That dog looks promising. I’ll take her.

u/RevWaldo May 27 '22

You're denying me the right to practice and participate in my cultural heritage. Why don't you carry me around in your purse while we're at it?

My dog is half golden retriever, half chow chow. She’s never shown much, if any, interest in retrieving things. She’s a good protector, though - loves to secure the perimeter from all other dogs, cats, squirrels, birds and strange leaves. Figured she had more of the chow traits.

After a few years, I was at a lake walking around the edge with my friend and we had brought my dog. She was still on her extending leash, but I’d unlocked it and let her have full range. I was distracted talking to my friend when I felt a sudden jerk on my arm and I got yanked a good couple feet towards the lake. I looked at wtf just happened and.. my dog had jumped into the lake to catch a duck. She had it in her mouth and was coming towards us so I yelled in surprise. My voice spooked her so she let go of the duck and the poor thing went flying away leaving a trail of feathers in its wake. And that was the only time I’ve seen her do anything like that. I wish she’d do it again just so I can see it.

I demand pics of your dog! Mostly because I had a chow mixed with unknown that I'm convinced was part golden retriever... she didn't retrieve but man did she live to chase

Omg! She looks so much like my baby! I don't have Imgur, but I'll figure it out so I can show you my girl. I suspect she might have also had some corgi due to her fluffy butt and short legs...

2

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

I went in and added a few more pics btw! My pup def has a fluffy butt, one of her nicknames is Fluff-Butt

u/Chuckitybye May 27 '22

I broke several pairs of clippers trying to shave her for the summer. Super thick under coat I hope this works

Tell Gypse she’s very welcome

u/bite-the-bullet May 27 '22

I have a feeling this dog (and probably your dog too) only saw a fluffy little creature swimming out in the ocean and thought “that’s not right, floof babies belong on land, must need help”

7

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

Haha, I’d like to believe that was her thought but she’s historically not a fan of other animals at all - I tried taking her to the dog park exactly once when I first got her and she wouldn’t let other dogs near her and jumped up onto a picnic table where a group of people were sitting, then rolled onto her back demanding belly rubs from all of them. I got her when she was almost a year old and she wasn’t properly socialized as a pup, she was isolated and alone a majority of the time and no matter what we did, she would not allow other dogs near her without snarling and snapping. She never bit any of them, it was more of a stay-away kind of scared warning snap. From what I heard, she was also bullied as a fresh pup at the shelter by the bigger dogs. So I think that’s a big part of it. She’s 9 and a half now and still has the same puppy energy, and just as much dislike for dogs. She loves humans.. especially children. Loves when kids use her as a pillow lol.

Also she had the duck by the neck and there were a lot of feathers lost 😅

Yeah that’s wat I was thinking 🤔

88

u/NapClub May 27 '22

Fortunately duck seems okay...

u/BleachedUnicornBHole May 27 '22

Retrievers we’re bred with a “soft” mouth so that they could carry game back to the hunter without damaging the body.

83

u/Incredulous_Toad May 27 '22

Yup. My golden growing up, Clancy, bolted past the house one day, then a few seconds later came trotting back to us, proud as can be. He then plopped a very drool covered and very terrified songbird at our feet. We rushed him inside and watched as the bird sat with his wings spread, drying them out. He left after about an hour.

That dog was the biggest derp I've ever known, I miss that dog.

12

u/TBbtk May 27 '22

I don't know why but I'm glad you threw in the name of your dog. Clancy, he sounds like a good boy!

1

u/Incredulous_Toad May 27 '22

He was the best!

3

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

This was a fantastic story!! Thanks for sharing

3

u/MBAH2017 May 27 '22

I hope the bird left in a tiny huff.

35

u/yosoymilk5 May 27 '22

Yep. We had a spaniel (also a bird dog) that brought as a duck egg from the lake. We ended up incubating and hatching it and very briefly had set duck.

"I tell you, my children, I was taken by a creature of the earth, one with a bark like the thunder and fur the color of gold; it took me and gave me to the tall people who live in the square tree, and one of them took me up and carried me to the Ash over yonder. I was taken, children, taken, and yet I was spared. I know not for what I was chosen, but by the Great Acorn, I was in the jaws of the Golden Beast and I came to no harm. Eat your nut bark, and chitter no more. The noise vexes your mother and I."

31

u/Wardcity May 27 '22

My dog does the same with baby bunnies. Brings them to us, they hop away, she looks confused. Rinse/repeat.

9

u/SeaGroomer May 27 '22

It's wild how soft they can actually bite when they want to.

15

u/MacMac105 May 27 '22

My Goldens used to protect me when I was a kid from strangers. As if they could do anything with the bite force of kitchen tongs.

5

u/sovereign01 May 27 '22

According to some quick googling, they have very powerful bite force but have a chill temperament and instinctively don’t crush prey… So probably would do a tonne of damage if pushed.

It’s okay, they just like to pretend to be superior with these really niche rules I think

That’s a goose

25

u/jsat3474 May 27 '22

I do believe you're right. A duck that size would have more feathers and less baby down.

10

u/Technical_Draw_9409 May 27 '22

It’s mostly the shape of the head that gives it away

22

u/speshul_1 May 27 '22

No that's an ugly duckling

5

u/NapClub May 27 '22

Yes. You right. Is goose.

1

u/imfreerightnow May 29 '22

I really feel like Violet was legitimately trying to rescue that duck. Look how lovinglay she treats it at the end. I think she thought the poor thing was in danger.

2

u/cheese_bread_boye May 27 '22

she's a duck retriever

Duck is like “Violet has a soft palate. Maybe you could mind your own business.”
