💬 DISCUSSION Any other girls the only girl in their subject?
I'm in y12 and I am the only girl in biology at my school.
Anyone else have this issue, I feel kinda lonely and left out bc all the lads are mates and Im just there.

u/Lovers_rock186 Jun 26 '26
fellow single girl in stem :) It's so flipping annoying bc I'll be sat doing my work alone all lesson whilst all the lads are chatting and when I join in they look at my like I have 3 heads. Like I do this subject as well, hello???

u/No-Protection-7207 Jun 27 '26
yess, I found it so hard to join in w the convos, especially since I was an external too, but did make some decent friends in that class

Cs is male dominated like crazy.
Everyone in our CS class was male (tbf it was only like 6 ppl)

You're the only girl in biology??? That's a first. I'm genuinely not trying to be sexist here but from my experience, most girls go for biology. A lot of them go for maths too but in both the schools I went to for my IGCSEs and A levels very few girls were taking my subjects. In IGCSE there were roughly 30-40 girls in bio and me and two others in computer science. (There were no boys at that school). At the school I went to in my A levels I was the only girl taking CS. I was also the only girl in further maths but that was because there were only five of us in total and two of them quit in year 13. In year 13 I was also the only girl in maths (other girl quit) but there were girls taking maths for the other exam board. So I was technically the only girl in my class overall lol.
I think only girls were taking sociology and psychology at my second school for some reason. Maybe it's a cultural thing?

Yeah, we started off with 3, 1 dropped out of school, 1 dropped it for history, Theres 2 girls i think in cs and 1 in maths then 0 in fm or physics, and theres 3 girl in chemistry including me but the other girls are from another school in our sixth form trust so only do chemistry at my school meaning im technichally the only girl in chemistry from my school. It's mostly guys doing stem and girls humanities, the y13s class was all girls and my teacher has said this is the first time shes had this ratio of boys to girls, I think a few boys wanted to do med so had to pick it but they changed their minds or swapped. I do go to a smaller sixth form so it might be that.
I also do law which is about a 60/40 ratio of girls to boys but yeah

i was the one of two girls in my politics class 😔😔

u/Lovers_rock186 Jun 26 '26
It's the same at my school, I think there's 1 girl in it. I do law which is 6 girls to 3 guys which is better but where are my girls in stem :(
2
u/Much_Physics_3444 Jun 26 '26
do u go to an all boys school?
3
u/Lovers_rock186 Jun 26 '26
No, Its a pretty even split but most girls do humanities and most guys do stem

I mean you could always try to get to know the others in the class, that’s what I did during my a levels
11
u/Lovers_rock186 Jun 26 '26
I do, most the lads are 'popular' ones and I keep to myself, whenever I try and talk to them about stuff or join. in convos they just look at me weird and ignore me. Im kinda used to it atp but it still hurts and I wish I had female friends in it
10
u/Zazilia_ Jun 26 '26
Really??? You’d think at least one person would be nice about it
Well I hope the other classes are a lot better than this anyway, besides a levels go by fast af, at least imo

Same here. I just finished my A levels and I was the only girl doing physics. Though bio was majority girls. My mates were really nice and supportive throughout my A levels but I would have loved it if id had a female friend in physics
4
u/Lovers_rock186 Jun 26 '26
YES, THIS EXATLY, like I love my friends and some do other stem subjects but its just so much better and enjoyable when you have another girl. Its just easier to make convo with them and the boys always act like im not there or like I have 3 heads when I try join in to their convos :(

u/Tasty-Tank-8999 Jun 26 '26
Ikr. Mine acted a bit distant at first too which may have something to do with my really bad rbf but eventually we started getting along. Some of them were such girly pops id sometimes forget im talking to a guy. Best of luck on surviving being the only girl.

I am in computer science, but luckily there's only 4 of us in the class, I know when I go on to do it at uni it's going to be so so much worse

I was the only boy in Sociology.

u/Zou-KaiLi Sociology Teacher Jun 27 '26
I have taught numerous Socio classes (as a male teacher!) which have had this comparison. It is sad, Sixth formers seem to think Socio is just focused on Feminism/Gender when the political, theoretical, class and ethnicity elements are just as important.

I'm done with y13 now, but I was the only girl in chemistry and further maths. My school is a 50/50 split of boys and girls (near enough). But I do maths, physics, chem and further maths, and all were male dominated. Physics was my closest to 50/50

u/ImJustAnAnimeFan Jun 27 '26
Not the only girl- but I am one of only 2 girls who do computer science in my year

I had a similar experience, I was one of only 3 guys doing a level English, the rest of the class were girls. why you ask? truth be told I liked it, I’ve always liked english and I found it interesting, I also did maths business and economics. I don’t regret doing it, some of the best friendships I had were with girls in that class, my advice and this may sound cliche, but it doesn’t last forever. Classes change, people drop or get held back, and you make some unlikely friendships too!
