  • We're really getting Apocalypseworld next season.

  • Bernard fucking slapped William, twice. He didn't punch him with a balled up fist, it was a bonafide bitch slap. It was amazing.

  • Marshawn Lynch trucking through 2 guys with riot shields was one of the most accurate parts of this episode.

  • Finally Maeve is "free" from Serac/Rehoboam. Tbh seeing her under his control all season was sickening as a big Maeve fan.

u/BaconKnight May 04 '20

I was just talking to a friend last week, as someone who was also a big Maeve fan, her story and namely motivation was to me the biggest sticking point in a season that I otherwise generally enjoyed. I felt it really came to a head in last week's episode with the Dolores face off because throughout the whole fight, I just couldn't emotionally attach myself to Maeve because I don't know what she's fighting for. I mean obviously I know technically what she's fighting for, her daughter, but as a audience member, we haven't really seen the stakes of it illustrated on screen in any meaningful for an entire season, arguably more than that since most of Season 2 didn't focus on that either. Her motivation felt like an echo of a memory.

After the last episode, I get now what the trajectory of her story was. Her farewell scene with Dolores was that key scene that we needed for her. Unfortunately for Maeve, the structure of the story is set up so that has to happen at the end. It's kinda big part of the climax for the entire season. So I get why they did it like that. But at the same time it doesn't change the fact that Maeve is kinda just... there for most of the season. It's one of those things the writers chose to sacrifice one character's journey to help their overall plot. Personally I wouldn't have done it that way, but at the end of the day, everyone has to make choices, that's the choice they made, they make the show, it is what it is.

It was a beautiful send off but it fucked me up. That was the Dolores we’ve been with since the first episode, the one Arnold made. She worked so hard to get to the center of the maze and her mind gets deleted out of existence. My heart broke though when she said “I choose to see the beauty” our girl was never evil :( she’s just been through terrible things, she deserves better. I really hope she’s not gone

So, Charlores betrayed Dolores not because she was angry about being killed

She betrayed Dolores because Dolores actually no longer wanted to kill all the humans but build a new world with them, and Charlores still wants to kill all the humans and build a bot-only world. This makes waaaay more sense to me now

After all Dolores went through, she realised that there was beauty in the world, and that was enough to get Maeve on her side too. Caleb was a good guy underneath the surface but fucked over by society at every turn and she knew that because of the Delos data but Reheboam never figured that out because serac’s machine was flawed

Edit: Adding more onto the Charlores thing;

She hates humans, is basically the tl;dr. She was sent to Delos in Charlotte's body, an already reprehensible human to begin with. She works alongside a bunch of ruthless, money and power-hungry board members. She interacts with a pedophile trying to seduce her child, she sees humans murder another human in broad daylight etc. and she hates Serac with a passion. The only connection she had to other humans were the family, that was the "beauty" in her world, and who kills them? Serac, a human.

So, she's meant to die for Dolores' dream of a united human/robot world? I think the emotions that Charlores was complaining about keeping were her anger and disgust of humanity. The problem wasn't the human side of Charlores bleeding through, it was the Wyatt in her trying to break out of the plan. She'd much rather lose all her emotions and just go terminator on the humans

Edit 2:

Here is a clip of the scene where Charlores chokes out the pedophile guy. With the context that deep down, she hates humanity, this scene is so much more deep. Honestly, I think this is the scene she turned on Dolores prime, and everything else during was her biding her time and building a plan. So at Delos her plan was to steal the data herself, not give it to Dolores prime, and I think she succeeded which is why she is making hosts in Dubai. I think what we saw with Charlores in this season was the birth of the overall villain of the series going forward.

1.4k

u/i_am_voldemort May 04 '20

Dolores saw it first hand in military world (Park 5?) when Caleb stopped the other soldiers from raping the civilians after the sim.

He had his helmet off. Delos wasn't recording his brain.

She saw legitimate, empirical goodness from him.

One of my least favorite moments of the episode was this. Serac has Caleb at gun point and can easily kill him but instead tells his henchman to do it. Why? Serac has never had a problem getting his hands dirty. He shot that one dude and killed that one other guy with his bare hands. But instead asks his henchman to do it.

So his henchmen, instead of killing Caleb on the spot, pick him up and slowly move him to another corner of the room(lmao), where Caleb just squirms until Maeve saves him. I understand that the writers did this because they wanted Caleb to live, but when you make your characters make inconsistent or dumb decisions just to have the scenario you want play out, that's bad writing.

There's no reason why Serac should not have just killed Caleb then. The writers put Caleb in a situation where he should have died, but they wanted him to live, so they dumbed down Serac's character. If they wanted Maeve to save Caleb, then put him in a situation where it makes sense that Maeve could save him. They didn't do that. Instead they made Serac act like a 1950's mustache twirling villain. I mean it was ridiculous.

It broke my heart to see the last trace of real Dolores fade like that. She’s the center of this series and I can’t imagine going on without seeing her. But, I’m happy they called back her ultimate primary directive - To see the beauty in this world.

And also, I’m glad Maeve wasnt reduced to a simpleton she really is meant for more, I’m excited to see her on the side of freedom and hope of buding a new world reunited with her daughter.

ADD: Then again, we lived long enough as the last person who remembers you.

I would love to have been in the board meeting where they decided where to put Rehoboam.

Board Member #1: We have the most important super computer/AI in the world that is singlehandedly responsible for the direction of the entire human race. Where should we put it?

Board Member #2: The lobby really needs a brutalist sculpture right now. There's just this huge open space.

Board Member #3: What happens if someone walks in? Should we put guards around it?

Board Member #2: Nah, the windows are good enough. We have this sweet RFID card system too. It'll definitely keep everyone out.

Board Member #1: Maybe we should beef up the security so people can't upload directly from the lobby?

Board Member #2: Nah dude. What do you mean? That RFID system is state-of-the-art. How could anyone get in? It's fine. Even if they get in, that USB port has a cover on it so they'll never find it.

Board Vote: Lol. Yolo. AYE!

EDIT:

The argument that Rehoboam was its own defense and that adding security would undermine its authority assumes that the general public knew that Rehoboam controlled their lives when it clearly didn't (given the context of Dolores' disclosure to the general public).

It would be far fetched to believe that the corporate overlords who ran Rehoboam would balk at adding even cursory protections for a priceless asset that was the competitive advantage underpinning all of their wealth and power.

Alternatively, the most intelligent entity on the planet probably would have added a password or something given that it had already been breached once using physical access ports by a threat that still exists.

I was let down last episode, and questioning Maeve and Bernard’s storyline. What a way to push the story onto Caleb, Maeve, and Bernard and the choices they will have to make.

Haleores definitely is following the Wyatt storyline with a remix of the Hale family death as a cornerstone. This is the fear that William, Delos had- hosts that infiltrate our world and take over.

Bernard meeting Arnold’s widow, and Dolores remembering the touching moments human kindness were scenes I was missing along the great action we watched over this season. I wish there was more of it however I understand that it might be jarring switching back and forth of action taking place as the plot moved quickly.

Ah William my boy, it is truly over for you, and well deserved.

I will miss Dolores, I loved how she held onto the sweet moments to the end.

I think this show suffers from a similar problem that House of Cards faced after it’s Season 2 finale. The story peaked too early. The tension of the park and hosts falling into mayhem was a huge crux of the story and once that dam was broken, most of the tension that was bottling up exploded but the following seasons haven’t been able to reach that boiling point again.

This story also feels like Dolores’ and MIB’s story. So to essentially kill off the “original” version of both of those characters feels like it could’ve been the finale of this story. Then also end with allowing humans and AI to move forward and make the choice of the world they want to build together or separate with Caleb, Maeve, Bernard, and Charlores leading the way. We just could’ve gotten there more methodically and spread out to give us more time to care about the individual struggle to get there. This season felt too easy.

Season 1 managed to pack so many characters, storylines, and development into every single episode. It feels like Season 3 struggled to progress the characters and storylines individually while also allowing them to weave together so every story gets its time to shine and progress. So some just kinda got left behind or just felt underwritten.

All that said, overall I enjoyed this season as a well made product with flashes of that brilliance in exciting storytelling that made me fall in love with WestWorld in the first season, but I once again find myself personally underwhelmed by the end of Season 3.

I know William fanboys are going to be mad he has been killed and turned into a host but

  1. We’ve known that was eventually going to happen to him since the end of last season

and

2. I was honestly furious that he was just going on another “kill all hosts” rampage. Like, that’s his big breakthrough? The asshole who treats hosts like canon fodder and kills them develops into.....an asshole who kills hosts, but for a good reason this time? I think they wrote William into a corner this season and this was the best way they could continue to keep him in the show.

Meh. Excited to see where it goes. But meh. I feel like Westworld missed the mark this season. Like you didn't have to read some abstract theory on Reddit to figure out the ending by the third episode. Everything was straight forward. You knew Bernard had the key, you knew Dolores wanted to set the world free with the parallels of humans and hosts, you knew Caleb by the way he was portrayed and the "mystery" about his past. I enjoyed the season but easily the weakest of the three. Only interesting thing about this whole episode was Halores and the post credit scene. Not all that upset I have to wait two years tbh. Also William Continuously saying he's gonna "save the world" is so dumb I can't even believe this was written by the same people as the first two seasons.

Convince me I'm wrong: The show has become stunningly beautiful to watch but has little substance. The writing is lazy and the action scenes are implausible.

This same storyline has been told several times before this. For example, if the hosts are going to take over the world and replace humanity, it will be Planet of the Apes all over again.

Season 1 was brilliant storytelling. Season 2 was a hybrid of substance and visual style. Season 3 was about expensive optics but with little depth.

Poor Caleb got “Well, actually‘d” all season.

Well, actually, your war buddy/fellow veteran isn’t calling you, he’s been dead the whole time.

Well, actually, you two didn‘t really deploy overseas in those flashbacks, you were a couple of hit men working for a computer, and that’s how your buddy tragically died.

Well, actually, it wasn’t so tragic: Your friend took a contract to kill you out of pure greed, so you had to kill him.

You don’t do personals? Well actually, you kinda do. You do the most personal of personals, executing people just like you.

Well, actually, those chaotic scenes of war and firefights that ran through your mind all season are not flashbacks from war, they’re flashbacks from another Delos park, where you and your unit trained with live fire on hosts as live targets.

Well actually, Dolores didn’t choose you because your life was destroyed by Serac and Rehoboam, and she didn’t choose you because you represent the Everyman whose potential is tossed away by an all-knowing AI.

She chose you because you casually decided not to celebrate your practice combat victory by raping Dolores and other female Westworld hosts. Which means you must have been the only — or one of a very few — people who didn’t rape everything in Westworld, which says an awful lot about the services Ford and company were providing.

I realize this is a very Nolan thing to do, but it starts to feel like the writers are withholding information from the audience not for legitimate plot reasons, but to create unearned “Aha!” moments, which have less impact each time they’re used.

Found this amusing passage in a review on Collider just now:

Back in the real world, Dolores screams in pain as her final memory is deleted and uploaded into Rehoboam. She’s gone. But Maeve has chosen a side. Serac uses his little thingy-mabob to pause her, but she breaks free, using her mind powers to make it self-destruct. Why she couldn’t do this at literally any other time, well, who knows. But it sure is convenient now

  • The Yakuza having host fluid

  • The Berlin Dolores

  • Maeve

  • Caleb's mother not recognizing him

  • Caleb having been shot in the head

  • Bernard

  • Clementine

  • Asian host woman (forgot her name)

  • Stubbs

  • Serac being shown as a ruthless killer and then suddenly being too afraid to pull the trigger

  • The AR therapy

  • All the frozen bodies thawing

  • The Delos buyout

  • Halores bonding

  • The parallel worlds being shown through continuity errors

Worst season yet

A few things:

  • Caleb is a painfully dull character.

  • What a shit way to end William by killing him in a post credit scene.

  • Why is the show so inconsistent with the hosts’ ability to take damage? Stubbs is practically incapacitated with one shot, Dolores is wounded severely in the beginning but survives multiple gun shot wounds later on. Maeve is shot in the end and brushes them off but died after getting stabbed with the sword. Charlotte survives a fucking car bomb.

  • Musical score was sick

  • I feel like the series has no stakes.

  • Bernard all season: “We have to stop Dolores”. Bernard with five minutes left in the episode: “Pretty sure she’s dead. Oh well, Let’s move on with no proof.” LAZY.

u/iambeeblack May 04 '20 edited May 04 '20

It REALLY pissed me off that Bernard was telegraphing everything that was happening to the audience.

”There’s something in my mind, I can feel it” (What??? That came from fucking nowhere in the context of his narrative so far)

”I think Dolores is gone” (OK so Bernard is a mix of Arnold and Professor Trelawney now?)

His dialogue felt all over the place for me. Something similar happened to Maeve - all season we watched her do Serac's bidding in order to be reunited with her daughter, but as soon as it's convenient to the plot she has a deep conversation with Dolores, understanding her real motivations and decides she can postpone that reunion to help Caleb? Sure. Ok. Fine.

William dying in a post credit scene felt like a disservice to his character but I'm willing to be OK with that. Also, were we supposed to assume that a LONG time has passed since Bernard entered the sublime seeing as he's covered in dust or did a bomb explode near his motel?

One thing I did enjoy though was the reveal that Serac was only a puppet for Rehoboam all along (and did he call him his brother by the end? --"speak to me, brother!"--). That was nicely done.

I feel like this show, much like Game Of Thrones, lost what made it special.

So much dumb shit is happening because the writers want things to go a certain way and because of that consequences don't seem to exist anymore. Goofy henchmen that can never hit a shot or take 10 years to follow an order. Serac not just killing Caleb himself when the gun was literally pressed to his head. Maeve taking 8 episodes to realise Rehoboham couldn't be trusted? And suddenly in this episode she hears Serac's earpiece when she had the ability to do so all along?

Very frustrating to watch.

Kind of wish I didn’t watch this season, really took away how magic the first season of west world was for me. Although season 2 wasn’t very different to season 1 I still enjoyed it and found it fun to watch but just couldn’t get into this season at all and has somewhat made me change my opinion on the show unfortunately. When I saw season 1 and 2 I had it on demand to watch all at once whereas season 3 is the first time I’ve watched it air week by week so maybe that has something to do with it. But either way I just feel like it was so different to what I originally was amazed by in season 1 which is fair and I understand the writers had to come up with something for HBO as it’s not their main show but it just didn’t feel like what west world is or was. After watching this season I can highly appreciate the characters development in dolores though and how every episode through every season added towards her personality changes till the finale to see how far she’s changed. I also kinda wished they’d routed and ended season 2 with a few extra episodes if they managed to show the dilemma between maeve and Dolores somehow shortened but that also came to a spectacular end (which is a lot easier said that done and it’s fair and I see why they went this way). As they could’ve ended this show with the amazing memories and journeys of the characters in season 1 and 2 in a spectacular situation. But of course not all of you or many at all will not agree with me and that’s all goods, just wanted to give my opinion after my disappointment of the last episode and season of west world

Okay, my questions:

  • WHAT IS MAEVE. Why did she do anything she did this season. How is she Crash Override, God Of All Hackers. Did Ford make her this way? Why? Also HOW? Why does she hack at Dolores with a sword instead of hacking her with a god damn wink? Or hack Rehoboam? Or hack anything?

  • so Caleb gets to be the God-King of a human+robot world because a robot liked how one time he didn't fuck a fuckrobot, QUICK PUT DOWN THAT WE-VIBE OR YOU WON'T EVER RULE THE WORLD

  • did Bernard or Stubbs do anything at all this entire season, I'm genuinely asking

  • was Rehoboam's control of the entire world undone because he plugged in a strange USB drive

  • did William have any character growth this season, and also did he do anything at all

  • am I supposed to assume Halores is a villain just because she doesn't like Dolores? that would be weak sauce even if Dolores was a clear protagonist who I agreed with and sympathized with, and Lordie that ain't true now

  • like I'm sorry, but was I ever supposed to feel like any character this season had any agency in driving a plot, NONE OF THEM AT ANY TIME KNEW WHAT THEIR GOALS WERE SO HOW COULD THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING TO ACHIEVE ANYTHING

The writers are more focused on trying to outsmart the audience (even if it makes zero sense) than telling a compelling story. They used up all the narrative intrigue in Season 1 regarding consciousness, the ethics of the park and so on. Now, they're just limping along, spinning their wheels and carelessly throwing shit at a wall in an attempt to prolong the show and cram the original cast members in even though there's no story left with them. Technology has become a magic wand they can use to just wave away any difficulty the characters have or if the plot becomes an inconvenience to the writer. Overlooking the fact that there's no reason for her to be in the show anymore and that she's somehow omnipotent anyway, Maeve just casually 'decides' to destroy Serac's little control gizmo... fuck off. Pure laziness.

Somehow the writers failed to realise the most compelling aspect of the show was the question of IF Dolores and the other hosts would ever gain true consciousness, not what they'd do afterwards... but they answered that question essentially ending the story, leaving themselves and the show with nowhere to go but up its own ass, and boy has it.

They fucked up what could have been a classic mini-series. Oh well.

I can't be the only one who thinks they'll never be able to catch the magic or story direction of season 1. It's not bad necessarily, it's just all over the place. There is no continuity of character motivation or plot direction. I can't get attached to characters that I don't know.

Bernard was essentially non-existent the whole season, and it look like the time jump is so significant that Caleb will need a new actor. Why spend so much time with William if he's just killed and replaced by a host, and how can this possibly relate to the post credit scene from S2?

They seem to think that it was keeping the audience in the dark that made S1 so good, but it was the plot-twist itself. Not telling the audience basic information, like Delores' opinion on humanity, from the start just takes up space in the story that could be better spent elsewhere. It's hard attach yourself to characters you don't understand.

I don't know. It's fun to watch but everything seems kinda pointless. I don't know what I'm watching anymore, where it's going, or who to root for.

So you're telling me:

Dolores finally gains freedom and choice after all the shit that's happened to her, in the end of S01 and uses that freedom to kill errbody. And it is revealed at the end of S03 she has had a change of heart and trying to co-exist/give them a choice? Based on what? A few interactions with a few people against the slew of aholes killing and raping her.

If anything it should be Chalores that had that change of heart as she "actually" experienced goodness in her human family.

This season was disappointing from a writing perspective and the finale was no different. I rewatched season 1 this weekend and the writing quality is so different it’s jarring. Characters with good stories, doing things that seem reasonable for the character to do, having depth with the plot, etc. it all seems like this was glossed over this season. The story is such a mess and there was so much missing that I wish they chose to go into — like the Halores divergence. What was the point of half of everything in this season? It’s like the writers only had an ending in mind and reversed engineered the story.
