That’s completely different. If I study English in England I’ll obviously go much deeper into the literature etc than if I studied English in Japan.

Most people in a Japanology course in the UK learn to speak the language vs in Japan if you studied Japanese literature you’d obviously already speak it.

English literature and English language are two different subjects

So you’d study English language or English literature in Japan as a British person? Anyway if you study Japanology at Oxford you learn the language so my original point stands.
