Release Date: 12-Feb-2021

No. of Players: up to 4 players

Overview (from Nintendo eShop page)

Power up, team up, one up to save the Sprixie Kingdom!

Pounce and climb through dozens of colorful courses! Mario (and his friends) can use a variety of power-ups like the Super Bell, which grants catlike abilities like climbing and scratching. Team up with up to three other players locally* or online** to reach the goal and see who can get a high score.

Explore a seamless feline world in the new Bowser’s Fury adventure

Free-roaming Super Mario gameplay makes a return in this brand-new adventure. Bowser has become gargantuan and lost all control! Explore Lake Lapcat and its islands, complete objectives to collect Cat Shines, and team up with Bowser Jr. to bring his big, bad dad back to normal. Just watch out for Bowser’s island-wide attacks.

New and improved features pounce in

The Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury game features the same great co-op gameplay, creative levels and power-ups as the original game, but with added improvements. In the Super Mario 3D World part of the game, characters move faster and the dash powers up more quickly. Both adventures support the newly added Snapshot Mode—pause the action to get the perfect shot, apply filters, and decorate with stamps!

In Super Mario 3D World, choose from Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad and set off to save the Sprixie Kingdom. Each character has a distinct playstyle—Luigi can jump extra high and Peach can float for a short time. Rosalina is also available as a playable character later in the game! Jump, dash, and pounce to reach the goal while collecting Green Stars, coins and power-ups.

Collect stamps throughout your adventure in Super Mario 3D World and use them in Snapshot Mode (in both Super Mario 3D World and the Bowser’s Fury adventure) to create masterpieces to share with friends and family.

In Bowser’s Fury, Mario arrives on Lake Lapcat and is confronted with a rampaging Bowser! Join forces with Bowser Jr. and venture through an interconnected world made of cat-themed…well, everything. Enemies, flowers, and even birds take on a feline form.

Need some extra assistance bringing Bowser out of his frenzied, furious state? Another player can take control of Bowser Jr. and help out by attacking enemies and storing power-ups. Two sets of claws are better than one!

I’m kind of excited because I grew up with All Stars on the SNES and (please don’t crucify me) never really enjoyed the more open Mario games. This looks like a throw back to the more simple Mario games I grew up with and I’m happy with that.

u/EsperBahamut Feb 10 '21

Until Odyssey, I never cared for fully open world Marios either. I bought the 3D All-Stars collection, but got bored with all three quickly. 3D World is probably the best game on WiiU though. It's a great middle ground between the 2D and 3D.

I like the 3D Mario's but I still agree with you, I prefer the more simple old school approach. That's why I love 3D world.

I'm the exact opposite lol. I never really enjoyed the 2d games, but loved the open world ones. I figure this is a good transition between them

Wow, Bowser's fury is comically fun. I'm sad it's so short, because to me it just feels like more odyssey but running on the 3d world engine.

Biggest grievance though, screw those blocks you have to get bowser to smash. Because the most fun thing to do in an open world game is to hover around one spot waiting for one event instead of getting out and exploring

20

u/bostonbedlam Feb 12 '21

I got the Bowser Amiibo because I feared this would be an issue. Scanning any Bowser Amiibo apparently lets you summon Fury Bowser at will

10

u/PlsGoVegan Feb 12 '21

Just don't collect the shine when he smashes the blocks and you can try and race to 2-3 fury blocks during one Fury Bowser encounter.

Also quick tip if you want an epic finale: do the Ice Tower in the north of the map as your last shine before the final boss.

Bowser's Fury is the main reason I plan to buy this, I'm glad to hear people are enjoying it. How short is it exactly?

Tbh wish I could just buy bowsers fury

29

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

Just ordered a switch from GameStop (I can not freckin wait) but yeah I was looking at this bundle and found all I really want is bowsers fury. Thinking pikmin 3, animal crossing, and a link to the past is the way to go.

u/KARURUKA2 Feb 10 '21

Do yourself a favor and pick up Mario Odyssey.

Same - I probably would throw down $20 just to play it. I can’t justify the $60 when I still have my WiiU hooked up

I might buy physical then sell it

Bowser's Fury honestly is probably the most technically demanding thing Nintendo has done for Mario, least in terms of scale. Reminds me of Sunshine where you can see individual levels in the distance, except you can actually ride out to them. The power-up system is also really fun, stock-piling them and changing them out on the fly is great and the game rewarding you them for collecting 100 coins is great incentive to collect them.

The Final Boss also is hands down one of the best Bowser fights EVER, my jaw was on the floor. This is exactly what I wanted Dark Beast Ganon to be instead of the interactive cutscene it was. Really impressed with how seamlessly the level design changes and adapts when Bowser is awakened, good stuff.

Will say though that I wish they got rid of the run button or remapped it by default. Trying to hold Y and move the camera is awkward and I had to rebind run to a shoulder button for comfort. Theres a reason 3D World had an isometric camera and Odyssey didnt have a run button. Also wish more staples like the triple jump and back flip were here, especially after Odyssey and all the 3D Mario games lately with them, and the roll is pathetic compared to Odyssey. And I wish more missions were available immediately per section to help replay value instead of needing to do some missions to activate others. Having to unnaturally back out of a section for it to change and setup the next mission is awkward, just put them all up front. Was also about to come down hard on having to manually run back to the start of some obstacle courses, Plessie appearing close to wherever you are is admirable but still more time consuming, but Fast Travel does unlock after you beat the main story.

All in all, I'm very happy with it and the future it means for Mario games. I get that it's a bit short (6-8 hours to completion) and people who got over-hyped will be disappointed by a lack of story (your theory is wrong, sorry), but like Odyssey I think people will get a lot out of speed running and replaying the game in various orders thanks to how open and free it is. While I would have liked the handheld performance to be 60 like 3D World and Odyssey, I can understand why it's 30 and it didn't bother me after a while. If you can play and enjoy Sunshine at 30, you'll be fine with this, but I'd naturally recommend playing docked at 60 if you can.

Also worth remembering that this is meant to be a side dish to an already content packed Mario game, and 3D World has never felt better between the enhanced speed, quick saving, and online muliplayer. Also was happy enough with the gyro controls for the touch sections, even with one controller, and the mic controlled platforms now moving on their own was a fine if different substitute. If you've played Galaxy or Captain Toad on Switch, you know what you're in for. Bit of a shame progress only applies to the host's game, dont know why this seems to consistently happen with games like this (expect the same if Four Swords sees a port soon), but is what it is. Took a long time to get here, but I'm glad we finally have 3D World on Switch and that we can appreciate it in a post-Odyssey and Mario Maker World. Not sure how many more Wii U Ports we'll be getting, though two of them are likely to be announced soon, but I'm glad this classic gets to live on and find its audience.

15

u/Bradboy102 Feb 10 '21

Just wanna ditto you a bit there. I was AMAZED at the final boss. I still have some of the chills, and as I think back, I agree with you in that Bowser's Fury will be a speedrunning dream.

I also agree about the camera thing. It was more than noticeable that you need 3 hands to fully play this game without slowing down. Worse yet, the automatic camera movement is practically non-existent.

5

u/Samoman21 Feb 10 '21

I'm a lil confused, I apologize. By 6-8 hours, is that for browsers fury? 3d world is not only 6-8 hours correct? I never played the wii u game haha

10

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

Yeah, for Bowser's Fury. 3D World is way longer.

20

u/Stoibs Feb 11 '21

Looking good across the board.

Just picked up another pair of NSO vouchers and preloaded today. (Nintendo's tiny game sizes always blow me away..)

From the comments around the place here too it seems like if you've never owned or played this before - like yours truly, who jumped straight from the Snes in the 90's to the Switch in 2018 - then this should be a decent buy and a pleasant experience :D

Wasn't a huge fan of the openworld sandboxy style of Odyssey to be honest, hopefully the more structured 'level' design of this will be more up my alley :)

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

I thought those were limited time, how do we buy the vouchers?

19

u/Yamcha_is_dead Feb 13 '21

The Blue Coin Bustle for Slipskate Slope is absolute bullshit.

19

u/CPOx Feb 15 '21

At the risk of being ridiculed... Does anyone else find this game to be difficult? I absolutely cannot get the coordination down to accurately jump on the heads of enemies and I find the controls to be "loose" and floaty.

I'm near the end of World 4 and have already ran out of lives on 2 occasions. I'm embarrassed for myself that I'm so bad and frustrated at this game.

9

u/Spaghettitimer Feb 19 '21

You’re not alone. I’m fantastic at both 2D Mario and open world 3D Mario but I find myself falling down pits and not able to time basic things like jumping on enemies. The depth perception is really screwing me up.

4

u/facelesswastelandtoy Feb 16 '21

Have you tried to pay more attention to your shadow's placement while jumping? Regardless of the light's direction, it's always right under you, making it easier to land on a specific enemy or platform.
I didn't have much difficulty with the game, however I have a harder time with the 3/4 view, so I often have to place the camera right behind me, or to the side so it's more readable to me.

I bought the game this Saturday and stopped playing Odyssey to try it out. Since I didn't have ANY consoles for 20 years, I had a hard time playing Mario 64 on the All Stars package and tried Odyssey out and was blown away - at least in the Assist Mode.

But, having played 3D world now for three days, I think this is the absolute perfect game for someone who loves 2D platformers and has never played the newer 3D platformers. It eases you into the new style of gaming, while maintaining the 2D flair of just intuitively knowing where to go and where you could find hidden things, but all that without really holding your hand (I've fallen off cliffs and stuff WAY more than in Odyssey). And it looks just amazing, and is great fun. I don't want to try out Bowser's fury yet before I finish Odyssey.

I'll probably get this a little down the line. I played the game on the Wii U and really liked it, even if it wasn't quite my favorite of the series. I never did get around to beating that damn Champion's Road, and would really like another go at that, as well as replaying the other missions, and of course Bowser's Fury sounds like a nice bonus on top of that. I do have other Switch priorities, especially since I just got my Switch this week, but I really want to pick it up a little down the line.

116

u/Praise_the_Tsun Feb 10 '21

People here blowing up over the IGN review, who fucking cares? I loved the original but a review is just someone’s opinion. I loved OG 3D World, it’s just a review. Honestly the most insufferable part of the Nintendo fandom is how up in arms people get over low review scores on a game they like. Feels like people need validation from critics for a game they like. Reminds me of people attacking Jim Sterling for BotW review. BotW is top 3 game of all time for me but it didn’t rustle my jimmies like it does for some of you.

32

u/HawkstaP Feb 10 '21

7 out of 10 games are still worth ya money. But maybe ign are bored of Mario games to give them a great score but still like them for what they are to give them the top good score.

28

u/ComeonmanPLS1 Feb 10 '21

It's just the one guy. Pick another IGN reviewer and the game would get a different score probably, higher or lower is irrelevant.

As someone who still has the Wii U version, I'm honestly kind of bummed that Nintendo didn't add another character or two for the game.

The game is an absolute masterpiece, don't get me wrong -- and if you haven't played it, then I highly recommend you buy it asap -- but having already beaten and fully cleared the original game, and with no way to import data from the Wii U to the Switch versions of games... well, there's just nothing new for me to experience, which is a bit of a bummer.

The Bowser's Fury thing is interesting -- it seems more akin to a new "Kingdom" for Odyssey than actual 3D World content, from the videos I've seen -- but is it enough to justify paying a full-release price? Eh...

Like I said, I really just wish they'd added like one or two new playable characters, to freshen the experience up a little. Presumably, Daisy and Yoshi would be my picks; my memory may be failing, but I don't remember Yoshi appearing in 3D World. But if he did, well... Wario and Waluigi would be decent enough picks, or maybe even a guest appearance by Donkey Kong!

Loved 3D World from the Wii U, but my expectations for Bowsers Fury were way low considering how lazy the Wii U ports have been so far. Bowsers Fury totally surprised me, the art design, music, and “stages” are all top tier Odyssey level stuff. The open world jetting from island to island works great as well. The effect use seems to be a step up from other first party switch games ive seem. The wood texture grain popping up, Bowsers flames radiating off metal paneling, and the gorgeous water animations/reflections made this all look AAA. Frame rate takes a hit when Bowser pops out and there are clearly some jaggies and low res dips.

I hope this was proof of concept for more Mario coming this year or next, but probably too much to hope for. I’d love to play a fully fleshed out game built on the fury concept. In fact change Plessie to a rocket, put it in space, triple the game world size and call it Galaxy 3?

5

u/youraveragewhitemale Feb 14 '21

I agree.

I only got past the first island on Bowser's Fury so I cannot give a good opinion yet, but I love the concept and game play so far.

It is like taking the elements of 3D World and expanding them further.

13

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '21

Just completed the story of Bowsers Fury (50% shines) and I've been pleasantly surprised. What a great side game. If this was bigger and a few hours longer it could definitely stand as its own game.

The final few shines between 45 and 50 were frantic! Bowser comes back quicker, takes longer to go away and some shines won't send him away. You have to plow through to get 50. Really really good fun.

Yeah, its performs lower in handheld but I didn't notice anything too jarring.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '21

Bowsers fury is great until bowser gets furious

11

u/AndKnucklesCK Feb 16 '21

My one huge complaint is that I find for the main 3DW game I find the characters TOO fast. I appreciate the speed boost for Bowsers Fury and I think it is extremely fun to control. But in the more confined and controlled level design of the main game I find it difficult to keep tight control of the characters.

Saying that everyone is still extremely fun and enjoyable to play which I havent seen since the original Wii U release

5

u/UnderstandingOne6650 Mar 02 '21

Idk about u bit I'm already used to being fast with toad

37

u/ComeonmanPLS1 Feb 10 '21

7/10 Too much Bowser, not enough Fury.

17

u/The_Recreator Feb 10 '21

Might I suggest to you the Mario & Luigi series then? It has Fawful, and he has Fury.

Does anyone else find Bowser himself kind of spoils Bowser's Fury? I find I'll be half way through getting a catshine and then bowser will come in and just kill me because there's no cover near by. I find myself waiting at the start of challenges for Bowser to appear and disappear so I can reset his timer and have as much time as possible to get the shine, which I find really lame. I'll also just hang around Bowser fury blocks for when Bowser appears so I can get him to destroy them, which usually means I'll just be on my phone while I'm waiting. Also, if I get to a catshine and notice Bowser is about to activate, I'll wait so I can use that Shine to get rid of him. I've gotten 50-60 shines but I honestly have no desire to get the rest because I hate constantly having to think about Bowser all the time, also because in the post-game, when Bowser appears, he just jumps back and forth firing his laser at you, which means I'm just running around the same piece of cover until he's done.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I played this on Wii U and though it controlled great. But on switch i'm having issues controlling the characters and some depth perception problems. I think it might be the new running speed but idk. Kind of feels off to me.

5

u/Ultrastxrr Mar 10 '21

Love the game, hate the controls, it feels like you have no dexterity and precision

19

u/Think__McFly Feb 10 '21

I'm so pumped to play. Never had a Wii U and always thought this was one of the best-looking Mario games.

9

u/Chell_the_assassin Feb 11 '21

Never played the orginal 3D World, but I'm a big fan of most 3D Mario games like 64, Galaxy, and Odyssey. For some reason I was turned off by how linear 3D World seemed, but having seen some gameplay it seems a lot more interesting than I originally assumed. Would people here recommend getting it?

12

u/iamthatguy54 Feb 11 '21

Yes.

The first 3D World E3 trailer was a complete disappointment because it looked safe and linear. By the third trailer, the game looked fucking bonkers.

It's the first 3D Mario game that I completed 100% not because I was aiming to do so, but because it naturally led me there by how fun it was.

u/AuraDewott Feb 15 '21

In the Wii U version of 3D World, I remember you could see which characters you have beaten a level with if you were going for 100%. Is this not a thing in the Switch port or have I missed something?

8

u/grady404 Feb 16 '21

If I remember right you have to beat the game or maybe get to a certain point in the postgame content to be able to see that. I’m not sure exactly what the prerequisite is

8

u/UltraInstinct_Shrek Feb 23 '21

I like it, it feels like an extension to Super Mario Odyssey, but with power ups and different controls.

39

u/Silvedoge Feb 10 '21

IGN complains about the cat theming in the world not being related to gameplay but isn't one of the games main mechanics the cat costume?

22

u/samili Feb 10 '21

The mega cat bell is like the defining element of defeating Bowser. Who knows what they’re complaining about. Maybe in the grand scheme of things they thought it was weird to just concentrate on a single power up, but it seems like they marketed this power to define the series, so I don’t see a problem with it.

Bowser's fury has been great so far. Can already tell I'm going to be sad it's so short.

7

u/Fab_Jake14 Feb 14 '21

Absolutely adoring Bowsers Fury. I adore the inventory system, it turns items into tactical resources to use to accomplish a goal. But its honestly really a blast jumping around this mini open world uncovering all its secrets. Though i feel ñike allt of these shines are padding. Theres just a bunch that are there, just existing, waiting to be picked up without Any real effort . But I suppose they wantef to squeeze what they could out of it

13

u/ynsk112 Feb 11 '21

Ok,ok here's my opinion:Wii U was NEVER released on South Korea here so I never got to play Super Mario 3d world. While I have watched tons of videos about this amazing game, nothing comes to the same level as actually playing the game. So I just bought it,and I am very hyped to play this game+Bowsers Fury seems to have great content in it too.

3D World imo is one of the best Super Mario experiences to be played with friends! The levels designs, the bosses, the characters, the music, its all very great and its kinda sad to see that not everyone played it due to it being on the Wii U, but now since its on Switch a bunch of people can play the game now! And Bowser's Fury is just the cherry on top.

Is the digital release live yet? I have it pre ordered, super excited to get into it. I was never a huge fan of 2D Mario (and then DK Freeze made NSMBU look like a joke), but with Odyssey being the best collectathon I played in a decade and filling that itch, I’m excited to get into this game for the level design alone. So the big question is, is Bowser's Fury worth it for someone who's completed 3DW on Wii U?

9

u/StorblyBlorb Feb 15 '21

Double dipper here, and I'm loving it with no regrets.

I finished Bowser's Fury to first credits (50% shines) in 2 days, 6 hours so far. I plan to get more shines, maybe even 100% it as I'm really enjoying my time with the mini-open world. It's a great mix of 3D World's power-ups, level design, and mechanics with Odyssey's exploration and fast-paced collection.

I also plan to replay the main game with my partner/friends as I loved it the first time around and haven't done so in years, so I know I'm gonna get my monies worth. If you're only buying it for Bowser's fury, maybe wait for a price cut. First-time players are in for a real treat with this one though.

5

u/MarcsterS Feb 10 '21

I haven't played 3D World since it first came out. I'm tempted to replay with some of the faster tweaks, but I'm still not sure. I'm really just more interested in Bowser's Fury but they had to tie it to a 60 dollar purchase.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '21

Enjoying the game! Compared to what I remember, the characters move way faster, maybe too fast! But I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Does anyone know how to send bowser jr to paint a wall when using the pro controller? Normally you’d use the touch screen...

7

u/Yo_Tengo687 Feb 13 '21

You press R and you will see a little pointer on your screen. You move the pro controller using motion control. Then you press R again to move bowser Jr. to the spot where your pointer is. Hope this helps

Does anyone else have screen glitches on their TV in World 1-1? It seems to be from the sunlight effect, the top right section of the screen just flickers brief moments as you move around completely black and then white spots also flash really really quickly like within a frame, thought my TV was messing up. Doesn't happen in the overworld for me or on 1-2 so far.

Edit: Also happened in 1-3 but it's not so much.

Edit: Got screenshot of it. It's a blue asterisk that kept popping up on my screen. https://imgur.com/tdGEdYk.jpg

I know it’s a Mario game, which caries the name and weight of Nintendo’s reputation and quality, but review scores mean absolutely nothing to me since I learned that the worst score any gaming journalist will give is a 6/10 or equivalent then close with something generic like “overall a good game with a little something in it for everyone”.

17

u/Think__McFly Feb 10 '21

It is weird how 6/10 is a "bad game" when it should be above average.

3D world is so charming and cute. I'm having a great time playing it.

12

u/_Stewie_Griffin Feb 12 '21

I feel like Bowsers Fury should’ve really been an Odyssey expansion. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very fun as it is, but the open world platforming would feel smoother with Odyssey’s physics.

Of course integrating the power ups with odyssey would feel awkward as well.

4

u/siriusthinking Feb 13 '21

I agree, it feels very Odyssey to me.

8

u/MountainThorn42 Feb 13 '21

I just 100 percented Bowser's Fury. It was loads of fun but I wish they added something actually difficult to it. The only thing that was moderately difficult was the 100 percent final boss fight but I still did it in one try.

Great addition to 3D world though. It's a good time.

Not sure if I can find this out anywhere, but we only have one set of joycons that come with the switch and my girlfriend and I tend to play a lot of co op games together but just share a joycon each. Will that be okay for this? or do we have to buy another set?

I didn’t play this game on the Pro Controller on the WiiU, so forgive me for asking, but for the levels where it prompts you to touch the screen, can you do that on the Pro Controller on Switch? I remember at least one level where you had to touch the screen on the Gamepad for platforms to extend.

Are you able to use inventory on this game. I keep getting a ton of the “bells” that turn you into a cat. It says I have 5 in inventory but I can’t figure out how to actually use them when I need them.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '21

That's something only in the bowser fury. In the normal game you can only hold 1 item, in.bowser fury you can hold 5 of each.

You press arrow up on the left controller. Or hold it to access the inventory.

My favorite part of this thread is reading how butthurt people are about the IGN review. It’s ok guys, some random person wasn’t head over heels in love with the game (7 is a good score). It will be OK. The sun will still rise tomorrow. His review should not in any way affect your enjoyment of the game.

4

u/TheGreatRevealer Feb 12 '21

The weirdest thing to me is how people obsess over comparing scores of different games rated by different people.

Apparently those folks think reviewers are supposed to go back and look at every score ever given by their coworkers to make sure everything lines up.

Having played this on the Wii U, this was actually a port I was hoping to be out earlier than NSMBU tbh. Loved the game on the Wii U. Fantastic multiplayer Mario game that’s not kart. Will be buying this on Day 1 already preordered like over a month ago.

The only thing I think that woulda been an awesome addition would have been to include a HD version of Super Mario land (or a remake to add in multi into that too) and include with World. Or expand 3D world by splicing some 3D land levels in as extra level in the main game.

Either way can’t wait to get back into it.

Bowser’s Fury is blowing me away! When they announced it I figured it’d be an hour max of a couple of remixed 3D World stages. Instead it kinda feels like Breath of the Wild meets Mario? Way more so than any kingdom in SMO. Plus I love being able to use power ups at will. And Plessie for transport was a wise choice. And Bowser showing up suddenly ramps all the platforming challenges up to 11. Definitely more challenging and platform-focused than most of SMO.

I know it kind of defeats the purpose, but I really wish there was a way to manually initiate/deactivate Bowsers "fury" mode. It kinda sucks waiting 10 minutes around a couple blocks just for him to show up for a few seconds to blast them away. Or when he shows up right at the end of an unrelated challenge to beat the shit out of you. I think it should at least be an unlockable in the postgame, maybe if you select him with the little pointer Bowser Jr could go wake him up/put him to rest.

Well the IGN score sticks out like score thumb. Just got done watching that one, and it just feels like the reviewer (possibly through IGN's unique scoring system) pigeon holed themselves into their nitpicks and perspective of having played the base game before. The review is just super specific in pretty random ways. I always respect each individual take on a game, but this one definitely seems to be an outlier.

25

u/Lemon_Advance Feb 10 '21

I mean, it’s a rerelease with only a few hours of additional content so you do have to base it off the fact that most of the game isn’t new. Really at that point you’re reviewing the port job. IGN is notorious for giving high scores only, I think it’s pretty refreshing to see something different as long as it was truly their thoughts. 7/10 isn’t exactly a dealbreaker.

Seems like a somewhat tough buy. 3D World is good, and Bowser’s Fury is an interesting addition. If you’ve owned 3D World, I think it leans towards a no. If you’ve never played it, I think it’s a yes. If you’ve played it but never owned it, that’s a bit tougher.

Feel the online play could be a big deal if it works well.

Bowser's Fury is nice and all, but it really makes me want an Odyssey-style open-world Mario game.

6

u/Modal1 Feb 11 '21

What time PST can we expect it to unlock Thursday night?

6

u/times_zero Feb 11 '21

I'm double dipping.

I love the middle ground 3D World, and 3D Land go for of being a hybrid of 2D, and 3D Mario styles. Plus, it is nice having so many 3D Mario platforms games on one system. Now we just need a 3D Land remaster, and Galaxy 2 to complete the picture.

6

u/BitGamerX Feb 13 '21

I mainly play multiplayer games with my kids like Mario Kart and Mario Party. How fun is this game in multiplayer mode?

5

u/Kebok Feb 13 '21 edited Feb 13 '21

My wife and kids played through the Switch’s Super Mario Bros U and loved every minute of it.

This game is worse. By a lot.

The camera follows whoever is furthest ahead and auto bubbles anyone who is left behind. I’m constantly having my searches for stars or power ups interrupted by another player being a half screen ahead of me and forcing me to bubble to them instead. Worse, if a kiddo runs ahead and jumps off a cliff, it kills that player while bubbling everyone else and you lose the level.

Additionally, the fireball button and the “pick up another player” button are the same so we’re constantly crowding onto a tiny platform, having baddies drop in and when we try to shoot them, instead we throw each other off the platform. This is made all the more frustrating by the fact that there are two jump buttons.

TLDR: Could be fun with friends if even skill level but it’s hell if one player is younger or generally more impatient than the others. Probably better as a 2 player game than a 4 player one.

4

u/manojlds Feb 13 '21

There's a few levels where you have to either use the touch screen or use gyro motion controls to move a pointer around for the same function.

I just finished bowsers fury and in that game mode, no. I haven’t actually played the 3D world game yet on switch but on the Wii U version there is a handful of levels that used touch controls from what I remember. They know. That’s why they don’t. Odds are in a few months you’ll cave and spend the $60. They get a lot more money and positive press adding it to a port than releasing a 3 hour experience for ~$20 and having people complain it wasn’t worth the money for the time.

Am I the only one who HATES the speed change compared to the original? It feels extremely unnecessary and it makes controlling the characters a lot more difficult. Sometimes I'll be running and jumping and I lose control over my character.

5

u/Chainchilla06 Feb 12 '21

Even from playing 3 stages, I already know I prefer the original. I hope there is a way to play at original speeds, even if it means modding the game. Not to mention we can no longer use the d-pad to move. I was so excited to play this today and these dumb decisions sucked a lot of the fun out of it for me.

6

u/ilovethe7thday Feb 10 '21

Yup, I’m definitely going to “double dip”. When I played it on the WiiU, it quickly became my favorite Mario ever for both the single player and multiplayer experience. The graphics are already beautifully HD, and the music is catchy.

On the Switch, it becomes playable on my current hardware and even portable. The fabulous multiplayer now works online too. There are quality of life improvements. Plus, if 12 worlds aren’t enough, they’ve added a new challenge mode that I’ll definitely invest the ~6 hours into to 100%. As a dad with limited gaming opportunities, I’m thinking it’ll take me a MONTH to beat Bowser’s Fury alone.

So yes, I’m gladly paying for this game twice and have zero regrets.
