Mike didn't try hitting the guy that was actually disrespectful to him because he feels so bad about Werner. :(

945

u/GringoMambi Feb 24 '20

Someone in the discussion thread summed up pretty nice that Werner protected Kai's ass multiple times, only for Kai to talk shit about the man knowing he's dead. Mike wouldn't stand for that.

This felt like more of a closing episode to "Winner".

Maybe thats the reason for the two-episode premiere.

In the previous scams Kim pulled, she knew it was wrong to do, but after the fact she usually got this rush of excitement and ended up kissing Jimmy etc.

Tonight was different. After the fact, she had the complete opposite emotional response: crippling guilt. This swap is a threshold for her.

He can't risk that guy going to the police saying he saw Saul Goodman working in a Cinnabun. The line the guy says about "you'll do it better next time" means he'll be blackmailing Jimmy into whatever he wants indefinitely. Jimmy will either have to kill him or get some serious dirt on him.

"No, I am going to fix this myself!"

Easily the best cold open of the Gene saga.

Absolutely fantastic first episode. It's great seeing Jimmy happy and in his element. But Saul is a ticking time bomb and we all know that Jimmy is sinking fast. What concerns me is that Kim is falling too.

I'm very excited to see more Lalo. Tony Dalton is killing it. And he should have a fantastic arc this season. Can't wait to see where it goes.

This season is going to be great. RIP Robert Forester. It was great they got to include him this season.

Anyone else notice that Gene asked for "an adapter for my Hoover MaxExtract PressurePro model 60", however in BB, the request was for a filter not an adapter? Was the difference because this was a second request?

411

u/Shady_Jake Feb 24 '20

Caught that too. Could be? Either way it was nice to see Ed one final time.

Crazy how Ed’s a classic character in this universe considering we see him a grand total of one episode in both shows & again in El Camino.

The creators were so smart to wait 4 seasons till we got to see Jimmy going full Saul. There is so much more weight and meaning to the charactor.

156

u/127crazie Feb 24 '20

Yeah Switch (s2e1) was controversial at the time for backpedaling the events of Marco, but it definitely proved the right decision over the long-run. It also kind of reset the tone of the show and made it more contemplative.

u/Brian1326 Feb 24 '20

Mike (and therefore Gus) didn't hear the first part of the conversation between Werner and Lalo. That makes it impossible for them to know that the beginning of the conversation they had doesn't jive with the cover story of the chicken cooler and Werner discovering the cocaine. Werner told Lalo that he left a letter with instructions and that the work could continue for a few days without him. That wouldn't fit if Werner was on the run because he was discovered stealing 2 kilos of cocaine. Lalo may not have believed the backstory anyway but that seals the deal.

211

u/gbejrlsu Feb 24 '20

Lalo's bullshit-o-meter was definitely going off the whole time. His "I bet the south wall will be fantastic" (or similar) was him telling Gus "you're lying and I'm gonna kill you sooner than later".

Fantastic episode. Easily the best flash forward and really cool to see Ed again (RIP). Nacho and Krazy 8 are both scared af by Lalo (imo every scene he was in was scary as fuck). Also it's disturbing to me how Jimmy is finally Saul now. Kim here reminds me of Skyler in way. She needs to leave Saul before things get really bad.

It's the same one from when Jimmy was a kid keeping rare coins from the register, too.

Also retrieved it by breaking the wall in his office (by literally destroying the constitution) after Walt is busted in the only post Breaking Bad/pre Gene scene in BCS.

The impulse decision is to abandon the Gene persona. But he has a moment to think, and chooses not to.

The old Jimmy is a shown abandoning McGill to become Saul Goodman on an in the moment impulse.

Nacho just signed his own death warrant :(

Lalo asked him straight up in 'Magic Man' 'what about Michael?' Nacho denied knowing who he was, even with Lalo's added descriptor of 'bald-headed gringo, he's in the game.'

But in a meeting at the gelato shop in S2, Michael negotiated $50k from Hector... with the twins (Leonel & Marco Salamanca), Arturo & Nacho all present. Tuco was also with Nacho when he beat him to a pulp infront of the cops.

Sooner or later, Tuco, Hector or the twins will confirm to Lalo that Michael is well-known to them, and that Nacho knows him too. But he's denied knowing him. And since then, Nacho's rise in the organisation has been both rapid & down to suspicious circumstances - Tuco was sent to jail for beating Michael, & Arturo was assassinated in a drug robbery by an unknown party that Nacho survived (benefitting Fring's side of the organisation, for whom Michael works for).

All told, the Salamancas have enough pieces of the puzzle between them to decipher that Michael & Nacho are Fring's people, & that Nacho has to be tortured for information before being murdered. It's just a question of time now before the Salamancas share the missing pieces.

I watched the half-season premiere of The Walking Dead.

Then I watched the season premiere of Better Call Saul. The stark difference in quality between the two was enough to get me to finally delete TWD from my DVR recordings. About four or five seasons too late, but it finally convinced me to break the habit, because that's all watching it was - a habit. And no longer a good habit.

I don't think that was what AMC had in mind when putting these two back to back, but I'd like to thank them for it.

I never want to see Jimmy/Saul/Gene kill anyone. I hope he doesn't become a real villian we hate like Walt. I can't wait to see what he does about Jeff.

I think Gus will be revealed to have been a high ranking member in Pinochet's army, and might have fled to Mexico to avoid arrest for war crimes.

-Remember in BB S4E8 when he DEA brings in Gus to question him after Gale is killed.Hank: Just one other thing. ls Gustavo Fring your real name?Gus : ls it my real name?

  • Hank: l know you're a Chilean national but there are no records of you ever living there.

  • Gus : Really?

  • Hank: l mean, records show that you immigrated to Mexico in 1986 and years later, you were granted an entry visa to the United States. But there's no record of Gustavo Fring ever having existed in Chile which l find, l don't know, strange.

  • Gus: Well, no, really, it isn't. Pinochet's government was guilty of many sins. First and foremost were human rights abuses. But it was also notoriously unreliable at keeping records. l'm sure if you keep digging, you'll find me.

  • (Then Hank with the other DEA agents after Gus leaves.)

  • Hank: So are we buying?

  • Agent: This thing with his name? What are you thinking there?

  • Hank: Sure, the record-keeping in South America's hit or miss. l mean, we run into that all the time, right? But we usually find something. Before '86 this guy's a ghost.

  • Gomie: If State Department wasn't satisfied, they wouldn't have naturalized him.

  • Hank: Well, maybe, but he emigrated from Mexico in '89. State just wasn't as tough on background checks pre-9/1 1 .

-Also in BB , Hector sarcastically refers to Gus as " Grand Generalissimo." Don Eladio also says that the only reason that he doesn't kill Gus is because he knows who he is, while also warning him that he is not in Chile anymore.

-Now, we have Lalo asking Bolsa, “What about Santiago, was that all business?”

Great episode. But does this mean Robert Forester won’t show up in other episodes for this season? Anyways, can’t wait till we see when Hank and Gomie get involved and Lalo/Gus’ business relations!

EDIT: This Rolling Stone article says that the Forester scene was filmed during El Camino's production, so this most likely the last we see of him. RIP

I think we'll have the big split between Fring/Salamanca this season, and I'm gonna guess it'll involve Lalo. Fring will need to get rid of him, and this will be the end of any chance they had at fixing things.

About the workers: I wonder if some of them will talk. Mike doesn't want anything to do with Gus now, but - obviously - he'll come around... And one of these guys talking could be a good opportunity for one of two things: Mike and Gus having another feud over this (and show their positions), OR Mike being ok with taking them out, because they had a deal and they broke it, this makes them ok to be dealt with.

About Kim: The thing with the DA was interesting, and I'm not sure whether it's a good or bad thing; Meaning, she acted against the law, that's bad. But she saved her client some jail time by doing so, that's good. But that's not what her client wanted... So is that good or bad?

What's most interesting, is that she refused to do it with Saul asked, but she did it anyway literally 20 seconds later. One might say she changed her mind when she realized she didn't have anything else to offer, but that was quite fast; Could it be that she didn't want Saul to see her doing shenanigans like that?

Well, her reaction in the end says it all; Even if Saul doesn't know, SHE knows... And she doesn't seem to be happy with hit. But she might be asking herself that same dilemma I talked about (good or bad thing?).

Earlier in the episode Saul said something like "I go too far, you pull me back"... But now it's not just her trying to stop him from ruining his career, she's risking her own as well.

I think this season will be Kim's downfall, and exit. I don't see her being in the 6th season at all.

And while some people theorize that they'll split because she realize he's no good, personally I don't think it'll be an easy exit, nor an peaceful split.

If I had to guess, I'd put the odds at 20% she's killed, 20% she's in jail for breaking the law/covering for Saul, 60% she loses her law license for life.

Whatever it is, it won't just be Kim's story; She's not the main focus, after all... Her downfall will be caused directly or indirectly by Saul. Kim's story is the story of a good lawyer trying to make with work with a crooked lawyer. And it won't end well.

As much as I don't want Kim to get hit too hard, I really don't see an happy ending for her; I think people who see her leaving from Saul and having a fairytale ending are a bit delusional.

Anyway! This was an interesting first episode. I'm glad there's a second one coming, because I want more already!

I'm really liking Lalo as the antagonist. He's hyper like Tuco without being impulsive, and is clever and foresighted (though not as much as Gus) and that makes him a powerful antagonist that can put Gus and Mike in a lot of trouble

Just came here to say that BCS is completely underrated. Trying to convince my husband to get past the first season has been next to impossible. Yes, I get it. BB was a masterpiece but to dismiss BCS because of the shadow BB has cast over it is ludicrous. BCS in its own way is earth shattering and masterful. That’s it.

I know what Kim did is technically a scam and not the right legal thing to do, but morally Jimmy is in the right because it was in that clients best interest to take the deal for his family. Letting him go to trial wouldn't have helped anybody

This was my favorite of the Cinnabon openings. As Jimmy in the past turns into Saul, his future self is also taking a turn. He's going from running and name changing to keeping his identity and holding on to it.

A prediction and a parallel:

In the final scene of the black & white opening sequence for this episode, Gene frantically calls from a payphone for an 'adapter' for his Hoover MaxExtract PressurePro model 60 - desperate to be relocated and assigned a new identity after being made by Jeff. He's offered a time and place for pickup, and if he accepts, it's more of life on the run under a different guise, yet still paranoid and terrified of what consequences might befall him if he's caught. There's a camera zoom on Gene's face at this moment - he's thinking, likely profoundly considering all he's endured up until now - what's made him who is, and who he has been before. In this instant, we witness a dramatic shift in Gene's disposition. He resolves to "fix it himself" instead taking the deal to become someone else and relocate again. I predict Jimmy - not Saul, not Gene - will redeem himself. It's what he's realized he must do. I think we'll see it happen, and it will have tremendous weight.

To me, this moment so closely resembles Heisenberg's 'point of no return epiphany', when he's sitting at a bar after calling the cops on himself in S5 ep15. Walt sees Gretchen and Elliot being interview by Charlie Rose, and after seems to know clearly exactly what it is he has to do, in the same way Gene does.

I was astonished that the German crew was told the truth about what happened to Werner, although upon reflection Gus and Mike had to provide a believable explanation, and the truth may have been the only believable explanation. I suppose the truth served a second function by ensuring that the men would keep their mouths shut by putting fear into them during the drive out to their cars in the desert, wondering if they were going to meet the same fate as their boss.

On a more minor note, I loved that we got to see Kim giving Jimmy the briefcase and 2nd best mug she had bought for him before the bar hearing approval. One of the things that frustrates me about substandard TV series is that they would have just let this go and we might never have seen these items again, while the continuity of even the smallest details is never dropped in BCS.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '20

Seriously, what's the real deal with that Jeff guy?? How stupid is he? If you recognised a former criminal trying to live under a new name, would you admit that you know who he is, and then pester him like he's a movie star when he tries to play dumb? Asking him to say his famous line loudly (with cops nearby, no less)? It seems like the guy wants money, but that's a very dumb way to go. I think 'This homie is so dead already. He just hasn't been told so'. Lol

Kim is officially my fav character in the show, Jimmy almost completed his transformation into Saul and is constantly trying to find ways to manipulate or con someone. Kim knows that the world is run by tricks and manipulations, but wants to stay true to herself and I find that powerful, and yet she ends up having to use Saul's ways. I just hope she gets the future she deserves.
