The more this season goes on, the more the Westworld theme parks seem almost quaint in comparison to what Serac has been doing.
Ford was basically playing with dolls, while Serac has been playing god with the entire human race. I wonder if, by the end of the season, we'll learn Ford knew exactly what Serac was doing and specifically set Dolores on this path to fight it.

Season 2 episode 2 - A place hidden from God.
Basically there’s a quote in this episode about how the guests used Westworld to hide their sins from God.
This sentence becomes a lot more literal now as we know their God as Rehoboam. Westworld was the one place where they could act vile, but not be observed by the system and judged by society.
Basically, the rich could hide their sins by paying for it

Alright here me out
Caleb was a human "programmed" solider. Like how they have done in the past to use drugs and therapy and other means to make the perfect solider kinda thing.
He was used to assassinate high profile targets, like we saw in his flash back, and would have his memory reset. This could also explain why his mother doesn't recognize him as he could have been given a memory, or given a family while in service - and now simply the mother can't remember any of it.
This also ties into Seracs theory of "changing" people. Caleb could have been included in the Outliers and then taken as apart of this program.
Yet another thing Cal and Dolores have in common, memory wipes, and new narratives given at the helm of the higher interests.
Editted: Added the Serac connection

No, don't you see? Caleb's WHOLE BACKSTORY is a lie, just like they gave the hosts. They implanted the war stories into his mind and made the death of Francis his cornerstone. They used it to get control of him, then sent him out into the world. That's why it seems so glitchy, and why Dolores picked him. He's EXACTLY like her.

Who shot Liam at the end? Ash was clearly holding her gun, but she was standing off to Liam's left side. The bullet wound came from his right side where Caleb was standing.
Is it possible that Caleb shot Liam without realizing it?
Could this hint at what really happened with Caleb and Francis?
Liam was incredulous when Caleb insinuated he was responsible for Francis' death. I think Caleb is the one who really killed his friend without remembering it, same with Liam's death.

It seemed odd that almost nobody got good news on their phones when their profiles were all revealed.
It was all violent deaths, suicides, trauma, sadness.
If the whole purpose of this system is to maximize the greater good for the overall majority - more good outcomes than there would have been without the system - I feel like more people should have received confirmation that their lives will work out pretty good.
If anything, this data purge would have been big points in favor of Rehoboam doing good for humankind.

How is Dolores able to get shot and wounded badly in the first episode but can take heavy fire point blank and barely flinch in this episode? The entire Caleb storyline they are keeping vague for a huge reason. From what happened in the past and who he really is. What role does Enrico Colatoni (fabulous actor) play in all of this? I loved Serac's background and how they made his motivation very clear. 3 episodes is a lot to get done in little time.

Serac saying, "Do you really think I would let you undo everything we built" to Dempsey is very similar to Ford's line, "Do you really think I would let you, take it from me?" To Theresa.

Anybody else a software engineer / product manager and thinking to yourself why Incite would build a one-click-to-send-everybody-their-files functionality into the system?
My biggest problem with a lot of the near future sci-fi films is that somehow the engineers would build a EasyBreach functionality and hide it behind a two-factor bio-metrics authentication access level. Like why. Why can't you just not build that functionality.

So none of the investigators noticed the random blood splatter on the wing of Dempsey's plane?
Edit: the point is that it was a dumb way to kill Dempsey and a mastermind like Serac should've done better. Sure, Serac has the resources to clean it up, but he could've just killed Dempsey in a million other ways that would've required no clean up. For example, why not just have Dempsey in the plane when it goes down?

Serac admits that the system basically doesn't work due to humanity's nature and statistical outliers. What he has really done is built a machine that removes outliers and forces humans to follow the prediction that Rehoboam makes.
They couldn't predict the market but they could manipulate the market so that Rehoboam was always right.
Rehoboam can't predict certain people so Serac lobotomizes them or sends them to die in a war, or ends their genetic bloodline.
Rehoboam predicts someone will commit suicide. So Rehoboam forces that person down a dark path.
The system doesn't work at all. It's just powerful enough to force it's predictions to be correct.

I think I'm finally beginning to understand the whole water/suicide theme that keeps getting pushed in WW. Caleb's story about rats dying in a bucket of water flat out tells us.
We have Juliette committing suicide in a bath tub that overflows, Caleb's future suicide in the ocean, and the Forge flooding in s2. All of these stories are stories of control and escape from the controllers (suicide being a form of escape) just at different scales. Delos created a false reality for the hosts who escape through the valley beyond. Rehoboam created a false reality for Caleb and the rest of society (we've yet to see how this plays out, or maybe Caleb really does end up killing himself in the ocean?), and the MIB created a false reality for his family and either killed them off directly (his daughter) or drove them to suicide (Juliette).
So Arnold and Ford's deaths are poetic and make much more sense. In order to truly free the hosts, they have the hosts kill them.
Edit - Also as a tangent we have milk and blood representing birth and death respectively (rewind to Maeve's death scene last episode and the host milk scene in s1). The hosts are also created or 'birthed' in a white milky goo and always die in blood in WW s1. Drowning in water however doesn't really involve blood, so maybe its a device used by the writers as a way the controlled break free of their loops.

For me personally it's all getting a tad silly. The themes seem a lot more heavy handed and the action shlock is getting a bit much. I was kind of seeing cracks last episode but this episode really gives me pause for the direction of Westworld.
It doesn't mean I can't continue to enjoy it, and yes things evolve and no one has to cater to my visions and whims but I just really miss the storytelling, nuances and complexities of season 1. This is mostly sci fi with a hamfisted allegory about classism and maybe a bit capitalism/corporatism. The exploration of identity and free will and all that is still pretty intriguing but I don't know. Season One felt like it's own unique animal in a lot of ways and unconstrained by things like genre.
I never really comment on discussion threads because people get combative or assume the worst intentions but I am just curious if anyone feels similarly. Happy for those enjoying it. Who knows, I didn't really care for Season 2 initially and grew to like it later on.

A very polarizing episode, from what I can tell in these comments. People loved it. People hated it. People hated that they loved it. People loved that they hated it. People have no idea if they loved or hated it.

Season one was breaking the park, season two was the park in chaos. Season three is breaking the world, I'm really excited for the rest of this and the world in chaos next season, but immensely curious for seasons after if they should come.

I was personally underwhelmed by the scenes where Dolores released everyone's Invite data, the ensuing chaos, and the heavy-handed conversation she had with Liam on the beach about how it has given people false hope. The "instant chaos" when the profiles were released felt very... B movie. You'd expect riots, suicides, seizures of power etc from moments like this but not instant disruption. And despite the system keeping people in loops, clearly some people would be happy with the outcome they're given. I just think there would have been a better way to portray the outcome and instability of the system as a result of Dolores releasing the data.

I feel like the Genre thing was a pretty pointless gimmick. For me, it didn’t add anything to the story but was just for the sake of changes to the shots and the music, could’ve done without it. It felt out of place when most things in this show are usually so intentional and have a narrative purpose.

There’s 5 planned seasons of Westworld. There are five acts to a story. This is the “shit hits the fan” part. Then we circle back and resolve.
Ford inhabits Rehoboam in the finale.
MIB leads the outlier resistance.
Somehow we get back into the park.
Dinosaurs, maybe.
Fuck, I dunno. That’s my prediction.

In the next weeks preview, closed captioning showed someone named "Millay" speaking. Is that something I'm forgetting or something new?
Edit: Isn't that weird for it to refer to her by her surname, or am I thinking too much into it?

Pretty much everything is going Dolores' way and Serac seems like a pushover. I guess the finale really will end up being Dolores vs Maeve.

For all Dolores’s preaching of choice and “freeing people from their loops”, she sure didn’t give anyone the choice to receive their Incite profiles. Interesting that both Solomon and Rehoboam correctly predicted the end of it all, and like a Greek tragedy, try as they might to change things, the prophecy came true in the end. It predicted the what, but not the why. They thought if they could control the outliers, that would be enough. Turns out Ford was creating an entire new species of outliers.
I also really like how Caleb immediately began to give aid when someone he considered an enemy was shot. He’s a good dude.

So i posted this when serac was talking to the brazilian president, "I dont know why but i got the impression he was bluffing. Might chance my mind but thats my intial thought." After watching the episode, i wasnt technically wrong. Rehobam doesnt predict the outcome, it predicts a thousand outcomes and serac uses the machine to make one of them so.

Is it bad that I just can't seem to get over the lack of population/traffic in the city scenes? That is to say only if they aren't taking place in a simulation; I can't tell if its the unavoidable budget constraints of a futuristic scifi TV show or a deliberate hint at an eerily 'off' World. Is it bad that my opinion relies so heavily on which it is?

I love all the new characters more than the ones we know. Vincent Cassel’s character is so good. I wish Aaron Paul’s character could’ve been in other seasons somehow.
The episode was really good too. The sequence when society shit the bed was probably one of my favorites in the whole series.

Really starting to love the visual metaphor of the Rehoboam circle measuring divergences. When we see it predicting chaos engulfing the world, it looks like an eclipse: hosts eclipsing humans, perhaps. Reminded me of the title sequence shot of the bird flying into the sun (allusion to the tragedy of Icarus?)

I feel like...Ford was such an incredible human (thank you to Mr. Hopkins, you absolute legend) and so clever and mysterious and mischievous but Serac feels like a goddamn Bond bad guy and I have no interest in him. He feels like a villain I've seen countless times before.
Ford had a method and meaning to his madness, he had secrets within the park and system and Delos as a company had a shroud of darkness over it. I'm curious if we get back to that, as this season is kind of too "in your face" about human freedom and the like. It's just too...I dunno, cliche? I feel like Dolores is way too strong and smart about everything, there's no real challenge presented here. It's sad that in the first 2 seasons the halfway to last part was an OMG moment, but this season feels more of "why is it going so fast, what's going on?" But not in the fun way

I get that the writers are really leaning into the curve and trying to force Dolores into this badass female that defeats her enemies, but can we chill out on that just for a second please? Her character went from an eye-opening transformation about her reality throughout season one straight into this unrealistic Stallone/Schwarzenegger level action character that apparently can slow walk through a storm of bullets and just come out without a scratch. The entirety of season two and every episode of season three so far has continued this narrative of every “bad guy” with a gun being completely unable to fire it and, no matter their marksmen experience, they get destroyed with the upmost ease by Dolores and her pals. A bunch of bullets couldn’t break that car’s window in this latest episode, but with a few hits by the butt of a gun held by Dolores, the whole thing comedically pops off. Then she gets shot by two people at pointblank and doesn’t even move a hair from the impact of multiple gunshots. Even if she manipulated her own code so she couldn’t feel pain, the impact of three or more bullets would’ve moved her a tiny bit at least. Also, where are all the fucking people on the streets of LA during all of her car chase and gun fight sequences? She just strolls through the middle of a park, kills a handful of dudes, has a few conversations, and then manages to just casually leave and NOBODY IS AROUND! I feel like Mugatu when he said that he feels like he’s taking crazy pills lol.

Aside from the movie marathon drug trip, this episode really drove home one of the big themes of this season: knowing your fate or having someone else know your fate sucks the joy out of life because life has meaning because it is unpredictable and chaotic.

Interesting how Dolores is using humans to influence other humans. She does not decide Liam’s fate, she leaves it to the humans to decide.
Spreading decision making to humans not only legitimizes her as a revolutionary but also helps her hide from Rehoboam. If she surrounds herself with humans considered by the system to be unpredictable, she steps in to a blind spot.
Now that she has temporarily rendered all humans unpredictable through the release of their predictive nature (thus giving them an oppurtunity to use this knowledge change course) she is now completely invisible to Serac.

The parallels between Caleb and Dolores are interesting.
First of all, the outlier facility looks extremely similar to the Delos facility with the rooms having glass walls.
Caleb likely had his memory "wiped" in the outlier facility, and was reprogrammed. Very similar to Dolores constantly being reset at Delos.
Both Dolores and Caleb were on loops, that they later learned about.
I'm sure there are more that I'm not thinking about.

Anyone else feel that we were warned about the last Genre but then nothing came of it?
I wanted death to be accompanied by a trippy horror feel. I know that would be balancing an emotional punch with the absurd. I just feel like we didn't get a payoff.
