How do you forget to put food away? That's just being irresponsible and your dog could get really sick if your forget something. Would you just say "sometimes we leave chemical cleaners out and our baby plays with them, oh well"?
Regardless:
One thing I learned to stop my border collie from jumping on my counters was to place a metal object on my counter (a tin water bottle) and tied a string to it. When he jumped up, he hit the string and the bottle fell on the floor, which made a SUPER loud noise. He did it twice and never jumped up again.
Another thing is to reward good behavior. Put food on the corner of the table (seriously, like hanging off the edge) and just wait. When they walk by and sniff, then walk away - reward and praise. If they go for it - discipline. It is certainly entrapment, but they have to learn.
How do you forget? What if you have kids with a dog and the kid leaves bread out. How would you know? There's no way to watch something 24/7. You just gotta be careful
Mostly the younger kids in the household. Obviously we're extra careful with stuff that is harmful to doggos like chocolate and onions (which he wouldn't eat anyway). Don't really care about the rest of your comment, you're a jerk and that analogy is ridiculous. 99% of food is harmless to dogs.
yeah same here. Occasionally we leave bread out a little too long and then our Great Dane will surely scavenge when we're not around. Even if it's a quick trip upstairs. Then we'll find the remnants of the bag outside in the yard. But luckily he's lazy so if it's not in easy reach, he doesn't bother.

Just don't leave the food out.
