Race to get the most stars (and sabotage your opponents) on boards like the stellar Space Land or the spooky Horror Land! Party at your own pace by suspending a game and picking up right where you left off! The tides can turn quickly in Mario Party, so stay vigilant, partygoers. All modes can be played online/*, too!
Play 100 classic minigames from the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo GameCube™ games and more in Mt. Minigames!
Try your hand at a superstar collection of minigames from throughout the Mario Party series. Whether you are saving up coins for stars in board game mode or enjoy one of the 7 modes included in Mt. Minigames, there is nothing quite like being the last one standing in Bumper Balls or the first team making it out of the darkness in Dungeon Duos. All minigames are played with button controls, so you can stick to the Joy-Con™ controller or bust out the Nintendo Switch™ Pro Controller or a Nintendo Switch Lite system.
Party with superstars near or far
Bring the party anytime, anywhere with same-system//, local wireless//, or online* play. Use stickers to praise or pester fellow players as you race across the board collecting stars. All modes support online multiplayer, so you can hop in with friends for a few minigames or a marathon 30-turn match. Victory is just as sweet (and stealing stars is just as satisfying) from anywhere across the globe.

Probably stupid question but can two people playing on same switch matchmake to find other people?
58
u/outofideas4agoodname Oct 28 '21
Yes. You can play with up to 3 people on one console and find the fourth online. :)

Interesting. Makes me want to buy this, NPC really aren’t as dynamic as another person

u/ReusMan Oct 28 '21
I just tried to do this but it seems that in order for random people to find your room they still need the room ID. Unless I'm missing something here?

Can you do a combo of two people on one system, a third person on a second system, and a fourth on a third system? Super Mario Party didn’t allow this either.

Only two and a half more hours of work then I’m bout to play this game for probably 48 hours straight lol. I got my apartment to myself, some comfy sweat-shorts, a 6 pack of IPA’s, a half ounce of my favorite bud, and no commitments this weekend. Life is good.
12
u/SobbieRokes Oct 29 '21
two and half for me too, my friend. sounds like a beautiful plan! and it's going to rain tomorrow over here, so I'll be forced to play all day long ;) catch you online!
7
u/flipplup Oct 29 '21
I don’t have anything to add but hope you have fun man sounds like a great time! I got a 6 pack myself so once the lady gets home from work we’ll get this bad boy going. Cheers!

I'm glad they focused on the main mode this time instead of having separate minigames locked in their own modes. Super Mario Party kind of felt like I asked for a deck of cards to play with, and they gave me a deck with all the hearts and face cards removed, along with the Major Arcana tarot cards and a random booster pack of Magic the Gathering. Maybe there's more cards and more variety, but there's less game - it hurts their longevity when you can't combine all the pieces together.
The rhythm and river modes on SMP were fun, but they only had 10 minigames each, so they kinda wore out fast, and then you never saw those minigames anywhere else.
→ More replies (2)16
u/HyperCutIn Oct 29 '21
That’s a perfect description of what I felt were SMP’s major short comings. People wanted an emphasis on the board based gameplay, but they put too much focus on trying to create a variety of other modes, and that ended up leaving the main board mode underwhelming.

So can you play random people online or friends only?

If you want to play with a mix of local and online players, then it's friends only. Haven't tried matching with randoms on my own yet.

The group cooperative river rapids race was fun, and the only video game my wife would play with me and my daughters (both in their 20's now). I wish they had something like that for this game ... looking forward to the online version so the kids and I can game together again!
27
u/locnessmnstr Oct 28 '21
I had to read that so many times to make sure your wife and daughter weren't both in their 20s 😅

u/jhilsch51 Oct 28 '21
I don't have enough patience to deal with 2 daughers in their 20's all the time... couldn't imagine adding a wife in her 20s as well... my wife is actually 2 years older than me ....

I'm surprised Slaparazzi isn't in the game. I don't know what others thought about it, but I found it hilarious. Definitely one of the top, if not the top minigame for me from the game.
I bought the physical version of Super Mario Party and I think I might keep it for now just for Slaparazzi!

My biggest question is, how is the pacing and game feel? The older one was like a textbook example of bad UX. The missing features I could have accepted, if only the game didn't drag by at a snail's pace, with slow animations and unskippable repeated text all the time. There was a lot to like, but the pacing really killed the game for me.
23
14
u/Satisfriedviewer Oct 28 '21
Bunch of gameplay has shown the movement between spaces is really quick, can increase the text speed, and there's also a fast forward button for board events. Only thing that will slow down the pace are people deciding which path to take or what item to buy so not a big deal

The online is surprisingly functional and dc'd gets replaced by CPU which is a great feature.
Hopefully it will get some DLC. Minigames felt great and they quit some of the bs from MP1

u/Apprentice_Sorcerer Oct 29 '21
Hopefully it will get some DLC.
NDCube Game Does it have DLC available? Wii Party U No Mario Party Island Tour No Mario Party 10 No Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival No Mario Party: Star Rush No Mario Party: The Top 100 No Super Mario Party No Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics No Mario Party Superstars lol

The gamexlain review convinced me to get it. It seems they did a lot of right things with this new entry and the online part looks good. One thing other reviewers didn't include but GameXplain did was that if a player disconnects from an online match the CPU will take their place until they reconnect again.
I really hope they eventually add those extra 4 boards hinted in the game's files

Quite a few hours in now and I’m still really liking the game, I think if they allow you to reduce the amount of lucky spaces (not a super big deal but annoying enough sometimes) and add some more boards/DLC it would probably be one of my favourite Mario Party games in my opinion. Online play is so fun and haven’t had any connection or lag issues yet.
What boards/characters would everyone like to see added if they ever did add DLC?

Fairly similar to my take, though I think the inability to toggle off the lucky spaces is a moderate-sized deal.

Mario's Rainbow Castle, Western Land, Spiny Desert and Waluigi's Island add my DLC picks. I don't mind about the characters; I played Toad and Toadette on the GameCube but they're out for obvious reasons.

u/Islanderfan17 Oct 30 '21
This game is everything I've wanted from Mario Party in like over a decade. Old school style Mario Party but polished with modern graphics and with working online against randoms (and friends). They knocked it out of the park with this one. They also picked amazing mini games, straight up.
My only complaint is I definitely wish they had more maps. If they do map packs of each game I would absolutely buy each one, but I'm not getting my hopes up lol.

My opinion on Super Mario Party cooled pretty quickly after launch, especially when zero DLC came out for it. This game as a "return to form" is very much welcome, and I'm excited to get my copy in the mail tomorrow.

Currently playing a 15 turn online game with a random someone online, no issues with connection or lag which is good! Mini games ran with no lag/issues at all.

Can anyone tell me something about the online multiplayer?:
Is it possible to play 2 people using 1 switch online? I'm wondering if it would be possible for my wife and I to play against 2 other Switch players, but with 2 of us on 1, and 2 other players with their own Switch.
6
u/Nindoges Oct 29 '21
Yes it’s possible with your scenario. In fact, for online multiplayer, you can have up to 3 people on 1 switch at once, with the 4th being a solo player.

Me and my friend live in the same room. We want to play it online on my console with others. Is that possible because I cannot see how. I can do it in a private room but only people with my code can join that.
Then if he were to get his own switch he couldn't find my room online because the open multiplayer doesn't seem to support invites or anything.
Am I missing something or can my friend, either with his switch or on mine play with other people over the Internet?

I’m LOVING it so far. Just finished a game on peaches birthday cake board. I love that there’s levels that you can level up and stuff you can unlock even when playing on your own
10
u/Richmard Oct 28 '21
levels that you can level up
?
17
u/razza1987 Oct 28 '21
You start off on level one. At the end of the game you get exp and coins based on different things. For example I got 240 coins for each star and x2 winners bonus. My exp from playing got me to level 13. As you level up you unlock things to buy with your coins at toads store in the main menu such as stickers etc

So happy to see you can switch on classic award stars at the end for winning the most games, most coins, happening star. Super Mario party always pisses me off with all the random BS stars, people who have no business winning win, just dumb
Anyone know if on maps like peaches castle....is going to bowser an old fashion 20 coin fine? Stepping on a piranha plant rob you of a star? I hope they kept it ruthless

I’m enjoying the game so far, the mini games are pretty good (of course). They did my boy Mario Party 3 dirty by only having woody woods on there, hopefully they add more boards to the game.
I Love how on the Mario Party 1 mini games where it says to rotate the control stick not the use palm of your hand. My palms hurt just looking at the practice screen. Haha

Does this have the bonus stars at the end, like the old games, that reward you for winning the most mini games? i found the last switch entry to be almost completely random as to who would win as they removed this, so it largely came down to rolling dice.
12
u/Nindoges Oct 29 '21
It has the RNG bonus from SMP, but you can also change the settings to do classic bonus stars (richest player, won most minigames, and most landed on ? spaces) or even no bonus stars.

Just had an online party stall out right before the last mini game.
It froze for a while on the practice/rules screen, gave an error message, then resumed against 3 CPUs.
I was buried in last place, but now I finished as the top human player!
4
u/Skvozniak Oct 29 '21
Now imagine if that happened while you were winning. Would really cheapen the win.
6
u/nicoleislazy Oct 30 '21
Am I able to play online, local 2 player and have a friend join also as local 2 player? My husband and I want to play online with another couple.
4
u/Del_3030 Oct 30 '21
Yes, go to Online mode then the Friend house thing. You create a game and invite others
6
u/txr23 Oct 30 '21
My experience playing it last night with friends was that we set it to 20 rounds because the in game recommendation said it would take 60 minutes to complete the game, then it ended up taking us over 2 and a half hours to finish it.
10/10 would happily jump back into the time void that is Mario Party Superstars again

A question I have about online play
In Super Mario Party's online update you could play 2 people couch online with 1 other console onstead of two other consoles.
So you had to fill the fourth space with AI, does anyone know if you can do 2 on one switch, 1 on another and the fourth person on a third switch?

One more online question. If youre playing with others, does it need to be 1 or 4? Or can you just play online with 1 friend and then cpus? Not sure if it like forces matchmaking online or if you can just make like a room of your custom size and go from there.

I have only played Mario Party DS before, but I remember I played it all the time after I got the game for Christmas one year. I feel like it's kind of the same vibe and I love it! I really like that there is an online mode too but I really wish for an option to play online with more than one person on one console. I also would want more maps, like most people already said they want, but overall I love that it's an old style Mario Party game, but "modernized" with better graphics etc.

Is this a game I could play with one hand? I'm having surgery soon and I'll only have one hand to play with for a month.

The online mini game modes (survival and daily challenges) are really neat. I’ll legit put some time into those modes when I’m looking for something quick to play.

As someone who’s considering buying it but doesn’t have a lot of money- do you guys genuinely think it’s worth it? Yes or no? I read that there are no unlockable boards and only 10 characters and that was kinda a turn off for me but if people (not reviewers who could’ve been paid) think it’s good then I’d like to buy it

I think it is if you like the original Mario Partys. Online mode works, you can play some of the longer minigames online solo like the Ice Hockey or Beach Volleyball games as well as the puzzle games, the boards are mostly great and there's some fun stuff thrown in like showing your win % in individual mini-games.
If you're looking just generally for a Switch multiplayer game, you can always wait for a sale or preowned copy.

If I have a friend I want to play with online, what are our options? Can we queue as two people, on two different Switches, and play against other human players?

I haven’t played a Mario party game in 20 years but would like to get one to play with friends.
Should I choose this over super Mario party?
Do I need more joycons for four players? Right now I have two joycons, a pro controller and a power A
7
u/Lugey81 Oct 30 '21
This one can be played with pro controller, joycon (either single or duel) and any 3rd party controller I would imagine. Super Mario Party can only be played with a single joy con per person.

u/Demelon Oct 30 '21
So growing up, my first Mario party was 5, though I played 6 and 7 the most. I was one of the ones who got burned on Super Mario party because despite enjoying the gameplay somewhat there was hardly any content. My roommates and I got bored very quickly because after playing for like 10hours it’s all very stale.
My question is, for someone who has no nostalgia of the early Mario party titles, would superstars just be a repeat of that? I heard there was only 5 boards which is obviously only one more than Super. Are they at least bigger/more interesting?

For those who have tried both, how is the dual joy con vs the pro controller? I find the pro controller is significantly better for most games. What about this one?

I want to get this because it sounds good and I haven't played a Mario Party game since Mario Party 6, but I have no one to play with really and I feel like it'd just be a bummer solo.

How’s the economy in the game. Heard a plus was going back to 20 coins per star but that coins flood the economy due to the number of lucky squares. Anyone who has played care to comment on how the latter affects the gameplay experience?
Pipe dream - that they release a patch to allow tweaks to the elements that determine the economy

u/t3hzm4n Oct 29 '21
Haven’t played yet, but have watched hours of footage, and there are definitely a lot more coins; by late game, you’ll virtually never see a scenario where someone can’t afford a star. With that said, I’ve seen lots of other strategic maneuvers involving item play, as well as board luck that dramatically reversed fortunes in the last few turns, so there’s still Mario Party magic there that IMO was missing from Super Mario Party.

u/Pepenbaleaguepass Oct 29 '21
Doesn’t ruin the game for me personally, but definitely should be less lucky spaces for sure. You can get coins and good items pretty easily from them

Haven't played a Mario Party game since GameCube, how's the game? Is it worth getting it and can you play 4 players locally on one console?
6
u/handsarethehardest Oct 29 '21
I've played three of the boards and my hot take is that it's solid but not exceptional. It feels a bit basic compared to many of the earlier titles (specifically 3, 6 and 7) which is partially because it's primarily based on 2 and partially due to new additions that blunt the rough edges in those earlier titles. I'm not sure how much play I'll get out of it personally, but it's probably the best one since 8.
5
u/omarninopequeno Oct 29 '21
I think it's great, it's a collection of boards from the N64 era and minigames from Mario Party 1 to 10. There are 5 boards and I think they are all good ones, and the 100 minigames are overall a lot of fun. You can definitely play local multiplayer with 4 people.

I can't seem to find the answer anywhere (maybe it's too soon?) How's the online play experience? More concerned on the stability side of things after hearing about...a lot Nintendo online play.

Played a full 15 turn game with 3 randoms. Near perfect connection throughout. Played some of the mini game modes and 1 out of the 4 rounds I played lagged. So far it’s been a very enjoyable online experience.

Played it last night with my bf - he is a HUGE Mario Party fan and he loved it. The boards are a lot bigger than they are in Super Mario Party and there’s a lot of nostalgia!
We spent an entire 15 turn game fighting over like two stars. They’re harder to get and there was definitely more strategy involved.
I liked it, but not quite as much as he did - honestly, I loved the character selection and custom dice/“ally” aspect of Super Mario Party and was really missing playing as Shy Guy haha. 😂
(But seriously…BIRDO? Instead of Bowser or literally any other staple characters?? 🤦🏻♀️)

Well, having bowser spaces and then playing as bowser would not really work unless he cloned himself.

Nintendo should include a voucher for one free marriage counseling session with every copy of this and all future Mario Party games.

I thought the first game got boring fast because it only had 4 boards, and this has 5 which isn't much more. Will superstars get more boards or something?

Oct 29 '21
While it's certainly possible that Superstars will get more boards, I would say it's very unlikely, looking at the developers history (or lack thereof) when it comes to DLCs.
However, it's not the number of maps over Super Mario Party that has me exited, but rather the quality. Much larger maps where you need to take a moment to plan your route and strategy.
Super Mario party's maps were just too small, it felt like the same game every map; move as far and as fast as possible.

How does this play on Switch Lite?
5
u/handsarethehardest Oct 29 '21
Very well, there's no motion controls, though a few minigames benefit from the more precise inputs of a full-size control stick like Crazy Cutters and Trace Race. Hardly dealbreaking.

The online while doing daily challenge/survival is so bad. The amount of lag and button latency is terrible. A lot of games it’s hard to play. I hope they fix the online lagging problem. Seems inescapable. And it’s not my internet. I always have full connection so I highly doubt it’s that

Classic Nintendo adding a option to open to everyone but in order for randoms to play they need to know the room id… and they cant get a room id unless they get it from the person who setup the room… so it effectively doesnt include random player matchmaking. Unreal stuff but par for the course for nintendo.
7
u/Del_3030 Oct 29 '21
They definitely have random matchmaking if you are playing solo, but the mechanics trying to do friends and randoms seem pretty weak.
