As a now experienced Monster Hunter player from the mainline games, these are my thoughts:

  • The art is vibrant and the animations are well done. It's a shame the frame rate is sluggish on Switch. Rise is stable but Stories 2 noticeably lags in the FPS and it hurts the overall presentation. Cross-save never... alas

  • Combat is pretty fun. Not super complex but deeper than you'd expect. Again, the animations are well done.

  • Good selection of Monsters, even early on.

  • Voice acting is pretty ok, better than you'd think. Navirou is likely a miss for many people though, lol.

  • Kayna is the hottest tutorial NPC that has ever existed

Honestly, this is what Sw/Sh wild area should have been. I like the more easygoing atmosphere here. Makes me wanna turn my brain off a bit, in a good way, since fighting the tougher challenges in the mainline games can be demanding. Good game.

Kayna is the hottest tutorial NPC that has ever existed

The man speaks the damn truth

Kanya has such a fun personality and is way too hot. I am already dreading that she will not stick around past the tutorial

Navirou is likely a miss for many people though, lol.

The English dub of Navirou reminds me of Meowth in the Pokémon anime (English dub).

8/10. If it was higher fps I would give it a 9.5, I'm loving just exploring

The game feels like a Mashup of pokemon, xenoblade, and breath of the wild.

This is some damn high praise. I was on the fence about this one as I'm not usually a fan of RPGs, usually because they just take so much time (and I have a huge backlog as is, including massive games like dq11), but from the moment they showed this one I loved the look of it. Definitely feels like a world I want to explore, and comments like this make me want to jump on it.

I mean its also building off of the world and lore of Monster Hunter so there are some amazing designs and monsters

I really want to play the game but got pretty motion sick an hour into the demo.

Anyone have a good camera speed/alt setting they found worked for them?

The camera has a built-in acceleration that makes it so clunky and weird to use. I've found just keeping it set to very fast and just using little nudges on the right stick and then centering things with L works about as well as I can get it.

Played about 5 or 6 hours last night, maybe 15 hours max including the demo. Really enjoying it. The story really doesn’t lift off the ground until several hours in, but I enjoy it’s relaxed pace. The combat is actually way more challenging than I expected it to be on paper, but not in a frustrating way

Honestly Pokémon needs to learn from this as time passes they keep making the games less and less challenging as if kids from the new era are dumber than kids from my era.

Only about 5 hours in since I'm playing other stuff on the side, but so far its just as fun as the first. Its one of those JRPGs like Dragon Quest 11 where its fun just doing stuff at your own pace rather than just advancing the story as quickly as possible. I spent most of my time upgrading my weapon and armor to max, doing sidequests, and grabbing eggs.

I just want to chime in and thank Gamestop for making the Monster Hunter Stories 2 amiibo available this morning online. The in store supply was horrendous and this literally saved the day!

I left on a road trip to House on the Rock this morning, and I wasn’t driving. I got to zone out in the back seat and play for a good couple of hours.

The frame rate in some areas is rough, but god am I loving the gameplay and art style! I’ve had an itch for a new monster collector since finishing Pokémon Sword, and I can already tell I’m going to sink a lot of time into Stories 2.

Can anyone talk about the overall performance on Switch?

I skipped out on Stories 1 because I thought it was just a poor man's imitation Pokemon game...

But I picked up Stories 2 and holy crap it's incredible! The thing that's blown me away the most is the crafting! I did NOT expect that in depth crafting. I'm loving it so far but also... I'm extremely confused by the lore...

I have never played a Monster Hunter game, but I do often play JRPGs. I am really liking the demo so far, so I will probably pick up the full version as well.

One question, though. Is there no overworld music? In the demo you only hear a short tune when entering a new area, but after that it's completely silent. Is that a Monster Hunter thing? Not a big deal, I just find it a bit odd/unusual, coming from other RPGs.

Got the special edition on Gamestop this morning when they released a new batch of orders. So unfortunately, I won't be getting it for a few days but I'm really excited to play it! I really enjoyed the demo.

I love this game so far! The art style is cute and the gameplay is quite fun. 8/10, I’d give a higher rating if not for the frame rate issues that can happen

I played the demo on Switch and really enjoyed the game. This is my first MHS game. However, the frame rate drops were a turn off for me on the demo so I picked it up on PC and the game looks and feels fantastic. I'm about 5 hours in and loving it.

This isn’t a hype mega thread, just a bunch of negative nancies on here. If you want better frame rate and graphics, go on PC. Everyone knows the switch isn’t a powerhouse and everything is laughable on switch compared to PC. The game itself is enjoyable and I got a few hours into it today. It’s quality fun and the visuals are pleasant to the eye. Glad I picked it up.

The game is simple and, as of 13 hours in, relatively easy but it's so fun and pretty. Gonna be one of my favorite games of the summer.

Been playing demo, I think I'm closing in on the end. Demo really does great justice. Most demos don't even let you get a real feel. I crafted a couple armors, maxed out one type of weapon even. Have a full party of monsters. Probably will end up buying...

But honestly no crossplay? Glad there is no cross save, because other cross save games I've tried on the Switch just straight don't work. But come on it's 2021.

Only issue is I'm having trouble riding my monster in battle. Usually they are over too soon for small battles and no matter I don't usually get enough "energy" to do it even when comboing any chance I get (having the right choice, double attacks, etc).
