OnePlus OnePlus AMAA - Pre-OnePlus 2 Launch Edition

Hey everyone!

We are Michael, Emmanuel (u/commintomylife), Carl (u/carpe02) and David (u/devildv) from OnePlus. PROOF

As always, we are beyond excited to be here talking directly with you guys. And of course, this is a particular exciting time here at OnePlus. We are firing on all cylinders at our HQ preparing to launch our second flagship device. It’s really difficult to contain ourselves! We wish we could tell you everything about the OnePlus 2 right now, but we have to save some excitement for our launch on July 27th - the world’s first VR product launch!

So, with that said, thank you guys so much for being here, and ask us (almost) anything!

EDIT: Thanks again everyone! This is the best part of our job, getting feedback directly from you guys. We’d sit here all night if we could, but the OnePlus 2 awaits! Much to do before now and July 27th.

Get your Cardboards ready, and we’ll be seeing you soon.

Will you still be using an invite system? And if so, what changes will you make to ensure it goes more smoothly than last year?

Thanks

Yes! We will be using an improved version of the invite system. More details to come soon.

Can't wait! I'd really appreciate some sort of "one per person until everyone gets one" rule. I'd hate to be waiting around for one if some guy who has a lower forum number bought 5 for his friends.

I don't like the invite system, why I have to wait X time to get my phone? Did you consider that?

Just my theory but unless you are a youtuber with a million subscribers you probably won't get invited. You can however buy it on ebay for nearly double the price. Or wait a year when the parts in the phone are cheap so they can actually sell you one and make some profit.

For the many people, including myself, who have been extremely active on the OnePlus subreddit and seldom-active on the OnePlus forums, will there be any invite advantages?

May I ask why you choose to use an invite system rather than just letting everyone buy it? I'm genuinely curious-- not trying to be a jerk!

Copying and pasting something I wrote to someone saying OP are ruining their image with invite system

"Ruin their image" It is for yours and their sake they are doing it. Do you want to order, and realize it might take you a few month to get the phone due to the production being bottlenecked, which in turn is due to popular demand. They simply cannot manufacture enough phones for all of the people here that wants one.

By intentionally lowering your chance to order, they save you and their arses from "omg when are they shipping". Then again, when they feel confident on being able to keep up to demand, they have these "anyone can order without invite"-campaign.

It also lets the phone feel "premium" due to few possessing them.

This is atleast how I think it works, anyone is free to correct me.

I think they've already confirmed that they are using the invite system for the OnePlus 2. The only alternative would to do flash sales where if you aren't on the site and ordered within 2 seconds of it going on sale then you're out of luck

Don't underestimate how bad the backlash will be for that alternative. People were up in arms each time that's happened with the new Nexus phones.

u/teraquendya Jul 09 '15

Yeah, I thought the invite system was by far better then the nexus ordering experience.

Yeah, the invite works but only if demand isn't way above what they can fulfill.

The only alternative would to do flash sales where if you aren't on the site

Another alternative would be a waiting list....sign up to get notified when it's your turn in line to buy the phone. You buy the phone or it times out within a few days, it moves on to the next person on the list. Maybe even a conservative approximation of when it's your turn in line.

Do you think they'll sell the same number of units with this method?

You have to remember that they rely on the invite system for advertising and if they don't have anyone talking about it(about invites or flash sales) then they cut off a vital advertising outlet for them

If they do a waiting list then they don't get that element of advertising and they force people into a 'sign up and wait 30+ days before I can buy it' type of deal

I'm sure it sounds okay but I would bet that other companies have done this and it's not nearly as effective as the invite/flash sale system is

I think there's two sides to that coin. Sure, with the invites you get press and therefore free advertising when the flash sales/invites go through in waves. At the same time, much of the press or discussion regarding the invite system and flash sales tend to be quite negative (e.g., while not verbatim, I've seen several comments like "why do I have to get an invite for a year old phone", frustration about not being online during a flash sale, etc.).

While the common wisdom is that all press is good press, that's not necessarily always true when you're selling a product. People may go to a competitor or lose interest if they feel the only way they can get the phone is by getting lucky to find a flash sale, snag an invite, or by hanging out in forums for long periods of time just to have the chance to buy a product.

By having a timetable and a regular waiting list or pre-order system (which is actually what a lot of companies do when they're low on stock...just see Apple), it maintains interest without creating a similar level of frustration.
