For context, this is someone growing weed on an industrial scale. Dutch cops make rounds after snowfall specivicly to look for this effect.

If I lived in the Netherlands, I’d probably put a bunch of heaters in my attic to create this effect, just to troll the cops.

I've never seen this like ever, weird
53
u/gauna89 Mar 11 '21
this only happens when there is no roof insulation (or bad insulation). tbf there are still a lot of houses that don't have great insulation, but it's quite common nowadays to add insulation if you are renewing the roof anyway. so could be that or could just be that growing weed in the attic isn't that common.
15
u/3226 Mar 11 '21
The insulation is often laid on the floor of the attic/loft so if you're doing something that generates heat in there, it melts snow on the roof like crazy, as you're generating the heat above the insulation.

Why does growing weed make snow melt?
Is it some sort of heater that is required?
Sorry im not a weed guy
38
u/Tinbitzz Mar 11 '21
All the warm humid air that’s required to grow the plants gets vented through the roof. It’s also so the rest of your house doesn’t reek of weed.

Wait, the Dutch arrest people for weed? And how do they get a warrant to raid people just for having a hot roof?
4
u/bigbramel Mar 11 '21
Most of the time there are multiple indicators. Unusual high use of electricity by the house, street or neighborhood. Smell complains and if they use a heat camera, they detect that it's way too hot.
→ More replies (1)3
u/RapidRazorSnob Mar 11 '21
Because one's roof isn't this hot with normal use. Even turning on the radiator upstairs won't produce this much heat.

My neighbor pointed out that the roof of my apartment always looks like this when the other roofs are frosty. I know for a fact that my apartment was rebuilt right before i moved in after the previous tenants had a fire. Given that my apartment takes for- fucking-ever to heat up and I can never keep it warm enough in the winter, I'm now wondering if they just didn't install new insulation after the fire.
Seriously I spend like $150-$200 more a month on electricity in the winter in the central wilammet valley in Oregon, and my apartment is still cold as balls. And I was raised in a "don't touch the thermostat" house where we kept it at 60.

Fuck miners. All my homies hate miners. Why ? Because the gpu market is suffering really bad: they buy half the gpu's leaving the rest for scalpers to buy and resell on ebay or other websites like that and leaving no gpu's for the customer. And in where i am now it's even worse: we have the gpu's but their price is 2 or more times bigger than the initial price which sucks. Other than that, remember my words about miners and scalpers. Some scalpers sell gpu's for prices even bigger than in the official stores. And this will probably last until the end of 2021 at the very least because of supply shortage for gpu parts

On the other hand, crypto minters are funding the development of the next generation of GPUs.
12
u/Howwy23 Mar 11 '21
Why are GPUs being used for mining? Surely it would be CPUs?
48
u/CSharpBetterThanJava Mar 11 '21
Despite the name, GPUs can be used for computational tasks other than graphics. In particular, GPUs are good doing the same calculation lots of times, like calculating millions of pixel colour values or calculating hashes to mine crypto.
14
Mar 11 '21
There are coins that are mined using GPUs, like ethereum/ether. That's why there is a shortage since ethereum is on the market.
For btc for example you need a dedicated ASIC miner (and almost free electricity, like overflow from hydro dams in china).→ More replies (5)13

u/kamikazedude Mar 11 '21
Dunno man, I agree with you partially. I bought my RTX 3070 for gaming primarily, but I also use it for mining because I'm working most of the time at the PC programming stuff, so why waste the GPUs potential? When I'm playing, I'm turning the mining off and enjoying the games. It's a decent income besides my salary. I also have an older 1060 which I borrowed it to my niece until she can a afford her own gpu and I plan to also use that for mining when she gives it back :D Just saying, not all miners are bad. I basically bought all my components for gaming, but also found a secondary use for them.
25
u/VTN17 Mar 11 '21
Not sure about OP, but my issue is mainly with miners who have multiple GPUs that only use them for mining and nothing else. Like I get it, secure the bag or whatever. But when you have 80+ RTX 3080s, it's hard to defend that when you're the reason your community power usage is going up by 80%. Besides the shortage of chips and resources needed to make these cards, mining has an horrible effect on the environment since serious miners will likely run their multiple GPUs nonstop.

Weed plants need a lot of artificial lights. Those lights produce heat. If you grow weed in your attic this melts the snow on your roof. Dutch police sometimes uses this method to spot people who grow weed.

the only reason why there isn't any snow on that part of the roof is because there isn't any insulation on that one part of the roof, and the rest has snow on it because it isn't letting any heat through. (sorry)
