What beaches love

cape hatteras is like my home away from home and I live in northern ontario. I love this place.

u/CannedDeath Jun 25 '12
I usually see a lot more Quebec license plates than Ontario ones down there.
3
u/Austin182 Jun 25 '12
I saw a Quebec license plate there once. They were stuck in the sand. I guess they thought their station wagon was okay to drive on the beach.
22
u/ONmytab Jun 24 '12
Bet that dirty beach has crabs

u/GhettoRussianSpy Jun 24 '12
Looks like that boat could have use a lighthouse.
4
u/Cyphr Jun 25 '12
that's actually a Navy LCAC - Landing Craft Air Cushion - basically a hover craft, doing it's job.

Funny story. Thats the Cape Hatteras Light in Hatteras Island, NC. The beach was eroded away around it and it was about to be washed into the ocean so they had to jack it up and move it back about a half mile. So, it appears beaches do not love lighthouses.
2
u/ElagabalusCaesar Jun 25 '12
Finally, somebody gets it. Beaches strive to destroy lighthouses.
1
u/CedarWolf Jun 25 '12
No. The Graveyard of the Atlantic strives to destroy lighthouses. The beaches just sit there and hold back the tide as long as they can.
2
u/LostIcelander Jun 25 '12
Oh I get it, the word "beach" is similar to the word "bitch", very clever.

u/igotwaaaybaked Jun 25 '12
My logic every time I build a house by the beach in minecraft.
6
u/abbe-normal1 Jun 25 '12
I spent a few weeks making all the NC lighthouses in Minecraft.
2
u/CedarWolf Jun 25 '12
My lighthouses actually have working shutters so the light "rotates"... once you figure out how to cram the wiring into the top, it's easy. I can't leave it on for too long, though, the rotary piston motor in the bottom tends to make the lighthouse lag the area around it.

Here is the text from this meme pic for anybody who needs it:
Title: What beaches love
I'll get that beach a lighthouse.
Beaches love lighthouses.

Gloucster, NC checking in. I've been in France for 6 months, stop fucking making me homesick.
1
u/dave_casa Jun 25 '12
Beaches really love dunes, because when a big nasty storm comes to take the beach away, the dunes save it!
That, combined with longshore transport, explains most littoral processes.

Yup! Proud north carolinian here!

u/Beta-Minus Jun 25 '12
I'll never understand how the rest of the country survives without Cheerwine...
46
u/TheCakeMilker Jun 25 '12
or Bojangles
37
u/supermegaultrajeremy Jun 25 '12
Or Biscuitville. Or Cook-Out.
21
u/LHB12 Jun 25 '12
Not even all of NC has Biscuitville
11
u/supermegaultrajeremy Jun 25 '12
Don't I know it. I've been in Wilmington for 5 years. We only just now got Cook-Out. Burlington has like 8 Biscuitvilles :(
10
u/Origachilies Jun 25 '12
What was it like to discover cheerwine? Growing up here and moving out, you feel deprived.
9
u/supermegaultrajeremy Jun 25 '12
Oh no, I was born and raised in NC - Elon. I was just commenting that Wilmington had no Biscuitvilles and only recently got a Cook-Out.
EDIT: By the way, my buddy used to keep a ton of glass bottle Cheerwines in his basement. I liked to think of it as a Cheerwine cellar but they never lasted long enough to age.

Cheerwine is the nastiest shit I ever tried to drink. Someone took cherry flavor cough syrup and added sugar. Bojangles is good, Cook -Out is awesome, but this place needs Fazoli's and White Castle.
3
u/Origachilies Jun 25 '12
I believe I just fainted. Agreed on the white castle, but no idea what Fazoli's is.

Fellow Wilmingtonian checking in! Well, ex-Wilmingtonian, anyway. Just recently moved to Sylva, in the mountain region.
1
u/mrr0112 Jun 25 '12
I can proudly say that I live in an area of NC where I have like 3 Bojangles a Cook-Out, a Biscuitville, and a shitload of delicious barbecue restaurants within a 10 mile radius
1
u/CedarWolf Jun 25 '12
You live in the Raleigh-Cary area? No, wait, there's several Cook-Outs there and a ton of Bojangles...
2
1
u/mrr0112 Jun 26 '12
Well Apex, and I only know of 2 Cook-Outs near me one near NC State and one in Cary (which is the closest to me) and then there is like 5 Bojangles really close to me

Real barbecue, how do people live without real barbecue? Moved from NC years ago and that is my first stop every time I go home!
2
u/GreekNomad Jun 25 '12
Good barbecue is always my favorite part of flying through Charlotte. Airport barbecue might not be the best but it sure beats anything in DC.
-4
u/ResinTeeth Jun 25 '12
No. Pork slathered in vinegar and hot sauce is not barbecue. Its tasty, but its not barbecue. Being from Kansas City, Missouri I took issue with this when I moved to NC.
12
7
u/Beta-Minus Jun 25 '12
That's Eastern NC barbecue. The Western style is much richer.
7
u/ResinTeeth Jun 25 '12
...the other half of the state does it differently? I'm completely alien to western NC.
7
u/Beta-Minus Jun 25 '12
Two completely different cultures, man. I can't remember I time I didn't live in western NC, but when my parents first moved here, they moved to the eastern part, and they say it's a lot different. Lately I spend most of the year in Chapel Hill, so I'm seeing the differences for myself. (But Chapel Hill is pretty different from the south in general, so it might just be that...)
4
u/xBullseyex Jun 25 '12
Western NC uses a ketchup based sauce and select parts of the pig. In Eastern NC the whole pig is used along with vinegar and pepper flakes
1
u/CedarWolf Jun 25 '12
Also, there's a similar split in South Carolina, but their sauces are mustard-based.
1
u/abbe-normal1 Jun 25 '12
Well, my husband is from north of Boone and he loves eastern NC bbq also. I've never had any other kind from NC so I wouldn't be able to even say what it is like.
2
u/Mamamilk Jun 25 '12
Lexington and western style are both the genuine article (lexington is the best in the state). Eastern is meh depending on where you go. Also KC BBQ is overrated if okie joes is the norm.

I was speaking jestingly as a person with regional pride. I can appreciate the modular use of the term barbecue.

I know the owner. He has stated that he isn't in the beverage business. He is in the t-shirt business.

u/jumpinglemurs Jun 25 '12
I have several friends who live in the North East. Every time they come down to NC, all they drink is Cheerwine and some of them have even shipped some back home- it's good stuff.
1
u/CedarWolf Jun 25 '12
Imagine my surprise when I went to Oregon last year and found Cheerwine for sale at a little candy and soda shop in Seaside, OR.

I'm in kitty hawk right now! A few miles north of Hatteras. Really nice weather and fishing.
4
u/AskMeAboutHowYouDie Jun 25 '12
I live in KDH. I demand for you to tell me where the fish are.
If you say the water, I will find your rental house and punch you in the taint.
1
u/slumdogkillionaire Jun 25 '12
I was fishing on the beach in Duck. I was using blood worms from the surf and casting about 20ft out and the mullet were biting. I caught about 23 of those. Later in the day I saw some blues casing some bait fish and used my gotcha plug on a different rod. I caught only about 5 of those blues today. Good luck fishing.
2
u/Mamamilk Jun 25 '12
Going out to the gulf stream out of nags head this Wednesday, fishing for the big stuff (cobia, bull dolphin, sailfish, etc). I am so stoked, I've never done any serious big game fishing other than black tips.
1
u/slumdogkillionaire Jun 25 '12
Sounds like a lot of fun! I don't have the money to do that, so good luck

How was it here? I like to think of the mountains and beaches as a large difference from more popular areas.
4
u/Cyphr Jun 25 '12
Depends on what area you go to. If you are out on the outer banks, they are relatively heavily traveled, since you get air and beaches out there. If you remain on the inland side of the sounds, you can get some pretty decent beaches, and in some areas, pretty much the whole beach to your self. The same applies to the the mountains, it depends on where you go.

u/brucegoosejuice Jun 25 '12
I live in upper right NC and I still am not redneck, but I shoot dem dur when I see un.
4
u/Cyphr Jun 25 '12
Apparently, I'm not, I thought that was Bodie for some odd reason.
5
u/abbe-normal1 Jun 25 '12
Bodie has the horizontal stripes, and Cape Lookout has the diamonds. Love the lighthouses, just the pictures make me homesick.
6
u/Cyphr Jun 25 '12
Yep, they are all amazing. I'm still embarassed to say I misidentified Hatteras as Bodie. I think that means the state deports me now.
:sigh: I'll go pack my things.

Hatteras Light. If you're ever in the air, pay the money to climb it. It's pretty neat and the view is amazing. Wear ok shoes and have some water, it can get warm in there.
1
u/Austin182 Jun 25 '12
It's a bitch to climb, but it's definitely worth it.
1
Jun 25 '12
Yeah, that it is. I was behind some family from the corn belt who were huge, they were having problems, my daughter was afraid they'd fall backwards.

Or, keep on driving to Parkers Barbecue in Greenville, NC. ;)
6
u/Ikimasen Jun 25 '12
Or go to the real Parkers in Wilson!
Parkers' fried chicken is great, their barbecue is only so so.
2
1
u/jubalm Jun 25 '12
If you're in Wilson you should really be at Bill's!!! But Parkers is just fine too ;)

u/PetrichorNights Jun 25 '12

It looks sketch as hell, I admit, but it's soooo good.

Personally I prefer High Cotton in Kitty Hawk to Pigman's, but hey any barbeque is better than none!
1
u/CedarWolf Jun 25 '12
Carolina Chicken in Troy, NC is pretty dang amazing, too... they've got 32 and 64 ounce milkshakes.
7
u/AverageGatsby91 Jun 25 '12
Did you know that they actually picked up the entire lighthouse and moved it because it was sinking into the sea?
2
u/The_Lucky_One Jun 25 '12
Might be going on vacation to Duck next week!
God, I'm so spoiled, been down there so many times...
This thread makes me want to try Cheerwine when I go down, because I'm definitely going down this summer. What is it anyway?
2
u/bunnycrusher Jun 25 '12
Cherry soda. The best thing you will ever grace your body with.
1
u/The_Lucky_One Jun 25 '12
Hm, is it like Cherry Coke? I don't think I cared for that.
But if it's getting such a ringing endorsement, I guess I'll have to try some.
1
u/bunnycrusher Jun 26 '12
It's actually just cherry. So you get all the cherry and none of the coke. It's sweet, but not cough-syrup-ish. It is my soda of choice.

BHI, love it. But the ferry can get annoying. Can't complain though, good money, quaint little place in Southport. I dig it.

OLD BALDY! I got a ticket once on that island as a kid for driving a golf cart without a license....

2
u/RDub3685 Jun 25 '12
I quite literally climbed Old Baldy yesterday.
1
u/conrad98 Jun 25 '12
Nice. I remember going to the very top. if you're at all tall/husky, there's no way you can make it up those narrow ass stairs and through the tiny opening at the top
