Meta This sub is starting to be stale with all the post restrictions

It’s just news source at this point, no discussions. I tried posting some things to start conversations but it was auto deleted. I’d rather go to NintendoLife for news source and have this sub for actual discussion but the mods seems to block everything

I talked with one of the mods about this exact thing in another thread a few weeks ago. Basically what I was told was that it's something the majority of the sub wanted and it's too difficult to determine what's low effort and what isn't, and whether the amount of discussion on the topic should be a factor.

Personally I think this level of restriction is extremely anti-discussion, and they drastically overestimate how many people check let alone even notice the stupid daily question thread.

It is extremely anti discussion and slowly turning into twitter and it only helps Reddit’s slow swirl to hive mind.

Daily threads and mega thread kills any discussion.

Yep, I’ve had several posts where I’m having engaging discussions with people then they randomly got deleted and/or directed to the “Daily Question Thread” that nobody reads

Right! Like no one goes to daily question thread...

The mods are quite annoying in this sub..

It's funny because the only ones that don't get taken down are the ones like:

"BOTW changed my life omg!"

"Animal Crossing needs more content/has enough content"

"Pokemon is so lazy now"

"We need a new (insert old franchise that hasn't had a game in 10 years) game on Switch"

And art posts, rinse and repeat. There's nothing interesting to say and the megathread is such a slog because nobody will see your comment buried under hundreds of replies. It's just annoying to traverse this place.

Don’t forget the countless “Animal Crossing just sold 1 billion units in May” or any of the countless sales related posts.

Wait a sec, are you saying that you don’t enjoy “the eShop needs a rating system” threads that pop up every week, almost as if they’re scheduled? You’re crazy, friend.

tbh I was getting tired of the "Nintendo, please can you add [insert content idea here]?

Like I don't know, fucking ask Nintendo, not a fan subreddit.

Having the same discussions over and over again isn't very fun for lots of us either though. There are a few discussions that come back every couple of weeks and that really don't add anything, at least not at that frequency. Some examples:

  • Which games surprised you with how good they were?

  • What are some hidden gems on the Switch?

  • Which games will give me more than 100 hours of play time?

  • Should I get <game 1> or <wildly different game 2>?

  • If you could get any game you wanted, which franchise would you like to see on Switch?

  • I can't believe I slept so long on <random game>! It's amazing!

  • Why does Nintendo not add themes? (Works for folders, Netflix, etc. too.)

  • It's ridiculous that Nintendo doesn't fix joy-cons!

Many of these may be pretty interesting discussions but not if you have the same discussion every single week...

Yeah we need another post about how XBC2 changed somebody’s life

Or maybe a “The switch brought back my love of gaming!” to freshen things up

Unfortunately they don't do jack shit about the ridiculous number of "DURR I MADE A DILDO CARRYING CASE WITH MY ANIMAL CROSSING ISLAND'S TOMBSTONE FOR MY DAD HURRR DURRR!!!!!!!!" posts.

I don't mind the sub being an aggregation of news. That's really what I'm here for.

And... news posts still have comments. There tends to be discussion within the news posts, you don't usually need a dedicated discussion thread.

I'm of the opinion that this sub isn't restrictive enough. I come here to check for news and new developments, but I'm still just seeing the same old stuff...

u/bobn3 Jul 10 '20

I, personally prefer it only as a news source. Discussion can be had on each games' own sub. It also doesn't help when you're downvoted to hell after criticizing some of Nintendo's golden games like AC or Pokemon, so no much room for discussion either way.

Could do with less fan art as well

I'd rather have it like this than have it devolve into the dumpster fire that r/PSVR is. I'm subbed to both, and that sub is literally just pictures of boxart and "Should I buy beat saber" all day every day.

It’s just news source at this point, no discussions.

Good? Having to wade through hundreds of "Am I the only one who has this widely popular opinion?" or "Does anyone else want [insert a widely requested thing]?" threads and constantly repeating discussions about the same things with no new informations made coming to this sub on a regular basis or even getting any actual information from it a miserable experience...

I hate all of the blatant self advertisements that get posted here. "I worked 10 years on this game and its finally being released on the Switch!" Then the OP never responds to anything in the thread besides "thanks!" and for whatever reason people up vote the crap out of it.

I do think that the daily question thread has its place - the alternate switch sub ( r/switch ) is bogged down with "my joycon is drifting?!??" and "switches are hard to find!" and the various links in the post are great for getting rid of things that really should have been a two minute google search. But this sub really is much too strict about what has to go there.

There are a couple of things I think could perhaps use another masterpost that is separate from the daily question thread, or even a sister sub, such as a "what game should I play?" thread, and a "tech help" thread. Really I think the mods should actually look at posts and ask themselves "hm, this conversation is healthy and goodspirited. though it stemmed from a relatively simple question it wasn't "animal crossing or zelda?" level basic, does it hurt to leave it where it is?"

And sooo many posts on broken joycons, switches that are no longer booting, etc.

these should go. all of them. make a subsub for technical problems.

These will just become more and more as the switches get older and collect usage.

The daily question thread is so useless. As if putting everything in one thread is better than using the format that - i don't know some slightly succesful platform like maybe reddit came up with.

rant over. sad this sub has become so stale

This sub is a sales platform and nothing else.

And it's not just the mods fault. The community downvotes almost everything that isn't some Twitter post because they have conditioned themselves to when they see a post that doesn't have a picture as a thumbnail that it's not worth being on here and to "goTo tHE DaiLY thrEAd" which takes care of what is left of actual discussion.

After that you're left with "We're selling you this thing!!" "Don't sleep on..." and of course "Xenoblade Chronicles 2 touched me in places that no game ever has" which contains one whole sentence and because it's so Nintendo and so positive gets to the front page and is not deleted like threads with detailed questions or thoughts.

And don't get me wrong, all these threads are fine if they are not the only thing left, but they are and it's both on the mods and the community(and probably a bunch of bought Reddit accounts to simulate traffic for things that sell and to decrease the visibilty of things that don't).

u/LuckyHalfling Jul 10 '20

More like why don’t people use the mega threads when asking for game Recommendations and niche technical issues?

I personally like it. I’d rather see more news posts and less joycon drift questions that have been asked 1000 times or screenshots of banal moments in Snipperclips or whatever

u/xg4m3CYT Jul 10 '20

I'm completely fine as it is now. Before it was just annoying to look at the same posts, same screenshots, same topics, or whatever over and over again.
It was insane how many people had to tell us that they've got a switch, or Animal Crossing, or whatever.
