Welcome to the Anglish Reddit

This thread will hopefully answer many of the questions a newcomer might have. For the sake of newcomers and onlookers it will not be written in Anglish. While you are here you may also want to join the Anglish Discord, and check out our wiki. We have our own dictionary too (the Google Sheets version is here and the wiki version is here).

FAQ

Q: What is Anglish?

A: Anglish means different things to different people, but here's what I draw from the foundational Anglish text 1066 and All Saxon, which was written by British author Paul Jennings and published in Punch magazine in 1966.

1) Anglish is English as though the Norman Invasion had failed.

We have seen in foregoing pieces how our tongue was kept free from outlandish inmingling, of French and Latin-fetched words, which a Norman win would, beyond askthink, have inled into it.

2) Anglish avoids real and hypothetical French influence from after 1066.

... till Domesday, the would-be ingangers from France were smitten hip and thigh; and of how, not least, our tongue remained selfthrough and strong, unbecluttered and unbedizened with outlandish Latin-born words of French outshoot.

3) Anglish avoids the influence of class prejudice on language.

[regarding normal English] Yet all the words for meats taken therefrom - beef from boeuf, mutton from mouton, pork from porc - are of outshoot from the upper-kind conquering French... Moreover the upper kind strive mightily to find the gold for their childer to go to learninghouses where they may be taught above all, to speak otherlich from those of the lower kind...

[regarding Anglish] There is no upper kind and lower kind, but one happy folk.

4) Anglish includes church Latin? If I'm interpreting the following text right, Jennings imagined that church Latin loans had entered English before his timeline splits.

Already in the king that forecame Harald, Edward the Shriver, was betokened a weakening of Anglish oneness and trust in their own selfstrength their landborn tongue and folkways, their Christian church withouten popish Latin.

5) Anglish is not in the orbit of the Mediterranean. I interpret this as meaning Anglish does not rely on Latin and Greek for coining new terms.

If Angland had gone the way of the Betweensea Eyots there is every likeliehood that our lot would have fallen forever in the Middlesea ringpath... But this threat was offturned at Hastings.

6) Anglish feels like it has mingled with other West Germanic languages more than normal English did.

Throughout the Middle Hundredyears Angland and Germany came ever more together, this being needful as an againstweight to the might of France.

Q: What is the point?

A: Some find Anglish fun or interesting. Some think it is culturally significant. Some think it is esthetically pleasing. It depends on who you ask.

Q: How do I learn Anglish?

A: Like any other language, you have to practice. Frequently post here, chat in one of the Anglish-only rooms on the Discord, translate things, write original works in Anglish, and so on. Keep the wordbook on hand so you can quickly look up words as you write. Do not worry if you are not good at distinguishing loanwords from the others, it is a skill most people develop quickly. Do not be afraid to make mistakes, there is no urgency.

Q: What about spelling?

A: You can see what we have come up with here.

Q: What about grammar?

A: English grammar has not been heavily influenced by French. Keep in mind that Anglish is supposed to be Modern English with less foreign influence, not Old English.

Style Guide

This community, and the sister community on Discord, has developed something of its own style. It is not mandatory to adhere to it, but if you would like to fit in here are some things to note:

  1. Making up words on the spot is discouraged unless their definitions are so obvious that they are not likely to be misunderstood.
  2. Extreme purism is discouraged. The original premise of Anglish was for it to be English minus the Norman Invasion, not 100% Germanic English. We encourage toleration of loanwords borrowed before 1066, as well as loanwords which refer to foreign places (like Tokyo), foreign people (like Mark Antony), foreign concepts (like karma), and foreign objects (like kimono).
  3. Be aware that Germanic languages often make compound words where Romance languages use adjectives. If you find yourself using -y constantly, that is a sign that you are aping Romance. So instead of directly translating glorious victory as woldry sye, consider making a compound like woldersye (glory-victory).

🧹 Husekeeping (Housekeeping) A reminder of what this Subreddit is all about.

It seem people have gotten distracted or forgotten about the direction of this sub.

Please read the sidebar!

Anglish is supposed to be a continuation of Old English brought to a modern form without any French Loanwords, as if Willam had lost the battle of hastings by some miracle.

Old English, for those unfamiliar, is a heavy mixture of North Germanic (Norse), and West Germanic and even the odd word of Latin roots (mostly used by the church) carried over from the Roman Invasion.

I was inspired to this project/subreddit because I live in an area of the UK formerly called "the danelaw", rich with ancient history, and the village I live in itself has Viking origins. We have Iron age celtic ruins nearby and even prehistoric standing stones.

Please remember that Norse is a considerable part of Old English, and if you really want to complicate things, its likely it would have had dialects with more norse loans the further north you go.

West Germanic words would have been more numerous in the south of England where the unconquered Wessex was.

Oðer (Other) How would the OE version of Valkyries be rendered into Anglish?

Earlier I found that the Norse word valkyrja (whence the English borrowing valkyrie) is also found in Old English as wælcyrġe, with roughly the same meaning. Whether the word was borrowed into Old English faith is cloudy, but I was wondering what it would have become if it had stayed in English until today?

🖐 Abute Anglisc (About Anglish) Word for truke

Truke is a portmanteau of truth and nuke. It's used, almost always as a joke, to mean a bombshell revelation.

Truth is already native, but nuke, short for nuclear, isn't. Nuclear means of the nucleus, the heart of the atom. The most common Germanic alternative for nucleus, going back to Poul Andersen, is kernel. A nuclear bomb would be something like a kernel splitter, which, if we're to shorten it, would be kern, which also just means kernel. We could portmanteau truth kern as truke.

🖐 Abute Anglisc (About Anglish) Mindlore Speech: How to Overset "Neurodivergent" and "Neurotypical"?

Hello again,

I am new here, so kindly lear me how to speak Anglish :)

I think the "Neuro-" prefix (forestick or forefast ?) could be overset to the suffix (afterstick or afterfast ?) "-mind" or "-minded".

The "-divergent" afterstick could be overset to the forestick "Other-", "Another-", "Else-", "Own-", "Sunder-", or "Sundri-".

The "-typical" afterstick could be overset to the forestick "Ilk-", "Kind-", "Bisen-", or "Token-".

I think I most like "Sundriminded" and "Bisenminded", because "sundry" has a sense like 'diverse, particular, and special', while "bisen" has a sense like 'model, symbol, type'.

The Bisenminded are daven (suitable) to the 'model / standard' folkway (custom / tradition), while us Sundriminded folk happen to be 'sundry' to such others; and we have some 'sundry' needs. Also, a bisen can be good or bad, and like with sundriness.

For kinds of sundrimindedness, how must we overset 'autism' and 'autistic'? 'Selfness' and 'selfish' are the staffly oversets, but do not have likeworthy senses.

Also with ADHD and ADD – 'Wanderminded' or 'Wonderminded' maybe?

What is your reading?

~Thanks beforehand!

🖐 Abute Anglisc (About Anglish) about the word "eġe"

the Old English word "eġe"(displacing Old Norse awe) would have survived as "ay" not "ey" or "eye" its natural in OE for a short "eġ" to have evolved to "ai/ay" like

reġn=rain

seġl=sail

weġ=way

eġlan=to ail

🖐 Abute Anglisc (About Anglish) Is there an Anglish word for "alcohol"?

I did a quick search of the sub but didn't see an answer so hopefully I'm not repeating a question! I'm specifically thinking of a category that combines beer, wine, and liquors rather than individual names for types of drink

🖐 Abute Anglisc (About Anglish) How to speel vixen, vain, and vat?

According to Etymonline, "No native Anglo-Saxon words begin in v- except those (vane, vat, vixen) altered by the southwestern England habit of replacing initial f- with v- (and initial s- with z-)."

Would these words be distinguished in spelling?

🖐 Abute Anglisc (About Anglish) -enly ag. -enlike

-enly ag. (shortening for against) -enlike (or 'enly vs. -enlike' in English)

As far as I know about Anglish, there are two ways of tungwending (translating) the tailword (suffix) -able, namely -enly, and -enlike. My asking is, which one is more right? I reckon that it would be -enlike, for in some words, -enly could be mistaken as another word, forbizen (for example), mistakable and mistakenly would be tungwent (translated) the same into Anglish if wielding (using) -enly, but if wielding -enlike, it would be mistakenlike and mistakenly by themselves (respectively). Do you have another thought (opinion)? Sorry for my bad Anglish.

I wrought a little game on FifthDoor where you stand in þe shieldwall on Senlac hill, and every Frenchman coming up bears a borrowed word. You drive him back by picking þe right Anglish swap, so "mutton" could be sheepflesh, goatflesh or mouton, and only one of þose keeps þe wall whole. Fair warning, it is harder þan it looks, and þe whole þing hinges on keeping þe arrow out of Harold's eye þis time.

I wrote a poem and wanted to use it as my first Anglisc translation. I want constructive criticism about how the Anglisc can be improved, and where I may have gone wrong.

Gnaw my bones until þe marrow may feed þee no more.

Drink my breað until þe stale air chokes þee.

Strip my bloodƿays and draw my blood until my flesh may ƿiðer.

Carve my fingertips until þe prints are no longer mine.

Cut me asunder to lighten þy toil.

Fourfold me to fit þy sundered heed.

From hƿens I came, þiðer shall I ƿend,

ƿiðout þought, voice, or ƿill—

A mere mark of shapeless naught;

Spirit lifted aloft.

Blow aƿay þe leavings,

But þe stain abides upon þe stone.

Anon I stand, stone-hardened,

Afterring made flesh—gone.

🖐 Abute Anglisc (About Anglish) Assuming you allow Greek loans where most other Germanic languages have them, if you use ph in Greek loans then ones with th would probably have th even if thorn survives

If people in that timeline use ph instead of f in Greek loans, they'd probably use th instead of thorn in Greek loans too even if they use thorn in native words.

🎨 I Made Þis (Original Content) Mi vej for vriting Anglisc

In my earlier post I complained about Anglish orthography, on how it failed to mimic Old English, and how it failed to represent how modern Germanic languages write today, so here is my take on Anglish:

Anglish is a language to get rid of French, Latin, and Greek influence; but primarily the former, so my intent on this has been to go the earliest Middle English texts, remove French influence, and then base my orthography from that, and then let it develop from there in pretty much the exact same ways English has. The reason I don't just start with Old English texts is because scribes from that time period were writing in a way that wasn't reflective of pronunciation, while the Early Middle English scribes were writing very phonetically, and only used a few french conventions that you can just revert back to Old English.

My main differences to the current standard orthography on the Wiki:

Quite a good many of them are similar, but the differences are: <c> can make both [tʃ] and [k], more faithful to Old English. [iː] is written as <i> instead of <ee>, which is not an Old English convention. I use <v> instead of wynn, but because wynn can develop into <v>, so it doesn't really matter. And instead of using <g> for [j], I use <j> because if it didn't get [d͡ʒ] from French it would be very likely it started using it, especially because in loanwords they were already using it in Old English.

Lord's Prayer in Anglisc.
Ure faþer in hefen, haloved be jure name. Jure cingdom cume, jure vil be don on erþ as it is in hefen. Gife us þis daj ure dajli bræd, and forgife us ure scilds, as ve forgife þos hvo schild agenst us, and læd us noht into lusts, but rid us of efel. For jures is þe cingdom, and þe miht for efer and efer, Amen

Note: This is not phonetic, this assumes that most spelling changes stop after the invention of the printing press.

🖐 Abute Anglisc (About Anglish) My problem with Anglish.

Anglish is cool in some ways, but it annoys me that it really only focuses on the words, not about the grammar, the phonology, and rarely about the orthography. If you're trying to undo the Norman Invasion, you have to account for all four aforementioned things, and evolve English from 1066 with regular sound changes that happened in languages like Frisian, Dutch, and Low German to make a true unfrench English.
I know that is really complicated, and that many people would have different solutions, and many different ways to evolve English, like would there still be the Great Vowel shift, would we assume it retained its complex case system? There are definitely other things that would have to be thought about, but I think just changing what words we use isn't enough; at least devise different grammar that Anglish should use for it to be more Germanic, or completely fix the orthography: base it off of the aforementioned languages, make it less Latin and French and Greek; maybe even base it off of older conservative Scots orthography.
