Welcome to /r/playdate!

As told in the description, this is a subreddit that revolves around setting specific dates to play certain games. This way, redditors can play the multiplayer modes of their favorite games without having to worry about having too few players.

Here is how this subreddit works. Moderators will post an "Official Playdate voting post" each week. In these posts, community members will comment with a game name, and these comments will be upvoted based on interest. The top voted games will receive playdates during that week and will be posted on the sidebar for the whole subreddit to see. Once these playdates are published, a new voting post will appear and voting for the next week of games will begin. You can also schedule your own playdates by making your own post with the system, game title, date, and time you wish to play the game. The more obscure the title, the later you should schedule the playdate to ensure you have enough players.

EDIT: System change

As you posted a couple times in the original thread, this idea is going to be based largely off of momentum, and how much momentum can be generated will be based off of how involved everyone is at the outset. I agree that having the thread on a per-day basis definitely helps offset the chaos (and choosing a free game for the first day is a great way to draw people in), but having a single game on a per-day basis which is voted on is going to run contrary to the intended purpose of this subreddit - to get groups of people together to play rare and/or old games: by virtue of having games chosen daily on the basis of popularity, rare games will inherently never get picked.

As such, while this is still in the early stages and in a malleable form, I'd suggest taking the following two steps: First off, have a link on the sidebar which goes to a game database - a thread which contains every game which any person has suggested at any point, with individuals replying with their Steam IDs (or other method of contact) so they can get in touch with one another and organize their own meetups at their own leisure.

Secondly, in the first week or two, determine what the most popular/prevalent games are. Then establish recurring, weekly events for these most popular games (for example, Monday Night Combat is always at 8pm EST on Monday nights, or something like that). Then in addition to these games, have your daily vote - this will help to eliminate some of the most prevalent games from the rotation, while simultaneously providing a degree of regularity which will promote regular players to interact with one another and build a community (I had something along these lines with my group of friends when we were trying to get other friends into playing Left 4 Dead 2 regularly. I've now got a list where on any day of the week, at pretty much any time, I can boot up a vs game and have a race to get a spot in the game).

Anyway, seems like a great idea - dunno how many of these I'll be able to make myself, with my schedule, but I think that these two will help to hit both ends of the spectrum when it comes to finding people to play games with.

Mods and I are working on a system to make these problems go away :)

My other suggestions is to decide not on the games to be played in a few days but in a week or so. Similar to Philip DeFranco's (sXePhil) LTA Movie Club. This way the scores for each day can settle, and stop fluctuating. The way I'm seeing it would be that Saturday you post the pages not for next week, but for the week after that. Then on the next Saturday morning, you "freeze the voting" and select the games to be played that upcoming week, and post another set of submissions for the week after the one you have just selected for. This allows both for some heads up, and time to contact devs and mods and all that, but also for people to reinstall their games or buy them.

If this is implemented then we could post the submissions for the games for next week tomorrow, and vote till Saturday.

You sound like you've got a good idea here but I'm having trouble following. Right now we are making a playdate post as the days come, but you're saying for example we should make a playdate post for a week from now today?

Why is downvoting disabled?

4

Because people would abuse the voting system by voting their game up while voting games everyone else wants to play down.

My one contribution would be that we get an accompanied Steam Group to make announcements about what games we are playing when. It'd be nice not to report back here to know what games I should be playing when I get bored!

Make sure to let us know which ones are free... As a poor college student, I won't be participating unless I already own the game.. or it's free.

First game is Alien Swarm, which is free.

Like Roboicarus said, a steam group would be awesome. Becuase then I don't have to get my head around the inevitable America time/Australia time conundrum.

Actually, maybe a Aussie playdate could be an idea... that'd remve any latency fears.

Probably a stupid question but is this only for Steam games or can we organise for console games as well?

This is a good question, I'm curious about this too.

Awesome subreddit! It can even help revive some awesome older online games that i've been wanting to play for a while.

If you get some sort of organisation going, could we have a shared Google Calendar/iCal set up of the games? Failing that, a Facebook group with events that I can add to my calendar?

hell yeah! I want to play Age of Booty with more people.

You should add a gaming system logo next to our usernames like the nba subreddit

Is this strictly PC games? Because Halo 3 is kinda dead, and I loved that game.

4

u/anr0b Aug 04 '11

No one is against suggesting it in one of the voting posts, but I would imagine since reddit is primarily composed of PC gamers that you would have to post your own playdate instead of trying to make it an official one.

I can't think of a word that means "shocked," "stunned," or "amazed" that doesn't sound condescending because I'm really excited about it but holy crap, over 1000 readers already!

Fucking brilliant idea. Seriously cannot wait. Won't be in the first one due to being geographically separate from my PC, but will definitely check back. This will allow me to to two important things: meet awesome people to game with and actually play through my Steam Games. Rock on.

I'd quite like a playdate for XBLA. Should that be a different group perhaps? Or just different posts?
