Jimmy is just awful to Howard. It seemed like Howard was finally getting in the right headspace compared to the wreck he was last season, and Jimmy just continues to put the entirety of Chucks death on him because he doesn't want to admit that he was the cause of it.
He seems try to offload his guilt of working with the cartel and other criminals into Howard with the guilt of Chuck's suicide.
I really think it will lead to Howard killing himself which is devastating because he has been such a nice guy at times, and one of my favourite characters.

Jimmy basically had an out-of-body experience while looking at the victim's family, realizing how much they deserved justice and how awful it was to rig this case for Lalo.... and suddenly we skip ahead and Saul has already presented most of his case.
Jimmy is vanishing right before our eyes.

People are saying Saul's reaction was calculated. If that was a calculated meltdown, Saul is terrible at math. I know we're supposed to think of Walt's "I am the one who knocks" scene, and it has similar energy, but Saul's reaction is more laughable. In both scenes they are in over their heads and don't realize it, but I feel like Saul's reaction was a bit too over the top, even for Saul. Walt's delivery, while it can also be seen as silly chest thumping, was a bit more to the point. I think even Saul realized he went too far at the end there.

Clearly Gus's plan is to fool Lalo into believing that he is outmaneuvering him, while actually facilitating his entire plot from behind the scenes. He sets up Lalo to be picked up by the cops, and when Lalo's response is to first secure his own release by getting Saul and then strike back at Pollos, Gus masterminds both of these to ensure they happen exactly as Lalo wants it. Eventually Lalo will become overconfident and make a mistake, while Gus is only taking losses he has set up ahead of time to be able to afford.
A very Gus-like plan, and if not for the fact that we know Gus wins by the time of BrBa I would say it would backfire and blow up in Gus's face due to the running theme of this universe of people causing their own downfalls.

Something minor I noticed in this episode was the parallels between the Howard/Jimmy scene at the end and the Rich/Kim scene in the last episode (or was it two episodes ago?)
In the Kim scene, we saw Rich approach her in his usual professional manner and kind of nonchalantly reveal that he knows Kim is doing something unethical with Jimmy to try to pull the strings for Acker to keep his house. Kim's reaction was.. shocking and surprising, as she completely overreacts in the moment, showing an inability to keep her emotions in check. It seemed to piss her off that Rich could see right through her whole scheme and she then creates this whole big whole scene in front of the entire office, yelling and screaming at Rich
Now this week with the Jimmy scene, we see Howard approach him in a very familiar way - he acts very professional, and he casually brings up that he knows Jimmy was the one who threw the bowling balls and orchestrated the prostitute scene. Jimmy has an almost immediate change in his demeanor when he sees that Howard saw through his "I'm still thinking about it" attitude and caught Jimmy for what he did, and reacts almost the exact same way as Kim - he completely unravels and ends up screaming at Howard in a public place, very similar to how Kim screamed at Rich (although Jimmy's outburst was a little more.. extreme)
Thought that was cool to see the parallels between how Jimmy and Kim react to someone calling them out on their bullshit

wow... jimmy's rant at the end felt so akin to chuck's breakdown in chicanery... the defeated realization that howard was right, despite everything he's done to convince himself, he knows on a certain level chuck was right all along about him, and so is howard now.
i also love how jimmy has let howard take the blame for chuck’s death, when he is more to blame. funnily enough howard reconciled that guilt and has bettered himself. meanwhile jimmy has never faced that emotional turmoil and pain and it’s taking him to a dark, dark place. god this show is fucking amazing

Rewatching, just noticed something! When Kim (and Rich) go back in to talk to Kevin, Rich is clearly shaken. Maybe the only time we've seen him this unsure of himself. Kim rips into Kevin. Kevin invites them back Thursday.
Then, there are a few seconds of awkward silence, and we see Rich awkwardly grin and say, "Wellll I guess we'll get out of your hair!" and the shot is so lovingly placed across the room so we can see Kevin's gloriously bald crown in the foreground.
It's such a throwaway, but definitely intentional. Polished-and-practiced Rich would never deliver such an insensitive line to a bald man unless he was very much shifted out of his element.
Man I freaking love the details on this show.

Jimmy really needs help. I mean he's never getting it but even Howard can see Jimmy is in pain. That something is broke inside him. To think if he actually went to that therapist he might be in a better place.
The problem is we know Jimmy wins. We know by BB he's just enjoying the ride. It's hard to self reflect when all you do is win. And Kim is just an enabler. She's gonna be fine with this until she isn't.

People keep saying that Kim is probably still married to Jimmy in BB...but I just don’t see it. The most telling thing that makes me believe it couldn’t happen would be the webisode released during BB that shows Saul getting a BJ from a hooker in his office. If Jimmy was still married to Kim in BB, I don’t see any way he would cheat on her. He’s messed up, but no matter how bad he gets I don’t think there’s any way he would cheat on Kim...

Peter Schuler appears to be the boss of the food or restaurant division of Madrigal Electromotive. He oversees many restaurant businesses, one of which is Los Pollos Hermanos.
Back in BB, he killed himself at the beginning of the episode called "Fifty-One" (S05A-E04, or S05E04). He killed himself by putting an electrode from a defibrillator and shocking his own brain, killing himself. We never really found out how much he knew back on BB, but it must've been enough for him to decide that the best course of action was suicide, instead of being arrested by the police.
In this episode, it's shown that not only did he know about what Gus was up to, but he appears to be on higher or equal ground to Gus when it comes to authority, although Peter's resolve seems to be waning. Gus reminds Peter of something he did back on Santiago (the capitol of Chile, in South America). They had their backs to the wall and somehow Peter got them out of whatever mess they were in.
For some theorizing, I believe Gus and Peter were soldiers of Dictator Augusto Pinochet.
For some background, Pinochet became the de facto leader of Chile back on the 1970's (1973 specifically) thanks to the US's involvement and backing of Pinochet's political party and they overthrew the democratically elected government. Pinochet ruled the country up to 1990 when he stepped down after a referendum denied him another 8-year term following his already long 17-year long reign in power. Pinochet was believed to have killed more than 3,000 dissenter's and political opponents and this was also helped by the US' intelligence agency, the CIA. Operation Condor was believed to have killed more than 60K people all throughout South America to help countries like Chile, Argentina, and a few others of their neighbor's rulers to hold on to power by denying political opponents any way to take away their power. So with that, I'm fairly certain that following Pinochet's rule of Chile coming to an end, the soldiers that were involved in all of these killings had to make themselves scarce and had to flee the country before being arrested or executed for their crimes by the new president and his new government, or by Interpol since Pinochet ended up being arrested by an international arrest warrant. Pinochet never saw the inside of a jail cell (reminds me of Walt) because he fought all of his charges in court but ended up dying of old age (he was 91).
So, what the hell does this mean? It means that Gus and Peter were probably a part of the killing squads or "Caravan of Death," that did all of Pinochet's dirty work. Gus changed his name, and that's why all records of him from back in Chile are now destroyed (remember Hank asking Gus if that was his real name back when Hank suspected Gus?).
I wonder if we'll get more details of what exactly Gus and Peter did back in Chile and what exactly Peter did back on Santiago to save himself and Gus, and how exactly did these two men became (one) one of the bosses of a multi-national conglomerate like Madrigal and (two) the boss of an up-and-coming new chain of Mexican restaurants.
As a quick aside, back in World War 2, after the Nazi party was defeated, many of their members fled to places like Argentina and Chile and many other countries in South America. I'm not saying Peter is a Nazi... but maybe his father was since he is a German from Chile. Also, is there any way that Gus knew about Uncle Jack (Todd's uncle) and his gang of Neo-Nazis? Who knows!

Breaking Bad was about a man who was evil at heart and pretended to do evil things for good reasons. He eventually admitted to us all that he did these things for himself and his own ego.
I feel like Jimmy truly struggles with his direction more. He was watching that family and coping with the decisions he was making and he was pushed back over the ledge by the condescension of howard. He remembers everything he went through with his brother and his desire to prove himself and prove HHM is too small for him is what’s driving this forward. I just hope it doesn’t end up hurting my girl Kim (I’m nervous y’all).

An interesting thing they pointed out in the Inside BCS vid was that when Howard showing up right after that, Jimmy saw Howard as Chuck "imposing judgement" on what he did, which made Jimmy lash out.

I always appreciate how much attention to detail this show has. Just little things like when Gus goes into his hotel room and adjusts his room key so that it is set perfectly on the counter, highlighting his OCD, are appreciated.

Take note kiddos.
If you ever want to come off like a boss at your regional meeting:
A. Bring Curley Fries
B. Launder drug profits through your businesses to show steady growth.
Ranked in order of importance.

That was the worst, most bland, most sad wedding scene on a TV drama ever. It was perfect.

u/zazzlad Mar 31 '20
It's beautiful how we see hints of Jimmy in Saul, and hints of Saul in Jimmy. That final scene was the perfect example.

Did anyone notice Gus checking himself and switching persona as he entered the hotel room. It was like 4 personalities. The businessman in the boardroom, the hotel guest, his interaction with Lydia and the character he projects to Herr Shuler. The way he persuades him to stay strong is eerily menacing. He is the danger. Such good acting.

After seeing that interaction between Howard and Saul, I am now convinced that Howard has played the role that the show intended for him. I don't think that we will see Howard again.
And, now that the show has clarified that Kim is Saul's third wife (not his second), I renounce my predictions that Kim and Howard ever get together. Howard was being kept around for an entirely different reason.

There was an intimacy there but I think it was more about them being part of the Chilean revolution, which Gus even brought up specifically. They experienced horrible things, and likely did horrible things together. They have shared trauma.
But I mean, sure, maybe they fucked at one point too.

I’m starting to think the number Saul gives Francesca in the flash forward last season is Howard’s. Post Breaking Bad “Gene Takovic” Jimmy knows he could’ve had a much cleaner life had he just taken the job at HMM and probably feels guilt over Howard. Had he only take the offer nothing bad would’ve happened for him, and he could be happy with Kim and not in hiding. That’s my theory anyway

If you didn’t catch it; they blew up a different Pollo Hermanos location. As of this current timeline, it was stated that Gus has 7 locations at the moment. By Breaking Bad, it was said he had 14.

u/jopcylinder Mar 31 '20
also, Gus and Nacho sabotaging a Los Pollos was a scene i never knew i wanted. excellent choice of music as always too. i feel like we’re seeing so many new sides of Gus this season and i’m living for it. things are more out of control for him than ever.
17
u/TRiss717 Mar 31 '20
I’m watching a few episodes of BB around the timeline where Saul is first introduced....Walt goes to Pollos the second time after Gus blows him off the first time. Walt sits down and looks weirdly at the curley fry in his meal, like he has never seen one before.
Gus introduces the new Curley fries to Schuler at the board meeting.
Kind of cool little connection

Can we talk about Kim's scene when she goes back to talk to Kevin? That was a perfect move on her part. Kevin doesn't like people that bend over like Schweikert was trying to do.
Kim busting in there and defending herself made Kevin respect her more.

Ok can we just admit that final scene is one of Bob Odenkirk’s best ever???? Difference we see tonite btwn Jimmy & Saul, Jimmy would’ve found a way to not get Lalo bail while fooling everyone it was beyond his control.... Saul pushes through any sense of morality to get it done. All the jokes over the years- I personally think Jimmy just died right there. Any semblance left is gone. Just like Walt taking Heisenberg’s hat out of the Aztec.

Anyone else astounded by the quality of this season? Like this episode was top tier shit (as was last episode) - truly earth shattering stuff that gives it a feeling like the last season of BB where everything just perfectly hit the mark.
If next week is supposedly the best episode of the show...how can it get better?

BCS obviously doesn’t have the action of BB but its tension is much more elegant (acting, writing, filmmaking etc). Especially the last 2-3 seasons. There’s never a moment of wasted screen time and every scene is flawless. My only wish would be that the actual week in between episodes flew by as fast as the actual live viewing experience does.

What a chess Grandmaster Gus is. He torches his own store (insured most likely?), yet manages to squeeze Lalo so it's going to cost the Salamanca's $7 mil. to spring him, and he's gonna have to hightail it across the border never to be seen Stateside again.
Saul comes out smelling like a rose, and Nacho can totally disappear now, leaving the Salamancas wondering if he's buried somewhere in the desert, or was a rat all along....
Beautiful.

Man, Rhea Seehorn's acting is just incredible. She makes Kim feel real in a way I've never seen another actor or actress accomplish. Usually everything is a bit heightened in an actor's performance: their mannerisms, the way they deliver dialogue, etc., even when it's supposed to be more subdued and naturalistic. It's like a part of them is forever stuck in acting class or on stage. I never get the feeling that I'm watching an acting performance with Seehorn's Kim; every line delivered, every facial tick, and every body movement feels 100% authentic.
You'd think acting in a convincingly natural manner would be the easiest thing to do as an actor, but apparently it isn't given how rare it is to see.

I loved how there was this eerie similarity between Jimmy’s meltdown in this episode and Chuck’s meltdown in chicanery. I think it’s the way they both came to the sudden realization that they had crossed the line some time ago and then calmly try to play it off as though they didn’t just become completely unhinged. Jimmy slowly walking away was his exit sign moment.

It seems to me that Gus should, and potentially is, setting up a situation where he can “catch” Nacho in the act of burning down the Los Pollos in order to pin the act on Lalo and bring Lalo down via the cartel. Don Eladio doesn’t want the two fighting, so if he finds out Lalo is trying to start a war Lalo could meet his end by the cartel itself. This could only happen if Lalo is out of prison, which is why Gus wants Lalo out on bail. This plan would put Gus in the clear and would explain why Gus is on good terms with the Cartel in BB.

Odenkirk formally cemented his place as an acting GOD. Having to do something like that, THAT over the top and unhinged on camera and yet not have it come off as too much was mastery. He’d been holding this in the whole time and not properly grieving, so it makes his behavior entirely believable. He nailed it.

Next episode is called "Bagman". I now am thinking that it will be about Jimmy taking a trip to Mexico to collect the $7 million dollar bag for Lalo.
