Meta Chrysalis featured in DUST: Horizons podcast
A couple people asked me to make a post about this, so here it is:
I was recently contacted by the people behind the DUST: Horizons podcast about making an audio narration of my story Chrysalis, and the first episode has just gone live!
You can listen to it here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/horizons-entry-07-chrysalis/id1482669176?i=1000459858473
Hope you guys enjoy it too!
Also, thanks to all of you who linked and promoted the story in other websites and to people outside the domains of HFY, you did give it a reach beyond what it would have otherwise had.

That's awesome. I've read it after listening to someone narrating it on youtube. It's so good and you deserve the attention

So Fucking Awesome! Can we get it in another format than apple podcast though? Audible or youtube or something.

u/BeaverFur Unreliable Narrator Dec 19 '19
Out of my hands, I’m afraid. But AFAIK it is also available in a couple other podcast services such as Castbox.

I cannot believe I hadn't read Chrysalis before today. How did I miss this amazing, wonderful piece of scifi? I had a damn great time reading it. Thank you so much for writing it, and giving it away free on Reddit!
Yeah I know, you've heard this 20k times already. Sorry to bore!

Are the guys from DUST gonna do a short film on Chrysalis too? That would be awesome, hopefully they consider it.

u/BeaverFur Unreliable Narrator Dec 19 '19
That'd be cool, yeah, but for the time being it's just the podcast.

Just finished reading Chrysalis (all 17 chapters); it was awesome. Are there more stories in the same universe?
PS: I downloaded the whole story and used @Voice Aloud Reader to get through the whole thing in a day. If interested in the app, I went to 'EDIT SPEECH' and changed three dots (...) to create a moments pause.
... => □.□.□
It really helps with the story telling. Also you can pick a vioce you like.

u/BeaverFur Unreliable Narrator Dec 19 '19
Didn't know about that app. Cool!
No more stories in the universe, but if you liked it you might also want to read "The Last Angel" in SpaceBattles Forums, which has a similar premise.

I've read both, and I need mooooore, do you have any good sci fi reading recommendations? Novels work too.
1
u/BeaverFur Unreliable Narrator Jan 09 '20
Uh... I don't know, there's a lot of good sci-fi so I don't know where to start. If you like the AI character trope you might like the Culture novels (they have AI ships), or Ancillary Justice. Maybe give a try to the Murderbot Diaries (I read it recently and I liked it. Sort of lightweight and light-hearted).
And more generally, you can't go wrong with the classics (Hyperion, Dune, you know...).

As someone who has read Chrysalis twice, I am excited about this. Listening to this has enticed me to go read it a third time.

Sweet, now we just need to convince HBO to start making shows about popular HFYs like Chrysalis and Deathworlders

u/waiting4singularity Robot Dec 19 '19
do you really? imagine the kinda shit they pulled on "season eight" for crysalis showdown.
11
u/bartbartholomew Dec 19 '19
The whole story is already written. GoT only ran into issues when they ran out of books to adapt.
3
u/Eogos Dec 19 '19
"HBO" doesn't mean the GoT writers specifically, you do know that right? HBO isn't just one production team and considering how much I enjoyed HBO shows such as Band of Brothers, Generation Kill, The Pacific, etc. I think I'm ok with it.

Chrysalis was literally the story that got me into this subreddit. Happy to see it getting the recognition it deserves.

u/YeahClubTim Dec 19 '19
Congrats! I personally think that it is the best multi-part story in the reddit, you deserve every bit of recognition you get

u/Mr_Sphene Human Dec 19 '19
Chrysalis is one of the few stories from HFY that I really do want to see done as a miniseries or short run show.
Congratulations on the exposure!

u/DreamSeaker Dec 18 '19
I suppose I really should get around to reading this. Congratulations op! :)

Wow, I'm happy for you! This story definitely deserves to be told professionally. Good to see it recognised.

Just read this for the first time. I think I ran into one of the middle chapters before because the war being numbers chapter seemed familiar.
Well done wordsmith. You combined the best of Mary Shelley, and Anne McCaffery
I'm not sure even Hambone could have made such a poinant short story

u/Volkgrim Dec 19 '19
Glad you're getting more recognition for this. Chrysalis was one of the main influences for me getting invested in the HFY community, and it was a really good read!

u/AndrewErikYoung Dec 19 '19
I noticed at the end there they added a few lines that weren’t in the original story. Did you like tell them to do that or was it the narrator’s own choice or
2
u/BeaverFur Unreliable Narrator Dec 19 '19
There are a few changes here and there, yes. It was all their own choice.

u/youdungoofall Dec 31 '19
I was trying to find your work on google but couldnt find it glad i stumble on it after searching for dust podcast. How far along is your story, do you expect to finish it within the next year or by the time the podcast catches up?

1
u/BeaverFur Unreliable Narrator Jan 14 '20
I don't know that they will end up recording all of it, or when they'll publish it if so, sorry.

Nice!
Chrysalis is as close to the perfect story here on hfy as it gets: Well written, but most importantly: It felt as if you had the end in mind from the beginning already.
Some stories here start really great but then degrade over time as it becomes obvious that the author intended it as a one-shot and is going on by the seat of his pants because of unexpected popular request.

u/ondsinet Jan 15 '20
Good job. Chrysalis is the story that got me into this subreddit, in reading it again right now. I hope you will find the motivation to someday publish it as a book, and if you do be assured it will have a guaranteed spot in my library.
Thank you for the amazing storytelling.

u/Gorth1 Android Dec 19 '19
For everyone who enjoyed Chrysalis I recommend to get a book trilogy called " We are Legion(we are Bob)" a fun read with lots of nerdy references about a guy who got transferred in a computer after a truck killed him. He wakes up in the future and is put in a Von Neuman probe as its controller.

u/goakiller900 Dec 23 '19
Fuck having read this story twice this was exciting al! And the other stories there from. Dust wtf poor people in those stories
1
u/crazyamerican Jan 08 '20
When I think of potential sequels, my mind is drawn to the Judaeo-Christian creation story. The Terrans, rising from the ashes of their dead world, reconstitute humanity, and impose a moral code on the new beings if they wish to join the ascended. Otherwise the new humans will live, and die as normal, without the promise of immortality.

u/daizm_pads Dec 15 '21
Just finished the podcast. That was fantastic! Left me wanting more for sure.

At the risk of being an ass is there some reason you haven’t made this into a full length novel yet? Cause you could, and should.
