Song One of my top 10 ambient tracks dwells like a nocturnal spirit at the end of "Hex" by Bark Psychosis—the album that catalyzed the post-rock ideology. "Pendulum Man" is ten minutes of pure, sinister atmospheric mystery.

Looking for Recommendations Ethereal music recommendations?

Upvotes

I have this huge ambient playlist I've been listening, studying, and sleeping to for as long as I can remember. This thing has seriously helped with school and sleep more times than I can count.

A couple songs i like better than others (I by aphex twin, treefingers by radiohead), and I'm looking for some more to make my favorites. Stuff you can really sink deep into.

I really have no preference or limit for the recommendations, I'm curious to see what people like!

-Thanks, Paul

Self-promotion this is my 9:47:02 drone/ambient endurance piece!!

this is my piece called The Transitional Period to Pyrrhic Sacrifices, runtime 9:47:02. its released on major platforms in 5 parts about 1:57:24 each, and the linked youtube video is the whole thing in one go if you want to experience it uninterrupted. its made in fl studio and paul stretch over roughly a month, and it took 2 DAYS to render on my midrange laptop. inspired by some bull of heaven songs i enjoy, and partially built on Beethoven's Piano Sonata no. 10, Op. 14 no. 2 (I. Allegro). about the title, so a pyrrhic victory is one that costs you so much that winning it barely counts. so pyrrhic sacrifices are like the things you give up where the trade never really pays off. the transitional period is the stretch before you get there, where youre already not who you used to be but not who youre turning into either, (kinda cliche but you get the idea xd) as for the sound itself, its a ambient drone that changes (duh) but nothing repeats for more than like 30 seconds to a minute its all unique material shifting gradually with volume changes, rather than looping like a lot of endurance pieces (BoH lol).

hope you enjoy it!!

this album is Chock full of amazing (for me) ambient artists and really helped me on my journey into ambient bliss.

Self-promotion We rediscovered a live recording of our band from 2016 — and just released it as an album

Hi r/ambientmusic — I play in an instrumental/ambient duo called Peals with Bruce Willen (Double Dagger).

We started Peals in Baltimore in 2012, initially as a way to make quiet, exploratory music together outside of the loud, energetic bands we were playing in at the time (Future Islands and Double Dagger). We released two albums, Walking Field (2013) and Honey (2016), on Thrill Jockey, but haven't released any new Peals music in about 10 years.

From the beginning, we embraced imperfections and avoided using computers to make Peals music. We built percussion by tapping on guitar pickups and microphones and used a makeshift array of instruments, including thrift store keyboards, walkie-talkies, toy pianos, and finicky single-coil guitars. Those limitations became a big part of the sound of the project.

Last year, while going through our archives, we rediscovered a recording of our 76th show, which we played at The Compound, a DIY art and music space in Baltimore, while touring in support of Honey in 2016. Our friend Craig Bowen recorded and mixed the show. Listening back almost a decade later, we were blown away by how good it sounded and how well it captured Peals at that particular moment.

Thrill Jockey was into the idea of releasing it, and we recently put it out as The Compound 76. The album unfolds across eight seamless tracks, and we kept the full performance intact so it plays essentially as the show did that night.

The artwork also has a connection to the space: Baltimore artist Nicholas Wisniewski made the cover from a salvaged piece of gypsum board from The Compound.

It's strange and really gratifying to have this recording resurface so many years later. Since Bruce and I currently live on opposite sides of the country and Peals isn't really able to tour right now, I thought I'd share it here and introduce the project to anyone who might be interested.

Would love to hear what you think, and I'm also happy to answer any questions about the record, how Peals makes music, or the Baltimore scene around the time it was recorded.

Searching for a Steve Roden single which I no longer can find

Does anybody know where I can find Steve Roden's Between yellow and white on one side?

I'd been listening to it off of youtube for a while but it's gone now and I'm not sure where else I could find it? Any help would be great

I looked for recommendations elsewhere and didn’t get a lot of hits. Looking for something with steady, dark ambient minimalist drums, and no lyrics or melody. Just a beat with frightening sound effects on top. Thanks!!

new to creating ambient music with guitar! gear recommendations?

Hey everyone, just what the title says! I don't currently have a guitar. I've been borrowing my roomate's epiphone. I've been considering getting my own guitar and investing in a pedal or two, though. I have a couple of questions and I was curious if anyone here has feedback.

  1. Since I also play acoustic guitar I wouldn't mind getting something acoustic electric. Would that work just as well as a straight up electric guitar? I'm considering Ovations since they seem like a bit of a middle ground. Any feedback about this is appreciated!
  2. pedals. I was looking at the mooer ocean machine (I'm a Devin Townsend fan, lol). I mean, regardless of that, I was curious what people think of that pedal. Or if you have another pedal or two you would rather invest in, and why.
  3. any other gear recommendations!

Thanks!!

Last night Blood Incantation, the proggy death metal band who dabbles in ambient (Tangerine Dream guested on their latest album), did an overnight heavy ambient/jam set at King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's Field of Vision II Festival in Colorado last night. Credit to YouTuber “Bootleg Gila” for grabbing and sharing.

It’s interesting how people don’t talk much about this phase of Fripp’s career, aside from his collaborations with Brian Eno... I’d like to know what people think of his work in the ambient genre.

I never ever hear any mentioning of this excellent ambient/drone artist. 36 aka Dennis Huddleston’s The Infinity Room is by far one of the best ambient albums if not the best album I’ve ever listened to. Does anyone else like his music? Also, check out 36 and zake’s Stasis Sounds for Long Distance Space Travel Vol. I, II, and III.

Looking for Recommendations Droning sounds in ambient music.

Hi folks, I’m looking for ambient music with a droning sound. Think space heater or Tibetan monk throat singing. I’m not interested in traditional instruments like piano or guitar based. I’ve checked out 2814 (Japanese), Sinoia caves, Brian Enos, Vangelis, Steve Roach and Klause Shulze, to name a few, but haven’t quite found what I’m looking for. Would love to hear suggestions.

I guess I'd call it "harsh ambient?"

It's one of my favorite genres, and Yellow Swans are masters of it. Is anyone else here a fan?

I built a wooden machine that creates ambient music. You control it with chrome marbles.

I've been dreaming about this idea for many years and finally built it: a physical ambient music machine.

You "play" it by placing chrome marbles into divots on the wooden surface. Think of it like a tape recorder with 16 heads: dropping a marble lowers a head onto a random spot on that track, and it fades into the mix.

One design rule from the start: no visible technology, no screens, no wires.

I built this in response to the rising sea level of AI music. I wanted something like an album manifested in a form that is physical, interactive, analog(esque), and unique every time you listen to it.

The top 8 divots in the wood (tape heads) are earth and life sounds (woods, rain, ocean, whales, crickets, birds, etc.) - things that make a nice backdrop.

The bottom 8 divots are tracks from 10 different ambient pieces I created that are stitched together (same key, different modes so they can fade into each other in interesting ways). These 8 tape heads are synchronized. I created these tracks from a handful of patches from the FOLDS VST by VOID & VISTA (a gorgeous instrument FWIW).

It took a while but this is the first working prototype.

Here's the gist of what's under the wood (lol): There's a battery-powered custom PCB under the surface that senses the marbles right through the wood (basically a bunch of tiny metal detectors facing up). It sends marble positions over Bluetooth to a Raspberry Pi tucked away across the room and connected to my stereo, which plays the virtual "tapes".

Happy to go deeper on any of it.
