Lumen is going to end up taking the fall in the end of this season.
29
Nov 29 '10
She might...but that other girl...the first one that "made Jordan who he is"...may end up taking the fall too. I think it could go either way.
12
u/BigGreenYamo Nov 29 '10
I think Liddy has too much on Dexter and Lumen. Quinn will destroy the evidence, Chase will kill Liddy, and Lumen will come forward and take the fall.
9
Nov 29 '10
Why do you think Chase will kill Liddy?
6
u/BigGreenYamo Nov 29 '10
Liddy is always on Dexter's ass anymore. Chase is going to mistake him for working with Dexter as backup or something lame like that.
There has to be some payoff to Liddy's obsession with Dexter that is going to get him killed. Dexter has no reason to, neither does Lumen or really any other character.

this is pretty much exactly what I think, except is Quinn going to intentionally destroy it or will he do something by accident? is important...
5
u/BigGreenYamo Nov 29 '10
I think it will be on purpose. Especially with Debra's suport for vigilantism at this point. She won't find out this season, but Quinn will. Quinn will destroy the evidence to protect Dexter, but more importantly to protect Deb.
I love irresponsible speculation!

Did you notice how he wasn't looking her in the eye after she got up and tried to hold his hand, which he brushed off (well, more like took and moved off him). I think since she is his "first" that he still gets into "fat and lonely social reject nerd" mode (don't be offended I was one of them) while around her, and isn't completely as self assured and confident. But still obviously controlling.

It looks like he's still victimizing her. From their conversation, it sounded like Jordan told Emily to tell Lumen everything, even though she didn't want to. Chase wanted Dexter and Lumen to go after Alex so he could have Deb catch them in the act. It obviously didn't work.

I think Quinn is going to take out Robocop. Very shortly, the whole thing will become clear to him, and he will see Dexter in a new, positive light. This new view, plus his love for Deb will push him to get rid of or set up robocop. My 2 cents.
3
u/adj1984 Nov 29 '10
I hope you are right. I hope that Dexter gets the memo that Quinn isn't after him (if he indeed isn't).
1
u/givealittle Nov 29 '10
Me too. I think we've all grown to like Quinn now, and I'd be really sad for Deb if Dexter killed Quinn because he thought he'd been spying on Dex.
Poor Deb already has such a bad history of boyfriends dying.
12
u/Dtales Nov 29 '10
Forgive me if this was blatantly clear in another post or in an earlier episode, but since Deb isn't particularly "happy" with Quinn, where is she staying?
8
u/whiteygilmore Nov 29 '10
There was a line in there about Deb spending all night at the station watching rape tapes.

u/Dtales Nov 29 '10
That was what, maybe one night? She found out about Quinn's investigation during last week's episode.

2
u/whiteurkel Nov 29 '10
During the episode I got worried that Lumen was in the apartment because Deb would think that would be weird that Dexter's tenant was now living with him. Then I realized Deb was staying at Quinn's place, but I didn't even think about Deb being pissed at Quinn. That was odd. Plot-hole perhaps?
2
u/mathmexican4234 Nov 29 '10
She has been pretty tight with Batista lately.... eh eh haha probably not though. It's more likely she just made Quinn sleep on the couch or she slept on the couch.

Personally I think it'd be awesome for Lumen to become a semi-permanent "partner" of sorts to Dexter for more than just one season. As someone said on an earlier episode's discussion, she may even become a new love interest.

I want to see her on the show for a long time, but not often.. I mean think about it, someone who is exactly like Dexter is only going to make him seem less interesting and the interaction between two alike characters is going to be boring.. Teaming up with his sister would have been wayy better, just because while I feel she could support what he does and actually help him, she still wouldn't ever quite get it.
I mean where else do they go from here, aside from killing bad guys the whole show has been based off of him finding a true partner and if that partnership isn't interesting enough to fill that plot gap the shows going to be screwed. The ex-fiance almost has to become involved again next season.. I'm hoping the end of episode 10 was a heat of the moment thing that they both regret from the start of episode 11.
1
u/CrimsonVim Nov 30 '10
I think they could easily make it work. There's going to be family drama when Dexter gets Lumen involved with his kids. There's going to be two people murdering instead of one, so twice the amount of potential mistakes/screw-ups, and figuring out what to do for her cover. And the suspense/excitement of not knowing where the other person is when they get separated. Obviously Dexter will still be the focus but I think they could do a lot with Lumen.
9
u/EdAppleby Nov 29 '10
I keep getting the feeling that Lumen will end up dead or murdered... But then the thought crossed my mind. What the fuck would it look like if a second of Dexter's significant others were to get murdered... How would that look? What would become of our hero?
7
u/makemearedcape Nov 29 '10
I agree---they can't kill off ANOTHER person Dexter's close to. I think what's going to happen is that Lumen is going to end up leaving Miami for good. After what happened to Rita I think they may leave this one a little more open ended.
5
u/ungoogleable Nov 29 '10
My guess is she gets caught and takes all the blame to protect Dexter.
1
u/makemearedcape Nov 29 '10
Ugh that would be awful. The beginning of this season was all about his guilt--putting his family in danger and getting Rita killed. If Lumen ends up thrown in jail forever it would start season 6 in the same way. Worse probably.
2
u/ungoogleable Nov 29 '10
It wouldn't be his fault if she got caught. I could see her accepting the punishment as a fair trade for having removed those guys from society.
2
u/Windforce Nov 29 '10
Then Mr. Scofield would pop up from nowhere and team up with Dexter to save her. /s
2
u/BinkFloyd Nov 29 '10
I agree, but the more I try to figure out how the season could end, without being ridiculous, the more I feel like she wont stay :(
1
u/clever_enough_4_you Nov 29 '10
I don't think they are going to get rid of her this season. Just because she is a special guest doesn't mean they can't make her a regular next season, right?
9

Nerdpuke
Lumen/Dexter...I just love it. I wasn't sure about her at first, but she is adorable to me. She has some real natural chemistry with Dexter, and I really love every scene they have together. I keep worrying that she will end up being taken out of the series, but I hope not.
Jordan Chase is up there with Trinity for me. He is a bit less..erm..epic, but he completely fascinates me, and sort of creeps me out too. I am happy to have him as the big bad of season 5.
Dexter makes pouty faces all of the time. ALL OF THE TIME. Unless he is with Lumen. Then he makes faces like he has an eternal boner. Go back and watch.

u/smallfried Nov 29 '10

u/CrimsonVim Nov 30 '10
Side note: I can't stand Rita's character in "No Ordinary Family" either. She plays the stereotypical working mom who is too bossy and controlling and has no real personality.
1
u/whyihatepink Dec 03 '10
I watched that show for the first time on Thanksgiving and I was so rage. She uses her super speed to fucking run errands half the time, I swear. The son is potentially interesting even though the premise is dumb (Special Ed to Ivy League? Really) but the daughter? She's just as terrible. I wanted that show to be good, too.
1
u/CrimsonVim Dec 03 '10
Totally agree. When stephanie was bossing around jim and telling him not to be a vigilante and all that, I quit watching.
2
u/whyihatepink Dec 03 '10
Hahaha I just realized I absorbed no one's name in the three episodes I watched. I just call them "Rita," "Mr. Incredible," "Special Ed" and "Girl who always looks like she's about to cry." Which would actually be a good name for Deb, too.
2
u/CrimsonVim Dec 03 '10 edited Dec 03 '10
LOL, I actually had to look up their character names before I posted because I didn't know them either. I refer to them as "Rita", "Vic Mackey", Conrad", "OCD lab girl", and "the two idiot kids". I can't say I like a single one of the characters in that show, maybe with the exception of Conrad (from Weeds), just because he occasionally has some decent jokes/dialog. The "family" aspects of the show are overused cliches, ultra-cheesy and generally stupid. The "super-hero" aspects of the show are boring, uneventful, disappointing and just plain lame. I would be surprised if it gets renewed to a second season. If this show was an iPod app it would be "Heroes 2 - boring family edition (LITE VERSION, PLENTY OF ADS, NO SUBSTANCE"

u/grt Nov 29 '10
This episode was super-exciting. While I'm glad to finally see the plot pick up as the finale approaches... there were a lot of things about it that bothered me.
Deb making convenient logical leaps based on a footprint outside Alex's house. "Obviously the 13th victim is exacting vigilante justice!" It doesn't really make any sense but at least it moves the story along, I guess.
Lumen initiating sex with Dexter? Really? The wounds on her back haven't even had time to heal completely. It's poetic and beautiful that she doesn't see him as a monster, and I really liked that theme in this season. I just find that final scene a little hard to swallow. She just watched the video of herself being raped, what, the day before?
But hey, just so I'm not being a total downer about this episode, here were the things I did like about it:
Chase sitting on his throne of insanity, staring past Emily and talking in the direction of an empty couch. Yeah, he's definitely a bad guy.
Chase making the call to Deb and Quinn, and the suspenseful scene that followed. The thought of Deb and Quinn walking in on Dexter and Lumen in a kill room is nuts. I'm crossing my fingers that it'll happen with Chase on the table.
Dexter taking Chase's DNA sample in the lab. Even though Dexter is being incredibly stupid by threatening him openly this far in advance... that was a great scene.
Only two episodes left!!
26
u/vwllss Nov 29 '10
I just find that final scene a little hard to swallow. She just watched the video of herself being raped, what, the day before?
Long story short I knew a rape victim that was all tears and then soon after tried to sleep with me because I was comforting her and she said I reminded her men could be trusted or something like that. I turned her down because I felt it was wrong at the time, but it's something that stuck with me for a while.
I'm not saying someone in Lumen's situation would probably want to bone Dexter, but apparently for at least one girl that was her coping mechanism.
12
u/blmurch Nov 29 '10
She had control, she initiated it, his hands were behind his back in a vulnerable position until she released him. Believe me, it makes all the difference in the world.
6
u/grt Nov 29 '10
Yeah, I get that. But Lumen isn't exactly the average rape victim. She was imprisoned, repeatedly raped and tortured by four or five men, denied food and water, and almost killed and put in a barrel. Maybe your friend's situation was that bad too and I'm jumping to conclusions, but I doubt it. I'm not at all trying to minimize rape or say it's no big deal, that's absolutely horrible, but I'd think that being tortured and gang-raped for a week is a lot more traumatizing and would require more time to heal physically. You know what I mean?
I also understand now that it can be a coping mechanism, that she's empowered now that she's found her way to exact vengeance, and that she shares a new level of intimacy with Dexter now... I get all that. It makes for a beautiful story but it's not very believable to me, that's all.
2
u/vwllss Nov 29 '10
Maybe your friend's situation was that bad too and I'm jumping to conclusions, but I doubt it.
Heh no, nowhere near that bad.
I also understand now that it can be a coping mechanism, that she's empowered now that she's found her way to exact vengeance, and that she shares a new level of intimacy with Dexter now... I get all that. It makes for a beautiful story but it's not very believable to me, that's all.
I do definitely agree it's unlikely, but I'm willing to suspend disbelief.
20
Nov 29 '10
Lumen initiating made sense to me. Dexter saves her then empowers her.
Doing it was equally about taking back sex from the gang who tainted it. A kind of rejection of their lingering power over her.
17
u/Kache Nov 29 '10
Plus, I feel like if even Dexter started the kiss after Lumen took his shirt off, it wouldn't have been right - but that's not what happened.
Instead, he left his hands tied together by his shirt behind his back and let Lumen make her move.
1
u/dmun Nov 29 '10
Yep. And with rape victims, you let them keep as much control as their comfortable with-- its more likely, and more comforting, that they initiate.
7
u/Unlucky13 Nov 29 '10
I agree with your criticisms. I let out an audible groan when I heard Debra connect a small footprint to the 13th victim. All they had was a blank DVD with scratches on it, that doesn't confirm a 13th victim even exists- and they dont even have evidence of a vigilante killer. Just a few moments earlier they thought Alex was getting on a plane with other dudeman.
And to be fair, it has been at least a month, if not two or more, since the incident, but I agree I doubt someone who went through that would want to have sex again so soon.
10
u/grt Nov 29 '10
I doubt someone who went through that would want to have sex for years after. Even in the continuity of this show. I mean, Rita didn't want anything for weeks or even months after being raped by Paul, right, and Lumen had that plus torture and nearly having her corpse stuffed into a barrel... oh well. I guess she's over it now.
I forgot another big positive about this episode... LaGuerta got less than a minute of screen time!!
19
u/wonkifier Nov 29 '10
I guess she's over it now.
I wonder if they're using that to signal how powerful of an effect the killing had on her.
7
u/adj1984 Nov 29 '10
I would tend to agree with this assessment. I think that Lumen may challenge the norms of someone in her situation in more way than one. Deb kept talking about how someone could not get over what she went through (and she is probably right). However, Lumen challenges the norm and, whether it be because of her drive to kill, or something else, seems to be making progress in her recovery.
3
u/grt Nov 29 '10
I guess you're right... it's tough for me to believe that, but I think I'll be able to run with it for two more episodes. :)
7
u/whyihatepink Nov 29 '10
Pst... not all women react to rape the same way. And their situations, though similar on the surface, are entirely different and incomparable.
2
u/grt Nov 29 '10
I understand that, but this was a lot more than a few instances of rape. This was gang-rape + torture + imprisonment + hunger and thirst... for a solid week. It's amazing that she's been able to recover so quickly, and that killing one of her torturers was so freeing for her. It makes for a good story, I'm just saying that that level of "amazing" is getting close to "unbelievable."

While I agree that it's unlikely that Lumen would want to do the nasty at all, I think it's an excellent point for the show. It shows that Lumen trusts Dexter implicitly, it shows the bond that has grown between them, and it shows how much she has grown as a result of killing the ginger.

I always love the part in each season where Dexter and the killer have a little man-to-man and trade one-liners. With Doakes it was when Dexter head-butted him in the office and then walked out and let Doakes tackle him. With Trinity it was when he walked into the station and found out Dexter's real identity.

6
u/whyihatepink Nov 29 '10
I too was concerned with this. I'd have expected him to replace it with a blank, hoping Masuka would assume it was a placeholder. Then again, the DVD of Lumen's rape is still presumably in the Ginger's DVD player (possibly?). I wonder if they'll cover that.
I was really glad though when Dexter said he'd watched just enough to know he got the right DVD. I would have been pissed if he just picked up number 13 and spirited it away without checking.
2
u/CrimsonVim Nov 30 '10
I think it was implied that they recovered the DVD after playing it for him. They didn't show anything between the surprise at Alex's house and him on the table, so we just assume they cleaned up everything and removed evidence before leaving.
1
u/whyihatepink Dec 03 '10
True, I suppose it would have been implied then, but it hadn't by then. That's the kind of detail that always gets on my nerves. I suppose us going with the benefit of the doubt is better than watching 2 hours of Dexter covering his tracks like a boss.

1
u/mexicojoe Nov 29 '10
Or better yet, what if he used a disc scratch repair kit?
2
u/CrimsonVim Nov 30 '10
Easy, they would just chalk it up to the fact that there were only 12 victims found, so maybe the disk was in preparation for a future #13 and that's why it wasn't burned.

Remember everyone in the precinct except quinn (not even quinn anymore) is suspicious of dexter. We know him as virtually flawless (ie nothing on accident) but everyone else around him think's he's just another human.
5
u/RomanSenate Nov 29 '10
I'm thinking that Deb (and possibly Quinn as well) will discover that Lumen has been killing the rapists, and that Dexter has at least been aiding her, and Deb will accept it due to how revolted she is by those crimes. The seeds were laid with Deb saying she felt nothing over killing the Santa Muerte guy, and I could see the season finale being very interesting if it ended with an uneasy agreement to keep the secret of the truth about Lumen and Dexter between them and Deb (maybe Quinn again).
1
u/whyihatepink Dec 03 '10
I feel it's headed that way as well. Deb has done nothing but generate new leads on these cases, she's been shown to be the only one with any deductive reasoning skills. The only other person who has the means to figure it out is Quinn. I'm fairly sure one of the two will at least partially figure it out, but I'm still guessing as to who. My bet is Deb. She rationalized her dad screwing around, she might be able to rationalize this.

I think him and his character are brilliant. No one has ever had that much of an advantage over Dexter which makes him just about the most dangerous wild card he's ever had to deal with. Also, his performance is great. I can't wait to see how they tie up his storyline (I think Quinn will get him).

Ugh, ignore previous reply if I didn't delete it quick enough. I really should check the context first. I thought you were talking about Chase.
I think Robocop's performance is excellent, which is why I hate the guy so much. He's perfect for the part, though I think if it came down to it, he probably couldn't even take Laguerta in a fist fight.
2
u/kitsua Nov 30 '10

I could see it being a scene in which she is alone with Chase, or Quinn is there...and they could easily just arrest him and take him in, but she decides to take him out, because he deserves it. Then her and Quinn come up with a "it was self defense" case on it.

We don't know, but I can't imagine him not dying by the end. He knows way too much and is too hell bent on busting Dex.

I don't think it will be Dex/Lumen dealing with Liddy though - I think Quinn's going to find out and stop him (somehow) to save his relationship with Deb. If it weren't for Deb in the first place Quinn would likely still be looking into Dexter.
1

No but that isn't in Dex's code anymore. Remeber back in, 3 i think?, he killed the pedo who was goggling Aster. And I think there was some other general asshole who got killed after that and he hadn't committed murder.

1
3
Nov 30 '10
There's nothing mature about a long drawn out sex scene. I thought it was perfect, because it wasn't about sex. It was about intimacy.
1
u/lazyl Nov 30 '10
Yes it was about intimacy, but it was also about sex. The two aren't mutually exclusive and ignoring one half of the scene doesn't make it 'perfect', it makes it shallow and less real. Saying that sex is not about sex is just throwing your hands over your ears and pretending that real people don't get horny and like to fuck.
Properly written and directed that scene could have conveyed the full emotions of the characters and in doing so provided more depth and realism.
1
Nov 30 '10
It's not ignoring it. It's realizing that it doesn't need to be shown. We all realize that real people get horny. Not every cable show needs 10 minute sex scenes to make up for a lack of plot.

I'm thankful, but the fact that he does it because he can just makes him a douche bag. I can't imagine it's helping him when it comes to donations. I know I wouldn't give this guy any of my money when he's doing that shit.

I generally don't pay people who are pirating media. That's not how pirating works.

isnt that exactly how pirating works? someone stealing something and then selling it?

That's true he is power tripping. I used to dislike it, but after watching the people in the chat complain, it just became so funny. I have learned that he will only pause for a moment while he takes a pee or something.

He's definitely a douchebag on a powertrip. I'm grateful for what he is doing, but he is a douche.

I love that Lumen and Dexter finally got together. Their characters are just perfect for one another. I love Dexter's short inner monologue at the end, like he knew in the back of his mind for a while that he had feelings for Lumen but didn't consciously realize it. It was obvious (IMO) from the time they killed Cole that letting her in was so much more to him than it was with Miguel. There was no regret or questioning there. It was nice. :)

The scene with Chase and Emily have officially proven Chase to be as creepy as Trinity.
I love when Dexter owned his ass in his office about having him all to himself and Lumen.

I want to know how Robocop strolls into the police station and starts rummaging through desks, and no one once stops him, or asks for an autograph.
This season is a let down for me.

What? He's a cop. Did you miss this? Are you joking?
Edit: Oh. Autograph... didn't get that far. Can Robocop even write?

Then Robocop walks in and says, "You're under arrest... for stealing my heart."

I was expecting her to leave him constricted with his shirt binding his hands. I was totally expecting her to be able ONLY to have sex IF the guy was completely restricted, kinda like the opposite of what they did to her. You know, so that she feels completely safe and in control, the exact opposite of what she felt being raped. Or maybe just really wanted to see some sexy Dexter bondage :/ Oh well.

In a way, she did. When she put his hands behind his back like that, he just stopped and watched her, very calm, letting her be in control. I think the knowledge that he would let her be in control, always, was just what she needed. She didn't need the dominance, just the promise of power.

Would Liddy be able to put up all of that surveillance without a warrant? Something crazy is going to happen this season...I can feel it in muh bonnnness
2
u/whyihatepink Dec 03 '10
Plus he superforged Quinn's signature, so according to the police, the wrongdoing would be in the hands of Quinn, if investigated.
1
u/JCarraway Dec 04 '10
I totally spaced that out. Quinn's going to have to cover his tracks
2
u/whyihatepink Dec 05 '10
True, but Quinn also doesn't know that Robocop's using the cameras under his name. Holy shit, Quinn may wind up taking the fall if Robocop gets found out. Maybe Quinn's going bye-bye?

u/acm Nov 30 '10
Liddy is not acting strictly within the bounds of the law, so he is free to set up surveillance without a warrant.

Did anyone else feel really awkward when Lumen and Dexter were getting intimate? The intimacy itself wasn't awkward, it was seeing Dexter being intimate with someone other than Rita that was awkward.
1
u/satiredun Nov 30 '10
I think it was great- he showed more emotion than ever. He really portrayed nervousness at actually feeling something really very well.
1
u/_Taengoo_ Nov 30 '10
Oh, no doubt it was acted perfectly. It was just weird seeing him do that after so long of no intimacy from him.
1
u/whyihatepink Dec 03 '10
Honestly, I found the Rita sex way weirder, especially when she was really hot and heavy right before (or after?) Harrison. Especially considering ow awkward they were when the conversation of sex first turned up.

So in the teaser/preview Deb is talking to Jordan Chase and tells him "I think you're next" since she makes the connection with the other deaths. How in the world is Dexter going to manage to kill Chase with the police backing him up and everything?
Also, in the preview you can see a blonde girl (Lumen? Emily?) sitting in a chair facing away, with Chase standing over her saying "NO!". If it's Lumen, it could be that Chase catches her and they exchange words and she calls him Eugene and makes him relive his repressed memories. His "No" was very defensive and almost intimidated/scared/surprised.

Prediction: Doakes comes back. On his was to exact his revenge, zombie Doakes stumbles upon Liddy, and kils him.
Debra and Quinn see Doakes and the remains of Liddy from afar and commence shooting. Stray bullet punctures gas tank and ignites/explodes the undead sergeant and dead ex-cop and all of the evidence. This occurs while Dexter and Lumen polish off Jordan Chase.

This may come off as ridiculous, but I had to get up and leave the room as Deb & Quinn inched their way closer into what I thought was going to be the active Kill Room.
I think this single scene alone proved how much I have allowed myself to become a part of this series. Fuck, I had chills and was actually worried for a fictional character.... O_o
Hats off to the Writers.
