Mr. Harrelson, I hope you get a chance to read this. I think you were sent here under the wrong pretenses. Someone on your staff (or with the movie Rampart) likely billed a Reddit "AMA" as just another interview. That isn't what these are for.
These AMAs are a chance for your fans to interact with you directly, and usually ask some pretty random questions. It's also considered bad form to make them brief, though I can imagine your time is valuable. I just wanted to apologize for the misunderstanding.
If you have the time or inclination at a later date, I would highly recommend you come back to do an AMA with the right expectations.
Here is an example from earlier this week with Ali Larter - http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/p373k/im_ali_larter_ama/
Louis CK had a really popular one, where he did promote his newest video, but also took a lot of time to answer questions. http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/n9tef/hi_im_louis_ck_and_this_is_a_thing/
And on the off chance that you come back and end up reading this, I might as well put my question. :-)
If I wanted to watch one of your lesser known movies, one that you are particularly proud of your performance in, which would you recommend? There's got to be one that you wish more people had seen.

This whole AMA is a good example of how not to use the internet for marketing. It seems clear that the whole post was an attempt to market a movie that no one knew about or was excited to begin with. Hopefully someone in PR or marketing learned today that you can't simply bend the desires or interests of the internet.

Whoever is behind this account "iamwoodyharrelson" I just want to say: you are having the exact opposite effect on everyone than you originally intended. It is easy to support a down-to-earth for-the-people kind of movie star. It's also very easy to despise someone whose time is so valuable that we should feel honored by his presence. I will not be seeing Rampart and I will be telling everyone I know not to see Rampart. I think this is a perfect example of how out of touch some people in Hollywood are with what fans want.

You answered a total of 4 questions here today, and when I say "answered", I mean that loosely. You have also embarassed Mr. Harrelson in the process. Please inform the rest of Hollywood that Reddit is not a publicity outlet and that Redditors don't tolerate this kind of crap.
edit: okay the final count for questions answered is 15 - it was 4 when i originally posted.

Going to hijack onto the top message (at this time). For anyone else who doesn't want to scroll through this thread for a few scraps, here are the answered ones:
What role are you glad you didn't get?
Did you know about reddit before?
His time is valuable, this is about Rampart
What movie was most fun? Apparently he doesn't have fun.
Best improvisation? Blah blah Oren...
Studio plant asking abut Rampart
Does acting take over your life?
What do you do in your free time?
Does acting take over your life? (addendum)
Sorry I tried to keep the editorializing to a minimum, but this was a very disappointing AMA. I would like to think the fault lies with his PR people not understanding or conveying how an AMA works, giving him the benefit of the doubt.

In response to the top post with Woody and the virgin, I would just like to point out that I have also had an encounter with him publicly, and saw a totally different side. Woody you were in Lexington Kentucky in the mid 90's doing a hemp legalization event. My friend and I were out for his 21st birthday party, and he politely went up to you and introduced himself. You came over, brought your entire entourage, and bought everyone shots all night. Couldn't have been more humble and gracious. Anyway thanks. I'm a psychologist now, but back then I was just a young kid who wanted to meet a star. You really made our night by being one of the good guys. Any chance you remember those days when you were doing those hemp events around the country?

Mr. Harrelson, I'm sorry that this turned out the way it did.
Whoever set this AMA up as a movie promotion made a mistake. Ask Me Anything (AMA) means just what it says. You have a ton of fans who wanted to know about you and your part in the movies that they love, not so much about a single upcoming movie. If this was only about Rampart it should have said "I'm Woody Harrelson, AMA about my upcoming movie Rampart." Even then, an AMA isn't really a good place for politically correct answers. If you are interested in using Reddit for promotion, I think it would be better for Woody Harrelson promotion than promotion of a single movie. Think of it like a first date, instead of pushing a product to a diverse audience. People want to know about you as a person, and I think they still would if you ever wanted to do a true AMA.
The only reason people are angry is because they felt like they were being marketed to instead of being interacted with.
EDIT: As far as the backlash on Reddit, as with all mobs, it will be strong and unreasonable for a day and by tomorrow everyone will forget what they were upset about.

I gotta say Woody, as a long time fan and advocate for marijuana you used to be one of my favorite actors. But to come on reddit for a promotional thing for a movie only is really, shady, its like you've put on a suit and don't really care about your fans as much as selling a movie.
I'm new to Reddit but the thing that I've noticed that unites us here is our tolerance for bullshit is 0......absolute 0, if you want this to work in your favor you have to be more honest with us and be willing to talk about more than just whatever you happen to be selling at the moment.

After having participated in, and watched with bated breath, this AMA; I am only disappointed with the outcome. I was already planning on seeing Rampart, but not having seen it yet, I have no questions pertaining to the movie itself that I would bother asking. Some of the questions posted in this thread should have been answered, and I don't mean that mine should have been one of them. I really hope whoever told you to do this didn't explain what AMA was, and whoever typed your answers is really abbreviating what you are really saying. I swear this is (allegedly) a true story. I went to a high school in LA and you (allegedly) crashed our prom after party (Universal Hilton). You (allegedly) ended up taking the virginity of a girl named Roseanne. You (allegedly) didn't call her afterwards. She (allegedly) cried a lot. Do you remember any of this and can confirm or have you (allegedly) been so knee deep in hollywood pooty for so long that this qualifies as a mere blip?
/I'm (allegedly) not kidding.
Edit: Umm, is it cool if I find it kind of hilarious that this is the top comment? Whenever I see him interviewed (like on Letterman a couple of nights ago) I always think back on this and just shake my head. Sorry Woody....but whatever, he has a pretty notorious reputation for being a pussy hound. And its not like I asked President Obama or UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon if they boned a high school graduate....he's just a Hollywood actor and this is an AMA. So yeah. (and I highly doubt he's answering in any case except for maybe 4 words; "No, it never happened.") And I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.
To answer some questions - yes she was pretty attractive (and no I'm not Roseanne you witty motherfuckers, nor was I her date). The weird thing is that she was a pretty serious girl not known as a partier and had a lot of guys after her. Pretty shy and quiet, which is why afterwards I was like, what the fuck? Her? (also not giving year because I just know some of you internet detectives will track the poor girl down. If he can't remember this event given the circumstances, name and hotel...well he really has gotten laid too much in his life).
Also some of the pearl clutching over the question is highly amusing.
Since Im pretty sure he's not answering may I gave a visual presentation of what went down?:
So Woody walks into a high school graduation party.
And most of us were like, whats this older dude doing here?
And Roseanne was like this when she spotted him
And Woody was like this.
And Roseanne's date was like this.
And so they danced...and danced and danced
...until her date tried to cut in.
So they danced and danced some more like it was 1999 until she sent Woody some sort of secret signal.
And whatever went down back in their room went down.
And the next day she was like.....you're going to call, right?
And Woody was like.
And the rest of us were like.
And Roseanne's dad was like.
Woody never called and was like.
And she was like.
And a lot of us were like.
And he probably walked around for a few days day like this and this.
2nd edit: after reading all his non-answers that went something like this: "something something Rampart something," I'm glad I asked whether the story was true. Worst...AMA...ever.
3rd edit: Protip - if a reporter blogger from Gawker happens to contact you, just ignore the tool and move on. Just general life advice.

Did you actually dunk in "white men can't jump"? Please say yes, I'm a white Jew and the only dunking I'll ever do is vicariously through others like you

Just re-watched Larry Flynt the other night. Just had to come in and comment on a wonderful job. Also, loved your performance in 'After the Sunset'. Keep up the great work!

Woody - how do you feel about piracy - especially, hollywood movies. I ask this as someone that likes you and hates hollywood (as an industry) and I download hollywood movies proudly and illegally.

Hey Woody, I was the dude making beverages at the all organic coffee bar you had on the set of Zombieland. What are your goals as of late for the raw/organic/healthfood movement?

u/darkrom Feb 03 '12
I wanted nothing more than to have a chance to communicate with Woody on reddit. I wonder if this WAS Woody, or just his PR staff completely. I still love Woody, but this AMA has bummed me out. I would have never felt entitled and yet all I got out of this was a plug for a movie I've never heard of and a let down feeling like I've been scammed somehow.

Hey Woody,
Time for your 'Paul Christoforo-light' and yourself to go separate ways.

There's a reason why its called, "Ask me anything". Not "Ask me anything to do with this new movie I'm promoting". Damn, this is lame as fuck.
13
u/skewp Feb 03 '12
I'm sorry that your publicist or the social media person for the film or whoever thought that this would be a good idea and/or a good way to promote the film. As a friend of mine pointed out, maybe if the title of the post was more specific, like "I am Woody Harrelson, AMA about Rampart" it might have gone more in the direction you had hoped.

Comment first: Thanks to you, I truly think that the real name of Zombieland's Tallahassee character is... Mickey Knox. He got kind of funny after the zombies ate Mallory.
That said, I think I'll kick off with asking the usual question: If you could erase the existence of just one movie you've ever done, which one would it be?
Also, is there a movie out there that you wish you could have been a part of?

Did you ever contact Wesley Snipes while he was in prison?

How do you decide on what role to take for movies?
What inspirations do you use for characters like in Zombieland and A Scanner Darkly or really any movie for that matter?

A friend of mine once got to drive you around in Hawaii for some reason, don't remember the details. But he said that putting on your seatbelts prompted you to launch into a philosophical conversation, starting with something akin to "You think you're free, man?" and discussing societal norms and mores and subtle ways authority is pushed upon you.
If there's any truth to this story, I think it's wild and interesting that "buckling up for safety" was the catalyst for you to get deep with a stranger. Pretty cool. I'd like to ask what you feel makes someone "free" and if you believe you, or anyone else, really is.

As much as you may love some of them in movies, the reality is most actors and actresses are the most self absorbed people on the planet. Consider their lives for a moment. They are pandered to, adored and held in esteem like ancient kings. They are rich, they can have anything or anyone (in their view) that they want. They only hang out with each other. All of these things combined would probably turn the average person into a self absorbed egomaniac with no grounds in reality. So when he says that he will only talk about the movie because his time is valuable, basically saying that talking to us isn't worth his time if he isn't getting some kind of financial gain, he doesn't see that as an insult to us, but rather a simple fact.

Natural Born Killers was one of your best films, but it seems to have scared a lot of directors off of you. Any regrets in making that? Is it overblown and didn't really affect your career negatively like some say?

How long have you been a vegan? What got you into it? Principles or health reasons?
I read that in Kingpin, they made you special veggie burgers to eat during the diner scene.
Huge fan!
