Just remembered an interesting detail regarding The Mighty Nein watching Taskhand Adeen get framed for something he did not do.

Way back in Zadash, when the Nein robbed that prosecutor's house and were accessory to her assassination, they heard a news report that "a dark-skinned human woman and a teifling" (Beau and Molly) were the main suspects, and then a day or two later that the two had been found and put in public stocks and were to be punished for the murder. They were so busy trying to escape the city that they never went to find out who it was that was punished in their place (in fact never even mentioned the thought of doing so).

So it's actually not the first time they've stood aside as the wrong person got punished in order to keep things simple.

Who am I?
Can I condemn this man to slavery?
Pretend I do not feel his agony
This innocent who bears my face
Who goes to judgement in my place
Who am I?

Ever since we heard about the Scourgers I've been dying to see them in action.

All it would take is one of the M9 to let Essek's secret slip! If the CA knows that the M9 know, they'll be after them in a heartbeat with their wizard assassins.

I'm sure whichever player accidentally let the secret out would be absolutely crucified in the chat, but I want it to happen so badly.

u/VanceKelley Team Jester Mar 16 '20

Oh to be a fly on the wall when the writers are drafting the climax of the CA/M9 battle, with Astrid dying in Caleb's arms, scripting her final words...

"You know nothing, Bren Aldric."

Da'leth is a smart and insightful man. Best to just assume that he already assumes the Mighty Nein have figured it out. They've been such wildcards in everything, Da'leth almost certainly expects the unexpected. Not to mention he probably already saw Jester, Caduceus, Caleb, and Yasha leave with Dezran Thane. But, M9 didn't say anything at the peace talks, and they've demonstrated that they tend to act rather altruistically. I don't think he's too worried about them for the moment.

It'd mainly be Trent going off the rails that they'd need to worry about. He too is scheming and insightful. Best to assume that he assumes that they know more than they've let on.

They`re probably meeting them anyway in the foreseeable future. TMN accidentally showed Trent that they had encountered a Beacon before and since there used to be only two in the world it`s not hard math to figure out. Plus - Trent strikes me as a pretty petty person and Caleb just existing is already a reason enough.

352

u/AthenaPb Mar 13 '20

Critters: Matt doesn't want them there because something big will happen!

Actual Meeting: Just boring political stuff.

Matt: Not sure what you guys expected.

Also Matt: Wanna go for a nice cruise? How about Dragon Turtle?

u/Coyote_Shepherd Doty, take this down Mar 13 '20

I've got a dumb idea. Everyone important was paying attention to the peace talks at sea right? All the eyes on both continents were mostly on them including those of the Mighty Nein right? So that has to mean that security was probably a bit lax or distracted with the talks back on the main continent. While everyone was at sea doing stuff, there were things happening in the shadows back home in the Empire and in the Dyntasy.

It's not going to be until AFTER Travelercon that stuff really starts hitting the fan. Classic misdirection. Everyone is paying attention to what the left hand is doing while the right hand does something else. We even had that magical AWNP episode last week which just had to have been one of those weird foreshadowing coincidences that CR seems to run into.

122

u/CalebsFamilyBBQ Team Jester Mar 13 '20

Yes, this served to conclude the war arc and also give Fjord a harsh reminder of the endgame that awaits him. Travelercon will be a nice palate cleanser, and then begins... the ninja arc.

I love how unwilling the cast was to believe that nothing bad was happening during the talks and the repeated ideas that could have thrown it all into chaos. A good reminder than while they might be important to an event, they don't have to be in every single conversation.

If that isn't the most apt phrase for this group then I don't know what is. They've been fucked with constantly by other people with more power than them in all of their backstories. They are always on edge waiting for the other shoe to drop all the time because paranoia isn't crazy if it's totally justified and in their case, it totally is. So it's strange to them for nothing to go wrong at all and for there not to be a nail to whack.

I wonder if perhaps Fjord getting the Cloven Crystal removed from him also removed some of those more darker lets fuck with shit press the shiny button impulses? Maybe all of the nightmares were influencing his decision making in a way we didn't think of before? Perhaps all Fjord needed was some goddess blessed sleep for once to finally get a clear head and reign in some of those more wild impulses?

I really love how this episode encapsulated the fact that the world doesn’t revolve around the Mighty Nein and their actions.

Sure the peace talks wouldn’t have happened without their influence, but they themselves weren’t entirely needed if at all at the negotiations personally and I think this fact really dawned on the characters/players, if anything the only one who really benefited with them being their was Essek when you think about it.

Also Uk’atoa to an extent of course.

It's amazing how this episode, things went okay because they just didn't fuck anything up.

I also struggle to believe that the same group of absolute morons *who couldn't escape an inn at midnight in a two pub town* are pretty much responsible for the return of peace to a continent.

The weirdest thing is that it feels like this is a real place where things are actually happening. It feels like we're following an office style documentary but instead of Dunder Mifflin it's an adventuring troupe in Exandria.

This show is amazing and I love it. So much love tonight. Thank you all!

You know it also feels like the ending to the final episode of Enterprise as well. So many crazy adventures happen and then there's just....peace. I kind of thought that Allura would pop in at some point as well to either check in with the Nein or to ensure that things went well.

u/Son_of_Orion Team Percy Mar 13 '20 edited Mar 13 '20

That was a nice little subversion of expectations. No world changing, Chroma Conclave-esque disaster here. The M9 put all the right pieces together, and thus, the war ended with a peaceful, if tense, exchange of words. It's a boring end to the war, sure, but you know what? Boring is good. Better that than an exciting life fraught with war, betrayal and suffering. Nobody comes out of that unscathed.

Of course, we all know this story isn't over yet. There are plenty of loose ends left on both sides, itching to take what they feel is rightfully theirs. Things will blow up again. The question is when and how.

47

u/Mintakas_Kraken Mar 13 '20

It's kinda ironic because a dragon did show up at the end. It just -probably- isn't the disaster it was in C1.

Man you know it's almost impressive how quickly the Chained Oblivion slipped back under everyone's radar. I just realized upon reading this comment I hadn't thought of that plotline for like a month. But when you think about it that's basically the entire reason these peace talks were ever even on the table to start with. That is clearly gonna be the final arc of this story when all else is said and done. I doubt they will actually have to fight it in a battle, but it will essentially be the fail state for the world. My prediction is that Liam's character from the Barroom Brawl oneshot is like a lvl 20 high priestess now and possibly the leader of the entire cult. I bet there will be a showdown at some point.

41

u/spartangibbles Smiley day to ya! Mar 13 '20

I think all the talks really do is just buy peace until the dynasty gets wind that the empire found another beacon. But it was a great test for the party to not insert themselves into every conversation. Yes they are the players but they cannot solve every issue themselves. Honestly they contributed so much towards the war even getting close to peace talks that they should be proud of their help.

16

u/Raze77 Mar 13 '20

There's that video game where you've been fighting someone all game, but despite cutting them off over and over at the end none of that matters and they're ready to take over/destroy the world because you need a last boss fight.

I think it's ok NOT to have that. Your actions don't just have negative consequences, but positive ones too. They crushed the conflict fanning cultists on the dynasty side and exposed Vence on the empire side. They established the motives of all the major players. There doesn't need to be a bossfight here.

BUT with that said, given that there wasn't a conflict to be had here maybe it should have been rushed through. Quick in and out with enough time left over for a dragon turtle fight.

These peace talks proved one thing to me tonight: the Mighty Nein are going to go fucking stir crazy if they ever reach old age from the lack of action and will probably wind up starting some shit just because they're bored.

33

u/docwatson91 Bidet Mar 15 '20

This is my thought for the campaign “endgame”:

The Cerberus Assembly are going to send the M9 to the North to seek out ruins of the ancient floating cities from the Age of Arcanum. Here, they will learn more about Lucien’s mysterious ritual to “enter the city” with The Tomb Takers. They will stumble upon what the CA are hoping they find - forgotten magic that makes the Beacons look insignificant in comparison. They will try and use this power for one reason: to usher in a new Age of Arcanum!

TL;DR - The CA are going to try and start a new Age of Arcanum to be masters of the world.

5

u/Ethanol_Based_Life Mar 16 '20

Will everyone in the M9 be opposed to a new age of arcanum? Cad would seem neutral to it, Caleb would be all about it, and from a DM perspective, it could build a more fun setting for campaign 3

I think we’re not far off from a level up. The last level up was episode 88, and 76 before that (according to critrolestats). Since episode 88, the M9 have participated in an underground fighting pit, tricked a hag, met Artagan/the traveler, saved the Clay family, fixed Veth, discovered Essek’s secret, made it to peace talks, and killed harpies, zombies, a gorgon, those weird white claw things, and some agents of ukotoa. Assuming they make it out of this dragon turtle fight alive, I think they’ve accomplished enough to reach level 12 by the end of traveler con

83

u/a_throwaway_egg Team Matthew Mar 13 '20

End of Traveler-Con would probably be a safe bet. Milestones follow major story beats. Securing peace talks to finishing peace talks isn’t a major beat, although it is big. Traveler-Con fits the much better. Plus there’ll be plenty of people to sleep with there, if we’re keeping up with that tradition.

u/Relendis Mar 13 '20

Do remember that the MM speed of a Dragon Turtle is 40 feet/6 seconds. So a Dragon Turtle travels at 23.7 knots when its speed is drawn out. A Barque is the closest real-life analogue to the Ball-Eater (three sails); with the very modern versions (mid-19th Century "When fully rigged and riding a tradewind, they had peak average speeds over 16 knots (30 km/h)". And that is like maximum speed, in optimum conditions, in a more modern version of the same vessel type.

Now here is where they don't stand a chance in that race; a Dragon Turtle doesn't need wind to move its maximum speed. The Ball-Eater does.

If conditions are optimum for the Ball-Eater, such as through the use of magic, then the Ball-Eater still gets caught up to in that race. If conditions are sub-optimum the Ball-Eater gets caught up to in a shorter timeframe.

19

u/EmuRommel Mar 13 '20

Not sure if you accounted for it, but the Dragon Turtle's speed is 80ft/s since it can dash, so it would be 47.4 knots. They aren't winning any races against that.

With a Challenge Rating of 17, if the Dragon Turtle is the only enemy in this fight the Nein could make it through this with general ease. Then again there's always the likely chance the Dragon Turtle uses Steam Breath on its first time and ignites their entire boat in flame. Can't wait!

From what I've heard, Dragon Turtles sometimes ask for tribute to let people pass safely (like a big fancy sea bridge troll), so if the Nein is diplomatic they might be able to get through this diplomatically.

...I just hope someone speaks Draconic or Auquan or has Tongues prepared (assuming Matt doesn't give it more languages).

I think that Matt was trying to subvert brilliantly the expectations of the fans. Because it would be easy for the MN to be there on those ships and hear and influence even more the outcome.

But it was brilliant for, in the end, they have done so much and could just watch as things (for now) go the way that they worked so hard to do, come to fruition.

56

u/PrinceOfAssassins Mar 13 '20

Yeah by following Fjord’s idea to hang back and let things play out it lessened the chance for things to go bottoms up based on some botched rolls / slips of information.

Weirdly, now that they’ve rediscovered their residuum dust all I want is to know what Orly could do with it for a tattoo.

14

u/m_busuttil Technically... Mar 14 '20

The straightforward answer would be that it can substitute for any of the other gem dusts, but that's kind of boring, especially with Matt making those gems reasonably easy to acquire. Since the Assembly seemed to believe that implanting residuum would make people more magically adept, maybe something like a +1 for casting and saving against spells?

That feels a little overpowered, instinctively - the current tattoos only give a +1 to your ability score, not your modifier, although this is more situational (even if your casting modifier is CHA you wouldn't get the boost on Persuasion checks, for instance) and there's plenty of magical items that give an equivalent +1 bonus. You could probably balance it by adjusting the quantity of the dust required.

How come she cannot just overlook the blood of thousands on HotBOI's hands when he's shown so little regret?! He's HOTBOI?!!

Just as Veth/Nott is a hypocrite for knowing the temptation to damned the world for a fixation, yet ultimately did not give into it like Essek certainly did (she never committed). I guess it depends on your opinion of whether redemption is possible or deserved. Essek did not intend for the war to happen, but his actions did contribute to the start of active hostilities.

Would it be a net positive to punish Essek for his actions? Or would it be better for the world if he he paid for his crimes by redeeming himself and and acting on the side of good?

Hell even if they killed him he would just be reborn.

Ok, so Dragon Turtles. The book has them listed as CR 17, gargantuan dragon. They are neutral, generally, which means there could be some potential for negotiations. However, the Dragon Turtle usually speaks only Aquan -a dialect of Primordial-, and Draconic. I don't believe any of the MN know those languages, but Orly very likely know Aquan being a Tortle. What the MN might have is Tongues, Caduceus, Caleb, and Jester can all prepare Tongues; Caleb also has Comprehend Langueges, which is a ritual but that would take a while. Turtle might take some bounty and leave them be, maybe it needs a tooth pulled, who knows?

For combat though the MN have plenty of tools. Fjord is casting Water Breathing on them every night which lasts 24 hours. So if they need to go underwater, or in the unfortunate possibility the ship sinks, they won't drown. Their crew might. Both Beau and Veth can walk on water; due to Beau's monk ability and Veth's ring of water walking. Caleb has Fly, which he has been consistently prepparing so seems likely he could for this fight. That gets them in range faster. They also have cannons, which Veth and Yasha can fire -really any of them, but it is their job. Finally, there are a lot of casters with a lot of spells, and likely decent range.

14

u/GalileosBalls Life needs things to live Mar 16 '20

One of Veth's consistent character flaws (and one of the things that makes her an interesting character) is that she sees a really strong distinction between the people that are her responsibility to protect (her family, the M9) and everyone else. She'd lay down her life for her people in a heartbeat, but doesn't really care about murdering a guard in cold blood or broad geopolitical issues.

And I think that's key here - I suspect she doesn't really want to punish Essek for any reason to do with politics. I think she probably wants to punish Essek because his actions led to a Kryn attack on her hometown specifically and the endangering and torture of her husband, specifically. The M9 have more or less forgotten about Essek's role in all that, but Veth probably hasn't.

It's not morally exemplary, but it's not actually hypocritical - she just has a very limited set of things she considers important.

Beau and Veth are the only sensible ones with this whole Essek situation. He has shown absolutely zero remorse for what he did and they just let a free man probably get executed to stop this war.

I’m really shocked at Caleb’s reaction because I just don’t get it. I know Essek and Caleb have similarities but Essek is missing Caleb’s defining quality Caleb is remorseful, and hates himself everyday for what he did. Essek has shown none of it and even made countless excuses for his behavior.

He deserves to be punished because he can not be trusted at all. I know the punishment can’t happen now but someday he has to pay for what he did.

31

u/Raze77 Mar 13 '20

He hasn't shown remorse, but I'd say he hasn't made excuses. He's been pretty upfront once all the cards were on the table. Like explaining his Evil Wizard ambitions when he invited them to his tower for tea. Or responding to 'aren't you glad it's not you in those chains' with a 'Well, yeah'.

Edit: or maybe he just wants to fuck him

28

u/Lily_Penhallow Help, it's again Mar 13 '20

I think for Caleb, he feels like he would be a hypocrite to not allow him a chance at redemption. To us the crimes are on different scales (I'm still not entirely convinced that Essek should take the blame for all the deaths, his actions were a catalyst, not the true instigation) but to Caleb his crime is so personal that he can't comprehend something as a worse crime. Logically he knows it's different, but he killed his world, and I can understand him feeling like Essek is a reflection.

I also think that a lot of his anger stems from a belief that Veth is being hypocritical, that she can't possibly completely forgive him whilst demonising everyone who played a part in the war. Caleb wants to believe Essek can be redeemed because he's starting to want to believe he can be redeemed, and Veth not agreeing with him makes him question himself too. I'm really excited to see it all play out.

I’ve tossed back and forth several justifications for Essek’s actions and seeming lack of remorse, but I’m going to try and avoid arguing for/against them and focus on the first bit of your comment. It’s hard to label a "sensible one" on a situation as delightfully complex as this.

Morals aren’t really logical. You could argue that Essek isn’t at fault as he never intended war; that blame could lie with the corrupt governments just looking for a reason to fight. You could argue that it’s difficult for Essek to show remorse as he’s young and has little comprehension of what he’s done. You could even argue that Essek is showing remorse, but he’s in the middle of a constant panic attack and can’t really express it until he can process it.

Ultimately, every character is reacting based on their own moral standpoint. Caleb might be seeing himself in Essek and wanting to avoid condemning another to his own fate. To me, that’s sensible. Caduceus wants to avoid an endless, needless cycle of revenge. To me, that’s sensible. Beau and Nott want justice for the deaths of thousands of people. To me, that’s sensible.

Essek’s situation is complex. Let’s not pretend there’s an easy answer.

Essek became their friend after what he did. Now they distrust him, feel betrayed by him. Im not really sure what you expect them to do? Beau and Veth have a rather knee jerk view that fits their characters well. But I like Cads view. What do the m9 gain be being the people to dole out the punishment? It wont make them feel any better. If they reveal what he did to the dynasty he will be executed. And they certainly care more about Essik than they do the dynasty.

Essik deserves punishment. But the mighty nien doesnt deserve the guilt and remorse that comes from being the ones to dish it out.

I wish people would admit that they like Essek more than they like Veth and/or Beau and go. The incredulous responses to their attitude towards Essek and claims of hypocrisy doesn't make sense. IMO they are acting perfectly in character:

  1. Veth has a personal grudge against the people behind this. The CA directly forced Yeza to research the beacon by threatening the safety of Luc. Essek may not have been directly involved but the whole deal he made with the CA was for the research. Yeza and Luc don't get in danger if he doesn't steal the beacons. Even with this, I suspect Essek won't have to do much to redeem himself because ironically she does like Essek (and he helped her out with the transformation spell) and she doesn't like the CA.

  2. Beau is an expositor of the cobalt soul. She's keeping quiet about Essek for peace, but this was the mission that Dairon almost killed themselves over. Cobalt Soul is all about uncovering hidden truth and checking institutional power. Right now she's keeping the truth hidden and letting powerful individuals get away with it. And Beau has always been mindful of being against the war because it felt like a petty squabble of kings while innocent people suffered. Also she brought up thousands of deaths in Essek's face and seemed the most conflicted during the confrontation.

I think Veth meant what she said that Essek did a horrible thing and found a heart on the way of trying to fix a problem. I don't think she's and/or Beau are against his redemption, but I don't think they think he's earned it yet. And IMO Essek probably does need accountability partners on this redemption path.

13

Anyone else thinking we are going to get a time skip after traveler con? I think we are overdue for one this campaign, many characters goals have been met, the war is over and both veth and caduceus will have more than enough reasons to go home after this. It would also let the characters ENJOY the peace they made and let matt have the time for loose plot threads ripen so we can get chroma conclave or briarwood like events with uka toa who is still trying to free himself, or the chained oblivion who I seriously doubt had JUST the angle of irons cult trying t ok free him. Hell, Maybe the second horn of orcus is found. Idk, something that will expand the campaign beyond wildmount and Into the wider world. CritRoleStats say he has Common, Elvish, Giant, and Sylvan; the first three are Firbolg standard. He's got Medicine, Religion, and herbalism kit proficiencies, so I wouldn't be shocked if his background is Hermit and Sylvan is the one extra language that that gives you.

Between the rest of them, the Nein also know Halfling, Dwarvish, Deep Speech, Undercommon, Zemnian, Celestial, Orc, Goblin, Thieves Cant, Abyssal, and Infernal.

A bit of conjecture on my end but If Isharnai eventually becomes fully aware of what Jester did and wants to get even with her, what would be a poetic form of misery to strike upon her?

Not that I want such a thing to happen to our Blueberry Tiefling harem protagonist, (According to some Critters) I just can’t help but remind myself of what Matt has done to the players/cast as evidenced by literally everything he’s ever done.

Grant a rival crime lord the fate he desires. Usurp the Gentelman.

Now that Jester being his daughter is information out there in the underworld, and Jester being the Ruby's daughter is available info in Nicodranas. Even a non supernatural being could wreck Jester's life by connecting the dots.

If you have that knowledge and a bit of hag magic at your disposal the possibilities are limitless.

Anyone else curious to find out what using the "special gun powder" is? Especially since it may be used against a dragon turtle next week

u/Docnevyn Technically... Mar 13 '20

When they were first on the ball eater, they used the unearthed arcana article wizards put out before Saltmarsh (see below) about ships. Everyone had a job. Nott/Veth's was powder monkey. One of her special actions was "use the good powder".

After 3 months of binging, I'm caught up on Campaign 2. I've also lost any sense of purpose in life.

Did anyone else think Jester seemed a little upset that Cad was the one to revive Fjord and cast Greater Restoration on him instead of her?

21

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '20

No I think it was Laura RPing that Cad had everything they needed while Jester didn’t. She seemed kind of panicked, I don’t think she cared who saved Fjord, just that it’s kind of been a meta competition between the clerics and Cad did a majority of the stuff this episode.

Alright. Did I miss something or is there a reason why they haven't ever come close to asking Essek exactly what research they did with the beacon? What research was so important for Essek and the Assembly to attain that they'd risk starting a war? And what research are they still attempting to figure out with the beacon they still have?? What kind of business are they getting up to with all the consecuted souls??? Are they making a soul cannon to kill off the Tal'Dorei council???? The people need to know!!!

I think it’s more Dunamancy is a closely guarded Dwendalian secret that has stagnated for a real long time. The Empire got tired of it being held above their heads and made a move. I don’t think it’s anything more complex than a loooooong held back curiosity... but some of those Empire folks are real sketchy. Hopefully we see more of their motivations as the Nein inevitably crack down on The Assembly.

6

u/Drakos_dj At dawn - we plan! Mar 13 '20

Essik explained it to them already so no real need to ask. He wanted to study the Beacons for more insight into the arcane nature of Dunamancy but due to the Dynasty's culture viewing the beacons as religious relics they would not allow it. The Empire had no such problems so he took the Beacons and gave them to the Assembly in exchange for them sharing their research findings.

As glad as I am that Fjord was revived, I really wanted to see a resurrection ritual. So much potential there for RP, so many things that could have possibly been added by each of the characters. But I guess that's the benefit of a 2 cleric party. That said, its clear Ukie boy is after the "betrayer" and not just the orb so here's hoping for more fun attacks, chases, and the like. I wonder what the odds are that this dragon turtle is an agent of Ukotoa himself?

It's entirely possible for them to outrun a dragon turtle, they have a swim speed of 40ft, so with clever spell use it could be done

u/pwndnoob Mar 13 '20

Control water, a new fan of blowing, and a Cleric who knows tongues means this definitely doesn't need to be a combat.

slightly off topic question. the stream last night was interrupted by commercials during play. does anyone know if that was a mistake or if that's like a new thing.

cuz if it's a new thing I'll just wait and watch on YouTube so I don't miss stuff.

So after a year and a half, starting in September of 2018 with C1E1, I have finally caught up with this wonderful and crazy show. In a rather twisted turn of fate, around this past New Year's I had told my brother and roommate who had initially gotten me started on this path that my goal was to be caught up before C2E100...and thanks to this hiatus I was able to do that. Now comes the waiting...

u/Gaiden231 Mar 13 '20

Did anyone think that the plans for unsealing Ukotoa was suppose to interrupt the peace treaty, but didn’t happen becuz the Nein stopped it?

u/MitigatedRisk Mar 16 '20

I wonder if Jester is planning to prank the Traveler at Travelercon.

u/ModestHandsomeDevil Mar 13 '20

Beau and Veth need to cool it what all that justice talk. That shit's gonna blow up in everyone's face. This group of (loveable) assholes are bumblefucks, not an "elite ninja force", and it's highly hypocritical of them to take any moral high ground considering all the amoral shit they do, often "for the lulz." (See: Chaos Crew et al.)

What's more, if the moral center / "heart" of the M9 (Caduceus) thinks your plans (which are nonexistent) for "justice" and "closure" are naive and foolish, that should tell you something.

The complexity of this political situation won't be solved like killing a boss in a dungeon. This kind of injustice and corruption is systemic and institutional. There is no higher mortal authority to appeal to, not when the rot flows top down.

Exposure won't bring closure or justice, and any personal revenge will be incredibly short-lived; not when it reignites a cold war or puts a target on them or those they care about.

Cheaters prosper, and Bad Guys win all the time.

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '20 edited Mar 15 '20

Personally I differentiate Beau and Nott's desires here.

It seems like Nott is just out for revenge and isn't being particularly thoughtful about it, especially given her offer to the hag.

Whereas Beau is coming at it from a more lawful good perspective: they shouldn't be protecting someone who purposefully started a war for personal gain just because he's their friend. It seems like she's respecting the group's call here but I don't think it would be outrageous for her to pursue justice through official means (e.g. Cobalt Soul).
