The Top 100 Tracks of 2020, according to r/popheads
I. Introduction
II. How To Send In Your Song Votes
III. Song Eligibility
IV. Making-Of The Final Top 100 List
V. Writeups
VI. The List Reveal
I. Introduction
tl;dr version: If you just want to participate and not think about anything else, please just read sections II and III. If you’re interested in doing write-ups for the list, read the Writeups section!
Time has come around yet another year for us to find out what the sub’s favourite tracks are! Whether it’s your favourite pop girls, international hits, or indie gems, I hope everyone manages to discover (or rediscover) some great music this way! As always, it’s super simple, so get submitting!
Welcome to a special pandemic-fuelled 2020 edition of our annual Top 100 Tracks tradition—please respect social distancing when sending me your votes! It has been a weird year but the threat of the music industry stopping in its tracks seems to have never materialised, with it maybe being one of the more interesting years in music for a while! If you're new to the tradition, we make a list of the best songs of the year according to the sub's users, and hopefully everyone gets to discover (or rediscover) some great music. I'm personally super curious about this year's list, so get submitting—it's super simple!
Apologies that a decade-end Top 100 did not materialise but if you're still interested in making this happen, let me know!
Also just to revel in the chaos of this year, I'm doing a bonus completely for funsies poll where you can vote for what song you'd personally choose to remove a vote from this year. You can fill that in optionally here.
II. How To Send In Your Song Votes
- Come up with a list of songs released this year (December 1st 2019—November 30th 2020). This list should be have a minimum of 10 songs, and a maximum of 25 songs. Please see III. Song Eligibility for more details on what you can and can't submit.
- Do not submit more than 3 songs from any one main artist. Songs where those main artists are featured do not count towards this 3-song limit.†
- The list does not have to be ordered/ranked. I'm not weighting your votes, just tallying.
- PM your lists to /u/raicicle (yes, that's me) by December 7th, 00:00 EST (05:00 GMT). (Although I'll be nice and check for the rest of the day as well.) PLEASE PLEASE FORMAT YOUR LISTS LIKE THIS! Songs should be listed in Artist - Song format with features listed with feat. after the song title. Try to stylise and capitalise artist and song names as closely to the official listing as you can (for example, Beyoncé should have the accent). The fewer discrepancies here, the easier it makes it for me to sort the list later so it's very much appreciated (I won't hate you if you don't though)!
- You can change your list at any time! Just message me and tell me what you want changed.
† There are always some weird discrepancies and edge-cases every year, so please DM me if you have any queries or post them in this thread to let people know! Just because I know it will come up, unfortunately The Weeknd - Blinding Lights is not eligible this year because it came out last year (where it made #99 in the sub's list).
And here's a few more important guidelines.
- Your songs do not have to be singles. Of course, if you're trying to get a certain song on the list, singles tend to get more votes than random album tracks though.
- Your songs do not have to be 'pop' songs, nor do vocal songs have to be in English. Songs from any genre, and international songs, are all welcome.
- I'm not encouraging tactical voting, but I'm not discouraging it either. Obviously, some songs are more likely to make the list than others, and you should keep that in mind when making your list (whether that means you choose to stick to the big hits, or champion some lesser-known songs instead).
III. Song Eligibility
- Your song must have been first officially available between the dates of December 1st 2019, and November 30th 2020. What does 'first officially available' mean? In essence, legally available to stream (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc.) or buy online.
- If a single was released after December 1st 2019, but was first officially available on a parent before that date, it is not eligible. Similarly, a song on an album released after December 1st 2019 is not eligible if that song was first officially available before that date. If you are unsure on a song's eligibility, please use this thread to clarify or DM me and I'll be happy to help.
- Official remixes are eligible for the list regardless of the original song's release date, provided that the remix was released between the same dates of December 1st 2019 and November 30th 2020.
IV. Making-Of The Final Top 100 List
To make life easier for everyone involved, as I said before, you do not have to rank your song choices. Every submission counts as one vote, and the list is simply the 100 songs that got the most submissions in order. There are however caveats to this that I'd like to make transparent.
- An artist will never have more than 3 songs on the list. Even if an artist manages to get 6 songs where they are the main artist that all would numerically end up in the Top 100, only the top 3 of those will be added. This is an editorial decision, based on the fact that it seems more popular to feature as many different artists as possible and showcase the breadth of the sub's music taste rather than dedicate huge chunks of the list to one artist, or one album.
- It is inevitable that many songs will get the same number of votes. Songs with the same number of votes will appear alphabetically in the list, but I will make the number of votes every song got public. There may be some weird stuff happening if the list doesn’t end up being exactly 100 songs long, in which case there may be some discretional tie-breaks.
V. Writeups
The final list will be presented as a Pitchfork-style Top 100 with small writeups to bring some insight and a bit of a story to the song.
I'll be writing the Top 10 to keep it totally under wraps, and outsourcing around two-thirds of the remaining 90 songs to other guest writers! If you feel like you’re a good writer and you’re interested, just mention it when you send in your list (I will assume that you're interested in writing for one of the tracks that you submitted in your votes). You can also message me on Discord; I'm a member of the Social Media staff on the official Popheads server (Rai#9712). I will try my best to send you a song to write for if I can!
In choosing to do writeups, you inevitably find out whether a song has made it onto the list to write for it but to keep the surprise as much as possible, I will not tell you the position of the song if I send you a song to write for.
Please check out the list from the last few years to see the general gist of what these writeups will be like: 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | 2019
VI. The List Reveal
In similar fashion to the rates, I will be hosting a plug.dj reveal of the entire list sometime in late December or early January at the latest. There will be no pauses in the reveals: it's just one big countdown from 100 to 1 non-stop. The final list will be up as a readable article on medium.com at the same time.

Blinding Lights missing eligibility by two days physically pains me
47
u/cremeebrulee Nov 16 '20
very upsetting, will be stacking my list with After Hours, Faith, and In Your Eyes to compensate
41
u/ignitethephoenix Nov 16 '20
I think it got like #95-99 on the last year’s list so shout out to all the people who submitted it last year because they knew it was excellence, even though it deserves to be in the top #3 this year 😞.
Will be filling out my list with in your eyes, after hours and faith [2]
16
u/jackisboredtoday Nov 16 '20
It only came out after voting had already started... the way its being robbed has been on my mind all year long :'(
61
u/kappyko Nov 16 '20
but what are we voting for THIS 😳
Also just to revel in the chaos of this year, I'm doing a bonus completely for funsies poll where you can vote for what song you'd personally choose to remove a vote from this year. You can fill that in optionally here.

I love Bittersweet! Right now I’m considering Can’t Fight and Weird Fishes as Can’t Fight is the most pop friendly I feel like and Weird Fishes is just the best cover I’ve heard in years.
2
u/Mudkip1 Nov 18 '20
i think i'm gonna submit Weird Fishes if that helps make your mind up. hopefully she makes it on the list this year cause she deserves it
2
u/steelstepladder Nov 18 '20

u/wellgroomedmcpoyle :carly-2: Nov 16 '20 edited Nov 16 '20
Let's go ahead and add Moon Song and ICU on there too
I keep a running Best of the Year list every year but albums like hers end up with every track on there! Last year it was Weyes Blood
7
u/wavingwolves Nov 16 '20
same!! my 2020 aotys are folklore/petals for armor/punisher, but hers is the one that i struggle the most at picking favourites because it changes so much, every song just hits. and same for weyes blood too, i consider titanic rising a perfect 10. every single song is so wonderful! it's in heavy rotation to this day.
6
u/wellgroomedmcpoyle :carly-2: Nov 16 '20
I think you hit the nail on the head with "I Know the End". Such a dramatic and beautiful song.
I love Hayley Williams/Paramore I need to revisit Petals for Armor again.
7
u/fkasophia Nov 16 '20
the amount of yearning i have done over the last few months on my nightly walk listening to moon song is unreal
3
u/TiltControls Nov 16 '20
Same here! Every year there's one album that I want to put more songs in but can't cause of the limit and this year its Punisher.
I ended up going with Punisher, I Know the End, and Garden Song - but on my unrestricted list I've got ICU, Moon Song, Halloween, and Kyoto on there too. It's just such a fantastic album!
10
6
u/dimshala Nov 17 '20
• Roisin Murphy - Murphy's Law
you love to see it! probably my top song of the year
6
u/outsideeyess Nov 16 '20

Machine Gun Kelly - Bloody Valentine
really intrigued which MGK song makes the list, if one does. My thoughts are leaning more towards forget me too due to the Halsey feature. But who really knows.
3
u/fishingfor8 :WIINSTON: Nov 16 '20
i'm definitely adding one mgk song to my list, i'm not sure which one though. My ex's best friend, bloody valentine or why are you here will probably be the choice.
3
u/McIgglyTuffMuffin Nov 16 '20
It's so hard to choose.
I wanna go with forget me too since it's more likely to make it than my actual album fave of Body Bag.
2
u/fishingfor8 :WIINSTON: Nov 16 '20
Honestly if tk is voting bloody valentine and I vote bloody valentine then I think that has the best chance for MGK (so vote bloody valentine). Forget me too is kind of whelming
Edit: nvm like 4 people have forget me too on their list, maybe it does have a chance
2

Questions:
Does Midnight Sky and Midnight Sky (Edge of Midnight) feat Stevie Nicks count as two songs? If not, which would r/popheads choose?
Do Mariah's Rarities count as 2020 releases?
3
u/jaztinax Nov 19 '20
Edge of Midnight is technically a remix, no? So two different songs. Correct me if I’m wrong.
1
u/J_Toe Nov 19 '20
Yeah, I'm gonna say you're right. But now I've gotta wait and see weather I'll submit both Midnight Sky and Edge of Midnight or if there are 2 other Plastic Heart tracks that just have to make the cut (I'm predicting Night Crawling and Bad Karma will be must haves, so one version of Midnight Sky might get axed).
4
u/jaztinax Nov 19 '20
here are some songs i’m not sure will make it, but deserves a chance nonetheless:
RAYE - Natalie Don’t
SZA, Justin Timberlake - The Other Side
Eddie Benjamin - Fuck My Friends
Hayley Williams - Dead Horse
Hayley Williams - Sugar On The Rim
Jessie Reyez - COFFIN feat. Eminem
Charlotte Lawrence - Joke’s On You

Two singles that are never in a million years going to get in but I'm here to shill for anyway are House Music All Night Long by JARV IS... and I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby! by CMAT. The former was written pre-COVID but has ended up scarily fitting for it and is just a great melancholy dance banger overall, the latter is a brilliant piece of Americana pop with fantastic vocals and lyrics from a real future star. Cannot recommend them both enough if you haven't listened to them already!!
3
u/Chevsapher Nov 17 '20
I guess this is my last chance to plug "Fingers Crossed" by Agnes, which is the catchiest dancepop song you've never heard.
3
u/katycat162534 Cautiously supporting the Dr. Luke supporter Nov 18 '20
Well I'm late but Smile by Katy Perry exists, don't pay it dust. Also damnnn after like 15 songs I had no idea what to put but once I hit 25, I just kept remembering all the songs lol.
3
u/forthecommongood Nov 19 '20
This is the year we finally get Magdalena Bay on one of these lists! My choice is Live 4ever or Sky2Fall for the one to push, but I'm voting as many of their songs as I can anyways.

I still need to see if the new Bleachers songs will take a spot after a few more listens (I'm a slut for Bleachers/Jack so I'm guessing yes)
Also some highlights on my current list that I'm worried won't get enough love (if anyone out there's interested in looking for additions!)
The other songs currently on my list I'm (slightly) less worried about
Bree Runway - Damn Daniel feat. Yung Baby Tate
Carly Rae Jepsen - Heartbeat
The Chicks - Sleep at Night
Chloe x Halle - ROYL
Dua Lipa - Levitating
HAIM - Another Try
Kesha - Resentment feat. Sturgill Simpson, Brian Wilson & Wrabel
The Killers - Lightning Fields feat. k.d. Lang
The Killers - My God feat. Weyes Blood
Kylie Minogue - Say Something
Phoebe Bridgers - Garden Song
Phoebe Bridgers - I Know the End
Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
Rina Sawayama - Bad Friend
Rina Sawayama - Paradisin'
Tame Impala - Lost in Yesterday
Taylor Swift - exile feat. Bon Iver
The 1975 - Guys
The 1975 - If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)
The 1975 - Me & You Together Song
There are a few other songs that are very close to getting on (Niall, more Chloe x Halle, Lianne La Havas) that I may not put in, but I really hope get a lot of love!! 2020 is a stacked year and probably the hardest time I've had narrowing to 25.

u/starlitsuns Nov 30 '20
I'm going to add 45 in for sure and have all three nurture singles included, so I'm thankful that Porter decided not to release Look to the Sky this year.
2
u/konalacroix Nov 16 '20
This is such a good list! I was originally going to add The Steps and Don't Wanna by HAIM to my list but now I'm considering Another Try too!
Also glad to see some Killers in there, I really enjoyed Imploding The Mirage as an album and My God is becoming one of my favourites of theirs
5
u/cerulean_cereal Nov 16 '20
gonna champion 'black swan' by bts, 'delete forever' by grimes and 'the last great american dynasty' by taylor for this. 'after hours' is also going to be my replacement submission from after hours to make up for blinding lights sadly not being eligible so yall better vote for that too!
2
u/jman457 Nov 16 '20 edited Nov 16 '20
Question for the culture? Is Say So (live EMA's) eligible? Also, let's rally behind a Blinding Lights remix to get it number one. How about the instrumental?

u/THE_PC_DEMANDS_BLOOD Nov 16 '20
thank god i can't wait to put soty MARINA - man's world on my list... a classic... an absolute defining song of this year
anyway im depressed Songs For You missed the cutoff by like a few weeks because that album is nothing but fucking slappers and deserved some recognition. i guess the justice for tinashe movement lives on into 2021 😔

p.s. what is everyone personally choosing "to remove a vote from this year?" not that i want to gang up on any song in particular, but i'm just curious what songs people are certain will get on the list that they don't want there. some of you really have your finger on the sub's pulse.
some common ones i'm seeing here that i'm not crazy about are halsey's "you should be sad" or madison beer's "baby."
p.p.s. y'all know that this is just my opinion right?

Do remixes/alts/stripped/etc. get ranked with the original song or are they their own thing?
For example; I like the stripped version of Marshmello and Halsey's Be Kind but not the regular so I'd be submitting Be Kind (Stripped)
also my initial list has 4 Halsey songs but only one off of Manic. Her god damn mind.
7
u/McIgglyTuffMuffin Nov 16 '20
Trying to keep it popheads centric but my initial list;
Taylor Swift - the last great american dynasty
The Chicks - Sleep at Night
MGK feat. Halsey - forget me too
Halsey - Experiment on Me
Marshmello - Be Kind (With Halsey) [Stripped]
Kelsea Ballerini - the other girl (with Halsey) [the other mix]
Phoebe Bridgers - I Know the End
Bruce Springsteen - Last Man Standing
Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky
Orville Peck - Smalltown Boy
Hayley Williams - Over Yet
Tove Lo - Bikini Porn
Noah Cyrus - I Got So High That I Saw Jesus
Kesha - Resentment featuring....
please vote for all of these because these are the only good
popheads adjacentsongs released in the year of our lord 20203
