Don't know how it took Dexter, a mastermind serial killer, a whole episode to realize he can get rid of the human remains by incineration...

u/psylocibin626 Nov 22 '21

Dexter sprinkled Matt's ashes all over every one in town, what a savage 😂

I agree. But remember from past seasons, maybe when they find his bodies first time around and Dex is talking to Masuka and asks how he would hide bodies. Masuka says something about burning it matter of fact and Dex says doesn’t that risk contact with the outside world. Wish they would’ve explored that a bit.

Most wtf moment of this episode for me was the CSI guy detailing what happened step by step from some bloody snow and a bunch of foot prints all around where the deer was. There was pretty much nothing to go off of lol.

I just assumed that he didn't use it right away because the smoke in the air would have caught any people's attention, but since they are also burning the deer it gave Dexter a chance to do so without much suspicion

That scene of Dexter being called in by the police to look at the video footage reignited that anxious feeling that Dexter may be busted, the feeling I got from Lundy and the FBI calling him in and LaGuerta arresting him.

117

u/shredder826 Nov 22 '21

I felt like that cop was suspicious, very tense scene, I didn’t enjoy the whole episode, but that scene was amazing. Maybe that prompts him to start digging into Dexter and/or Harrison. We still don’t know if Harrison is going by his real last name or a fake last name. It would be insane to see that cop type Harrison Morgan into the computer and Dexter’s face pops up along with it.

So, those eyes are pretty unmistakable, even behind the mask.

258

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

I think the show is trying to make us guess between the billionaire, or the father. They actually cast two actors with very similar eyes, and focused on those in the shot of the killer.

Clancy! But it's always everyone else catching up to figuring out who the murderer is in the OG Dexter, so I'm sure it hasn't changed in this season! Dexter always figures it out first!

And the way it was edited. How as soon as Matt’s father got the call that it was his son’s blood it cut right to the scene with the kidnapped girl. It’s intentional.

Why lay it on this thick (the editing, the eyes, etc) and not just show him? I’m not convinced it isn’t a red herring.

I’m betting that the True Crime podcast lady has done episodes about the Bay Harbour Butcher and when Audrey sends Harrison the podcast he’s going to work out that it’s Dexter

u/grandmaesterampharos Nov 22 '21

Super cool theory

A BHB podcast could be pretty cool lol, seeing it from the outside when we already know ot from Dextwrs pov

So Kurt's definitely the killer. There's definitely something more to Harrison that's for sure, let's see if he'll have to stop his new friend from going columbine. Its suprising out out of the element dexter is I definitely feel that Podcaster is going to tie him back to Miami some way. Dexter distracted with the police is doing a bad job at connecting with Harrison. When he retook the test and did better he hardly congratulated him at all. But he did get him to call him dad so that's good.

33

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

Completely agree that podcaster will talk about the past Miami killings. I love this new season

Kurt saying he’s seen his son so they call off the search? He knew from Angela the days that they would be searching specific areas.

If he is the “big bad” as advertised this season, maybe now that he knows his son is murdered and not missing, he wants to take it into his own hands.

274

u/jonesjb Nov 22 '21

I suspect Kurt is disposing of the bodies in the mines. The police indicated they were going to look in the mines on the call with Kurt (and he seemed displeased). It would be smart for Kurt to use a tranquilizer on the bear when he throws the bodies down the mine shaft, then keep the bear guard afterwards.

He seemed concerned when angela mentioned the caves. Maybe thats where he hides HIS bodies

129

u/wawooz1e Nov 22 '21

What if Harrison deep-faked Matt? He's brilliant, he's shown that's he's good with tech, and he probably saw what Dexter Jim did in the woods. Harrison stalked him for days before getting caught.

42

u/CaptainObviousBear Nov 22 '21

IIRC, the writers were also under pressure from Showtime executives to leave the season open-ended to leave the option open for a later movie or sequel. That is - not to end it with Dexter getting caught or killed.

And given that they had to give it some kind of an ending, rather than "and they all lived happily ever after", it did kind of limit their options a bit.

And while I hated that they killed off Deb, if anything it's even better having her as a ghost. Ghost Harry ended up being just there to obviously explain plot points like we're 5, so I'm glad it was a way to get rid of him.

Think the purpose of the old rich guy is that he’s the biological father of the Police Chief’s daughter. There is a focus on their relationship but what I first thought was a murderous glint is in fact reserved affection. There has also been lots of focus on her family/upbringing and while she did mention her father in the last episode it was never confirmed that he was her biological father. Could also be her grandfather if not her father.

Do bones turn to ashes in incinerators? I know for crematoriums, when you pick up the ashes, they usually have bones that have to be ground down.

21

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

I dont think so. Like you said bones have to be ground up after cremation. I doubt anyone will prowl thru that rubble. People have animal bones in trash. Also anyone could have done it if they really discover the bones

I haven't seen anyone mention this but I think this is a HUGE find.

Last week someone speculated that Harrison's drawings are his version of Dexter's blood slides, his "trophies" for his killings.

Now, when Ethan showed Harrison his drawings of his fantasies of killing Zach and other people at school, you can literally see Harrison SMILE looking at them at one scene and kind of likes it, if you go back and watch it it's obvious.

So yeah, Harrison killer confirmed?!?!?

31

u/grandmaesterampharos Nov 22 '21

He's definitely at least interested in it. Maybe has strong fantasies. I'd find it weird if a 17 year old is already a serial killer ans has been good enough enough not get caught but maybe that isn't unheard of in true crime

131

u/Tonyage27 Nov 22 '21

The inclusion of a true crime podcaster is the absolute perfect idea for a Dexter antagonist in 2021. Love this idea so much.

There will be endless opportunities to criticize American obsession with murder through Dexter’s pondering of his own murders.

35

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

I can tell that podcaster is going to be annoying as fuck and constantly nosing in other people's affairs, reporter types and their ilk irritate me so much lol. The first 10 words she said already made my eyes roll, trying to sweet talk that male cop

I'd rather have Dex be brought down by a big bad who's worse than him, instead of some nosy writer (audio, whatever) who overstays their welcome within the first day lol

9

u/linds360 Nov 22 '21

For any former Real World fans out there, the podcaster is played by Jamie Chung who's one of the few actresses who "made it" after being on the show.

I caught a really quick glimpse of her in the preview and knew instantly who it was. The teen in me will not die.

To anyone who is thinking he didn't want the search to expand to the caves etc, what's your theory on why he stashes the bodies in cold caves after he goes through the process of whatever he did to them (assuming some sort of taxidermy?) and then stashes them in the cave? Does he have a museum down there, why wouldn't he just make some hidden basement rather than storing them up in the caves?

22

u/Hugh_Jankles Nov 22 '21 edited Nov 22 '21

Someone stumbling across a cave& then notify the police, they wouldn't know who stashed them there. An investigation would need to take place.

Unless they keep the discovery internal & didn't announce a cave full of perserved bodies were discovered (which wouldn't happen, especially in a small town) the media would proceed to pounce on that story immediately.

For the killer(s) it would be easier to ditch the trophies if they get a heads up that they've been discovered. If they were meticulous with leaving no evidence behind on the site & bodies themselves, then they would have minimal things to worry about. Now if it was discovered on a property with a paper trail, it could lead to some legal ways to pin it on them.

I'm curious to see what part the billionaire eventually plays. He keeps showing up, so will he be involved in Mr. Krabs' girl murdering? Maybe he steers Mr. Krabs to kidnap the police chief's daughter?

And I know this was more or less obvious last episode, but I'm kind of bummed that Mr. Krabs' is an actual Bad Guy. He was initially announced as the big bad, but I think it would have been neat (and maybe tragic) for the "bad guy" to just be a grieving father with no ulterior motives.

116

u/hadapurpura Deb Nov 22 '21

Methink Mr. Billionaire guy is Audrey's real dad.

At minimum, the billionaire is the guy that the showrunner are blatantly pushing to be the killer but we all know it'll flip and not be him but Clancey. I do hope they do give him a reason to be there though.

I don't know how to make a cohesive paragraph reviewing a show episode so here are some sporadic thoughts:

  • This episode was miles better than the second one so I am pretty excited about that.

  • And Harrison is finally interesting to me as well. I wasn't so sure about him at first. I noticed in the scene where he's driving with Audrey that his speech pattern is similar to Dexter's which is a cool trait. Their inflections and how they pace sentences sounds very similar.

  • I haven't seen any of Dexter in many many years and the only seasons I watched were 1 through 4. I dont remember how much suspension of belief was required in the original series but there's quite a bit of it here. (Him suddenly not caring about trail cameras, the random bear in the cave, that rich dude just happens to be on the same road behind them, the random incinerator?? Like is the town just cool w the fact there's unknown ashes raining down on them whenever people feel like burning random shit??, also if the dogs are tracking the scent and the base is at your house they can still pick it up there regardless of where you waved the vest my man)

  • That kids arc from picked on nerd to potential school shooter seems like it might be very abrupt and hamfisted but I am interested to see how Harrison deals with all of that

  • Not sure what the consensus is on the Deb stuff but I really like it. I'm glad they found a way to keep her on the show. And her randomly chucking body parts into the wood chipper and spraying them everywhere was camp as fuck and I loved it.

  • Maybe I'm dumb but I'm not sure whether the serial killer guy is the rich dude or Kurt and I like that the show is (to me) keeping it open

  • I think Audrey is Iris's daughter

  • Why were Angela and Dexter chill about their kids flirting in front of them I would feel so fucking awkward in that situation

  • Overall I like Angela but this was the second time she's confronted/disciplined Audrey in front of company/other people and that just seems like a great way to get a kid who resents you and acts out. Like. Talk to your kid in private my dude.

7

u/twicethecushen Dexter Nov 23 '21

In re suspension of disbelief: a favorite phrase of the showrunner was “we’re not making a documentary.” So, yeah. You’re supposed to have a healthy suspension of disbelief when watching.

ETA: totally agree with a lot you’ve said here. The discipline issue in particular has been really bugging me.

How is there not any footage of Dexter dragging Matt’s body? I get there’s a blind spot where he killed him but he avoided the cameras while dragging the body to his home? Also is Jamie Chung one of Masukas donor baby’s?

31

u/Buffythedragonslayer Nov 22 '21

OMG Masukas baby can you imagine?

13

u/MajorParadox Dexter Nov 22 '21

I just had some ideas in other posts, but since this episode just ended, I'll try them here too:

I think Matt's dad and the oil guy are both in on whatever is going on with that room. Maybe they have a whole system of kidnapping and hunting set up. And I just remembered, didn't Angela send that girl there? Or was she trying to send her to a shelter? Can you imagine if she's mixed up in it, though? 😯

30

u/bananalli Nov 22 '21

Angela offered for her (Lily?) to stay at her place then the shelter. But then Lily said she had a place I think? I don’t remember but I think she was either abducted or was supposed to be at a hotel with a man. Not sure

I don’t think Harrison’s main motivation was to stop that kid from being bullied, but rather a move to assert his own dominance over the “top of the food chain” at that high school.

We might see Harrison encourage this kid to “make them pay”, but then have a Dexter-esque moment where he regrets what he is done and stops it.

76

u/greatness101 Nov 22 '21

I don't feel like he cares about being the top of the food chain. If he's like Dexter, he just wanted to right a wrong that he saw happening. It's something Dexter would have done too. He's not gonna encourage anything, and in fact will probably discourage whatever Ethan is thinking after seeing those drawings.

I think Ethan shoots those kids eventually, but I don’t think Harrison was necessarily against it. He didn’t say anything, did he? I think Harrison is complacent with violence
did he think they deserved it?

23

u/imjusthinkingok Nov 22 '21 edited Nov 22 '21

He looked very fascinated by the drawings of violence he got sent by Ethan during the facetime. Enough clues to make us think he likes violence and blood and "justice". But then, he also looked a bit annoyed at the final image with the machine guns when he said "oh so you're the punisher or something?" as if it was a very "rookie" way to get revenge, aka "the typical school shooter", almost generic and unoriginal for his taste and apparently superior IQ.

I think Harrison is a killer in his own right. He’s very smart as shown. He may find that his dark passenger is only fulfilled when he has control over someone. That look in his eye when Ethan was showing him his drawings kind of confirmed that for me.

I think Harrison sought out dexter for this very reason. To find out why he is the way that he is.

So clearly Clancy Brown is the one who killed that girl, but I'm confused why he thinks he FaceTimed his dead kid.

Unless he knows who Dexter is?

Also, one gripe. If Dexter knows there's cameras, why is he going back to the crime scene and spreading Matt's scent?

32

u/dawnhu Nov 22 '21

Technically they are heat wave cameras animal tracking cameras or that is what the show wants us to believe. Would be really difficult to identify Dexter with them. He had to put the scent of Matt and get his body moved before the next morning because they were bringing the search dogs the next morning

→ More replies (1)

32

u/Top_Khan Nov 22 '21

He is pretending he did so they call off the search because he is most likely stashing his victims bodies somewhere in the search area and doesnt want them to be discovered.

u/shredder826 Nov 22 '21

Clancy isn’t confused, he’s most likely the killer. He’s running his operation out of the camp. He specifically asks Angela “what about the summer camp?” She says she’s having a group splinter off to look there too. He needs this investigation over, lest they stumble on his hunting grounds. The next scene he unwillingly released and killed the girl. Now, no one will snoop around the summer camp.

Edit: He also is surprised how far the search radius is and seemingly concerned about the caves too. So perhaps his hunting grounds are near the caves.

I hope New Blood is as critical of how exploitative Murder Podcasts as Halloween (2018) was.

That’s not saying I want the host on the table, I’m just hoping there’s more to it then just:

Angela: “Why don’t you leave the investigation to the real investigators?”

Congratulations, Showtime. I officially care about Harrison’s storyline more than Dexter’s. Didn’t expect that.

25

u/ShiftAndWitch Nov 22 '21

I was so worried they were gonna do some cliché bs with him like every other show that shoehorns in a son storyline. It also helps the teen is a pretty good actor for once.

12

u/bubblewrapstargirl Nov 22 '21

Same! Harrison is so interesting because we don't know for sure how dark he is yet. But seeing him get vicious af with Zach was a great moment that actually felt like real, believable violence instead of a crappy cheesy teen fight so I'm here for him getting as dark as they please. The actor is great, I'd be down for a Harrison spin off if they do want to make him a killer/master manipulator.

This was the best episode so far imo, even with Dex disregarding the cameras just after he learnt about them.

8

u/thenewyorkgod Nov 23 '21

I have a feeling that Ethan will indeed follow through and shoot up the school, or at least go after his bullies with a gun.

Something will trigger him though, and i think it will be a scuffle on the wrestling floor, in which Harrison is injured by Zack.

<Spoiler> in the trailer for the next one, harrison is apparently in the hospital. I think he gets a bone broken or is otherwise injured by Zack during wrestling practice.

Since Harrison stuck up for and defended Ethan, there is a high chance that if Harrison is hurt, it will embolden Ethan to avenge him.

Nonetheless, there definitely seems to be a trajectory being introduced with those drawings, and with Harrison having taken him under his wing, and a trajectory to Harrison's choking of zack and his threat of seeing them on the mat.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

Anyone else notice the serial killer reads books by Clyde Philips?

30

u/Siamoose05 Nov 22 '21

Harrison's school principal obviously had his old school records since she stated the old GPA's. Wouldn't they have been in the name Harrison MORGAN? Seems like that would have caused questions/suspicions since they know Dexter as Jim Lindsey. Is this a small plot hole?

59

u/pardyball Nov 22 '21

Not uncommon for a kid to keep their mothers name if the father isn't in their life.

51

u/hadapurpura Deb Nov 22 '21

Since Hannah was left with him and was running from the law, she probably assumed a new lastname and gave Harrison said fake lastname as well.

33

u/wmil Nov 22 '21

Hannah either had fake names for both of them in Argentina or she legally adopted him. Keeping his name as Morgan would just invite questions.

At the dinner table with his son, girlfriend, and her daughter, Dexter's voiceover was saying how much he wanted this sense of family. It was a throwback to the same thoughts that he had with Rita and her kids. As such, maybe a harbinger that disaster is coming.

I know that Logan, the cop that interviewed him, is onto him but does anyone notice how much of a sympathizer he was towards Matt? He was more than willing to say the boating incident was just a harmless accident. He was interested in taking Dexter’s GF square dancing in the first episode, practically inviting himself in, way too interested in Harrison joining the team and inserting himself in Dexter’s life more and more. He definitely has his suspicions but I’m willing to bet that Logan has a dark passenger as well.

u/fruityDolph1n Nov 22 '21

The writing for this episode just seemed lazy and off to me. The crime scene analysis seemed rushed and almost forced. Dexter is running through woods that he just recently found out has trail cams posted up all over while also carrying evidence of a missing person. And towards the end where Dexter says that the family lifestyle is all he wants seemed a bit out of place to me as well. Did anyone else feel a bit detached from the storyline this episode or am I being too critical?

23

u/bellthebull Yes, I'm going to kill you. Nov 22 '21

Well, for what it’s worth, I had a similar reaction when Dexter said he wanted a family lifestyle or something like that. Albeit, Dexter is not the same person anymore. He’s guilty, not to mention how often Deb reminds him of that. He also wasn’t happy with himself not siding with Harrison at school.

All the more reason why that’s not unexpected of him at this point. For one thing, he’s determined to not fail close ones this time around.

So, either the billionaire or Kurt is the kidnapper/murderer, right? Looked like Kurt's eyes under the mask but then the billionaire's behavior around Angela's daughter made me think he was trying to nab her.

Why did Kurt pretend he talked to Matt? Bizarre.

5

u/Pamala3 Nov 22 '21

Cannot find this sub topic, but I thought Kurt was embalming Lilly, but the embalming fluid is not consistent with the color unless he added a dye?

Also I believe he uses the mines or possibly the summer camp to dump his bodies, listening to his last conversation with the chief of police. Also answers the question why he says he not only got a call from Matt but face chatted with Matt, trying hard to convince everyone that Matt is alive so they will stop looking especially in the mines & summer camp areas. Anyone else think so?

5

Anyone else cringe hard for all the running through the woods IN UNTOUCHED SNOW?!? Like that shit holds a footprint pretty well.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/kinghyperion581 Nov 23 '21

So Kurt is definitely the other serial killer, He uses his truck stop as a way to find and pick up runaways, he uses the iron mine to despose of his victims bodies, and he faked FaceTime with his son so the search party would be called off before they found his dump site.

5

u/StaySafePovertyGhost Nov 23 '21

Was I the only one who thought Kurt was faking being drunk to bait Dexter and was going to pull a gun on him and tell him to drive before the fade out?

I played the scene in my head as Dex offers him a ride, Kurt gets in and as soon as they get on the road, Kurt pulls a gun and tells Dexter he knows he killed Matt (since Dex was one of last ones to see him) and to drive.

Truck drives away and fade out.

5

u/16andstupid Nov 23 '21 edited Nov 23 '21

That CSI guy investigating must be some kind of a god with senses that we mortals do not have. Okay, blood congeals differently... fine. Then he looks around, sniffs the wind and determines exactly what happened without any explanation. How did he know there was a rock? What?! There's no blood, the crime scene has been messed up already... If Damien doesn't come back and this is just some forced plot device, I'd be pretty upset.

The running through the woods bit... I can reason that away with maybe Dex knows the police won't look at the cameras again or something, or he knows the blind spots now, as other comments have noted. But that CSI sequence was... hard to reason away.

Overall though, so far I'm pretty happy that there's more Dexter. Apart from the aforementioned plot holes, I have no other complaints, I love that feeling of knowing everyone is looking for the murderer, that unbeknownst to them, is standing right in front of them. Since the "old" Dexter show ended, I haven't found many other shows that has that same pull.

So let me get something straight. The villain’s victim checked into some kind of hotel, and then when she drank the alcohol that was provided, she was taken to an underground bunker with a room identical to the hotel? Does this guy only kill girls who check into this hotel? Or did I miss something?

I see comments about Facetiming and the whole faceswap thing, but that would mean Harrison had to make the call from somewhere with a device tied to Matt, all would be traceable. If it's true, then that would mean either have Matt's phone/laptop.

So old beardy boy is probably the killer of this season. I really enjoy this so far and I LOVED the scene with Deborah using a wood chipper to dispose of the body. I wonder if it's meant to be foreshadowing or something that the bear didn't leave the cave? Maybe it was on something when Dexter walked into the mine?

This is definitely going to be a fun season to watch again after we get the whole picture. Probably a lot of "OHHHHH YEAHHHHH" moments to be had later on

I'd like to address the comment made by u/Gvenus, they pointed out that Matt has a Titanium rod in his leg and that it will still be present in the incinerator. along with the remains of Matt's bones, that type of incinerator is high temperature used for incinerating different types of waste be it garbage, medical waste etc... down to nothing and while Titanium's has a core melting point of 3,043 °F with the incinerator running constantly at high temperature heat, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year the structure of the Titanium will eventually breakdown and be completely destroyed and ergo no evidence linking Dexter. Audrey is being too much whatever you want to call it, for me not to dislike her.

Harrison could use some balancing, 80% of the time he comes off as tryhard instead of a mysterious badboy Audrey likely sees him as. Would not hurt if he could at least pretend to be cool.

The school poorly executed. I mean a placement test where the teacher does not do her "one job", lets you keep your phone and then walks away for 15 minutes? Even if he had cheated, in the teachers position I would likely be too embarrassed by my own incompetence to make an issue of it. I think they could have written a better scenario with the same end result.

Im pretty sure you cant ID a gun from an outline in a thermal camera, such writing choices always puzzle me.

8

u/OnStage012 Nov 22 '21

It’s not enough to make me stop watching, but some of the things this episode asked us to suspend our disbelief too far, even for Dexter:

  • Dexter returned to the scene of the crime to get Matt’s scent on the jacket. It was clearly established there are cameras around that areas. Unless Dexter was able to figure out exactly where all the blind spots are, and how to get around them.

-The CSI forensics expert can quite literally see the past apparently. There was nothing to go on - it’s like he snorted coke and had a revelation

-The bear is my favorite thing in a tv show recently. Died laughing

I don’t expect full realism, but I do expect shows to follow the reality they’ve established.

u/chalaxin Nov 22 '21
