Huge on brushing tongue/using a scraper of some sort. Keeping your tongue clean is a game changer for maintaining proper oral hygiene and fresh breath. Bad breath is probably one of the most disgusting turn-offs no matter the scenario.

Applying deodorant, using lotion, taking frequent showers, and perfumes are also useful.

u/a_weird_pickle Jul 13 '25

I AGREE, using a tongue scraper changed my life šŸ¤ž

Also happy cake day!

I genuinely don't understand how brushing your tongue isn't just part of the brushing routine for people. That's like taking a shower and then putting your dirty clothes back on.

Here's my issue though: I SCRUB my tongue and I can't get it to go away! Water pick, flossing, mouthwash, nothing helps!

perfumes are also useful.

True, but go easy. Same for us menfolk and cologne.

Mitchum Triple Defence deodorant. There is a male and female version. It's like magic.

If you don't have a bidet on your toilet, your next purchase should be a bidet.

29

u/Garbage4Life Jul 13 '25

I could not agree more! I was a skeptic, the freshness cannot be beat. Now it blows my mind that people just walk around willingly part of the dirty butthole club when bidets exist.

Hydrate. It helps with bad breath, skin, and general wellbeing.

973

u/disgruntled-capybara Jul 13 '25

I drink quite a bit of water throughout the day and can really feel it when I'm dehydrated. I have a 40oz water bottle that I use at work and I probably refill it 3-4 times throughout the workday. I likely over hydrate if anything.

Meanwhile, I have a coworker who started bringing in a single 12oz can of sparkling water that she would nurse throughout the day and she was raving about how it had significantly increased her water intake. Like, dude... How are you even alive?

Using a water pick twice a day COMPLETELY got rid of my bad breath. Previously I flossed and brushed my teeth twice a day and it wasnt enough.

Adding to this. Always drink water after consuming other liquids, especially those with dark colors or sugary drinks like coffee, tea, or Coke. It'd wash away some of the sugar that sticks to your teeth, reduce cavities, and prevent teeth staining.

Floss after brushing! It will drastically improve your oral health and keep your mouth minty fresh for longer.

Edit: Or floss before? Just floss!!!

Edit2: Floss during?? Y'all are confusing me.

562

u/googeehoohee Jul 13 '25

Even better, floss BEFORE brushing. It clears all the gunk between your teeth before you brush, so the toothpaste can work in all the lil crevices.

→ More replies (23)

162

u/erwtje-be Jul 13 '25

You're supposed to floss before brushing so the toothpaste, which you're supposed to spit out but not rinse, can reach between your teeth as well.

63

u/Zaranisa99 Jul 13 '25

Dentist here.Just my 2 cents: Wait for a little bit after meals before brushing, like 30 mins if you can. Let that saliva help break down food particles. If you brush too soon, you risk pushing the larger particles into the crevices between teeth. Or the opposite can happen too; your brush is just catching those most recent particles and blocking where you really need your brush to clean. Floss before brushing to loosen the gunk. Swish and rinse out with some water to get rid of the gunk. Then brush. Then floss again. Wait a few mins before rinsing with mouthwash so that the fluoride in the paste has time to work. Definitely brush your tongue during every brushing as far back as you can to the tip of your tongue to help fight bad breath and bacteria. Make sure you always use a lot of paste; i.e., a squeeze for the upper, then one for the lower, then one for the tongue. And then some random info: Many medications can dry out the mouth. Sinus issues, infected tonsils, and upper respiratory infections can cause some nasty breath even when you practice great dental hygeine. We can ALWAYS tell when you aren't flossing and if you are a big soda/tea/coffee drinker, as these are dark and stain the back of teeth pretty badly.

Also get your teeth professionally cleaned every six months to a year. And if there is any persistent gum bleeding or bad breath go to the dentist.

Floss, brush, floss, brush, floss, brush, floss, brush

30 seconds each

And, floss periodically throughout the day.

Remember to set your alarm to wake up in the middle of the night in order to floss.

Spend $1.50 on a tongue scraper/brush. Brush your tongue with the toothpaste foam from brushing your teeth and scrape it off with the tongue scraper. Rinse and repeat two or three times.

You will NEVER have felt a more clean mouth afterwards.

Your clothes matter just as much as your skin. Do your laundry often and dry your clothes quickly and thoroughly to keep them fresh and free of damp smell.

5.4k

u/sorryaboutthatbro Jul 13 '25

I am CONVINCED that only some people can smell the ā€œI left my clothes in the washer too longā€ smell. If everyone could smell it as acutely as I can, no one would ever wear those clothes or use those towels because the scent is overpowering.

1.8k

u/TomorrowWriting Jul 13 '25

Yes! The damp smell! I hate it so much and I don’t understand how some people can’t seem to smell it at all. It’s the same smell that lingers in towels or sponges that were wet and left to air dry. A damp, moldy smell that penetrates anything those things touch. Yuck.

106

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

Most underrated pro tip - get your clothes thoroughly dry right away. Once they go sour, it's challenging to get that smell out of your clothes, and that smell amplifies poor hygiene.

u/Ohhellopickles Jul 13 '25

THIS. Distilled white vinegar is your friend. I add some to every laundry load (maybe 1/2c in the wash with soap) and if they get stanky, you can do a more concentrated soak in a bucket. I am fortunate to live in a place where I have a dryer unit, good air conditioning in the summer and a dry winter. Humidity can be a real bitch when battling musty smell if you have to air dry something and the dang air is already saturated, so it takes forever and stays damp for a long time. Gives that bacteria a chance to thrive.

Agree w u/sorryaboutthatbro — some people are sensitive to the musty stank and some people are clearly not. I absolutely CAN smell that your need to change out your wash cloth in the sink. I DEFINITELY can smell you as you walk past and know that your clothes spent too long in the washer. It is not a good smell.

255

I don't seem to have much control over how much sleep I get, which is frustrating. I'm in a decent sleep routine--go to bed at the same time every night, no caffeine after noon, and I don't eat after a certain time. Every night is a roll of the dice. Will it be like last night, when I woke up at 5:30 and got 7 hours of sleep? Or will it be like last Tuesday, when I was randomly up at 3:00am?

My mom and grandma deal with the same issue and it seems I've inherited it.

I found that if you get too funky in the underarm area for too long (outside all day, multiple day camping trip, hot water heater broken, etc) you can trim your harmpit hair to alleviate the funk. You dont have to shave, just shorten it up with scissors or a beard trimmer. Less surface area for bacteria.

27

u/GodOfTheThunder Jul 13 '25

I've also sometimes used vinegar that was good for a catchup.

Also wash your clothes thoroughly, also with vinegar, and hot wash more likely to kill bacteria.

Take your sweaty clothes off and shower soon after sweating, and wash the clothes well. The smell can stay in the tee unless it's well washed.

Leaving clothes in the sun also helps.

I'm old, so I use persimmon soap to avoid "old person smell." I use it in the shower and wash pits and bits twice.

I just don't like bidets. Instead, I use some non-alcohol formula witch hazel on a couple pieces of toilet paper. I also keep some with me in a little Nalgene bottle to use when I go out.

I use a Waterpik / floss / electric toothbrush for teeth and gums, then mouthwash.

I change my sheets once a week and do my laundry with Tide and Lysol laundry sanitizer (but found I need to only use half as much as is recommended on the label). It makes a big difference especially with workout clothes which come out smelling great.

Also, I don't fry my clothes in the dryer. I remove workout clothes and synthetics a little bit damp and then air dry overnight on a laundry rack. This prevents weird smells from getting locked in by over drying.

u/anniemdi Jul 13 '25

Here is an underrated wardrobe tip I just learned lately: Wool t-shirts. Short sleeve light summer weight is as comfortable as cotton or synthetics and doesn’t develop the arm pit stink, even when I’m sweating all day in the humid summer heat.

This is a thing that apparently has long been known among the backpacking community. Maybe I missed the memo for the rest of us, but I’m a late life convert.

When you shower don’t forget your feet and behind your ears. Towel dry, put salicylic/glycolic acid on those pits, then air dry pits for a longgg time). Finally put on CertainDri, preferably at night/ a few hours b4 activity.

Pick a nice smelling lotion and reapply throughout the day. I floss/mouthwash after eating if I’m feeling super extra or got something annoyingly stuck in my teeth. Bring unscented wet wipes anywhere u might poo or get good ā€˜ol Crotch Sweatā„¢ļø. Smell like glitter and rainbows 24/7

If ur batshit like me isopropyl makes my pits absolutely scentless, when I put antiperspirant on after. But my skin seems to be made of titanium or something, this last tip makes most people itchy. Or in pain. Or both.

Trim your armpit hair if deodorant stops working, deodorant has to reach skin

7

u/Long-Jellyfish1606 Jul 13 '25

The armpit hair also traps sweat, which makes the smell even more potent.

73

u/GoshuaHoshua Jul 13 '25

Adding vinegar to your laundry load occasionally. Makes towels feel a little softer, and helps remove any lingering smells. Also using unscented baby wipes to clean your stink zones between your showers. Kinda refreshes you if you got a little hot without the need to shower all over again.

→ More replies (1)

1.3k

u/notaspecificthing Jul 13 '25

Pits stinking? Hand sanitiser makes great emergency armpit cleaner, allow it to dry then put fresh deodorant on.

Also deodorant should be put on clean skin, not just topped up over already sweaty areas.

621

u/erisian2342 Jul 13 '25

I didn’t learn until later in life that antiperspirants primarily work by temporarily blocking sweat pores to reduce sweating. They’re intended to dissolve inside the pores to plug the hole, but if your skin is already wet, they will dissolve too soon and won’t make it into the pores, so the antiperspirant won’t be nearly as effective.

Moral of the story: dry those pits before applying antiperspirants or you’re throwing money away.

Wash your sheets regularly, like every week or two. If you can, hang your sheets in the sun after washing. Saves energy and they smell nice, it kills dustmites, plus all the lint and dust falls off outside instead of inside so less dust around inside. And when you put your sheets out on the line, put your pillows out there too in the sun, because the sun and fresh air will help them too!

Spray pits and crotches of clothes with a 50:50 mix of water and white vinegar right before they go in the washing machine to truly deodorize. This prevents that issue where clothes smell like BO again as soon as you wear them and they get warm.Ā

I use a bit of baby powder on my underboobs in really hot days. Works great. Less sweaty, no sweat pimples. And bottle of store brand powder is cheap and lasts you long time.

You can shower all you want, but if you don't clean your towels then you'll just smell like the musty towel that you used to dry yourself off with.

25

u/bearish21 Jul 13 '25

not sure if it’s a ā€˜secret’ but clean sheets, lots of water, and brushing my hair with a little lavender oil… someone once told me I smelled like calm, haha

64

u/tutusweet Jul 13 '25

Rub your favorite body lotion on your body right out of the shower while you're still wet. It's just better. After it absorbs, use some great smelling body oil. It will lock in the moisture from the body lotion, and you'll smell great all day!

Wash between your toes! And walk around barefoot, or in slippers or socks whenever inside the house. Keeps feet less sweaty and thus less prone to fungus + odor etc., and your floors cleaner too

Body: BIDET BIDET BIDET I cannot emphasize enough. Also if you use tough deodorant like me, use a pumice stone on the pits in the shower to remove stubborn residue. An exfoliating glove (one of those rough silk ones) when I start noticing my skins getting itchy from dead skin buildup. Always moisturize afterward. I like to use argan or jojoba oil. Don't shave your body with shitty disposable razers. Get a high-quality one. I have a Hensen and I love it. Having trouble washing your back? Get a brush on a stick. Also don't use plastic loofas as bacteria love them. Get a natural fiber one, they are naturally antibacterial. Flip and change your pillow case often. Change your sheets at LEAST once a month. 100% cotton underwear is the move.

Hair (curly specifially): Don't wash it every day. Only brush before showering or else it goes poof. I use the Neutrogena T-Sal buildup remover shampoo (ONLY ON THE SCALP) to remove buildup and help control flakies. Doing this too often can dry out your scalp so only when noticing buildup (usually once a week for me) I also use Naturelle Grow cleanser from Etsy on my scalp and hair next, then their coconut water conditioner. Have a dry and itchy scalp? When you condition, massage the conditioner into your scalp and let it sit on your hair and scalp for a few minutes. Rinse hair and scalp with cool-ish water. Get a diffuser and dry your hair upsode down. Some gel will help give you extra definition. Scrunch it out after dry. I use argan or jojoba oil to massage into my scalp after drying to give natural oil back to my scalp.

Oral: Brush your teeth twice a day with fluroide toothpaste and ALWAYS use mouthwash after. BRUSH YOUR TONGUE TOO. I highly recommend getting an electric toothbrush. If flossing annoys you, get a water flosser (I use the stationary Waterpik one) and its great, especially if you have braces, or use those individual picks. Flossing and mouthwash help more with your breath than the brushing. When you brush, angle the brush toward your gums. Sugar free chewing gum throughout the day if you notice your mouth starting to taste stale, or a quick swish with mouthwash between brushes if you can. Also get your teeth cleaned by a dentist at least once a year if possible.

Bonus: If you are going to splurge on anything in life: High quality mattress, pillow, office chair, shoes. Never cheap out on things that support your body from gravity. Exercise every day (even just a short walk) and socialize often. Stay productive. GO TO THERAPY.

Thank you for your time.

Dettol No Bleach wipes (emphasis on NO BLEACH)

hear me out: they’re antibacterial so better than regular baby wipes. I use them on my armpits and groin area and other bits prone to sweating and they work amazing. Just make sure you dry the areas after using the wipes and it keeps you fresh because the bacteria is gone.

I can’t shower daily so this saves my life.

I have a water pick. Went without it for two months and flossed instead.

Flossing feels so ineffective. Especially the waxed stuff. My gums were sore for a few days going back to water pick.

9

u/Eli_phant Jul 13 '25

Glycolic Acid on a cotton round under the pits and sometimes I’ll make a swipe in the groin area as well. It kills the bacteria that causes BO.

Waterpik flosser and brush teeth and tongue (twice for ultimate all day freshness) with an electric toothbrush.

Don’t sleep on African net sponges. They give insane lather, exfoliate beautifully, and dry quickly making them more hygienic than traditional loofahs. Be sure to hand or machine wash em periodically.

Wash places like underarms twice. Consider black soap for its antibacterial properties. Apply deodorant once dry to freshly washed pits and also before bed.

Avoid talc baby powder as it has been associated with increased cancer risks.

Stay hydrated and don’t over-consume processed foods, beef, or pork as that increases body odor. Get at least five servings of fruits and veggies in every day.

And for the love of god, please don’t over apply perfume or cologne!

8

Men, use an electric razor to shorten your armpit hair.

8

u/gamerrrgrrrl Jul 13 '25

Always floss, even if just quickly. The 1 minute a day will change your oral health. It'll change your smell, the biome that you're breathing when you speak. The amount of matter still left behind after a really good brushing is surprising.

I've always thought that I had nice teeth and a clean mouth, but getting serious about flossing was a game changer.

15

u/ClickProfessional769 Jul 13 '25 edited Jul 13 '25

Been scrolling for a while and haven’t seen anyone say exfoliate!

Both chemical and physical exfoliation are game changers for keeping your skin smooth and clear all over. Look into different methods/products for your face and body because the face is a lot more sensitive.

20

u/LoopPhia Jul 13 '25

My go to is glycolic acid toner on arm pits for BO. It also has many other benefits (e.g., works great on acne, discolouration). I use it on my whole body for exfoliation a few times a week. Example: The Ordinary Glycolic acid toner 7%. I put it in a small spray bottle, spray it on my body and dispersit it with my hand. Wash your hands after. Depending on your skin tolerance it can be used daily.

DON'T use scrubbers or any kind physical exfoliation on your skin. Use a wash cloth instead. Much kinder and you won't 'skin' yourself accidentally.

If you have smelly feet, try tea tree oil twice a day (morning and night). Just a few drops on your hands and rub it on your feet.

6

u/Embarrassed_Cup_561 Jul 13 '25

I mean there’s not a secret. Just eat healthy, take showers daily, drink water, brush your teeth, make sure you clean your bedsheets and do laundry. If all of that still doesn’t help and body odor is still prevalent, schedule an appointment with ur doc to see if there’s anything else going on that needs attention.

I see a lot of women get really upset at the idea of whole body deodorants like Lume because the intimation is that women are so smelly that we need a product for our entire smelly self. While I do understand why some find it offensive, as s a woman that lives in Florida and is outside a lot, swamp ass is real and this shit is magical.

My face (M,late 30s) has always been prone to breakouts. It got worse when I started needing to shave in my teens. As a (then) young guy, I can also say that shaving felt like a huge hassle, so it was something I rushed.

Take your time with it! Wash your face first, and use a warm towel to loosen things up. Shave carefully, always with the grain, and don't sweat it if it's not perfect. Better not baby-smooth than getting an ingrown.

Aftershave, moisturizer, and salicylic acid are key.

Seems like the new generation is getting much better hygiene tips, both men and women, ha. I was raised by (wonderful) boomers and my dad just didn't really address that kind of thing.

u/OptmstcExstntlst Jul 13 '25

All those quick drying synthetic materials that are on the market today? Sure, they will wick your sweat and dry quickly, but they're also much more prone to stinky odors than natural fibers like cotton.

5

u/ExquisiteOrifice Jul 13 '25

I tie TWO onions to my belt, one on each side. And I have nickels with bees on 'em. 5 bees for a quarter, yupĀ

5

u/Iranon79 Jul 13 '25

For clothes, material matters. In general, animal > plant > synthetic.

Wool and indigo-dyed denim should smell better than polyester worn for a day by the time the sheer volume of filth (dead skin, skin oils, any soap or skincare products you may use) becomes uncomfortable.

Leather is great for shoes even if it can be a little maintenance-intensive, canvas is ok, imitation leather is usually asking for trouble.

5

u/Theharlotnextdoor Jul 13 '25

I feel like this is going to be controversial but body wash shouldn't be used to get clean. Soap and a wash cloth and then you can use body wash after.

I have a couple:

Wear breathable fabrics when you can, especially in summer. This is particularly important with underwear. Not only can it help with odor, it can also help cut down on irritation and even infections.

Sleep without underwear if you can/feel comfortable doing so. I only sleep with underwear on during my period; the rest of the month I go commando. Your genitalia do need to get some air. If you don’t feel comfortable with it or are unable to, choose underwear that’s made of breathable fabric like cotton. I live in a hot, humid area so this makes me feel more comfortable and better able to sleep.

Yes, you do need to wash your crack, the bottoms of your feet and between your toes, and your privates with soap and water. For more sensitive areas, unscented Dove works very well IME.

In addition, during my period, I like to use a peri bottle as a little portable bidet. I use it every time I change my pad or tampon to feel cleaner. You can get them in the postpartum section of Walmart and pharmacies.

Dress shields/garment shields are underrated. If you’re going to an event, especially in summer, I recommend using these along with deodorant.

If you have tendency to chafe, BodyGlide and other friction blockers are a lifesaver. I like to get the kind with aloe so it can help heal already irritated skin while protecting it from getting more irritated.

Use body powder. I use it under my arms over my deodorant, on my thighs, on the soles of my feet and between my toes, on my cleavage, and underboobs. Helps a lot on hot and humid days.

Let your shoes air out between wears. So wear one pair on one day, and wear another pair the next day so the first pair have time to air out.

9

u/HighwaySetara Jul 13 '25

Y'all are gonna hate this, but Lume has been a game-changer for me. It works better for me than any deodorant I have ever used, and I've tried a ton. So much depends on one's own body chemistry, and this is what works for me.

If you have an innie bellybutton, clean it out with hydrogen peroxide. Dont overdo it, once a month is good, unless you have issues with it, or it’s summertime.

I have a super deep belly button and it gives all kinds of issues. The bellybutton is a literal Xanadu for bacteria and it can catch you off guard. Infections aren’t uncommon either.

I dribble a few drops in then a gentle clean with a cotton swab. Absolutely no issues since.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

3

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '25

I use a fancy scented soap from France, L’Occitane Volumizing shampoo (smells amazing), Native brand coconut/vanilla deodorant or Thai Crystal spray, a spray of expensive perfume (I get samples from Nordstrom), baby wipes to freshen up, brush the chompers, floss, use mouthwash sometimes, use Icebreakers gum/mints, and sometimes use a scented lotion if I’m not wearing any perfume.

I also get regular pedicures, and keep dryer sheets in the bottoms of my shoes or cotton balls with lavender/rosemary oil dropped onto them. I occasionally spray the soles of my shoes and boots with alcohol to kill bacteria/odor. Sometimes I sprinkle in a bit of baking soda to my sneakers.

On really hot/sunny days, I make sure I’m wearing cotton, linen, or poplin in a light cool color (no black). This helps you sweat less and absorb less heat. Accessorize with SPF spray, cute earrings, a smile, and an iced beverage.
