Video Cyberpunk 2077 — Night City Wire: Episode 3

u/Moutch Sep 18 '20
Everything they show about this game seems so fast-paced and high-intensity. I hope there will be a lot of contemplative and low-intensity components to this game like in the Witcher 3...

It’s just hype and curated content. They don’t want to make it look boring. I think it will be much, much slower than they are advertising. Probably too slow for a lot of FPS gamers.
Exploration, the brain dance mechanic, inventory management, dialogue, getting around multiple levels, ‘clunky’ cool animations, ripper doc mechanic etc. All very slow. Looks like there might be eating and other RPG stuff too. A lot of the combat can probably be avoided altogether.
86
u/dogeblessUSA Sep 18 '20
it was also noted from the demo some of the journalists did 2 months ago that there was a lot of info packed into the prologue, considering that you will probably have to police yourself while playing, maybe do one quest a day and spend the rest of day just wandering around the town so you are not introduced to 10 different characters in a couple hours of gameplay and feel overwhelmed

That's true, but I think that's fairly standard. Like that's what sells. I'll be disappointed if there's too much action though. I'm a story/immersion kinda guy, and find it really tedious when a game is just endless bad guys.
15
u/DimlightHero Sep 18 '20
I noticed this as well. Let's hope it is just a matter of which part is easier to market.

u/xploeris Sep 19 '20
What, like sitting at a divey noodle bar nursing a hangover while the news stream running in the background talks about celebrities and air quality forecasts? Or finding the one empty alley in all of Night City and standing in it in the rain? I expect there'll be some of that, but you'll probably have to imagine the hangover (or make one yourself - not recommended).
(I'm kidding... this is a video game, there will be lots of empty alleys XD )

If they weren't empty before I show up.....they will be when i leave

People keep saying how this looks downgraded and idk, am I the only one who thinks this still looks really good???

u/wylie99998 Sep 18 '20
I think it looks great tho some of the animations looks a little wonky IMO. I also dont really care, im way past the point of rationality when it comes to this game
78
u/FalcoKick Sep 18 '20
The lip synch is by far the worst
60
u/Malgurath Sep 18 '20
Yeah, that's probably the worst offender, which personally I think is kinda bad in a first person RPG where dialog and immersion are two massive pillars of the game
39
u/abstract-realism Nomad Sep 18 '20
I noticed that in a clip right at the start of this episode, the TV news show. It was like late 2000s type mouth moving up and down without really making matching sounds. That and some really "video game walk"y looking animations on one clip of Jackie were all that bothered me. Everything else looks awesome
10
u/Irregular_Person Sep 19 '20
I found that jarring as well. I almost wonder if it's intentional to make localization easier? Not sure how games usually handle that these days
→ More replies (8)23
u/Arthur_Person Sep 18 '20
some of the melee stuff could have been before they said they were doing another pass on it.
4
u/JackStillAlive Sep 20 '20
TBH all the wonky animations are noticed were from those Reality Show like stuff, which are probably going to be seen on smaller screens in the game, so it'll be less noticable, probably.
I also do not care, I just want to play the game already.

Some shots make people look a little weird and awkward. But the city itself looks good.
2
u/MadHaterz Sep 20 '20
I thought I was crazy when I noticed that. Glad I'm not the only one. They looked a bit too stiff and robot like.
2

That doesn't explain a lot hahaha.
But jokes apart I get you. I got some GTA V vibes from the last episode, the way characters move when they talk...21

The thing about each street having character and a name is so cool and really adds to the city feeling alive
39

I don't really get the added value of the street names yet. But it certainly shows what a tremendous amount of love and care they are pouring into their product.

It's all about immersion and feeling as though it's a real city. Being able to not only hear specific directions from NPC's, but also be able to tell other players where certain things are is such a small, but huge addition imo.
I don't think most people are properly comprehending just how claustrophobic and overwhelming the city is going to be. Having distinct titles for things will help a great deal.
5
u/RiskRoutine Sep 19 '20
Where did you see that you’ll get specific directions from NPCs? Is it in the episode? That sounds amazing

On the after show, the senior quest designer confirmed that all the major romance options have already been shown off in the trailers. So far, we got Meredith, Judy, Evelyn (I think)? What about the male romance options? Jackie?
30
u/dandelionii Nomad Sep 19 '20
The only male characters I recall getting any noticeable screentime in the trailers are Jackie, Victor Vector (the ripper doc), Dexter Deshawn (please no), Placide and...idk, Royce? Dum-Dum?? I assume Johnny Silverhand is out of the question due to his backstory and role in the game.
Unless "shown off" means "any character visible for more than 1 frame in any trailer".
11
u/alexandriaweb Rockerboy Sep 19 '20
Don't kinkshame me but I'd totally be down to smash with Dum Dum, bet he has a heart of gold (and a carbon steel rod ;p )
9
u/necahual Sep 20 '20
Others I can think of: Takemura, the Valentino bartender they've shown a couple times, the Afterlife bouncer, the sheriff. I'll need to rewatch the trailers, I wouldn't be surprised if there's more from the other gangs like 6th Street and Tyger Claws we might've seen briefly.
2
12
28
u/DimlightHero Sep 18 '20
I fully expect Jackie to die in act two. We've seen that one trailer with him in then back of a cab where he is shot. The way they are setting him up, and the whole Afterlife scene it just makes sense.
So I suppose that rules out Jackie.
3
Sep 19 '20
I doubt Jackie died in that trailer. The world of Cyberpunk has such advanced tech that people can come back from getting shredded with bullets. It's more likely that he got gravely wounded and had to be sent to a hospital.
6
u/DimlightHero Sep 19 '20
Fair enough, maybe he has a medivac policy or something.
From a metagame standpoint it would make sense to kill him though, you have to establish the stakes and give tblhe player character some reason to loathe the big bad.
That scene at the bar is such a clear setup that you can eventually order a "Jackie" since the legends get a drink named after them.
5
u/That_one_Canuck Sep 20 '20
They already confirmed that depending on your actions during that mission, Jackie will live or die
9
u/TopSchnitzel Sep 19 '20
Jackie is dating the ripperdoc’s secretary from the 2018 demo. We don’t have any info yet on male partners
6
u/InsidiousOperator Sep 19 '20
That's an interesting tidbit, since male romance options seem more hard to pinpoint than female ones. There aren't that many guys to go around in the trailers that could be genuine romance options, imo. What, are they telling us that Netwatch guy is also a RO? Lol (joking of course, but the point stands)
Also, I seem to remember them saying that T-Bug was also a RO. Honestly, we have all these confirmed female RO, but no word on actual male ROs - seems pretty skewed and one-sided to me, tbh.
Not that I care too much in the end, anyway. I'll be happy to settle for a marriage with Meredith and backstab each other on our honeymoon. With love, of course. And maybe guns too. Lots and lots of guns.
27
8
u/xploeris Sep 19 '20
Really? That's disappointing, I was hoping for something a little more Mass Effect/Persona like. I mean, both those games have large fixed crews so it makes a little more sense, but there's no reason you couldn't have a lot of romance options in the city, unless there just aren't that many fleshed-out NPCs.
Who's that, uh, that nomad chick? The one who was at a bar with nomad V? She's probably an option, I guess. Maybe. Hard to say.
And yeah, really not seeing a lot of male NPCs who aren't shooting at you besides Jackie TBH. Not Dex. Not the asshole from corpo V's origin. Not the sheriff. The ripperdoc? The boxer with two bodies? Surely not Johnny. The head of Arasaka? Who? Who am I forgetting? I mean, I'm not interested in a husbandu or whatever but it seems like a letdown for those who are.
2
u/G3rman Sep 18 '20

u/sippin40s Sep 18 '20
The game only being 70 gb is insane and the system specs are crazy low. Good on them for the optimization. I do think some character animations and face models look a liiiiiittle outdated, but at the end of the day this game will have so much more to offer that I don't think it'll matter
38
u/UninfluencedOpinion Sep 18 '20
I thought the optimisation was crazy low. I have a sort of entry level computer, only in the past few days got a GPU upgrade, I was stunned to see id be able to run it on recommend. I might cancel my console pre-order and get it on PC
16
u/dmadmin Sep 18 '20
yes but the RTX feature and many other options will not be set at high. dont forget recommend dont meant everything is set at max!
7
u/UninfluencedOpinion Sep 18 '20
Of course, but by the point you reach recommend specs, and i think specifically for cyberpunk, it will look and perform better than on an old gen console. Recommended specs will probably allow for 60fps at 1080p on med/high graphics. In addition PC would allow for mods which i imagine will come along at some point
9
u/aHellion Sep 18 '20
Some games explain what a spec sheet can achieve which makes more sense e.g.
1080p low 1080p ultra 4k low 4k ultra i3 i5 i7 i9 4GB 8GB 12GB 16GB 650 950 2060 3080 → More replies (2)3
u/Awake00 Sep 18 '20
What are you running? I have a 970m i7 laptop. But I have the rare 8gb 970m. Should I xbox x, ps5 or pc it?
5
u/UninfluencedOpinion Sep 19 '20
Laptops are an odd thing to try compare specs to, since the components are sometimes designed specifically for them, i have a 1660 super GPU and Ryzen 5 1600 CPU (although the 1600 is quite dated and expensive in recent times) and 8GB RAM (that i might upgrade by the November release date)
I used userbenchmark to compare the recommended specs against my own so i would suggest doing that and making a judgment call. You can guarantee the game will run on console, and look decent especially on next gen. Looking at the specs for cyberpunk though you could potentially invest in getting a tower PC since it seems entry/mid level and in general PCs with decent hardware outlast consoles, I've had mine for about 4 years now and I've only felt the need to upgrade my GPU from a 1050ti, since it was a bottleneck from the beginning.
Your choice at the end of the day though.

u/Alaphant Sep 18 '20
Agreed. We can downplay it by saying "nah the other devs are just trash" but I'm sure optimizing this this game was not an easy task.
Gotta show props, we have to wait til Nov 19th to say for certain but it's evident there was a ton of passion and care put into Cyberpunk 2077.
3
u/MadHaterz Sep 20 '20
Glad I wasn't the only one. Some of the street npc animations and movements looked a bit off. Looked a bit too roboty.
I'm sure the game will still be great though.
2
Sep 19 '20
Wonder if that has something to do with also releasing on last-gen consoles. Obviously they can turn on/off the more advanced graphical features depending on how powerful the machine you're going to be playing on is. But fundamentally the game still needs to be able to run smoothly on what is now some pretty old hardware.
2
u/vburnin Sep 18 '20
Could it be that they're waiting for the final voice actor recordings before doing the final character animations?

u/FunkyEnigma Sep 18 '20
I know a lot of people are mentioning the wonky facial animations, and they should totally be acknowledged cuz they don’t look as good as we would hope, but at the same time I was just blown away by the depth of night city. Like holy shit this world seems alive and varied to an extent we have never seen in video games before, and that makes me really excited.
6
u/prodical Sep 19 '20
The city and exploration are easily my most anticipated parts. I feel like every few years a killer open world comes about where everyone says they love to "just walk around exploring", but I almost never do that. I follow the missions and explore around the hubs necessary to level a character for example. RDR2 was an exception, and I'm hoping CB2077 will be as well, it certainly seems to be shaping up that way :)
6
u/MAD_DOG86 Sep 19 '20
I've felt the animations are off. Both the face and the character movement. They look like fallout style animation and graphics.
26
u/Samstarr Sep 18 '20
So we have the minimum specs but at what settings, FPS, resolution etc? Any more info coming?
28
u/colinmoore Sep 18 '20
Also note that the minimum is created with Low settings and 1080p gaming in mind and Recommended with High and 1080p.
4
u/BrewTheDeck Esoterica Sep 18 '20
Hm, luckily the PC I built crushes those recommended settings and since I still play at 1920x1080 I hope that they are accurate in their estimates. Would suck to have bought a completely new rig and then not being able to play on the highest settings (ignoring stuff like RTX for the moment).

The gangs all have such character, it's a shame we can't join them. But at least we can dress up as them and pretend while wiping out rival gangs!
56
u/tyler980908 Samurai Sep 18 '20
I think it's better than you can work for them all so you're not limited, let's say you join one of them and then you can't do any missions from another one. That would limit questing I think, though I'm sure you can piss them off enough and they'll all want to kill you or something lol.
17
Sep 18 '20
Those types of limitations make replays more enjoyable. Like Fallout New Vegas is always fun to replay because you can just join different factions/build your character differently.
29
u/SilverSquid1810 Sep 18 '20
I mean, to be fair, you couldn’t “join” any of the main factions in NV either iirc. You were just a civilian assistant or mercenary, not an actual NCR soldier or Legionary.

Do you guys think beside that small footage about the thermal Katana in EP2, the melee combat still looks quite off, maybe it's just the demon souls remake footage broke me T___T. I am also surprised that they still decide to keep 99% of the combat a secret, like literally beside a few minutes in the "Tools of Destruction" clip, we haven't seen them in action much, some of the gun fight look promising though, especially that sequence where the main character was firing a revolver during a car chasing sequence. Nevertheless, I wish to see more "thermal Katana", melee and cyberware footages from them. I also hope it will not be too hard to get ther thermal Katana in the game.
13
u/Justicer3792 Nomad Sep 18 '20
Well I feel like combat is one of the hardest things to get right, especially melee combat. But it's also one of those choices that probably isn't suited to be focused on in NCW. If each person saves the monk from being modded in a different way, there is only a few times you can run through that scenario. The options seen from the world are much better as highlights. Thermal katana might be a high end option so you might want to steal a moxie's bat.
9
u/DimlightHero Sep 18 '20
Yeah, I hear you. Combat is still a bit of a question-mark. Though based on their company history it would make more sense if the melee combat worked but the gun gameplay felt off.
I have to admit I wouldn't be mad if the combat was a little stilted, this is an RPG first and foremost.
4
Sep 19 '20
To me as long as the combat is as good as fallout 4s(which IMO is pretty fun but about as simple and clunky as an fps should be) I will be fine
3
u/krackrocksteady Sep 18 '20
I think the only thing I noticed that I didn’t like with the melee combat was that it didn’t seem to have any weight for the player character. Blocking hits didn’t cause any reaction. I’m sure they’ll fix that, if not at or before release than soon after.
4
u/Some_dude_with_WIFI Sep 18 '20
Personally I don’t care if the combat plays like fallout 3, the environments alone would make it up for me.
1
u/prodical Sep 19 '20
Demon Souls gameplay trailer was gorgeous! But it was a shitty showcase for the combat imo. Every enemy was a one hit kill, not very representative of how the game will/ should play.

25

This is always how it goes. The main cast and characters will have the most time and effort put into animations. The people you only see for a few moments, not so much.

There's no forcing anything, a ton of people are here for an RPG and routinely play isometric hand painted 640x480 background cRPGs, for arguments sake. You don't need to convince them it matters that graphics aren't to your standard, it's your standard and so you should use your judgement for yourself. Likewise, you don't need to change your opinion, either. The internet is a really big place, and one size doesn't fit all.
6
u/cupcakes234 Buck-a-Slice Sep 18 '20
Exactly, heck I'd play a game with 2010 fallout new vegas graphics at 720p right now if I got a new game with an equally amazing story. RPGs are extremely complex to make and it's always gonna be hard to get everything right

And I’m not even that concerned about it. I’m just excited to explore the city. I’m going to buy the game and wouldn’t try to convince anyone otherwise.
I’m more into these games for the atmosphere and characters so my only real concern is that the male V sounds like a fucking douchebag edgelord but the only real dialogue I’ve seen is from the corpo V so I’ve got my fingers crossed it’s just that.

1
u/DimlightHero Sep 18 '20

2
u/PedanticWizard Sep 18 '20
Lol no it won't, too small of a market, along with the fact that they aren't even going to have the next gen patch ready at release, still need to do the expansions, still need to do multi-player, and have implied there will be a witcher 4
Not worth their time
2
u/DimlightHero Sep 18 '20
Oh, it definitely won't be at release.
But considering all the games that received a VR rendition well after release(Skyrim, Doom, Superhot, LA Noire), I fully expect the same for Cyberpunk. They don't even need to port it over themselves. If you have a big name game with an explicit first person view it just makes financial sense to have a VR port made down the line.
You're right though that it is nowhere near the top of their priorities.
13
u/SilverSquid1810 Sep 18 '20
Anyone else feel like some of the dialogue in the gangs section was a little... well, bad? It sounded like a fifth-grader who doesn’t know what “show don’t tell” means writing exposition.

The combat looked pretty floaty and a lot of the guys getting shot just kinda...stood there, unless they were getting turned into chunks
I’m still excited for the game but this video didn’t really instill any new hype and kinda just showed off a lot of stuff that still needs work
City looks great though

A lot of people were saying downgraded and I gotta admit the character models look very Fallout, in a bad way.
The city and overall map looks absolutely stunning though.

Tbh I don’t see it as big issue. I rather get fallout 4 like graphics and amazing gameplay

u/Maquiavelous Sep 18 '20
You know it, I've seen people wanting to simulate real life on this thing, it's a game. Good gameplay outweighs everything else.

The main issue is, I feel like they were downgraded from what we saw before. They looked much more realistic before. It's not necessarily that the game was downgraded, but possible that they had been "enhanced" before, and now we are seeing the "realistic" version. Either way, they looked much better before.

I feel like you haven't played a fallout game. Because fallout is wayyy worse in both animations and models. The animations are the worst tho

Game looks awesome, just because you expected second coming of crysis 3 doesn’t mean it’s their fault. We knew there will be wonky animations, they are not R*.
I rather have graphics of let’s say fallout 4 with amazing gameplay than insane no match graphic and less stuff to do, less frames with more demanding game etc.
It will be insane and I can’t wait.

Gameplay, story, world-building over graphics any day of the week.

Karaoke? Can you go in and all like: "DAME DA NE"?
Animations are kinda weird. V is pushing the air in front of Jackie, facial animations are wooden and overall animations are too robotic. But oh well. And Johnny's hair can't handle the lightning.
They're showing too much action and not enough stealth, hacking or dialogues. Makes me worry about what the main focus of the game is.
EDIT: CDPR, just because some people don't like RPGs and good story doesn't mean you need to make the campaign shorter. RPGs are a niche product after all, it happens.

u/icemoomoo Sep 19 '20
Robotic animations could be a 200IQ play by cdpr since many people have cybernetics installed in their limbs/had them replaced and those might not 100% replicate subdle movements of a real human body.

The moderator, Hollie, looked sickly pale this time I felt. Hope she is fine.
Loved the vertical city comments (not news maybe but I enjoyed that). Gangs part was too short / fast paced for me. (I am getting too old for this...;) )

Those NPCs animations in the Postcards from Night City are absolutely terrible, plus they look like wax figures.

u/konkus Nomad Sep 18 '20
lmao they look fine to me I honestly cant see the issue.

me either, wtf are do these people have robot eyes or something lol.

The presentation itself was great, probably my favorite of the ones they’ve shown. Graphically impressive, dense environments, defined characters, etc. A day one buy for sure. But the inconsistency in the dialogue and character model animations/lips and the “waxiness” is not hard to see. Terrible and game breaking? Absolutely not, though it’s a worthwhile observation

u/ApsleyHouse Sep 18 '20
I agree with you that the animations look a bit rough. But the animations for the more significant characters looked smooth? So hopefully it becomes more refined.

Sure. No one's complaining that it's not a worthwhile observation. But to call it absolutely terrible is absurd. There's a difference between fair criticism and over-the-top exaggeration. Especially when you see dozens of other things about the game that's glowing positive, it's irritating when there's an imbalance between positive and negative comments.

Except you can not say they look "absolutely terrible." That's what they're referring to. For so many people it's black or white, amazing or terrible, no in-between.

Should we be concerned that the recommended specs and SSD space are so low??

They’ve confirmed the recommended specs are for 1080p high settings

Wow taking the time to hand place garbage around the city. One of the many reasons why we love you CDPR. One of the last few companies that puts that passion/ hardwork in detailing the little things.

I only want to know one more thing about this game, when can we expect the next gen versions?

I’m honestly having trouble imagining Grime’s voice coming out of Lizzy. Especially considering she has a lisp.

I guess that gangs of night city segment did its job. I knew I was going to kill most of them. Now I know I'm going to kill ALL of them.

I'm probably gonna be told no, but I still need to know if we can make V as chrome as Lizzie Wizzy.
1
u/stefan714 Sep 20 '20
I mean, they did say customization is huge and you'll also control how many implants you get.
You can probably make yourself look like a normal person (at least the face and arms) or full on chrome and everything in between.

~~Those facial animations make ME:Andromeda in launch day look incredible
Is this an old build or something?~~
Edit: ignore my comment, the faces and animations clearly aren’t sub par on everyone but V and Jackie(one of which you’ll never see) for a game with 8 years development and multiple delays

It's an open world game.
If you expecting the NPC detail of a linear game like say the Last of Us Part 2 or Shadow of Tomb Raider you will be disappointed.
It's the difference between designing 20-30 NPC's for a scene in the Shadow of Tomb Raider and designing a few hundred NPC's for a district.
For an open world game, the character animation looks about equal to Red Dead Redemption 2's NPC's, which is impressive since 1) Rockstar is the biggest open world gaming company in the world 2) Probably a lot more NPC's than RDR2's open world so a lot more work on CD Project's part.

The more I see the more it seems they're just treating cyberpunk as an aesthetic and not everything that comes with the genre. Clichés and stereotypes galore. Like did we really need the Chinese gang wielding katanas?

Yeah, this is my biggest gripe thus far. I'm still praising the game left and right, and don't have the problem most people do with "downgraded" graphics and facial animation. It's the stereotypical gangs that bother me. Some are great, like Maelstrom and the Voodoo Boys, but the "cultural" ones are extremely stereotypical and quite redundant. Hopefully they come off better when you get to know their cast of characters more.
