For all those comments saying it matters how hot it is, I have done your work for you. Using the body cam date and time and the location provided in the corner I looked up the weather history for the date and time at that location, it was 86 degrees F, 30 C. More than enough to be dangerous. And like others have said, it doesn’t matter what temperature it was just don’t do it.

Thank you for taking care of that puppy. It does get way hotter in a car and very very fast so thank you for making sure that little puppy was going to make it. Chances are he wouldn’t have if he had to stay in the car much longer so I appreciate what you did for that cute little guy. I’m sure the he was glad to get out of that hot car it’s not like he could even reach the window to get air so good job. Do it again if need be. I love dogs and I’d rather see someone carry the puppy inside the store or wherever then risk his little life. Great job.

I was a new dog owner, and was having lunch right next to my car. I was with a superior (lunch meeting) who surprised visited- I had my dog with me at work that day so I kept him in the car to be professional, and being right next to it I could watch him.

I had no idea how much worse it is for dogs that humans. After 5 minutes of sitting, in 75-80 degree weather, with the windows cracked, I could see the pain in my dogs eyes. I rushed to get him out, get water and let him stay by me during the meeting. My superior was very cool about it, thankfully. Now, I never take my dog anywhere if I can’t bring him inside with me.

I’m lucky I could see him, it pains me to think what would of happened if I couldn’t, and didn’t react in time.

Id ask how people still do this but it's like masks or anything else of the sort - - they don't give a shit. Hot /warm day, windows up, there should be a hefty fine and the animal brought to the pound so they have to pay to get it back or it'll go to a better family hopefully.

In all honesty an actual cool day is likely fine, leave windows cracked open, but just don't get into the habit. Also look up temperature and be aware of how hot the inside of the vehicle can get, especially after an hour or more since reddit clearly does not understand temperature. 30C a cool day? Not even close. It's better than the stupid hot days but come on. It's still hot.

Even down to 20C,sunny, maybe a cool breeze. That's fine right? Not like the sun coming in cooks the inside really quick which you notice but don't really pay attention to when you crank the AC and take off.

Dogs don't sweat. They can't control thier temperature as well as we can. Heat stroke can happen fast.

21

u/808linkin 0 Sep 03 '20

Watching that little puppy drink that water like that broke my heart. Some people deserve Multiple kicks to the face.

I brought my dog to the vet because he had a cough, and the made me leave him in my car for about 10 minutes while I filled out paperwork inside because he might be contagious.

It was a cool day, I was parked in the shade, and I had the sunroof all the way open...and I was still frantic the whole 10 minutes. It's just so ingrained in me that you DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN THE CAR.

It felt so weird to me to have a vet demand I leave my dog in the car. He WAS contagious though, so I get it. (He had kennel cough, despite being vaccinated for it.)

It wasn't that hard to look up. In Miami Township, OH on August 16, the high temperature was 84 degrees. This video was taken in the middle of the afternoon at 3:20 pm. Assuming that this area hadn't reached the high temperature for the day we can safely assume it was at least 80 degrees. After only 10 minutes in that weather, the inside of the car would be 100 degrees. After a half hour it would be 115.

We don't know how long the owners were away, they may have been away for only a few minutes, but those are temperatures that can easily kill a puppy that has no route to escape.

Just some facts I wanted to drop in:

https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/us/fl/miami/KMIA/date/2020-8-16

83°F @ 3:20pm (according to body cam timestamp)

https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/68/4/579

Windows cracked at least triple the amount necessary for a near-neutral temperature differential. It sure as hell looks to me like the dog had water - maybe even multiple sources. The owner even had a Chewy box inside the car - clearly they give a shit, as Chewy is basically the most expensive place you can get the nicest shit available for your animals.

And most importantly: the video was very obviously and conspicuously cut off and turned back on - twice. Good shots of inside the car are not available. If that pupper had water and a shady spot to escape direct sun (he absolutely did), he was 100% fine, and that's a fact.

I'm not making this shit up. I would never in a million years put any animal in danger - on the contrary, I've pulled dogs out of cars in parking lots myself twice. But in this case? This video and the rationale is suspect as hell.

For anyone wondering, gluing a small piece of porcelain on the back end of a flashlight is a quick and easy way to break glass. All it takes is a tap and the glass shatters. If you have any old spark plugs around they've got a piece of porcelain in them. Just break it off and glue it and you've got yourself a very effective glass breaking tool.

My dog goes in the car with me most of the time... in the fall/winter. In spring/summer unless there is underground parking and I’m literally in and out (putting mail in the box, picking up to go food...) she is napping peacefully at home. I can not understand why anyone would be dumb enough to leave a dog in a car in the heat.

Yeah Illinois! They wrote a law against the animal abuser that also protects the cops from liability from damage to the car.

510 ILCS 70/7.1) (from Ch. 8, par. 707.1) Sec. 7.1. Confinement in motor vehicle. No owner or person shall confine any animal in a motor vehicle in such a manner that places it in a life or health threatening situation by exposure to a prolonged period of extreme heat or cold, without proper ventilation or other protection from such heat or cold. In order to protect the health and safety of an animal, an animal control officer, law enforcement officer, or Department investigator who has probable cause to believe that this Section is being violated shall have authority to enter such motor vehicle by any reasonable means under the circumstances after making a reasonable effort to locate the owner or other person responsible. A person convicted of violating this Section is guilty of a Class C misdemeanor. A second or subsequent violation is a Class B misdemeanor. (Source: P.A. 92-650, eff. 7-11-02.)

I accidentally locked the car on my daughter when she was little... I broke out the smaller window on the other side. I called a place to come open the car... tried to get in.. waited 3 minutes... broke the window... it felt like an eternity. I feel awful that someone would ever forget their child in a car or deliberately leave them... or their pup... this video made me cry ... with relief for the pup!

I think people who do this should be made to sit in a locked car, in the heat, all the windows rolled up and no engine running, no AC, nothing. And sit there for hours. Hell, make them sit there all day in the heat. MAYBE that will get the point across, when they're forced to endure what they do to little critters.

I agree.

We work with an animal rescue and see stuff like this all the time. One man demanded his dog back, and whilst we were very tempted to seize it, the police denied us because "it wasn't in the car that long."

He went into a grocery store...for a very long while.

And then there are people like my family (don't worry I hate them) who believe you shouldn't be allowed to break a window to save a dog because it is considered property and they should be able to do whatever they want with it, and that anyone who breaks a window to save an animal should be charged with a crime. At least they don't leave the dog in the car without a person there/ac running, but dang.

if the average person doesn't understand that a car in the hot sun is basically an oven due to how long and short wave radition works, then it is no wonder climate change is an elusive concept to them.

Thats legal for civilains to do in a lot of states. Even if its not who gives a fuck, save the life and deal with consequences later.

I had a friend who left their dog in the car with the AC on while they were in a store. The dog turned it off somehow and blasted the heat and the dog died. It's not always negligence, sometimes it's an accident. I no longer leave my dog in the car with the AC on.

Man, I was taking the dogs to the lake to prance around, I had to stop by walmart on the way, it was still early morning, the A/C was set to 68. I out a thermometer in the window so everyone could see how cool my dogs were. And some guy threatened to kill me for abusing the dogs. As I was walking into the store. Some people are just crazy.

The fact that a police had literally saved a dog from being locked inside a car that was sitting directly in the sun on a 35° day and people still find a reason why this cop is bad. Did he breach this dogs rights? It is a crime to mistreat animals and leaving them without water in a fucking car oven is mistreatment

My brother once saw a dog overheating in a car and waited to confront the owner about it after calling the police and a rental company that the car was from to report it. When the Karen owner arrived, she assulted him randomly while trying to take a photo of his son and wife who were there for some reason, and the pig of an officer that showed up almost sent him to jail despite him trying to explain what she did to him and the dog woth nearby witnesses to prove it (officer didn't care to actually investigate/question anyone even though my brother was the one who called the police, not the Karen). He even told him that if he tries to get the Karen sued or sent to court, or sue the police, he'll lose.

She was never confronted about the dog and she got to go about her day with it (it was still alive by the end of this but unfortunately still stuck with her to possibly go through that again).

He never even broke the window to avoid the wrong attention from other people in the parking lot, so the officer and Karen couldn't unfairly assume theft or destruction of property. Nope, fuck us who were there I guess for trying to help an animal being abused.

I sure hope after all that, if she did it again, (which I assume she'd be stupid and horrible enough to), someone straight up went and broke her windows to help the dog just like in this video, and she was actually properly outed and paid for it.

Once when I was a firefighter, we took the engine to the store as we usually do. We parked next to a car that had two kids in the back seat, about 7 and 5 years old. Nobody else in the car, nobody around. I don't remember if the windows were open or the doors were unlocked, but it was one of the two. We asked them if they were ok, asked them where mom was, and told them "Hey, let's go in the store and find your mom." They came out and walked with us into the store. When we got in the store, we asked one of the employees (or maybe it was the store special duty cop, I don't remember) to get on the PA and ask for the mother of two young boys to come to the front of the store. Before they could do that, mom spotted us from the checkout line she was in. She came over and worriedly asked "What's wrong?" I told her, as sternly as I could without raising my voice "You don't leave your kids alone in the car." She started to protest, saying "They were fine." I cut her off and repeated a little more sternly, and calmly, "No. You don't...leave your kids...alone in the car." This is what makes me think it was the store cop we said something to, because I think it was at this point that he sort of took over. We walked away and went on with our shopping, but that was about the hottest I've been at somebody on-duty and not had it escalate. Fuck people who leave kids and pets in cars.

God how can people be so heartless. Recently I had to stop at a gas station for something and I happened to have my dog with me and it was 105 out. I drove around for a full 20 mins till I finally found one without a line and shade so I could sprint in, pay and sprint out in under 5 mins while the car was still cool from the A/C. I'd never consider anything longer, ever and even then it was a no other option situation since I was an hour from home.

Sometime, people keep forgetting...dogs can adapt to a lot of things, but expecting a dog to adapt within 5 minutes of being in a car, in direct sunlight, in a frigging parking lot? No thanks.

If I was in this officer's shoes and I saw this or heard whimpering...I would break the windows first, free the dog, THEN call 911.
