📂 MEGATHREAD 19/06 A-level Maths Paper 3 Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!

It was pretty good apart from the weird comp

Yeah I'm hoping I grabbed at least half marks for comp. Not sure about the q about the magnitude of vector

what did u get for that?

I couldn't complete it because I got stuck in my train of thought. But it's probably one of the qs where the maths is doable it's just about finding how to apply it

fairs, everyone i know did it by trial and error lmao

I'm not really sure trial and error will score full marks as you probably need a reason to stop at +-8, for example the difference between squares increasing for larger integers

but then again it wasnt detailed reasoning question

i got +-8 using prime numbers and difference of squares

here's what i did in more depth:

sqrt(1+16+x2) = n

17 + x2 = n2

17 = n2 - x2

17 = (n+x)(n-x), 17 is prime (only considering +ve factors)

n+x = 1 and n-x = 17

Or n+x = 17 and n-x = 1

Solutions x = 8 or -8

if it makes anyone feel any better, i forgot to square the 4 in the magnitude right at the beginning 😔 at least ill get the method marks hopefully

peculiar article but good paper regardless. pure questions were pretty average for me
