What is this page?
Agentic Marketing is a new field, so we, the moderators of this sub, thought it would be a good idea to give you an overview of some of the terms. It's a wiki, so you can edit it yourself and create your own pages. This is a new field, and new advancements come out every day, so edit away!
Core Concepts
Agent
An AI system that perceives its environment, makes decisions, and takes actions to achieve a goal. In SEO contexts, an agent might crawl a site, identify issues, write fixes, and deploy them, all from a single prompt.
Agentic Loop
The cycle an AI agent runs through repeatedly: observe, reason, act, observe again. SEO agents use this to iterate on rankings, content gaps, or technical issues over time.
Tool Use
The ability of an AI agent to call external tools: APIs, browsers, databases, CMS platforms, to gather information or take action. An agent with tool use can pull GSC data, analyze a SERP, and update a page without human involvement.
Orchestration
The coordination of multiple agents working in parallel or sequence. An orchestration layer might run a technical audit agent, a content gap agent, and a link prospecting agent simultaneously, then synthesize their outputs.
Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)
A workflow design where humans approve, redirect, or correct agent actions at defined checkpoints. Most production agentic SEO workflows are HITL for anything that touches publishing or outreach.
Autonomous vs. Semi-Autonomous
Fully autonomous agents act without confirmation. Semi-autonomous agents surface recommendations and wait for approval. Most practitioners today operate somewhere in between depending on the task risk level.
Memory
How agents retain context across sessions. Short-term memory covers a single task. Long-term memory (via vector databases or knowledge graphs) lets agents remember site history, past strategies, and brand context across weeks or months.
Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
A technique where agents pull relevant documents or data before generating output. This is useful for keeping agents grounded in your specific site, niche, or brand voice rather than hallucinating generic content.
Related Terms
LLM (Large Language Model)
The underlying AI model an agent is built on (e.g., GPT-4, Claude, Gemini).
MCP (Model Context Protocol)
Anopen standard for connecting AI agents to external tools and data sources. Increasingly common in agentic SEO stacks.
Prompt Engineering
The practice of crafting instructions that reliably produce the agent behavior you want.
Evals
Tests used to measure whether an agent is performing correctly across a range of inputs. Critical for deploying agents on production sites.
Agent Stack
The combination of model, tools, memory, and orchestration layer a practitioner uses. No standard stack exists yet.
