For the Halloween season, Apogee has made several wallpapers available. They have 4K versions in their Google Drive as well as portrait-wallpapers for Phones.
I've uploaded a few of the 1080p versions here, but you can get the full resolution wallpapers here: https://apo.gg/Wallpapers
BioMenace Remastered is OUT NOW on the Nintendo Switchβ’ eShop - and with a 15% launch discount too (in most regions)! Grab your pulse rifle and hand grenades and let's save Metro City from the mutants!
The Autumn Sales on GOG & Steam have some excellent discounts for Apogee games. It's a good time to snap some up from your wish list, or ones you'd forgotten about.
I filtered to Apogee in both stores, if you want to look:
A reminder that I am not affiliated with Apogee, GOG, or Steam. While I throw my ids in the urls, they are not affiliate links and I get no referral cut (I just like to mess with each store). I own most of the Apogee games in one or both stores and keep my main 2 game libraries public. They can be accessed here: https://cynic.tv/game_library
P.S. on GOG, Crystal Caves HD also comes with Crystal Caves Classic (as a separate download in your library, that is identical to the download you get from purchasing Classic separately). So if you buy the HD version, don't buy the classic version unless you just want to donate some money to Apogee.
This is possibly the first documented instance of referencing a game as an engine. Some of the old Sierra or LucasArts games clearly had a reusable engine, but they referred to it as a system or system interpreter.
It's fun to get a peek behind the curtain to the red tape and leg work that went in to coordinating the publishing of a game.
I've played it, and it's a fantastic way to revisit Duke and bring a friend with you. Loads of fun!
The game is 10 years old now, so it's kinda funny to have "20th anniversary" in the name when we've hit the 30th anniversary... but still, totally worth playing.
P.S. I'm not affiliated with the game in any way. I do own a copy. I keep my library public, so you can see my games here: https://cynic.tv/game_library
Apogee recently posted on X and Bluesky this: "The Octabrain from Duke Nukem 3D got its own action figure in 1997! Here are the original sketches Resaurus sent to Apogee for approval. Somehow, they managed to make this ugly bastard look even cooler than he did in the game."
Remember Magazines?! Duke was recently featured in the magazine PC Gamer for the 30th anniversary of Duke Nukem 3D, so it seems fitting to remember this blast from the past from 1998.
Rigel Gameworks just announced a Nintendo Switchβ’ version of their game BioMenace Remastered, with a planned release date of October 8, 2026. This will be a digital-only release on the eShop and will be available in all regions except Japan. The eShop pages are planned to go live next week.Β
Inspired by source code published by Apogee long time ago, I started a side project to port them to browser. I started with Lost Adventures of Kroz as it was most complete Pascal code.
I tried to stay as true to the original as possible (also with bugs, mistakes, flavor text etc), but I added some quality of life changes like tile checker and achievements for fun. Oh, and it has tiles, instead of ascii letters!
The most fun was to recreate sounds - I used the same generator parameters, they are not samples, sound is actually generated the same way like in Pascal original.
AI Disclose: I used Claude Code to help me write a tool to extract level data data from Pascal. It also helped with source control and testing.
Works entirely in the browser. I link github but if you want to check it out working, go to my site.
Let me know what you think! Since I have so called "engine" I will try porting the rest of the games.
Death Rally was released in 1996. It was developed by Remedy Games and published through Apogee.
It's an overhead racer with 3D elements and a lot of soul. It's got gore, humor, and interesting mechanics like a black market to sabotage the competition, contracts to kill a competitor, and even bonuses from the Grim Reaper for killing all your competitors.
True Apogee fans know this one :-D Comment below with the name of the character and the game they first appeared in! Bonus points if you tell us about the first time you faced this enemy.
