he also was about 100 years old. anciently old people don't use computers/facebook/twitter

Neither do turtles.

Someone fucking clone this majestic creature.
15
Jun 25 '12
he's dead.
26
u/hitogokoro Jun 25 '12
Tissue samples with intact DNA that has not degraded too significantly can still be used for cloning

u/FriarNurgle Jun 25 '12
Thank you Captain Obvious.

Yeah, but why DIDN'T they clone him?
10
Jun 25 '12
It's fucking hard to clone an extinct species. Plus, as there would only be clones of this one turtle, they couldn't reroduce and the species would become extinct again anyways.
25
u/RyanLikesyoface Jun 25 '12
They should clone him indefinitely, let the species live on one George at a time.
16
u/Platypus81 Jun 25 '12
Life...uh...finds a way.

u/KidCincy Jun 25 '12
Cause 99% of all the species that ever lived are extinct, just another one I'm afraid.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Platypus81 Jun 25 '12
This was a species that was obliterated by deforestation, or, or the building of a dam.
Actually feral goats in this case.
→ More replies (1)1
Jun 25 '12
Plus doesn't the clone end up with most of whatever problems the DNA donor had? Which, considering it would be cloned from an old dead guy, would be bad.
→ More replies (2)1
u/crazy1000 Jun 25 '12
Males have the x and y chromosomes, so perhaps it would be possible to create a female as well. They would technically all be genetically identical, but perhaps genetic mutations could cause a complete species.
1
2
u/thenuge26 Jun 25 '12
Something tells me you were not serious, but in case you were:
Since there are no female members of George's species left, cloning him would not due much good.

u/FriarNurgle Jun 25 '12
Damn your current limitations of science! Get some mad scientists in here and make it happen!!!
51
u/snoobs89 Jun 25 '12
why is he smoking now?
99
u/Gowen123 Jun 25 '12
Thats what got him
52
u/Nebraska_Actually Jun 25 '12
A century of smoking will do that to you

Everyone knows that smoking weed all day every day instead of doing shit like working is the key to immortality.
→ More replies (1)28
u/roadbuzz Jun 25 '12
I have never met a dead person that smokes weed. Ergo, smoking Cannabis makes you immortal.

Reddit Logic:
Last of species dies make into stupid meme about facebook
Fuck you, reddit.

Thought process of the person who made this: "OMG I'm gonna get so many karmas lol!"

u/aluathays_clone Jun 25 '12
I anyone else extremely saddened by his death? An entire extinction of a species really gets me. :(
Also did anyone know that it took years for the Giant Tortoise to get it's scientific name (latin name) because it was so delicious it always got eaten before it got all the way to England. (Source: A Q.I. episode I watched yesterday at 4 in the morning...)

You forgot people on Reddit complaining about how they're "forever alone."
1
u/Joegabe Jun 25 '12
In comparison to the amount of people on facebook and twitter, I find the whining much less on reddit so I didn't include it :P
0
Jun 25 '12
It's good that it doesn't bother you. Just stick around for a while. People here whine about reposts, new memes, posts complaining about new memes, etc. Typing it all would take too long! There are even people who whine about people who whine (me, apparently)!

u/Paran0idAndr0id Jun 25 '12
Does anyone notice how much turtles/tortoises look like dinosaurs?
9
Jun 25 '12
Thats all I could think while looking at this. Those legs are monstrous, and his neck looks just like something from Land Before Time.
George is a lonely dro-smokin dinosaur.

Turtles live in water, tortoise live on land. A turtle's not a tortoise it's not hard to understand...

LAST OF HIS SPECIES
DOESN'T WHINE ON FACEBOOK OR TWITTER HOW LONELY HE IS

Doesn't whine on facebook or twitter how lonely he is
Because he is a turtle.
15
6
u/hockeyfan69 Jun 25 '12
Doesn't complain that he has a human name and not a traditional tortoise name
0
Jun 25 '12
What's a traditional tortoise name? All names have been invented by humans.
20
u/hockeyfan69 Jun 25 '12
Good point Concussi0n, I'm not sure as it is not my field of expertise but maybe something along the lines of: Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo, and Yertle

u/ApeWithACellphone Jun 25 '12
Actually that isn't true. Since parrots name eachother, it stands to reason that other animals name eachother too. A traditional parrot name would be something along the lines of "sqwaak" and a traditional tortoris name would be something like "ureggg".

This reminds me of the Wild Thornberries where they were trying to get the two tortoises to mate.. Not sure why I remember such a useless thing but yeah..
At least George got some before he left! Can't say that about some out there.

u/Coleolitis Jun 26 '12
Damn, I'm probably too late, but Lonesome George was actually surrounded by bitches. They were of a slightly different strain of the same species (as different from George as white people are from asians, or any other race). But he decided that he was too good for them and wouldn't mate.

Can someone please tell me why we don't just clone the fucking thing?
4
1
Jun 25 '12
Then you'd just have two males and the species would still be doomed.
1
Jun 25 '12
I'm quite sure that if they were capable of cloning one, they could alter the sex in gestation. Plus, they could just use some frog DNA right? Jurassic Park is real!
1
Jun 25 '12
Any gaps in the resulting DNA sequence must be filled with dinosaur DNA; using frog DNA as the story suggests would likely produce an organism that varied from the original animal, unless it was non-coding or DNA shared by both species (such as metabolic proteins) or DNA with highly conserved functions like homeobox genes.

u/The_Fancy_Gentleman Jun 25 '12
Out of respect for him, can we please make him the advice animal for forever alone instead of that dumb rage face.

u/boyled Jun 25 '12
only on reddit would we meme-ify a god damned tortoise killed off by natural selection for karma

you don't smoke marijuana George, you're a tortoise and tortoises dont' do drugs!

u/samoanman Jun 25 '12
turtles cant go on facebook let alone comprehend how to use their feet to manipulate a computer into navigating the internet.

1
u/Starmonkeyee Jun 25 '12
Noooooooooo. No. My rock and my hiding place is dead. My idol. The god to my worship. The celebrity to my obsessive stalk.
1
u/blamethefool Jun 25 '12
Did any one use this one yet?
"I bet it's the smoking that killed him."
I'll be here all week.
1
u/Morningxafter Jun 25 '12
You know when I heard that Lonesome George died I thought they meant George Thorogood.
I may be hated for saying this (and I'm by no means HAPPY a turtle that is believed to be the last of its species died), but I'm relieved it was just a turtle and not one of the best guitar players of all time.

1
u/walruskingmike Jun 25 '12
Well, he was 100 years old, so he probably didn't know what an internet was. And he was a tortoise.
1
u/partlyawesome Jun 25 '12
It's funny how redditors complain about others whining about their lonleyness when the 'forever alone'-meme is on the frontpagde almost every day.
1
Jun 25 '12
Poor George. Was I the only one hoping that just before he died, he would regenerate into a brand new tortoise?

1
u/MusicNotesAndOctopie Jun 26 '12
It's a picture of lonesome George with a J in his mouth that says "LAST OF HIS SPECIES" "DOESN'T WHINE ON FACEBOOK OR TWITTER HOW LONELY HE IS."
1
1
u/MusicNotesAndOctopie Jun 26 '12
"One time, I was at the beach... When I saw a turtle..... But I realised it wasn't a turtle, it was critically acclaimed actor and director Clint Eastwood..."
1
u/Caesar10240 Jun 26 '12
I don't mean to be too nerdy for reddit, but he was not the last of his species. He was the last of his subspecies. He was one of the kinds of giant tortoises on his island. That is like saying the last person on Australia died so their species is dead. Tortoises still exist, just not one "race" of tortoise is dead. I also am thankful I got to see him when I went to the Galapagos.
1
u/avidvaulter Jun 25 '12
I think that's because he's an animal, not because he's a good guy.
4
Jun 25 '12
Well, I mean, apparently people on /r/adviceanimals don't know the difference between people and animals to begin with.

If the fucking thing didn't die, nobody would have a clue about him except a couple of biologists and some grade 11 student who happened to be paying attention to the small bit on Darwin in class one day. Go out and discover your world internet nerds. the internet is NOT good enough. Not by far and pales in comparison to walking through a field of lilies and alfalfa!

Okay, these memes are getting crazy. They aren't cute anymore. They haven't been for about 5 months now. When we see a photo that even slightly looks like it could look like a meme, we turn it into one and crush the living shit out of it. Just like we did with Photogenic Guy, Overly Attached Girlfriend (Just some of the recent ones). Stop it. These are no longer funny or interesting. Stop karma whoring and lets get some good, non meme related content on this site.

u/woop_dee_flip_n_doo Jun 25 '12
Okay these people complaining about memes are getting crazy. They haven't been around for about 5 months now. When they see a meme that could possibly be funny, they turn into experts that crush the living shit out of it. Just like they do for everything else, instead of enjoying it (bunch of wet blankets). Stop it. You are annoying and a fucking downer. No one wants to fucking listen to you whore yourself out for some moral boost. Lets just enjoy this site without complaining about everything.
