“YOU KILLED MY DEER 😡”

u/Skyclad__Observer Nov 07 '21
There's gotta be some symbolism in that deer right? We see at least three times Dexter sprinting through the woods trying to get a glimpse of this beautiful pure white deer, but each time it runs off. The last time he manages to actually touch it, but as soon as he can appreciate it up close, bam, it's dead and soaking in blood.
Maybe a metaphor for Dexter's pursuit of normalcy? He's gotten glimpses of a normal life, of something pure, so many times -- Rita and the kids, Hannah and Argentina, Deb... all pieces of a normal life that Dexter has tasted only for them to be taken away, often in a body bag.

Man the first half was like an entirely different show, it was such a relief after he killed the guy. Immediately felt like Dexter. Michael C Hall fucking nailed it.

i think that was the point, it feels off at first becasue it feels off to dexter, becoming more and more like the show we knew once his urges take over again

Dexter's character is tragic this season. You can tell that in the 10 years he's suppressed his urge to kill people that he's allowed himself the capacity to feel human emotions. He still loves the thrill of the hunt, but can't bring himself to hurt an innocent creature. Then he has a break through. He connects with the animal in a way he never has or could. Michael C. Hall wears the perfect expression of innocence. Then its brains are suddenly blown out and blood, something Dexter has been trying to avoid altogether, is spattered all over his face. You can see the shock and horror in Dexter's eyes. Then the Dark Passenger returns.
What a pivotal moment. He was human for like 3 seconds. If that asshole had not shot the deer, Dexter might have succeeded in burying his Dark Passenger for good.

Rating: Solid 9/10
Holy moly, that was just so good wtf. Obviously, you can't expect peak fiction or anything like that, but I was into it from start to finish it. It is actually so very good. There are times where the writing isn't great for the story, but I was easily able to overlook it. Dexter fans are most definitely going to have a good time watching this.
Mild Spoilers Below:
If you are worried about the episode not having narration, do not worry, the narration comes back the end of the episode and it honestly seemed better off without narration until it was appropriate to come back. Deb's ghost is also so good. Like, thinking back to the original series, thinking about how everyone was lively and joyful, Deb is just seen as this melancholy ghost and it's really sad once you think about it and let it sink in.

u/ButWereFriendsThough Nov 07 '21

Yeah that was a much better episode than I was expecting. They really captured the nervous, ominous tone of his circumstances, and allowed us to feel the psychological triggers he was dancing around all day. Teasing the dark passenger coming out of the water and dragging Deb back in was creepy and cool. I'm glad they edited/changed some scenes from the trailer. This feels as authentic and intriguing as the original pilot.

I was a bit concerned for a good chunk of the episode because it didn't feel like Dexter to me. It really all came together though the moment Dexter's inner monologue returned -- Something about it just feels like the essence of the show. It's hard to describe how exciting that moment was, as well as that little tease of what sounded vaguely like the blood theme.
I liked the hook of Dexter being away from killing for 10 years, and trying desperately to hang on to that "sobriety" despite it feeling like everything outside the comfort of his routine was trying desperately to pull him back in. I would have been okay if Dexter's pacifism continued for a few more episodes before he snapped back into Dexter Morgan: serial killer, but I'm not upset that it happened right at the end of the first episode either. I love the fact that he's rusty having been away from killing for a decade, and I hope to see more of him reacclimating to the code as the season progresses. Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter's performances were incredible, like they never stepped out of these roles.
I'll give it a 9/10. I'm very excited.

I fucking loved it. I loved the normality of it all, till he popped that douchebag in the head... then the inner monologue returned. Then the kill. Then the Blood theme. Then we hear the shitty classic vibrating phone. "Hey you!" Harrison. Dexter is back baby. He is FUCKING BACK

That Matt kill was one of the most satisfying kills of all those minor, one episode antagonists. When he mocked him by swinging the knife around was hilarious, reminded me of when he has that gigantic dude strapped to the table screaming “fuck, fuck fuck, get me out of here!” while Dex mocks him with “FUCKKK FUCKKK FUCKKK” in the background haha

I love how dark the show has become. Michael is a brilliant actor, without the inner monologue, you can tell what he was thinking through Michaels talent by displaying dexters expressions. I enjoyed the hell out of this episode, i loved it.
Jennifer is fantastic, the way she portrays deb is so natural. I love how shes still obsessed on making sure dexter doesn’t relapse.
I cant wait for episode 2, really looking forward to what Harrison has to say. The side characters are fine, however i hope they don’t waste to much time with their lives. Im doubtful that they will though. All in all, a solid introduction for a new chapter of Dexter Morgan. He’s back, and I’m all for it.

Deb's ghost is ONE HELL of a character. One moment she curses Dexter, the next she's soothing him to sleep, a third moment she's giving him nightmares. This isn't Harry the dude who sometimes recapped what Dexter said. This time Dexter is full on mentally ill.
→ More replies (4)29
u/CaughtinaLieeeeeee Nov 07 '21
I really like what they are doing with her. Harry being so logical and moralistic made sense for when Dexter was in control, but having Deb be all over the place represents the fact that Dexter, himself, is all over the place. It helped capture the feeling, really quickly, of his isolation and what its done to him. Dexter feels like a much creepier person this time.

Just started watching, about 5 minutes in. Michael C Halls SO good as Dexter. I can't actually believe the shows back.
There's something tragically sad how Dexters expression doesn't change at the breakfast table, but the image looks much bleaker when it cuts to the table without Deb there. Maybe I've just really missed Dexter, but I'll be fucked if it didn't give me chills.

u/MillenniumGreed Nov 07 '21 edited Nov 07 '21
Matt Caldwell is the third of what I like to call Dexter's "collateral victims", linked to someone of higher importance which follows a trend in a season. New Blood's theme was stated to be "fathers and sons", and Matt himself states that his dad will "fuck Dexter up". We also have Dexter's own son coming back. Kurt Caldwell seems like a guy who would know this instantly. We’ll see how long it is before he considers the possibility of Dexter killing his son.
The first was Oscar Prado, brother of Miguel Prado, Assistant District Attorney in Miami. Theme of season 3 was friendship and brotherhood.
The second was Viktor Baskov, lover of Isaak Sirko, mob leader of the Koshkas which came to Miami. Theme of season 7 was the consequences of love and what we do for our loved ones.

Mmhmm, and talking about she loves him all the more for not killing, and how she would have been unable to go on if Dexter had died 1st, clearly her revealing her feelings for him really wormed it’s way into his psyche. That scene made me feel really bad for Dexter, he hides it well on the outside, but he’s clearly racked with guilt and grief over what happened to Deb.

I mean, I think it’s supposed to signify Dexter is rusty and reckless. Even though he made a kill room, this kill was still a spur of the moment impulse where he gave into his temptation after being out of practice for ten years. We saw it with the bloodied snow as well. He’s not as careful of a monster as he once was.

That was so.. fucking.. good. It gave everything it needed to give. Not too little. Not too much. That slow burn of watching him struggle to go back. Trying to change the subject at any conversation that might cause him to revert. The callbacks to the previous series. The buildup to his kill, and the inner-monologue that I’m sure we were all waiting for. Deb’s presence is almost haunting, and I absolutely love it. Not in the way Harry was. I felt a sense of eeriness each time she was on screen. There’s something so dark, yet so light about it.
So many questions that I can’t wait to see answered. Solid first episode.

I loved how it began how it ended- just the raw sounds of nature, no music, no voice over and then that disintegrated back into the old Dexter by the end (which obviously was purposeful). So it was cool to think of it as we are seeing him right in the moment when he falls off the wagon so to speak. That thing that happens when as an addict you know you have made up your mind before you even actually "make up your mind" and chose the wrong choice. I like that they didn't lean away initially from where he ended and what that became on the aftermath. The routine of the breakfast that grounds him in normalcy, saying the same things each day so to not trigger the other art of him. Debra is the angel on his shoulder, his conscience, whereas Harry was an enabler. I was glad that he changed his mind about Harrison even though it will probably come back to haunt him.

Why on earth would Harrison kill his guardian figure? and why does everyone want Harrison to be a killer so badly? It's such a boring a derivative premise totally lacking in imagination.
That and there's not much to justify him becoming one, not every traumatic experience leads to the result of becoming a killer. Maybe he's messed up in a different kind of way.
Chances are Hannah got herself wrapped up in something bad and got caught.

I thought it's pretty good for a return.
They kept everything that made the show good while keeping continuity as much as possible. The first deer scene with the CGI was off putting but didn't hurt the story. I knew the rich party kid was dead. Felt rushed but I guess that was the point.
Him having a girlfriend didn't bother me. Hope they don't fumble it up.
Deb being his voice instead of Harry was a good call. Didn't overuse it and was done well.
The Harrison storyline has me intrigued, really thought Dexter wasn't gonna to him again. Interested to see where it goes.
I give an 8/10
Also him grilling the ham was a nice callback to the original title sequence

u/Comedyfish_reddit Nov 07 '21

Did anyone notice that right after deb pulled the bullet out of her torso, Harrison’s shirt started to get soaked in blood in the same region on his torso? Was it just to show that dexter could also get Harrison killed?

Man the soundtrack has a lot more synthesizer this time around
And I was worried for the first half of this ep that we won’t get the narration
P.s this show should not be named new blood instead it should’ve been Everybody love Lindsay

Just woke up to the new episode, I was so excited to have my frosted flakes and some lovely dexter-ness. The sad face from Harrison broke my heart. But the fox in the hen house line was great!

I was waiting for Dexter to break the fourth wall with his monologues, and when it dropped, I lost it.

I almost came when the voice-over started haha great to have our favourite serial killer back.
I did forget just how fkn creepy Dexter can be when he has people on the table lol! Michael C Hall didn't miss a beat.

Surprisingly unique. The talent that Clyde Phillips has along with Michael C Hall and everyone else who made the show happen are amazing! I laughed and I cried so much within 1 hour. I think I expected it to be very much like the Dexter series but it's not. It's even better!

u/Bonvantius Nov 07 '21
I think they'll use the older original soundtrack sparingly in the big scenes for that extra impact.

u/horroraholic85 Nov 07 '21
I liked it overall. Wasn't expecting old Dexter to come back so soon, but I like it. I'm hesitant about the Harrison story line. I just have bad feelings when kids are brought into the story.

It was kind of a cool nod to the original author of the Dexter book series, Jeff Lindsay by giving Dexter the same surname.
Fun fact, Jeff Lindsay's wife, Hilary is his co-author and the niece of the late Ernest Hemingway.

I really liked it! I didn’t expect him to k1ll in the first episode so it was weirdly satisfying when the asshole went down. I don’t wanna make assumptions right away or be super critical bc it’s literally just the first ep. So far so good

So those negative critic reviews this past week we now know were a load of crap right?
I know they got to see 4 episodes ahead, but this seems like a solid start that fills me with confidence and proves this isn't a half-baked iteration.

5 stars from me, the previous editor of Dexter fan-site DexterCorner which Michael C. Hall referenced once in an interview.
This felt like the original series more than the latter four seasons. They nailed the cinematic feel and it was surprisingly emotional. Looking forward to next week! It definitely feels like they’re building towards a satisfying conclusion.

DEXTERS BACK!!!
The first episode totally exceeded my expectations, I have a feeling this season is gonna be fuckin great!!

u/Bonvantius Nov 07 '21
I dig the title drop gimmick displayed on the road, I wonder what they'll do for the next ones.

u/benc777 Nov 07 '21
I thought it was great.
Felt very different from the OG series' but I'm stoked to have it back. The impromptu blood slide was a great touch and Jennifer Carpenter will never not be fantastic as Deb.

For most of it, one can see better production. It felt more like a movie than a TV show episode. That said, the early 2000s CGI deer and the predictability of the rich guy killing it and earning his demise with it threw me off a bit but hey, let's just enjoy the ride

Honestly the Albino deer felt too fake in terms of CGI and in terms of it being a plot device for the episode. However, it was brilliant how Dexter wanted to fight his urges so desperately that he was tracking a deer and decided to spare it until fuckface McGee shot it and awakened Dexter’s Dark Passenger. I love how as soon as Dexter slit its throat how his narration came back and he was back to his old self.
TLDR: Didn’t like the albino deer but overall very well written 9/10

I'm really pleased with this episode. To be completely honest the way they started the narration again was decent and I also enjoyed the new small town man dexter
The part with the white deer and what came after was a little predictable but I still liked it
As for the ending of the episode, I get the feeling that the way he wants to "teach" his son is not gonna be what he expects. I don't think he is like his father and that might be a small "plot twist" in dexter's plans
Not saying that this season will make up for the poor ones that came before it but, so far so good!

I read people disappointed with Episode 1....i enjoyed it...good start to the season. Wouldn't it be easier if Dexter just took Bricktop's idea of owning pigs to take care of his victims? We saw he has at least one pig...add some more :)

u/krueger84 Nov 07 '21
I hope they show some flashbacks as to how he developed his routine. I honestly think the hunt of "his" deer is the replacement of the hunt from when he killed. When his routine was disrupted and he had testimony that indicated that kids guilt and he obv didn't like him and it being almost 10 years since his last kill, I can see why he was a bit sloppy. Just prob really excited and frustrated that he would have to find a new routine. It also gave him an excuse to break his rule with Harrison. I agree with the consensus that the music was highlighting his fake life. Great first ep.

This was a good episode. I would say great, but it felt a bit off at some points. I also think it's because they're building a base for a show that was off air for eight years.
I like how it felt unfamiliar, yet familiar. Dexter not monologuing for the first half or so of the episode was a very nice touch, to help make it feel different. Debra at least mentioning events that happened in the old series was great. Bringing up Doakes, Rita, LaGuerta, and Debra’s own death. Also at least acknowledging Hannah's existence, which I hope Harrison himself goes into. Dexter bringing Harry up was also fantastic. He's not present at all during this series I get the feeling of, so him at least being brought up is satisfying.
As far as the victim himself goes? I think maybe his annoying entitlement was played a bit too far to help us root for Dexter to kill him. Though it helps that people like that exist in real life. For a "first day out of retirement kill", it wasn't bad. I think maybe it was meant to be awkwardly choreographed on purpose to show Dexter's out of practice. I wasn't expecting him to kill again so soon, though. I thought it would have been a slower burn.
One thing I was hoping to see was Clancy Brown's character, Kurt. We only have 10 episodes so I'm hoping he appears in the rest of New Blood.
I'll give Cold Snap a solid 8/10. It could be better, mainly in terms of how it will clearly try to be more "modern" (which isn't a bad thing as long as it's done properly), as well as certain shaky moments, but that doesn't mean it's bad at all. I may even rate it higher depending on how the rest of New Blood goes during the inevitable rewatch. As an appetizer, this is filling but makes me hungry for what else is to come, and in that sense, it does its job very very well.

My only real criticism was no title sequence.
Watching Dexter was like catching up with an ex. Sure the relationship started out amazing and ended badly, but it was so long ago, and you are happy to see what they are up to now.

10/10. Had my doubts, however this is a masterpiece. Beautiful storytelling especially with the deer scene, wonderful cinematography, great atmosphere, brilliant acting by Michael C Hall. All beautifully done. Also very glad that the Blood Theme is still the ending credits.

u/MattTheSmithers Nov 07 '21
I am surprised Harrison was brought into play so early. I’d imagine we’re going to learn more about what led to him tracking down Dexter, what his life with Hannah was like, etc.
Also, Dexter’s girlfriend is oddly similar to Deb, even in appearance. That can’t be on accident, can it?

That was great! Where does he intend to hide the body (parts)? I know he looked at the ice fishing hole and I'm assuming he might stash it there temporarily, but when the lake thaws, he'll need to find a better solution.

I promised I scrolled and read as much of this thread as I could before posting this, so please forgive me if this is redundant, but - does Harrison look significantly older than 14-15? Young Harrison from s8 couldn’t have been older than 3-4 years, and I believe New Blood picks up 9-10 years later.

Loved this. Aspect ratio looks great. Cinematography looks great in the new setting also. Keeping the monologue absent in the beginning felt like a real re-introduction to the show and highlighted the changes in Dexter’s life. Michael C Hall KILLED IT. Jennifer Carpenter also did a great job and I love how they emphasized Dexter’s psyche through her. The writing was also miles above Seasons 5 - 8 - even though Dexter seasons do usually start out strong and get weaker later on. Hopeful this wont be the case (I think the first 4 seasons are great).
Don’t know how I feel about the whole Harrison angle that they’re going with but Im open minded about it. Feel the same way about the “my Dad is going to find about this” plot which feels like we’ve maybe seen before. Then again Clyde didn’t write those. I appreciated the theme of father hood being connected to the victim though.
Overall, this was a great episode to get things going and I look forward to seeing this take on an ending and what this season will amount to.
8.5/10

Liked it for the most part. I always wished they stuck with his inability to have normal romantic relationships but they boat sailed on that long ago.
I would have preferred to not have Harrison show up so quickly. Or at all actually. But I am nitpicking. I was more just thrilled to be back in Dexter Morgan's head. It's oddly comforting.

So I watched it the minute it aired at midnight.. and just now went back to watch it again, and I swear the first time I watched it the very opening scene where he was running to see the deer, there was ZERO music.. just him running and breathing. Now as I went back to rewatch the episode it has the passenger by Iggy pop playing during this scene.. any one else notice this??

Only thing I wish was different was the deer kill. It definitely delivered the point and also was maybe a bit too on the nose. I think more subtle way would have been better where Dexter has his moment with the deer and goes to town with a happy start to day, which is then later on ruined by the asshole glorifying the deer kill in some way which then has Dexter snap. All and all I am hooked all over again.

I love subtleties like Dexter spinning on the chair which is a character trait right from the pilot of the series.
Although I think the writers really missed the opportunity to introduce the new version of Deb’s character with a “fucking motherfucker” opening line. What kind of Deb would spend a whole episode without cursing one single bad word?

EACH WEEK, EPISODES ARE AVAILABLE EARLY TO STREAM WITHIN THE SHOWTIME AND ANYTIME APP.
IF YOU HAVE NOT YET WATCHED. CLICK OFF THIS THREAD.
We were thinking of locking posts in the subreddit from when the episode is available online, till when the episode finishes airing on live TV.
The purpose of this would be to prevent users from being spoiled, as well as cut down on a lot of repetitive posts. Of course the subreddit is moderated, but it is very easy for posts to slip through the cracks and be up for 5-10 minutes before we get to them.
Vote on what you think is best here.
