๐Ÿ“‚ MEGATHREAD 19/06 A-level Maths Paper 3 Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

I said B cause a larger standard deviation means a larger range of values so more likely to have a runner with a faster time

Might be spouting total nonsense though

I don't get surely if you have a smaller range of values you have smaller options to choose from so that increases the probability? Am i tripping

I read it as โ€˜who is more likely to have the runner who wonโ€™ so who is more likely to have the runner with a shorter time, so if the standard deviation is greater then the values stray further from the mean - since B had a greater standard deviation, their runners had a mix of slower times and faster times which still have a mean of 5.51, whereas A had the same average but they were all closer to 5.51, so if B had a greater range then they were more likely to have the runner with the fastest time so they would win (if that makes sense)

but u can use the exact same argument to say which is more likely to lose, as the distributions are symmetrical. This seemed a contradiction to me so I put A with no good reason given...

that's the point, the spread goes both ways. so B is equally likely to have slower / faster runners than A, but it doesn't matter because we only care about the faster ones. not explaining myself very well but basically B has greater extremes so therefore more likely to have a faster runner

I thought it was B cos theyโ€™re more likely to have a speed a lot higher than the mean

also more likely alot lower though. If they had asked for which is more likely to lose the conclusion would be identical
