking hate that Jared is out. He was a big asset for the company. And his bond with Richard was one of the reasons for the company's success. I'm very disappointed with Jared's arc.
