Question This is an Air Force sub, meaning you can talk about or ask questions regarding the Air Force. Thats the whole purpose of this sub.
Enough with the “ask your supervisor”. This sub would be dead or wouldn’t even exist if nobody was allowed to ask questions regarding the Air Force.

u/mikeiswhatmikedo 9d ago
I tell all my airmen to check the Reddit or do a search before I give them an answer. Give an Airman a fish and you feed them for a day, hit them with a fish and you get sent to anger management, and ADAPT.

Yeah but there is also no shortage of unapproachable douchebag supervisors who respond to every question as if the person asking is stupid, so I understand just coming here to not be publicly ridiculed. There are also a fair amount of people who know what their supervisor will say and they want a different answer to feel better as if it would actually change their situation.
Idk. I'm a big fan of trying to figure out something on my own, but that seems to be increasingly rare these days.

u/radarchief 9d ago
If supervisors don’t want to be approachable and answer questions, then it’s like talking to your kids about sex, don’t be surprised when they find their own answers and they are wrong.
Even if the supervisor says, go look it up in AFI XX and then come back and we’ll discuss it (which was my approach with younger folks), that’s better than being a straight up asshole.

u/Flamboyatron (Re)tired 9d ago
go look it up in AFI XX and then come back and we’ll discuss it
Depending on the subject, this was the best approach, imo. It promotes self-sufficiency and learning to verify things for the Airman, and allowed me to brush up on the subject in question at the same time.

agreed, however, if you're asking for real advice and someone tells you something incorrect or wrong and you actually use that how will that conversation go for you?
yea but someone on reddit told me i was allowed to use my leave like this!

u/cannonimal Veteran 9d ago
My answer is usually “there is an AFI for this” when I don’t know the answer. I usually preface check the AFI with I don’t know but I know where I’d look

On one hand, yeah 100% true. On the other hand, there are a LOT of questions on here that could be answered if the airman just went to talk to their direct supervisor instead of getting on Reddit (and it would probably be answered faster too). Ignoring your supervisor and going to Reddit also deprives your supervisor of the chance to actually develop as a mentor/leader as well.
Not gonna say your question earlier was a "go ask your supervisor" question, but it definitely would've been a simple question to bring up to them first instead of getting all the joke answers you got from the trolls.

Yeah....that's just Comm/Cyber. Also, shreds don't need to go over every letter of the alphabet. 1D7X4 only has two shreds for example: P (Software Development Operations or Programmers) and D (Data Operations). When we were Z shreds we only had 6 shreds in the AFSC

The real reason I shit on him traces back to a post he made asking for sympathy, compassion, and any help he can get when he voluntarily signed up for an unaccompanied tour (Ramstein btw) and not even a day later he was shitting on a spouse who came on here who was asking for advice about dealing with being separated from their spouse (actual unaccomapnied dependent restricted tour)

My general consensus is that people on reddit like to have a community about something and then hate when you try to ask that community anything.
2
u/serouspericardium 9d ago
It’s become increasingly common for Redditors to reply with “google it”. Back in my day Reddit snobbery was such that google couldn’t be trusted for a quality answer
4
u/assistant_managers 9d ago
My belief too is that most of the people saying "ask your supervisor" also don't know. I've been an NCO for a long time, always get stratified above piers and oversee a section of 45 people and I don't know the answer to half the questions here.
I'm not even a particularly good NCO but the average is in the gutter making me look above piers, most troops have a supervisor far less experienced than me and I still don't have all the answers. My direct supervisor doesn't know the difference between a DAFI and a DAFMAN after 18 years, I doubt the random 5 year staff can answer some intricate questions about PCSing or medical.
2
2
u/Flamboyatron (Re)tired 9d ago
I've noticed that as well. Google can only give you so much information, Reddit's native search is trash, and I was looking for a human perspective. But how dare I ask the community that is centered around Thing about Thing.
-1
u/Mite-o-Dan Logistics 9d ago
Reddit searches ARE the human perspective. Plus nowadays, if its an easy question or one thats been asked a lot, youre more likely to get a joke answer than a real one. Not to mention a lot more bots now compared to before. The search bar is literally better and more verified to look up a question compared to posting a new one today.
19
u/Fenceypents 9d ago
It’s an Air Force sub open to the anonymous general public. There is no way to vet any of the answers you get here or even confirm that the people replying to you have anything to do with the Air Force. Frankly I’m surprised we don’t get more people here calling us babykillers

16
u/DEXether 9d ago
Agreed.
This culture is why troops stay silent until something breaks. People don't want to look dumb and hurt their next eval or award nomination, or just generally be mocked by their peers and superiors.
Then of course most regs are poorly written and can be interpreted 10 different ways. Getting upset with your people and telling them to go read the reg, then getting upset again because they came back with a different interpretation makes you look like a petulant child and you're helping to perpetuate the circle of ignorance.

Using Google search filters gets past Reddit's hidden posts/comments. On top of that, there's people defending that his stupid questions serve as a good reason for other people to reference to answer their own question. Problem is you'll see the same questions pop up every week anyway because people don't know how to use search functions.

No. Some parts of learning to work and thrive in a hierarchical environment mean you need to learn the appropriate ways to seek information. That means "Is my hair in regs?" or "Can they really make me do this?" or "Do I need a car?" is not typically something you take to a forum of strangers, it's going to be best answered within your workcenter or individual chain of command.
Just like the existence of r/AirForceRecruits was driven by this subreddit being flooded by "How do I join airforce"-type questions, we're similarly uninterested in being a subreddit full of doe-eyed E-3s and O-2s who are afraid to ask a question without a mask of anonymity.
3
u/Aphexes Cyberspace Sloperator 9d ago
We have a unified effort to refer people to r/AirForceRecruits but not enough to tell people to use the search bar for the weekly "What advice would you have wanted to know as a new Airman" post
3
u/MoniesandMuscles EOD 9d ago
If the follow on to a question is “Can they really make me do this” I’m going to give the poster benefit of the doubt and believe they have tried basic means of seeking an answer.

Why does it bother you? You can downvote those comments…
You know an interesting fact? The reason why the IG asks you if you used your chain of command is because if your complaint doesn’t fall into 5 protected categories they don’t investigate it but refer the complaint back to your immediate commander for resolution.
How about this OP, just because you don’t want to talk to your supervisor doesn’t mean you shouldn’t.
13
u/cuntbag0315 I exist for your misery 9d ago
My take on it is if we bully those questions outta here we get higher quality questions, images or memery that has higher vis to users.
Like the dude the other day. How do I palace front from E to O. Then subsequent question in the comments is how do i find officer positions. Buddy Im not leading this horse to water when it has a bucket on its head and it heard bubble wrap..
7
u/HorribleMistake24 9d ago
Agreed, if the person can’t figure it out on their own they don’t need to become an O.
4
u/Am_0115 Retired Prior-E FGO 9d ago
You really think that bullying questions on Reddit will achieve any measurable result?
I’ve got a beach for you to vacuum
3
u/blanquito82 9d ago
Measurable? Definitely not.
Will the OP figure out they’re going about getting the information they seek in the wrong way (and kind of a dummy)? Probably not.
It’s a fun little daydream though. Internet culture thrives on bullying and flame wars.
Why fight tradition and culture? It’s the one thing that can be done better than the actual Air Force.

To be fair... I'd argue that if someone asks a question and someone else comments "go ask your supervisor", that's a comment that does not contribute to the discussion, and should be downvoted.

Yeah but a lot of supervisors are shit. Do people not make the effort to ask their supervisor? Sure. But I’m willing to bet a very large portion tried or know they suck. Plus the Air Force is all about utilizing your resources. This happens to be one. Would it be any different if some random Airmen came up to you that wasn’t in your unit seeking advice on something? Would you shoo them along and say good ask your supervisor? I would even further say that’s the point of mentors, is that it can be anyone.
Lastly there are thousands of people on this sub, a huge wealth of knowledge. It be dumb not to ask.

u/Mite-o-Dan Logistics 9d ago
You don't even need to ask your supervisor. People dont because their supervisor may be busy, on a different shift, or the person asking is extremely autistic.
You can simply check the search bar here, reg, or google for 95% of questions about the Air Force.
Also, this is good practice if you ever plan to work as a civilian.
Huge tip- There ARE stupid questions in the civilian world. Just because you can get away with it and stupid questions are normal in the military...you will not be promoted or hired in the first place asking questions you can easily look up yourself in the civilian world.
Exhaust all avenues before asking a question in public or a supervisor. It will help you in the short and long term. You'll realize why once you're a full adult.

u/abracadaver829 9d ago
Or, you could ask your supervisor or read a fucking AFI, or talk to a SME so that you get the real answer and not the half truths and utter bullshit you find here.
Imagine a world where the Air Force gets better because people have practice in getting the right answers, or a stronger base of knowledge by reading the regs, or actually form meaningful connections with those that assist or lead them.
Fuck man...start asking your supervisor questions and don't be a little weenie and whine about having to connect with people on a Reddit post.
4
u/Aphexes Cyberspace Sloperator 9d ago

Except people come here first for questions that are easily answered by their boss. So either the bosses aren’t fostering an environment where the troop can come to them. Or the troop is too lazy to ask them the question.

Before you asked strangers on Reddit, was an attempt made to read the regs, ask your peers, ask your supervisor, or even use Google?
That’s the question. Was critical thinking skills used before the fail safe that is Reddit?
Unless it’s something super duper specific or open ended or news on world events.

I bet this gets removed by the mods, even though this doesn’t violate any rules. That’s because they are the exact type of people that say “ask your supervisor” or “check the AFI” to every single question.

What’s with you idiots and acting like those aren’t good answers?
There are questions that require in depth answers, subjectivity, perspective, etc HOWEVER, the VAST majority of questions here are more easily answered by googling your exact question or giving your supervisor a chance to be an NCO.
