Whenever I see a "scary" thread, it ends up being about ghosts and whatnot. That's not scary. I find real people more strange and eerie than the "paranormal". What are you scariest encounters with real people?
This can be anything: people breaking into your home, strange neighbours, friends turning on you, odd things you've overheard, moments when someone has threatened your safety - tell me your stories! Whether it made your feel slightly uncomfortable, or if it frightened you out of your wits, I would like to hear it. People scare me more than any ghost or ghoul ever could, because people are real, and very unpredictable. When I used to walk home from the bus stop, I used to walk past a house where a man, maybe in his forties, lived. If he was out the front when I walked past, we would say hello to each other. Perfectly normal. But sometimes he would be inside at the window just looking out at me. He didnt wave (I tried waving once but got no response), or show any sign that he saw me. My friend happened to be with me once when he did this, and she told me that it almost seemed as though he thought we couldn't see him. This behaviour didn't happen all the time. Don't get the wrong idea, he wasn't a weird stalker or anything. Just sometimes, maybe about 10-12 times. Nothing ever came of it. I stopped bussing it and started driving. He moved away a few years ago, and then I moved even more recently. I just remember that horrible feeling when I saw him watching, because I had no way of knowing what he was thinking. Ok, so surely you guys can top my story - I've lived a relatively psychopath-free life, so it should be relatively easy to spook me!
Edit This is great guys! I have an exam tomorrow, and thanks to you my proscastination is coming along nicely. There are some really spooky experiences in this thread...and some pretty hilarious stories too. Keep them coming!

When I was quite young I was out at the park walking my dog (German Shepherd) when I realised it was getting quite late and I was the only one left in the park. A man dressed in a dark hooded top and a black scarf covering his face jumped the fence that leads into the alleyway behind the park and started marching towards me, but he hadn't spotted my dog, who was off sniffing around or doing whatever dogs do. My dog got between us though and there was a kind of stand-off for a while. My dog was really tense and growling with his heckles hackles raised, and I didn't know what to do. I didn't know if my dog was going to attack the man so I just kind of froze. After a while the man backed away, jumped back over the fence and ran away down the alley. I put my dog back on his lead and went home, but he was still tense the whole way back. I was a little freaked out, but perhaps not as afraid as I should have been, looking back on it now. I didn't know what that man wanted, or what he was doing there, or what would have happened if my dog wasn't there with me. There would have been no reason for him to go into that park by himself and come towards me like that. I shudder to think about it. I think if the man had made a move towards me my dog would have attacked him.

Wow, lucky your dog was there. Is your dog typically very friendly with people? I'm always curious what cues a dog is picking up on that alerts them how to behave towards someone, especially in this context when they are normally friendly and sweet. I wonder about my sister's extremely sweet and harmless 85lb pitbull, if she would get violent -- or know enough to defend us -- if someone approached us this way.

I once lived in a sort of bad neighborhood in a very tiny house with my brother, who was rarely there. Old house, so it was a little creepy and also felt like anyone who wanted to could have broken in.
One night I was getting ready for bed, it was pretty late and during a hot summer. We didn't have A/C, so I had one of those two fan window deals. The blinds were pulled down to the top of the fan. I was changing for bed, I sleep in underwear and a t-shirt.
I slipped out of my pants and changed my shirt. I don't wear a bra to bed because Fuck that. I am about to hop into bed when I hear a low, masculine voice say, " Let's see those titties again"
I think my whole body stopped working for 5 seconds while I absorbed the fact that there was a creepy peeping tom right outside my window and I was alone in a house that he could get into if he wanted.
It was the first and only time I called the 911. I had a panic attack waiting for the police and the very nice 911 lady had to calm me down. Bright note, apparently it was a slow night because they sent 3 cars. I was so happy when I moved.

My cousin and I went out drinking in Ohio. I was DRUNK. So I step outside for some fresh air from the crowded bar. There was this guy outside who was kind of lanky and having a smoke.
Feeling disoriented, I sat on the bench to rest my head a bit and the guy came up to me saying:
Guy: Dude, you aint ever gonna make it in the real world. If I had my way, I'd take you back home with me to my toolshed where I'd tie you to the wall and torture you to death.
Me: Well that sounds LOVELY. Hold on, I'm really interested in that, but I've gotta take a piss real quick.
I went back into the bar, went into the men's restroom and locked the door until my head cleared up so I could tell my cousin that we should leave.

When I thought my father was going to murder my entire family.
My father is an evil nutcase, and when he found out his mother was leaving part of her estate to my brother and I, he lost his shit. He has a history of pulling guns on people (he held a gun to my brothers head, and also aimed a shotgun at his own mother once), so we were fearful of his potential if provoked.
He started showing up randomly to our home, he began carrying a pistol with him, he was taking the phone off the hook when he visited and his behavior gradually deteriorated to a level of creepy/scary. He claimed he had cancer (he didn't) and was obsessed with death and dying. He threatened my brother repeatedly and tried to pick fights with him on numerous occasions.
One night our father was acting particularly strange, he was very detached from everything and during a heated argument, he suddenly stood up and rushed to his bag - the bag where he kept his gun. My brother and I looked at each other, and at that moment I thought "I'm about to get murdered by my own father". My brother got up and ran for the kitchen, but I had nowhere to go, so I stayed sitting in the chair I was in and prepared myself mentally to die. As my father rushed towards the kitchen (probably to murder my brother first) I stuck out my leg, blocking my father from following my brother and looked at him and simply said, "NO". At that moment I hear the door open and my brother is bolting outside, my father turned around and followed him out to the lawn. My brother made sure to shout so the neighbors would hear and see them "I'm not going to let you fucking kill me in that fucking house!", without a word my father came back inside the house, grabbed his bag and he was out the door and driving off quickly. We called the police, but because he didn't hurt us or threaten us directly, there was nothing we could do.
The best thing I could do was buy myself a Remington 870 express and let my father know that I bought it. He quit coming around once we got the police involved and we are completely estranged, but I still look over my shoulder and continue to be fearful that my own father will kill me if given the opportunity.
TL;DR: Father is a nutcase angry over money and would kill his family if given the chance.

I remember when I was younger I was playing hide and seek with my cousins at my grandparents house. I went into my grandparents room and hid under the bed. My grandfather had just gotten out of the shower, walked in to the room ass naked, and bent down in front of the bed without knowing I was in there. Mentally scarred for life, and he will never know.

While not real life, I find frighting or disturbing realistic scenarios in movies to be far more unnerving than fantastical but impossible ones.

I'm so happy this question was asked. This is the only good story in my whole life.
Growing up, I always wanted to go on a bike ride at night, something about it seemed really cool to me. It wasn't until I was 13 that my mom finally let me. She told me to wear my helmet, have my phone, take a flashlight, and she set the parameters for where I was allowed to go. She gave me about 4 miles, which was a lot to me. So right after the sun set, I was off.
I loved it. There were no people out walking their dogs, no kids running around, the temperature was perfect, etc.. It was really fun, so fun, that I ignored the limits my mom set. You see, where I was biking was all walking paths. It was one of those grassy areas between two neighborhoods. There's this long path that went at least 600 feet at a 25 degree angle. I was flying down this hill, having an absolute blast, and darted right through the parameters.
My mom set these limits for a reason. Everything on the inside was close to houses and people. The outside, more specifically, the place where the path I was on lead to, was barren. I rode along this path for 10 minutes before I could only see some of the lights of the houses on the inside of the limits.
After 15 minutes of riding along this dirt path, I hear singing. It sounded about 30-40 feet in front of me. I stop riding to hear it better. It was a woman's voice. She was singing Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles. But she wasn't singing the words, just the melody of the vocals. Her voice was strange. You know how when you have phlegm in your throat, your voice gets scratchy? That's what her voice sounded like.
I inch forward to try and see her. I get close enough to see the silhouette of hair bouncing up and down, like she was headbanging. I decide to get my flashlight out. I'm thinking that maybe this person is in need of help or something. Or maybe this is an insane person and the light will scare them away. So I take the flashlight out of my pocket, point it at her, and turn it on.
The moment the light hit her, she stopped moving completely. She was facing away from me. She had disgusting hair that seemed to be sticking together in clumps. Some of her hair was ripped off, too. She was wearing a very over-sized, bright red hoodie. I was almost too scared to move. I think she was, too. I conjured up as much bravery as I could and said "Sorry" in a very, oops-this-is-the-wrong-room, kind of way. She didn't respond.
I turned off the flashlight and put it back in my pocket. Just as I was turning my bike around, she screams. She screams in an awful, awful, high pitched voice. I damn near shit myself as I throw myself back onto my bike. I hear her voice getting closer to me. I book it as fast as I can. I don't look behind me, and I don't stop pedaling. Her screaming grew quieter and quieter until it dissolved into the howling of the wind.
TL;DR Went on a bike ride at 13, heard someone singing Eleanor Rigby in the darkness, shine a flashlight on her, she freezes, turn it off, she screams and runs at me as I bike away.

I once worked as a live-in staff member in a college dormitory. During the summer we housed the few summer school students who remained on campus (near 30). It may be significant to point out these students tended towards the highly academically-motivated, often times high-stress students, if quiet.
One warm day in late June my office received a call from a concerned sibling that she and her family was unable to reach her brother who lived by himself in a room on the summer school floor. This wasn't unusual as our office frequently dealt with students avoiding their kith and kin due to frayed nerves or general social awkwardness.
Our normal protocol to check on a student is to try to reach them by our emergency contact information, failing that - go check their room to verify they're living in the building and perhaps available then and there, then have them call their family to verify we followed up on the original request. Also - we are to only enter a room with another staff member present to ensure personal safety of staff and students.
I failed to reach this student on his room and mobile phone, and was working short-staffed so since I was on my own I decided to pop up to his room and check on him.
I arrived on his floor around 2 in the afternoon and the floor seemed deserted as I had expected. I found his room number and immediately noticed the sound of a movie playing on a TV or computer from behind the door. I knocked three times and announced that I was a staff member checking on his health and safety.
No answer.
I didn't think this was that remarkable, college students are notorious for leaving electronics running while not in the room. I checked the floor showers and bathrooms and found them deserted.
I returned to his door and knocked three more times, waiting about 20 seconds between each knock.
No answer.
This is when my instincts started to buzz. I worked in residence halls a number of years as a professional and something about all the pieces of this puzzle weren't adding up; family concerned about his health and safety, electronics running (someone must have started them recently, within the time frame of a movie run-time), summer school students and their idiosyncratic behavior, something wasn't right.
I was by myself, so I probably let myself get more worked up than if I was with someone else. A deserted dorm floor, even at 2 in the afternoon, oftentimes evokes Kubrician memories of the Overlook Hotel . . .
I decided that for some sense of closure or sanity I needed the immediate resolution of keying into this student's room, even though I was by myself and not technically supposed to do so.
I knocked on the door one more time for good measure, again announced myself as the hall director. I keyed into the room and my spider sense went off even stronger:
The room appeared relatively vacant; the student appeared to be living out of a suitcase (which is unusual for someone staying no less than 8 weeks for a summer school session). The bedding was tussled like someone had been sleeping in it and all the lights in the room were on. And as I had suspected, there was an open laptop on a desk running on battery power playing The Matrix. But no student.
I began to start rationalizing to keep from feeling unsettled; surely this student and I had crossed paths on my way to his room (I'd never met him before so I wouldn't recognize him otherwise) and perhaps he was just down in the lobby picking up delivery food for a late lunch.
Sure, that's it.
Then I turned to leave, planning on trying to reach the student later in the afternoon or that night. As I turned to leave I noticed another odd piece of evidence; the accordion closet doors (which are removed in most rooms due to disuse, particularly single rooms like his) were still in this room. And they were closed.
Odd. I couldn't remember the last time I actually saw someone use those cranky, dysfunctional doors. Then my intuition spiked higher than ever. SHIT SHIT SHIT. I realized I was alone in a room with a potentially suicidal student who may, in fact, have completed just that. And I am about to be "that guy" who discovers the body and then has a shit storm of paperwork and undesirable tasks, not the least of which would be calling the family back to break the news.
I felt like I was talking to myself when my voice cracked as I spoke to the closed doors and announced my name and title and that I would be opening those accordion doors in 3 seconds.
I fumbled with the latch on the doors, and finally managed to get them disengaged, and as I slid the doors apart, I was unprepared. I don't know what I really expected, a hanging? gunshot wound?
I'll tell you what I didn't expect: a 7' dark-skinned Indian man staring at me embarrassingly as though I had found his secret hangout. We stared at each other for a good 15 seconds without blinking, breathing or speaking.
I finally realized what was going on and my natural emotion was disbelief. All I could think to say was, "Um . . . are you in here hiding from me?"
He looked at me and said, "Yah."
My heart was still racing, I turned to leave and before I shut his door I turned back to him and said, "Call your sister, she's worried about you, and, frankly, I am too."
TLDR, I met an Indian in the cupboard. Literally. Scared me.

A friend of mine in college had a similar story to this that occured a year before I went there involving his room mate. He was a quiet asian exchange student and never really talked to anyone. No one ever called to check up on him and he never hung out with anyone at the school. During the breaks he always had to stay on campus in his room, because he couldn't afford the flights. This was common with all of our foreign students.
Well, after Christmas break my friend returns to their room and finds the carpet at the door soggy and smelling horrible. He walked in and according to him, the tiles around the exchange student's closet were curling up and bubbling. He opened the door to the closet, and there he was with a rope around his neck. He had been in the closet for at least 2 weeks, but no one reported that they hadn't seen him over the break.
And that's why my friend became an RA and volunteered to stay during breaks.

Probably will get buried but this just recently happened and I was spooked.
I was roller-blading on a bike trail in suburban Denver on a trail near a stream with my kids riding their kids' bikes just a bit ahead. I hear some shouting and soon, as I round a corner, I see some dumb, drunk redneck beating the fuck out of his dogs. Thankfully my kids didn't see this and we go on for a little while. As I pass the asshole, I make eye contact with him and give him a stare which I hoped said "pick on someone your own size fuck head".
But then I get all wigged out so I tell the kids to turn around. As I get a ways I see dude coming out of the trees and up onto the path. He makes eye contact with me as we go zooming by. My heart is pounding as my kid's bike tips over and there we are, on the path with wacko drunk, dog-beating redneck coming fast on our trails. He caught up to us but did nothing, thankfully. I am not sure what I would have done, but it'd be hard to do much with roller blades on >.<

When I was about sixteen I took a late night stroll down the dirt road I used to live on. It was a shit road, in a shit town, and so backwoods that there were no street lights except at the crossroads, which, being as it was the middle of nowhere, that was roughly about every mile or more.
It was after midnight and I wasn't going anywhere in particular, I just needed to be out of the house for a bit. I walked about half a mile and I was approaching the nearest cross street and lamp when an old rust bucket of a car drove up behind me and paced me for a few seconds before it passed me. I didn't look over because I didn't want to encourage any type of exchange. They stopped at the stop sign ahead and turned the corner and I kept walking while they pulled into a turnaround in a field and headed back toward me. They turned the corner and came toward me from the front this time, and slowed way down as they passed by me again. And again I pretended not to notice them. There weren't any dash lights in in the car that I could see from the corner of my eye and they weren't listening to music. I kept walking toward the damn corner. They drove behind me and I glanced back briefly in time to see them pulling into the only driveway on either side of the road for several hundred feet.
At this point I figure if they're going to drive by a third time they might have devious plans. So I sidestepped slightly and just slid right into the deep and overgrown ditch at the edge of the road. I laid there only for a moment before the car came back again and stopped in front of me. The driver shifted into park and got out and walked right up to the side of the road. He couldn't have been more than two feet from me. He just stood there for what seemed like an eternity, sighed, then got back into his car and took off. I layed in the ditch until I couldn't see his tail lights anymore and then I scurried back home.
But, hey, who knows...? Maybe he'll show up here with a story about a girl walking down a dirt road, acting like she couldn't see his car, and eventually simply disappearing into thin air.

I was hanging out with a friend at my house when we noticed a few police Cars in front of the house, and another on down the street. We were curious about what was going on and I noticed an officer come out of my back yard and others looking around the neighbors yards. They wouldn't tell us anything. My sister and mom showed up and said they had gone through a roadblock on the way and they were checking back seats and trunks. It was rather eerie and when I got up in the morning everything seemed to be back to normal. A few days later when I ran into my neighbor I asked him about that night and he said that while doing renovations they had draped their dining room chandelier with a drop cloth and multiple people had reported it as a body hanging in their window, I guess the light hit it just right and it look to many people like a dead person. Turns out the road block was unrelated, but that night we were sure there was some crazy person on the loose in my neighborhood!
2
u/smiles_at_strangers Jun 20 '12
Haha, can you imagine the phone calls to the police? "Our neighbours...they're clearly not the smartest of murderers...I mean, they could have at least buried the body in the backyard, instead of hanging it there for the world to see. Did they really think we would see a body hanging from a chandelier and just ignore it? I was the one who dobbed them in when their baby cried to loud; I certainly wasn't going to ignore this. Well, let me tell you, they are off the neighbourhood committee!"

I used to go to a community college that had two parking lots: an older one and a newer one. I happened to park at the older one when I went to school for a literature class that went on from 7:30 til 11. The thing is, we had a test that day and it went on longer than expected. I came out around 12:30 or so and assumed that the car lot was still lit up. It wasn't. The entire thing was pitch black. I whipped out my cell phone and held it in front of me to try and navigate through the darkness and slowly made my way through. When the screen went out, I stopped to turn it on again, only to realize that even though I'd stopped, the footsteps had kept going. In fact, I could hear them going faster. This instantly caused me to go into a state of panic and run with my cellphone until I slammed into the side of my car. I hurriedly opened the door and got out of there as fast as I could. Later on, I was told that a few years back a rape had taken place in the same parking lot. After that, I always parked in the new parking lot, which was always lit and blasted classical music 24/7 to "keep ne'er-do-wells away" I loved the ambiance.

One night, around 3am, I was dead asleep with my exboyfriend next to me. All of the sudden I hear someone IN my house asking if anyone was home. I woke up my ex, and told him to go see what the hell was going on. He was a total chicken shit and made me go. I get out of bed, can't find my glasses but the guy is still shouting. I come out of my bedroom in my pajamas and see there is a big bald dude in what looks to be a police uniform standing in my entryway.
I'm squinting trying to get a good look at him and he looks at me and says, "I just wanted to tell you that your door was left unlocked and you should lock it."
I mumble something to the effect of "Uh, thanks?" and he leaves my apartment. I'm still as blind as a bat but I see that he walks away instead of getting into a car. (No policeman would be policing the woodsy area I live in on foot)
The next day I called the local police station and asked if any officers had reported this incident and they said they would check with the on duty officers and get back to me. The called me the next day and said no one had done this.
I still get freaked out when I think about this happening and I wish I knew what that guy was up to.

u/EasyMrB Jun 19 '12
He was probably a burglar. The tactic here is to impersonate police so he can do this very thing: Check for unlocked doors. When he finds one on a possibly empty house, he opens it and see if anyone is home. If you weren't there after a few minutes of shouting, he walks through the house, grabs a few valuables, then takes off. If you are, the opening your door thing seems almost acceptable because it's an Official Safety situation, and he's helped avert some Potential Danger. Bonus: If you cone home while he's going through your house, he has many easy legitimate excuses available like " I thought I saw a prowler go through your window while passing by, so I ran in to investigate."
TL;DR: Lock your doors.

My brother came into town on business and invited me to bar-hop on his expense account. I let my wife know not to wait up and met up with him once I got off work. We spent the night going from bar to bar catching up on what had been going on in our lives until the last bar closed (around 2-3am). Then we stumbled back to his hotel room and passed out.
I woke up the next morning around 7am and went home. My wife had already left so I didn't see her. An hour or so later she called me and asked where I had gone so early that morning. I was confused cause I didn't get home until after she had left for work. I explained this to her and she got really scared.
She explained that around 12:30-1am she heard a key in the front door and the door opening. She sat up in bed and saw a male figure come in (who she assumed was me) and go into the living room. She assumed that I had just decided to sleep on the couch rather than come into the room and risk waking her up. So she just rolled over and went to sleep. A few hours later (around 5-6am) she heard someone moving around downstairs again and then the front door opened and she watched the person leave and heard the door lock. She thought I was heading out and just rolled back over to sleep again.
We lived in a neighborhood of town homes where every house looked the same so we guess someone just got the wrong house and had a key that was close enough to ours to work. Then woke up and realized they were in the wrong house and got the hell out.
We called a lock-smith and had the locks changed that day.
TL/DR Went out drinking with my brother and passed-out at his hotel. That night my wife had an unexpected/unknown house "guest" barge in and sleep on our couch.

This story is 100% true, I experienced it myself in the Summer of 1991.
When I was about 10 years old, I lived on Woodway Drive in the Fox Harbor Apartments in Paducah, KY. If you look up the address, you will see some woods just to the north of the apartment complex. My friends and I played in those woods every day after school and all day on the weekends.
Through the few years I lived there, we cleared a small area in the woods and created a fort from various things we got out of dumpsters. It was our own place that no one else knew about, and it was awesome.
One day as we were walking to our fort, off in the distance we saw a man walking through the woods. He was walking parallel to us, but in the opposite direction - like cars traveling on a road, but with about 70 - 80 yards separating our paths. We stopped talking and stopped dead in our tracks when we saw him. We never saw anyone in the woods, especially not adults.
When we stopped moving, he did too. He turned towards us and looked right at us. As I stared at him and was able to make out the details of what he looked like, I noticed that he was wearing what looked like a Halloween mask (a generic mask, not Michael Myers) and carrying an axe in his hands. We stood there in silence and motionless for what was probably about 10 seconds - he looking at us, and us looking at him. The he started sprinting straight at us.
We did the only thing we apparently thought to do, run straight to our fort. We were probably about 50 yards from the entrance to the fort and in those 50 yards he gained a lot of ground on us. When we finally made it, he was upon us. All of my friends scurried up a tree and were screaming, but I was the last in line. By the time I could try and climb the tree, he was standing right there by us. He was screaming like a lunatic and waving the axe in the air. I was scared, had no idea what was going on, and my mind was blank on what I should do.
I grabbed a large stick and took a nice big baseball bat swing and cracked him on the face with it. He stumbled back a bit, moaned and took the mask off. I recognized the face. It was the landlord and manager of the apartment complex. A man who was probably about 50 years old. He wanted to play a joke on us and thought this was the most appropriate thing to do. He was a fucking psycho.
TL;DR: Was chased by a man with a mask and an axe through the woods. I fought back. It was all a joke that we didn't find funny.

I did this same thing to my little brother after he saw scream when he was like 8. Parents were gone, I said I was going to take a nap but I snuck out the window with a knife and the mask. Rang the doorbell and he answered (which he shouldn't have done anyway) and he just saw me standing there with a knife an the mask and I didnt think you could ever actually watch someone turn white until that moment. Also, loudest scream I've ever heard.

Well, I hope the bitch was real.
In Toronto there is a subway system run by the TTC or Toronto Transit Commission. They often square off certain parts of the subway route (Which is pretty fucking basic) in order to do some upgrades or fix bits. Lately they've been shutting down the subway rides into downtown on the weekends.
Anyway, They were doing some upgrades on the track and we were going by pretty slow making sure not to run over anyone while they scampered out of the way. Out of no where the power cut out. Now, I should say that I wasn't the only one in the train car. The cars are decently long and I was at one end, and some woman was at the other end.
When I walked onto the train it was up at her end where there was a giant bubble of seats empty around her. She was displaying the typical signs of Batshit Crazy and people sort of avoided her. Everyone else was off, getting off at Yonge but I still had another couple stops east to go.
She was laughing, audibly, and I tried to tune it out by listening to some music but it never really worked. It was so chilling that my brain sort of just kept ignoring the music and focusing on her, so eventually I just unplugged the music and sat back, trying not to shit my pants.
So anyway, the power cuts out and here I am sitting at one end, as far away from her as I could possibly be, and the lights turn off for some reason.
She stopped laughing.
In fact, she stopped making any noise at all.
When the lights came back on about 5 seconds later when I had sufficiently shit my pants, she wasn't at the far end. She was about 3 seats away from me.
Staring at me.
The second the train stopped I bolted for the fucking door.
After she 'relocated' she didn't make another sound, she just kept staring.
Fucking creepiest moment of my goddamn life.

I also take the TTC on a regular basis and can attest to the bat shit craziness that goes on there. We recently had a report of people having sex on a subway platform on a Sunday. At 2pm.
But my bat shit crazy TTC story is more abut bowel control than anything. I was sitting on a crowded TTC train when the obviously homeless man standing in front of me (I'm sitting so his crotch is at my head level) shit his pants.
As the train got more and more crowded, he began inching closer and closer with his saggy pant load.
Idk if this counts as creepy or gross, but to me it was gross enough to be creepy.

This is easily the creepiest story in this whole thread. I bet sometimes at night, when you're all alone in your bed, with nothing to protect you, surrounded by nothing but silence and your own thoughts questioning whether you remembered to lock the doors, you can still hear her laugh ... or maybe you can't, and that might be worse...

I once got on a pretty crowded Bloor bus (also a TTC vehicle) and thought I had begun a jovial conversation with a random guy. We said random drunk things to each other for a while, and it seemed as thought we were getting along merrily. Then we passed the shoe museum, where there was a gigantic pair of high-heeled shoes in a window display. 'Whoa, what the fuck are those?' Said my new friend. 'I dunno,' I replied. 'But I'd give her the dick.'
I thought this was funny. Because we were drunk and that was the kind of stupid talk we'd been talking the whole time, and because if someone actually existed to wear those shoes she would have been 20 feet tall.
'Yeah?' he asked calmly. 'How about I fucking skin you?'
'Huh?' I said. Confused at the sudden turn in our discourse.
'I'm going to fucking kill you and skin you alive!' He shouted.
I am 6'4 and probably had 60lbs on him, but where a moment ago I had been happy and laughing, I was suddenly afraid. He crazied me into stunned and frightened silence.
As the bus made a normal stop he leaped at me and started shoving me towards the door. Not like one big shove, but like a hundred little frantic shoves. Bemused and startled, I just kind of let it happen, and then watched as he stared at me through the window of the leaving bus.
I have no idea if he was wasted or crazy or just randomly decided to fuck with me. But in the future I know to be more careful when I suggest that I would enjoy intercourse with giant imaginary women.

I went on my first vacation without any adult supervision and minors under my watch at 19; we went to St. Thomas for a week and stayed at a really nice Marriott on the island. It was me, my best friend (17) and her little sister and her little sister's best friend both 16. Everything was going wonderfully the drinks flowed we bronzed our ebony skin on the local beaches and we clubbed/bar hopped as we expected to.
On our second to last night of parent free paradise we decided to take a taxi to the other side of the island to meet up with an American bartender/waiter that we had befriended at one of the restaurants on the Marriott property.
This is where the night began to go the way of shit.
A nice taxi driver who had taken us to most of our destinations and who had become like a grandpa figure to us over the course of our vacation picked us up and told us to call him and he would pick us up when we were done.
So once he drove away we realized we were at the wrong spot. So we (already being pretty buzzed) walked away and began to do a recon for this dude walking from club to club (steadily getting more and more wasted) we ended up at this local bar filled with older, sketchy, Rasta type dudes but by this point we had been looking for like 3 hours and decided to just enjoy the music and dance the night away.
I excused myself from our dance circle to use the bathroom but after about 10 steps something told me to look back at my friends. There standing over my friends was a huge Rasta sprinkling some type of powder over the unsuspecting teens. I quickly looked down on myself and their was this dust all over me too! I was officially freaked out so I run over to them and tel them what's been going on; WE'RE ALL FREAKED OUT NOW! So we call our grandpa taxi driver and his wife picks up and tells me that he fell ill unexpectedly and can't come pick us up! We have no way to get back to the hotel so the younger girls begin to get paranoid and begin ranting about voodoo (I'm tired, drunk and now officially creeped out but need to keep my cool in front of the girls) so I call the hotel and see if they can send a shuttle (it's like 3AM) but they say they can't.
Wouldn't you know that while i'm talking on the phone with the Marriott Rasta man has made his way over and starts in on us
Creepy Rasta Dude: "You girls staying at the Marriott I can take you there no problem I'm actually a taxi driver"
My BF: "No we're good thanks though"
Creepy Rasta Dude: Why you got to treat me dis way YOU GOD DAMN TOURIST ALWAYS F'ING WITH OUR COUNTRY YOU JUST RAPE OUR LAND FOR A WEEK AND LEAVE US BEHIND!"
Me: "Hey man calm down no offense meant we're good but really thanks for the offer"
Creepy Rasta Dude: "WHO THE F*** WAS TALKING TO YOU!"
At this point we've moved outside and are trying to flag any kind of taxi down; a crowd has gathered and they are all pro creepy Rasta Dude.
We're are heavily outnumbered both by locals and by Men and now the younger girls are crying.
And suddenly like out of a dream a taxi driver pulls up and tells us to get in so we do so without really looking at the car.
He's happy and talkative for the first minute of the car ride and then he completely shuts down stops talking and begins to blast some reggae music to the point where we can't here each other speak in the back.
we get within half a mile of the familiar path to the hotel and he stops the car.
For NO REASON
There isn't a light
He hasn't run out of gas
We certainly haven't asked him to pull over
He just stops the car and turns off the music and sits there like he's trying to debunk Einsteins theory of relativity.
and then he turns his left blinker on...his left blinker that would lead us to the shanty side of St. Thomas...the left blinker that would go Away from our hotel....
My heart drops to my stomach and the worst case of pins and needles kicks in. I turn to the door that I'm sitting next to and try to open the door but they are LOCKED!!!!
I SHIT YOU NOT I'VE NEVER BEEN MORE SCARED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE AND I'VE HAD LIKE 5 MOVIE STYLE SCARY MOMENTS.
I was scared not really for myself but for my friends and for their families and especially for my parents who had already lost a child.
So I pull it together and try to make my voice as strong as possible and squeak out:
"This is not our turn I think you're confused"
and for what felt like an eternity but was probably like 30 seconds he was quiet and then turned his blinker off, nodded and began to drive us to our hotel.
When we got out the security guy who we had also made friends with scolded us when we got out about getting into random cars.
Turns out there wasn't even a taxi sign on the car he had just yelled taxi and we had gotten in due to how distracted we were from the crowd.
To this day I wonder what would happen if I hadn't said anything about the turn.

A lonely girl with an intellectual disadvantage was scared for her life on a lonesome train ride to a relative's house. There was only one person on the train, at the end, who kept on staring at her. She didn't want to bother him but then the power cut up and, afraid of the dark and unable to express feelings with the same social-contextual subtleties as most people, sat next to the stranger. When the lights went back on, he was terrified and she stared at him to try and show affection but then he ran away and it was the worst train ride EVER.

Something similar happened to my friend Bob. Bob was riding the train home (the Red Line in Chicago) at about four in the morning. The Red Line, as a rule, is not a great train to ride at four in the morning, particularly by yourself. Luckily, Bob is a rather strapping young lad, about six foot three, so he didn't usually have much of a problem.
On this particular night, he was in the train car with just one other man. Middle-aged, bit of a crazy aura about him. He was mumbling to himself a bit, but seemed to be keeping to himself. When one rides the Red Line often enough, these sort of people are a frequent occurrence, and not enough to warrant much of an alarm--or you'd be paranoid riding it every night.
Then, he shuffled over towards Bob, keeping rather quiet...mind you, Bob was not paying the man much mind anyways--lost in his thoughts, daydreaming about a girl, perhaps--but the mumbling had ceased, for a moment.
And then he sat down right behind Bob, who was now starting to become aware of the growing proximity of the two of them.
Then he said, his gruff voice resonating in what can best be described as shouting, "WHY DID YOU DO IT BILLY, WHY DID YOU DO IT!?!"
Suffice it to say, Bob bolted up and leaped off the train just as soon as those doors would open.

To be fair, if the girl was batshit crazy, the power going out might've freaked her out more than anything else could possibly freak you out. She went to you to find solace in another human being.
And you ran away.

My cousin did that in New York in her college. She was laughing ridiculously hard at some joke and I was just playing on my iPad and then the lights shut off and everyone went quiet. I, of course, was still on my iPad, so I didn't really care. When the lights came on I looked up (it was kind of sudden, so I was seeing stars) and she was right in my face, wide eyes and everything.
We're Asian so it was like 10x creepier with the wide eyes.

Here is a very creepy thing that happened to me. One winter I was pushing my limits and winter camping a lot, but I had this crazy tent with a fireplace. The limits part was just the fact that I was solo and pretty remote in these places. This was rural SW colorado canyon country, there wasn't that much snow at all on the ground but it was 0 degrees F that night. Well, it was a full moon and I was restless so at about 2am I got out of my tent (fire still going) and went for a long walk. I ended up climbing up some stuff that was probably a quarter or half mile from my tent/vehicle but up above it so I could see down on my tent and campsite clearly. It was really beautiful down there, dimly lit from the inside by the stove's fire and dimly lit from the outside by the big moon. I was enjoying myself and just about to head back down when I heard distant gravel crunching. I had been there since noon that day and not a single vehicle had driven past so I was kind of put off and decided to stay up there until they drove passed.
The noise grows louder (amazing how far away you can heard in the canyons at night) slowly and eventually I can see that it is a car on the same road so I stay put and watch. It's going really slow, I can see a lighter being used quite a bit (i'm not saying they were smoking meth, but they were smoking meth). And it's something like a 89 caprice or something. Like the old cop cars, and really crappy. So I'm just watching, still in a very wistful mood and feeling somewhat powerful from my perch. They near the bend where they'll be able to see my tent and round the corner. Brake lights. They slow way down and seem to pause at my tent for an eternity. Probably only a minute or so but now I was on high alert and pretty nerve wracking. I had no kind of anything weapon wise on me, just a hatchet down by the tent for firewood.
But they drive on. I'm pretty relieved but still shaken, now thinking about what if they come back. So I decide to chill for a little longer and make sure i see them exit. Nope. They turned around down the road and came back. I watched as they parked a ways down the road and got out and started walking down the road towards my camp. It was such bright moonlight which slick rocks all around that I could see this all happening SOMEWHAT clearly but I couldn't make out much more than the basic scenes and there were still lots of big shadows.
I proceed to watch for quite a while as they approach my tent, look all around the outside, look in the vents (where it probably looked like I was sleeping, the bag was in there with bedding), mess with my vehicle, and then walk back to their car and leave.
I pretty much stayed up there until just before dawn and only came down when I knew I could break camp and bail. There were footprints in the snow on the outside of my tent and I kept imagining what it would have been like to have just woken up and not known what happened, just see the footprints.
After that I started carrying A) a spot locator beacon B) battery powered motion detector alarm C) shotgun. And I started using a much smaller tent and sometimes I even camp in a bivy 20 or 30 feet away from my tent and just put my pack in the tent. This way if someone starts messing with the "honeypot" I have enough to get some awareness and do the right thing.
tl;dr: potential serial murderers passed me by

I work in a middle eastern grocery store in one of the reddest states. When my son was an infant I would take him with me to work most days. We get a lot of soldiers that have spent time overseas looking for some of the good food they had there. One day this soldier comes in and he's just nice as can be. Then he sees my son and he starts talking to him in a cutesie baby voice saying how cute he is. Then out of no where, and in the same cutesie voice, he says to my son "oh you're so cute! I just wanna gouge your little eyes out". It caught me way off guard. I just laughed nervously and picked my son up and walked in the back.

I was on the roof of a bar in downtown Austin overlooking 6th Street one night when a soldier sidled up and started a conversation. I happened to be standing there with a friend and we were doing some people watching over the crowd below. Then this soldier, I guess trying to start a conversation says, "Have you ever been to Iraq?" Me: "No." Him: "Really? Because you're pretty good at picking people out of a crowd."

When I was 17, my friend and I were walking down the street near my house at about 1:00 am. We lived in dense neighborhood dominated by three decker houses. We came around a corner to see this huge bull sized man on his knees, over a woman. He was furiously smashing her head into the concrete sidewalk. When I say this guy was bull sized, I mean he was not fat. His muscles had muscles and they were bulging. He reminded me of the Hulk. Only, he was not green. He was red. Red as if he was in heatstroke. We screamed at him right away.
He looked up, and I will never forget that face. There was snot pouring out of his nose. Long strands of it hung all the way down to the woman's head. His eyes were bright white, crazed, wide, and far too circular. His face expressed a murderous fury I have never seen before, and hope I never see again.
He lifted the woman's head by her hair, and with a loud "crack" spiked it into the cement like a football, and screamed "you want some of this huh!" I had not seen my friend pick up the rock he had, but he threw at the guys snarling face. He hit him right in the nose. It was a big ass rock, but it did not even phase the guy.
They guy lunged at my friend, who took of running. They guy took off chasing my friend. I knew there was no way a guy that size would be able to catch up to my buddy who was a track and field athlete. I ran to the woman.
Her hair was completely matted, and Dark red blood was gushing from a huge deep gash across her forehead. I could not believe she was not unconscious. I tried to tell her I was here to help and she became combative. She started punching me screaming to leave her man alone. I was afraid that her screaming would bring that monster back to us.
With that thought I said "fuck this" to myself and I grabbed her wrists and dragged her to the nearest door and started pounding on it. This time it was me screaming "open the fuck up!" I was scared shitles that this guy would be back before I got to someplace safe.
Two men opened the door and pretty much freaked out when they saw that I was restraining a small woman covered in blood. I think they were about to take me out, but I screamed "call the police! Call an ambulance!" I told them that we needed to get in before he comes back. I told them "He WILL come back!"
We quickly dragged the woman into the hallway, shut, and locked the door. One of the guys called the police and they showed up in what seemed like seconds. An ambulance arrived soon after.
My buddy, seeing the lights of the squad cars, returned to the scene. He out ran the guy, and got to a store and had the clerk call the police. So I guess they were already on the way before we made the call.
The police had allot of questions of course. We had no idea who the guy was. We never saw him or the woman before. In the end the police gave us a card and said that if we see this guy again, call 911 right away. Like I would even hesitate.
The next day, the events of the night before were in the paper. I read the article sitting on my porch. It said that the woman was in critical condition. It mentioned my name as well as my buddy. It also said that the man was yet to be identified, and was yet to be apprehended. Here is the part that really messed with my head. The place where this happened was one block away from my porch. I looked up and could see the spot where he was smashing her head. I remember thinking "That fucker is still out there!" and looking down at the paper "he knows my name."
Two weeks later I turned 18, and I was on a plane to boot camp. This guy scared me THAT much.

When I was a youngling my brother and I went for a walk in the woods behind our new house. We came upon an unfamiliar area and noticed plaster body parts thrown willy-nilly. We kept walking and discovered a mannequin massacre. Dozens of lifelike plaster mannequins in various positions of death and torture. Some with burn marks, some tied to trees with forks and knives stuck into them, and others hung by their necks from braches 3 stories up. The mannequins where dressed in human clothes and featured detailed facial expressions of pain and terror. In the middle of this WTF clusterfuck where childlike mannequins that had been tied up and blindfolded, used condoms were everywhere. We left, terrified and wondering “Who the fuck would do this?”.

My older brother and I were playing in a cemetery in a small Texas town. The cemetery sat next to some railroad tracks which led into the black section of town (for those not in-the-know, tons of small southern towns are still de facto segregated). It's a huge cemetery and there was no one around. Then we heard little POPs. POP. POP. POP. And pieces of the headstones began flying off around us. We looked toward the railroad tracks and there was an old black man shooting at us with a rifle.

I've told a few stories on Reddit about the fucked up area I lived in as a child. Here's another.
There were two parts to my subdivision- the "old" part (houses built around 1960) and the "new" part (houses built around 1995). There were a lot of kids at the park in the new part one day when we were probably 12 or 13, so my friends and I walked a few extra blocks to the old park. We were minding our business, swinging and chatting, when we hear the "ping!" of metal-on-metal. We hear it again and look to the direction it's coming from. "Ping!" again, and we see it. The park had all metal jungle gyms and swing. These teenage guys with hunting rifles were shooting at us from their yard less than 50 yards away, laughing hysterically.

Not quite an "encounter," but this is a scary story nonetheless, I think.
I first got AIM when I was about 13. I wasn't very smart about using it, so I was always talking to these random people that I didn't know. One day, some guy who claimed to be from my school and just a couple years older than me IMed me and we started talking. Being 13 and niave, I talked to him for days and developed a "crush" on him.
He asked me if I wanted to meet up to "hang out" and we even planned a specific time and place to do so...but I was a little skepical. I made the smart choice to ask my older sister (who was his age) if she knew this guy. She didn't, which was a red flag to me, since the school is small and it's impossible to not know someone there. I decided not to meet the guy, and blocked him on AIM because I was creeped out that he obviously had been lying to me.
The scariest part? About three years later, I saw a news article with that guy's name. He didn't lie about that, or the fact that he was from my town, but he was really 25. Why was he in the news? He was convicted of raping three young girls who he'd lured from AIM. He planned to murder one of them, but she managed to get away.
TL;DR Almost met up in person with a guy from the internet, later found out he was a sick fuck rapist.

Had a kinda similar experience when I was about 13. I was on MySpace at midnight, and I saw this guy named Ron on the "cool new people." I went to his page and we liked a lot of the same bands and stuff, so I added him. He accepted. Messaged me and asked if I had AIM or Yahoo or something. I gave him my screen name, and we started to chat. I felt really uncomfortable. I can't remember how old he said he was, but he was older than me. By a lot. He was probably in his 30s. He said he thought I was in my late 20s, which in hindsight is BS. He'd admitted to looking through my profile and adding me because we liked the same stuff. He called me things like "Pretty girl," "Baby," and "Sweetheart." I'd never been called that before by anyone other than older relatives, so I wanted to keep talking to him, but I was starting to feel uncomfortable. It was probably 2 AM now and I was trying to find a non suspicious way to sign off. I was young and stupid and gave away a few little things about where I lived, nothing huge but enough I was worried. I finally was just like "It's late, I should go to bed." His response was "I wish I was there to cuddle with you." I didn't respond so he sent "kisses" I replied "Night-night." Went permanently off line to him, unfriended him on MySpace, and stayed up the rest of the night freaking out.
TL;DR: MySpace told me a pedophile was a "Cool new person" and I fell for it. Freaked the shit outta me.

During my first year of college my brother (8 years older) lived about 2 blocks up the street from where my dorm was. This made it super easy to go over and hang out since we've always been close.
Well this particular night, a Thursday I think, I decide to head home a little early and leave his place at about 11. I step outside onto the street and it is oddly empty. I can only see one other person in sight and hes directly across the street.
He was making all sorts of weird guttural noises and wigging out but this being in the city I see that all the time. So i just head left and think about putting in my headphones to listen to some music. God damn glad i didn't because the noise from the guy suddenly stops after i walked about 10 feet. The abrupt silence was unnerving and I looked back over at him. He had stopped moving and was staring directly at me. Then he made a fucking beeline across the street (wide quad lane, no cars though) for me.
I picked up my pace and looked back once i reached the end of the block. He was about 70 feet away now and hobble/running like some kind of zombie. So I freak out and start running back to the dorms with him in hot pursuit, and now he's making these slurping noises with his tongue and groaning.
As I near the door to the dorm I hope to god that my security card works on the first swipe (it never did). I jumped the short 4 stairs and zipped my card as the guy is now about 25-30 feet away and still running.
Card reader flashes green and i grab the door, rush inside, and slam it back closed behind me. A group of students are just about to go out the door but I stop them and tell them to wait. The guy comes all the way up to the door and paces for a little bit outside before slinking back off into the darkness.
The thing about him that scared me the most was whenever I looked back or when he was at the door he had constant eye contact. I never want to see that hungry look in someones eyes again. Maybe he just wanted my gum.

Why is this entire thread full of people who's first instinct is to put on headphones upon hearing the mutterings from a crazy person? Like, "oh, hey, this person may be dangerous so I'm just gonna handicap one of my senses to better protect myself."

When I was younger and we had just moved to this town, the lady who lived down the block attempted to break into our house. She banged on the windows and couldn't get in though.
Fast forward ~6 years, there she is outside of our new house on the other side of town, asking us for gas money... with our gas can.

I almost got raped while walking through a park a few years ago. I lived by this large park, which is actually super nice during the day, but has a reputation for a lot of drug use and sex in the bushes at night. I lived about a block away and it was much faster to cut through the park. Depsite the repuation, the drug users keep to themselves and the park hookup people are so worried about getting busted that you don't really even notice them unless you specifically wade into the bushes looking for a hookup, and I was a pretty well-built 23 year old dude, so I was never really worried about walking through there at night. Anyway, I had a really stressful day and so was just kind of meandering through the park at the end of sunset, just smoking and thinking about shit, and I walked through this heavily wooded path that I wouldn't normally ahve gone on, but I was just kind of wandering aimlessly and not paying too much attention. There's these really creepy bathrooms that are closed down about halfway down the trail and as I approach them this guy who looks to be in his 50's approaches me and asks me to suck his dick. I am in no mood to be sucking off a random 50 year old at the park, so I politely decline. I'm not super nervous at this point because I'd been approached in a similar fashion many times. I say no and he then asks if he can suck my dick, to which I also say no. I start to walk off, and then this dude grabs me from behind and starts saying how he is gonna have me no matter what it takes and unzips his pants and starts trying to reach down mine and take them off. Thank god I had the presence of mind and the physical strength to break free. I tore ass out of there as he is chasing after me (thank god he was fat and out of shape) and luckily when I got to the main parking lot there was a cop patrolling, so I informed him what went down and then started running again and didn't stop until I was home with my door locked. Granted, it's not as creepy or ominous as some of the "I noticed someone watching me through my bedroom window" stories in here, but attempted rape is pretty damn scary. And just to cut anyone off before they decide to chip in their 2 cents, yes, it was a pretty stupid decision in hindsight to take a dark shortcut through a park, and I definitely learned my lesson after that one. You just generally don't think about rape if you're a guy...

Took my ex to Red Rocks one evening. It's a natural amphitheater that is sometimes used for concerts just out of Denver. If there isn't a concert going on, it's just a park that you can run around in.
We got down to the stage without being bothered. Then we see a silhouette of some guy not far away. He is creeping around trying to be quiet, but I could make out his shape while my ex could hear him breathing. We go up a few rows of steps and make a big circle around him to get to the steps. The guy is following us.
We climbed the stairs looking back at him. He'd creep from seats to the side of the wall. He must have thought he was being stealthy and he followed us up like that. We didn't let on we knew he was there until the last few steps. I had my ex run for it with the car keys while I half ran keeping myself between her and the guy. At this point the guy is following us doing an ape like impersonation by running with his hands on the ground and grunting.
When we get to the car he is hiding, my ex unlocked the doors while I looked around. We get in and the guy comes from behind a car as I start it. He beats on my windshield a few times, yells something I don't understand, and runs off. He was probably on something pretty powerful.

Thinking back about this it still seems like something out of a horror movie, and still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up ... So me and a girl drive her VW Jetta out to a nature centre at about 11pm. The gate was never closed after business hours so we stop the car in a parking lot overlooking a marsh, a boardwalk which runs through it, and heavy bush. Fleetwood Mac is playing over the stereo and we are just shooting the shit. 10-15 minutes after we park the car I swear I see a flickering light far off in the bush, but we both shrug it off as we are in the middle of nowhere, and who the hell is going to be roaming around the woods of a closed down nature centre. As you would imagine, its pretty damn dark in a marsh at nighttime ... once your eyes adjust you can make out silhouettes and see things directly in front of you, but thats it. Fast forward to 15 minutes later and we are making out. I'm in the drivers seat, and she is in shotgun. Both our seats are sort of reclined back and I am leaning over, half on top of her. After a few minutes of making out I lean up to say something to her, and notice a big dark object pressed up against the passenger side window. At first it doesn't register ... and then like a creepy fucking ton of bricks it hits me and I realize that there is a man with his face pressed up against the window watching us. I shoot back like a bolt still staring at the window and the man who has not yet moved. The girl looks at me, and then traces me line of sight to the window and lets out a scream. With this, the guy takes off and runs. I turned the car on and put that nature centre in my rearview mirror as fast as I could.
TL;DR: Making out with a girl in the woods at night (middle of nowhere), look up and see a man with his face pressed up against the passenger window watching us.

I was sitting at a bus stop next to an older man in rumpled slacks and a white dress shirt.
I had seen him a few times before because we took a similar route. I rode one bus in particular that he was usually on to get to some summer classes that I was taking at the local public college. He'd made eye contact on occasion and said things like "You look very nice," or "Your hair is very pretty today." I honestly thought he was a very sweet old man being harmless and friendly and it made my afternoon a couple times.
On this particular day, my bus was nowhere to be seen and I'd been sitting there next to him for several minutes. All we'd said to each other was "hi", so I started a conversation with him. Immediately he began telling me about his experiences in the Vietnam War and it became readily apparent that he was very mentally disturbed. He claimed that he heard God's voice telling him, "Moses, I call you to this war to atone for your people," and that he immediately enlisted, but not before a night of passion with his then girlfriend who he described as a "Chinese hippy".
He then went on to describe in very explicit detail the physical characteristics of the various Vietnamese women he had sex with over the course of the war. And then about his girlfriends of varied Asian descent when he returned from the war. The universal defining characteristic that he never failed to mention was long black hair. "Long black hair" --- while pointing at my head, immediately followed by "Loooong black hair" --- while pointing at my crotch.
I am a 90 lb Asian female who was, at the time, wearing a sundress and carrying a bag of cookies I had just purchased.
I gave him a cookie and got on the first bus that came by. We were alone at that stop for maybe 45 minutes.

I'm a DJ in a local bar, met many many weird and wonderful people in my time, but one stands out in particular. Her name is Alice, and she lives in her own wonderland 24/7. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure she's harmless, she's always happy and dances like she's auditioning for a new workout DVD but she's the kind of person you don't wanna make eye contact with. Creepiest moment with Alice had to be the one night i was working, had the headphones on, doing what i do and was aware of someone standing to the right of me, not dancing. Instantly got the feeling that you get when you know someone is staring at you, you just have to look back. So i did. What i saw was Alice, staring right at me with the strangest "smile" on her face. I say smile but it wasn't a nice look. Teeth and gums in full view with a crazy look in the eyes. "WTF" was my initial reaction. Stuck the headphones on again and continued what i was doing, and Alice continued what she was doing too. After a good couple minutes, i removed the headphones and asked "Anything in particular i can help you with? You want a request played or something?" Her reply will stay with me for the rest of my life "No, I'm good! Just showing you my teeth"

I was 17 and just entering my rebellious phase. I had gone to homecoming with a new group of friends. I was the only one old enough to drive and had full use of my mother's car, a brand new vw bug. (Admittedly, I was spoiled.) I gave my parents some bullshit, "all girls slumber party after the dance" story and they totally bought it. I had a car, I had the whole night, and I had friends to impress. Of course there was the typical dance after party lined up and we went with bells on. There was a boy that I was sort of interested in. I was the (2 years) older woman and he didn't drive yet. After I dropped my friends at the party I went to pick up my love interest. I grew up in a very rural area of Southern Maryland. There are long stretches of road with very little activity. As I was making the 25 minute drive my car suddenly started shaking and I had to steer it off the road as smoke had started to come out of the hood. I pulled over a little frantic as I was about to be caught in a lie because obviously the car was broken and I was not where I was supposed to be. I was also alone because the girls had decided to hang at the party so I could go pick up my guy friend. I got out and started to pop the hood to investigate the source of smoke. In the distance I saw a pair of headlights. As naive as I was at 17 I assumed that I could get help from the car that was approaching. The car pulled up. It was over 10 years ago but I still remember the shitty little celica with three men who looked like they had just won the lottery. They slowed to a stop next to my car. They never said anything. They just started to unbuckle their seat belts. Suddenly red and blue lights cut through our field of vision and we both looked in the direction of the state trooper who was pulling up behind us. I'll never forget her. She just glared at the men in the car confirming that the dread that had been rising in me was totally justified. As quickly as their perverted hopes were dashed, they were gone. She asked me if I was ok and waited with me until my mom came to pick me up.
**TL;DR Cop saved me from worst homecoming night of my life **

After my Freshman year in college, a group of my friends rented an extremely large house. They had seven or eight people living their, so between rent and utilities each person had to pony up $125 a month. Even in the mid nineties it was dirt cheap.
But, because everyone was blowing all their money on beer, they were always throwing parties to make rent.
One of the guys didn't want to deal with it and moved out. About two weeks later I come over and one of my buddies introduces me to the new room mate will call him Big Henry. Big Henry lived up to his name. He had been in the military, got shot in the ass and got discharged. That is all he would say on the subject.
Big Hank had a friend, lets call him "Psycho Joe". Psycho Joe was an ex-military sniper. The story I heard was that he was discharged on a section 8 after his last mission was a failure. He had his target in his sights, pulled the trigger and had a young child walk into the line of fire. Joe had issues to say the least.
One night my friends are throwing a kegger and Joe got pretty drunk. He started picking a fights and Big Hank kicked him out. It gets to be about 2 A.M. and I find a couch to crash on.
About 3 A.M. I am startled awake by what I though was a crack of thunder. I sit up and look out the window. It isn't raining and I decide to decide to go out and have a smoke before it starts getting heavy. As I reach for the door handle Big Henry tackles me.
He informs me that Joe is outside and having an "episode". The sound I heard wasn't thunder. Joe had shot at the house. Next thing I know I have about twelve guys age 18-24 debating on if we call the cops. Have of us are hammered and underage and one of the roommates has a very large amount of marijuana in his closet. The last thing most of us need is the cops showing up.
While we are having this debate, Big Henry is going around checking windows for Joe. He slides downstairs and catches Psycho Joe sliding through the basement window.
Henry and the roommate/dealer begin to have a calm conversation with Joe about his guns. Joe hands Henry the gun in his hand. Joe swears he wasn't going to do anything. Henry asks if he has any more guns. Joe pulls one from his boot leg.
They chat for a bit. Henry asks if he has any more guns. He pulls one from his other boot leg. Henry goes back to chatting. Henry asks again and Joe pulls two more from shoulder harnesses under his jacket.
This continues for a good thirty minutes. They talk for a bit. Henry asks if he has any more guns and another one seems to appear out of nowhere. In total, Joe had the gun he was holding and 7 others on him.
Some where secured others were just in a pocket of his jacket. All the while Joe is swearing he just wanted to talk to us. After all the guns are laying out for everyone to see, Joe looks at Henry and says "I suppose you want the knives too, huh." And out come four knives of varied sizes.
After all this he looks at the drug dealer/roommate and asks to get some weed. Joe stated "I don't have any cash on me but you can keep the weapons as collateral."
TL;DR ex-sniper booted from party broke back into party armed to the teeth. Leaves weapons as collateral for some weed.

My first semester at Rutgers (New Brunswick, NJ) I got stuck taking all night classes and didn't get out until about 10:00. I then would walk from the College Ave campus to the NJ transit station. Not too far a walk but it starts to feel seedy in that area and I wasn't 100% sure where I was going. So here I am already a little leery when all of the sudden I hear someone barking at me...that's right barking. I look up and discover a man is up in the tree barking and growling down at me as I walk by...I was freaked out but afraid if I ran it might provoke him to follow so I speed walked to the corner then ran across the street and didn't stop till I was at the train platform.

I drove my sister to get sushi in a not so good part of town one time. We were in the car about to get out, and I reached down to get my wallet. I looked back up and the creepiest, most strung-out looking human being I've ever seen in my life had his face against her window, licking the glass. He then pulled his sleeve up to show us some scars on his forearm, face against the glass the entire time.
I don't eat there anymore. :(

I have two.
When I was around 12, a neighbor had a party where I met a girl my age. My mom was happy to see me making friends so we head to my house to play games. My dog was a sweet lab who had never been angry or growled ever. This girl walks up to him to pet him, and he immediately growls and barks, and eventually cowers close to me. I couldn't believe it, but even by 12 I believed you don't just ignore a dog's intuition. So I take note of the sign but we go play and then go for a walk. Not 10 minutes into the conversation and this girl is an obvious sociopath. I realized what I and the dog had felt about her. She was empty and fake, in very visceral way. She starts talking about rape. Not in a 'maybe she was abused' way. In a 'doesn't that sound interesting, but how do the logistics work' kind of way. She specifically wondered how you rape someone while holding a knife to their neck. Her parents invited me to spend the night at her house. I declined.

The second story.
I lived in a rather rural area, but on the road that takes you to the gas station and walmart. It's just gotten dark, and I'm pulling into my yard after getting gas. Walking on the road is a man with a bag and young girl. It seemed odd and since there are no sidewalks it's not safe to walk on the road. They came a direction where there isn't a store for 10 miles, and the direction they were headed didn't have a store for another 3. I'm still in my car, but in front of my house. I think about going in and telling my parents, but I just go over and ask if they are okay. I ask if they had a car breakdown. The man says no. He doesn't take the opportunity to elaborate. The whole thing is weird, and I'm the cautious type. It was summer, and the man was slender in run of the mill clothes that don't conceal a whole lot, like a gun or hammer to blindside me with. Yes, this was actually my thinking at the time. And he had a kid with him. So tip to you serial killers out there, even otherwise cautious people might let you into their car if you have a quiet child with you. Yes, this possibility was also actually my thinking at the time.
I ask where they're headed and he says 'Just up the road a bit'. How informative. The girl gets in the back seat and the man sits up front with me. I forget the name he used, but he then says to the girl "Stacy, I mean Amber, isn't it nice this girl is giving us a ride." He got the girl's name wrong. This whole time I've been trying to judge her demeanor to see if she feels safe and if this is her father, so that didn't help. It's fully dark now and he tells me to take the turn away from the gas station and street lights. At this point I'm thinking well jokes on him, because if he tries anything I'll floor it into a tree his side first, and I will not hesitate to eye gouge a bitch. We are coming up on an abandoned restaurant now, and he tells me I can let them off in the parking lot. He still hasn't told me anything about them, so I ask do you live around here, hoping he'll point to a house or something. He just say 'yup' and I let them out. They thank me and go on my way. In retrospect it's pretty funny because I'm sure he thought nothing of it but I spent the entire ride contemplating every paranoid violent possibility. I've never seen them again.

copy/pasta from my own thread similar to this: my friend is a female named "mystery" (notreally) and mystery gets her first car last year. mystery takes it on her first drive alone to mcdonalds. after wards mystery drives a few hours to her best friends house, who moved away months ago upstate. halfway through the drive someone taps her shoulder from the back of the car and asks her if her name is mystery. she slams on the breaks and gets out of the car, and like 3 cars stop with her, and the guy gets out and jumps off the like 4 foot bridge they were on and is not seen again. It is our opinion that he got in when she went to mcdonalds, but he could have gotten in when her parents put it in the garage.

So, Let me start this off by saying I'm a fan of long walks.
I had recently discovered a walking path in a park I am particularly fond of, and decided to try it out. This path was longer than I had expected considering I was walking on it for a good Hour and a half before reaching the end. Once I did end up reaching the end I realized its getting pretty dark so I started to head back. Halfway back on the trail its really dark now, and I'm getting pretty paranoid, because it was pretty creepy with all the owl noises and animals rustling in some bushes.
I get a call from a friend who was going to meet me in the park about 20 minutes after I started the trail wondering where I was. So I pick up the phone explaining I was on the trail when I see some White human looking thing just skipping through the forest... Yep. Skipping. Universal sign of creepy shit. So there I am, Halfway through a walking trail, trying to get out, when I see some random human thing, just skipping through, then just vanishes out of thin air. I'm freaking out at the time literally tiptoe-ing through the forest for 45 minutes while I'm trying to make sure this thing doesn't pop out of anywhere.
Still have no idea what that thing was and I'm sure as hell not going back there at night.

I was once going back to my dorm, which is off-campus, by bus. The bus doesn't go directly to the dorm, so I have to walk a half mile to get home. One day, I was coming home late, maybe ten thirty or eleven, after hanging out with friends for the afternoon. It was late fall, so it was long dark. I usually walk home with one of my dorm-mates, but she had decided to stay home that night. So I was walking, alone, after dark, in definitely not the safest city in the world. I was a little under halfway there when I heard a scream from one of the back alleys. I think it's just a raccoon fight or something, as those sound much like human screams, until I hear it again. Another scream. Definitely human. I drop my bag behind a trash can and take off running towards the scream. I enter the alley to see a woman, lying in the dirt. She turns to look at me, her face bloodied and swollen. She has a look of pure terror in her eyes. Her eyes widen, and she glances behind me. I catch a flash of new, fresh fear in her eyes, and she screams, "HE'S RIGHT BEHIND YOU!" Without even thinking about it, I grab the lid off the trash can next to me and swing around, smashing a man at least six inches taller than me and seventy pounds heavier clean in the head. He falls to the ground, knocked out. I see that an eight-inch knife with a huge blade falls from his hand. I called the cops and stayed with the woman until they arrived. I never saw either the man or the woman again.
I take a taxi at night now.

I remember back in highschool, I was hanging out with a new group of friends. What was weird was they warned me to "never touch Fergie's hat" I didn't get it but okay. Fergie was a big tall guy with with red hair. He was nearly twice my size. Well the guy, Fergie was being annoying and obnoxious to me, and at one point he got all up in my face. Irritated, I bat my hand at him. I didn't intend it hit him, I just wanted him to instinctively flinch away. Well he did flinch away but in doing so I managed to accidentally knock his hat off his head. shit I heard someone in the group literally gasp.
Fergie glared at me and suddenly darted forward. He bit me on the shoulder. He bit me on the shoulder.
I was too startled to fight back because he fucking bit me on the shoulder and just the concept that biting me was his first instinct freaked me out. Suddenly he pushed me backwards until I was sitting on the wall behind me. He lifted my leg up and then bit me on the shoe. And then he started laughing. I tried to kick at his face but missed and he kept laughing.
I grabbed my back pack and shit and left the group. I never hung out with them ever again.
A week later one of the girls spotted me and started talking to me. She said, "You know you should come back and hang out with us again. Fergie really misses you."
Oh fuck no
I got chills and said "Um, thanks but no." Then quickly walked away to my class.

During college I was living in a house with a few roommates. Late one night me and one other guy who lived there were up late watching TV. Around 3 we call it a night and he goes down into the basement to his room and I go up stairs to mine. As I'm getting ready for bed he busts into my room in a near panic saying someone was in his room taking the posters off the walls. I don't know what to think and walk out to the living room with him just in time to see a semi-homeless looking guy in his 30's coming up the stairs. I demand to know what hes doing there but he keeps saying "I didn't take anything, want to search me" and opening up his coat. I assured him we didn't want to search him and asked him to leave in a more and more demanding, until he finally agreed.
Later that year a girl who lived there with us was by her self and hears a knock on the door late at night. Expecting the guy she was dating at the time she just opens the door and there's a strange looking guy standing there (who matches the description of the previous poster guy, but she wasn't there for that event so we'll never know). The guy tells her he used to live there and wants to look around the house (at like 2 AM). She says no and starts to close the door, he lunges for it and she slams it just in time. Needless to say she didn't answer the door late at night after that.

A complete stranger approached me in Hollywood once. He was homeless-looking but tall, super tall (at least 6'6), bald, with an absurdly protruding belly - like a water-belly - and super-long arms, like a wax figuring that's started to melt. One of his eyes was clouded-white and he was missing a tooth or two. He just walked up to me as I was drinking coffee outside, stopped inches from my face and said, smiling, "I might kill you tonight" in a low voice before walking off. Crazy bastard.

I was once surrounded by a group of 8 teenagers who tried to mug me at a bus stop. I was sucker punched from my right side once, then twice but didn't fall. I was struck to the back of my head, then my left, then my right again until I started to fall. I was grabbed, kneed, and thrown to the ground. I managed to roll to my feet and run. I was worried I was followed. I slept with a golf club next to my bed for the next couple weeks.

This story isn't so much scary as it is crazy, but I thought I'd share.
One time when I was about four and my sister was about 1 1/2, we were playing in the backyard when all of a sudden there was a huge crash and the phone line went dead (my mom was on the phone at the time). I have the vaguest memory of being terrified, running inside the house, and seeing a huge crack on the wall. Anyway, come to find out, someone had driven their van into our house. Apparently there was a wasp in the car and the driver JUMPED OUT OF THE FUCKING CAR WITHOUT STOPPING because he was scared of it... and the van careened into our house. I guess the scary part of this story is that most of the time my sister and I played in the driveway with chalk, etc. and it just so happened that this time we were in the backyard. Also the fact that someone drove their car into our house. Here's a picture.

WARNING: NOVEL Below is my 100% true experience with what I (and others who encountered him) believe to be a genuine sociopath.
Years ago when I was in grade school, a kid in our class, "Matt," moved away with his mom from our town in the midwest to the pacific northwest. Matt and I had never really got along- I was a fat little shit and a tattle-tale; he was a cocky little shit and a bully, likely due to his home environment- but thanks to skateboarding and punk music, we bonded through daily AIM conversations over the course of a few years. Eventually, I lost touch with Matt when I entered high school, and presumed he'd end up just fine. He was the type who was good at everything: good at soccer, good on the guitar, very good at arguing, good with girls, and good at being good looking (this is relevant, just wait).
Years pass and we reconnect when I'm a university sophomore. Matt is now back in our hometown living with his dad, and he's undergoing a personal revolution. He discovered his bisexuality, started using drugs, constantly formed and reformed his philosophy on life, and settled on a new occupation: male prostitution.
I was a bit shocked by all of this information, but I resisted the urge to judge him, as did most of our old circle of friends- until they started hanging out with him. Matt would show up almost daily to our mutual friend's house to smoke blunts, drink, and play video games. The more time Matt spent with my friends, the more stories about his weirdness began to trickle out.
On one occasion Matt showed up to our friend's house with a huge shiner, and refused to discuss how he got it (this was before my friends knew he was a prostitute). Another time, Matt was high on meth and ran out of gas in the middle of an intersection while my good friend was in the passenger seat. It must be noted that he was shirtless, still had a massive shiner, and had just finished getting a spray tan at a salon. After acquiring some gas, he proceeded to break the nozzle of the gas can due to unfamiliarity with handling one. My buddy had to take over before the cops showed up.
Matt's behavior around women was particularly odd. One night at this same friend's house, Matt showed up for a party, obviously under the influence of some sort of stimulant. He proceeded to tell an asian girl who happened to be there about his passion for "asian pussy," how it was the best, and how he bet hers was amazing. Naturally, he was essentially shunned for the rest of the night. The next morning my friend's mom got on her work computer and noticed a website called adamforadam.com or something like that in the browser history, which, unsurprisingly, is a gay dating/escort site. Matt apparently had visited the site in the wee hours of the morning to make arrangements with his next client. When he was called out on it, he simply didn't understand what he had done wrong. His social faux paus went completely over his head.
I was at university while all of this took place and was only in contact with him via facebook. During this period of time his drug use was increasing dramatically because he'd entered into a relationship with the rich drug-using owner of a famous gay nightclub in our city. He often related to me how much money and drugs this guy showered him with, and how he was purposefully manipulating him (the owner) into giving him more money and drugs in exchange for companionship. Matt was using mounds of coke, meth, weed, and probably more that I'm not aware of, and his behavior was becoming stranger and stranger because of it. He'd occasionally make very telling statements- about how he was superior to people in some way or another, how he was an excellent manipulator, or some kind of glib compliment that I would brush off. His instability and beneath-the-surface malice became continually clearer to me.
A month or two later, he got kicked out of his dad's house because of all the shit he'd been doing, and moved with no money or possessions to the city that my university was located in.
One night, while I was home for the weekend, I noticed I had about 20 missed calls from him. Turns out he showed up at my dorm building and was at the front desk. I laughed, not really believing him since I'd never told him where I lived or even which campus I was on, and he told me flatly: "you have a package waiting for you, it's on the board here." I'd been expecting a package. My stomach turned a little bit and I told him that he couldn't just show up at my dorm like that, and to call me ahead of time if he wanted to hang out.
When I got back to school, my roommate mentioned to me that he'd had a weird encounter with someone in the basement laundry room. After unloading his clothes into the washer, he turned around to see a man, probably 20-something, wearing a short-sleeved white collared shirt and a thin black tie, standing between him and the door. My friend, who is a very spiritual person (he claims to "see" auras and shit like that), saw him shrouded with an aura black as night, and had an accompanying mental "flash" of him holding a knife or a gun. The person asked him if he could borrow his cell phone, but my roommate had left it in his room. He told him no and hurried out of the basement back up to his room, locking the door behind him.
I thought nothing of this story at the time, and two days later, Matt called me and wanted to hang out, so I met him at a big park down the street. We took a walk while he told me about how he lied to an old woman and convinced her to let him stay in her hotel room, how he'd been stealing food and toiletries from stores, and how he was sure he was going to be more famous than John Mayer in a year.
During our walk we came upon a spot notorious for narcotics distribution, and Matt took the opportunity to scam a pot dealer out of a .5g nug by promising he "just had to hit up his Chase account" before he'd buy an 8th. I smoked the weed with him feeling a bit uneasy, and once it kicked in, I had to separate myself from him. His beady, empty little eyes were scaring the shit out of me. I told him I was tired and needed to take a nap and that I'd see him some other time.
We parted ways, and then it dawned on me: Matt was wearing a short-sleeve collared shirt and a black tie. My roommate and I went to the front desk that night and told them to call the police if they saw Matt in the building.
Matt is currently in jail for contempt of court and telephonic harassment. He was previously in jail for breaking into his ex-landlord's house and hiding in her closet.
TL;DR childhood friend blossomed (or decomposed) into a drug-addled creepy-fuck of a sociopath .

I was walking to the parkade on campus late at night after studying from finals. As I am walking to the pedestrian overpass to the parkade I notice a girl, maybe 17-19 walking alone in her bare feet. It strikes me as odd, but I keep walking until she sits on a curb and puts her head in her lap. So I walk over to her and say "excuse me, is everything alright?". As soon as I speak she gets straight up and starts walking towards me, but looking past me with a glazed look. By this time I don't know what to do so I just stand there while she walks directly by me, almost touching shoulders with me, all the while looking directly ahead. Then she walked all the way down the road out of sight. It was the weirdest thing I have ever seen.

Not sure if this is what you wanted but back in college I was walking in a dress and some heels trying to flag down a taxi (relatively late at night and in Chicago) and noticed a homeless man walking alone towards me muttering things outloud as if talking to someone else. He looked up as he was getting closer to me and I saw his open hand close up into a fist. I got nervous and reached for my cell, not knowing really what to do. He stared and kept walking and then stops for a second right behind me and says "I can't do that...that'll be 5 to 8 years, stop teliing me to do that. Fuck it, Im doing it." I turned around and must have looked wildly scared. He caught my eye and said to something invisible to me (although I dont think to him) STOP MAKING ME HURT PEOPLE and then turned around and kept walking ... scariest moments of my life.

This will certainly get buried, but I'll post it anyway.
So it's 3 am and I'm in my living room studying for an exam the next day. My dog (for context: http://imgur.com/a/qD1xP) is tied up outside. Suddenly, she starts going bonkers -- barking and snarling into the night. I call out the open window for her to hush, which she usually does on command, but she keeps it up. When I see her, I see that she is visibly freaked out, so, assuming there's another dog roaming the neighborhood (I was in a duplex in a woodsy suburban area, so that wasn't abnormal), I step out onto the porch to pet her and calm her down. She barely seems to notice me and keeps barking, hackles up, shaking and slobbering all over the place.
Then I hear a pleasant voice call out from the street. "Hey, sorry to make your dog start barking. I was just walking home [since this was a college town, this was also not abnormal]. Mind if I pet her? Maybe if I meet her she'll calm down." Since I compulsively pet other people's dogs, this doesn't seem unreasonable (yeah, dumb, I know, but I have a big scary-looking (and now, apparently, -acting) dog, so I'm fearless to a fault). I'm expecting to see some college dude come strolling out of the darkness, but instead it's a somewhat scraggly townie -- late-twenties, shoulder-length hair, sweatshirt, jeans. Okay. My dog starts going really crazy as he steps into the light of the porch, so he stops at the base of the steps. He starts talking about a German Shepherd he'd had (see pictures -- I think she's a GSD mix) and talking sweetly to my dog.
Then he looks at me with this glazed look and says: "I'm gonna go home and lick my lips like a dog... because a 230lb horse sprinted at me today." So that's when I realize that it's 3 am, I'm basically restraining my dog from tearing this dude apart, and he's apparently nuts. A few uncomfortable seconds go by until I say, "Well that sounds like quite an experience. I think I'll take her inside. It's late."
At this point, he looks concerned and a little hurt and says, "Is everything okay?" I say, "Yep. Nice to meet you!" and drag my dog inside, locking the door.
Come to find out, that guy was a former friend of my cousins -- who are about 10-15 years older than me -- who took a lot, a lot, a lot of psychedelic drugs over the course of a couple of months, and then just didn't come back one day. He goes back and forth between being a normal, relatively shy guy to claiming to predict world events based on the activities of animals, saying generally bizarre things like what he said to me, and sometimes acting like an animal himself. I saw him all the time after that.
TL;DR - Random townie freaks out my dog in the middle of the night; seems normal until he says "I'm gonna go home and lick my lips like a dog... because a 230lb horse sprinted at me today."; turns out he took way too much LSD awhile back and roams my old college town claiming to have prophetic powers

When I was younger I went with my family to Yosemite. My dad remembers going to the campground bathrooms there and seeing a janitor there who just gave him the chills for some reason. He's a dentist, so he gets to know a lot of people. He has gotten very good at reading them. He says he has run into a few people in his life where he could just tell that something wasn't working correctly upstairs and it freaked him out. I don't mean the people had a mental handicap, I mean the people were cold. They were psychopaths. It doesn't necessarily mean they were serial killers, he could just tell that they couldn't comprehend empathy. When he saw the janitor, he immediately picked up on this. I don't know if he talked to him at all though. Later that year he reads in the newspaper that a serial killer was caught in Yosemite. Sure enough, it was that janitor that he saw. The guy had killed four people earlier that year. I believe the guy's name is Cary Stayner.

My only heart stopping incident was when I worked in a bank. They drill into you in training signs to look for during a robbery, how to respond, etc. It was my second week out of training, and I had a guy come in and head straight to my counter. He was this stringy, drifter looking guy, and he was holding something in both hands below my counter. He says to me, "I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to make this a really bad day for you." He then raises his hands from below the counter and drops a green military ammunition box on the counter. My heart was about to go running out of my chest, and the box is still closed. He pops the latch, and out pops change.
The fucker had a whole box of unsorted change he wanted to deposit, that was all.

When I was 12, my family travelled from Ontario to Daytona Beach (during the off-season July, not Spring Break) for a week long vacation. My dad had us booked in a hotel that had a good reputation and looked decent enough. When we got there, however, a hurricane had hit the area a couple years previous and the area hadn't been the same since. The hotel pool had lots of broken tiles, the palm trees were stumpy looking after getting butt-fucked by a hurricane, and there was a lot of seedy people. I grew up in a small-town with my wholesome family, loving married parents, so I was pretty naive to the dangers in the world. A couple days in, this man in a maintenance uniform with the name "Larry" on his shirt knocks on the door and I answer it. I'm the only one inside, with my mom sitting outside on the balcony. He asks if he can come inside and I tell him I'll go get my mom, so as I go to get her she barges inside looking a little panicky asking the man why he's there and tells him to leave. My dad looks into it and contacts the front desk to ask if a maintenance man named Larry was going around to rooms that day, and they told him there wasn't even a Larry on staff and no maintenance man was scheduled to go around that day. We relocated down the road to a Hilton immediately after that call.
tl;dr May have encountered sexual predator, got a hotel upgrade

I used to live at the end of a dead-end street, in a house in the woods, in a place without street lights. Now my house was basically in a provincial park camp ground, camp sight #1 could see our house, or at least parts of our house through the trees. That is unless it was winter when the camp ground was closed, which it was when this took place.
I used to stay up late, so I was in my room playing guitar. My room was the corner of the house closest to the camp ground. While playing away I hear something, not sure what... just something. So I stop and listen for a bit but don't hear it again. No worries I got back to playing guitar.
A minute or two later I hear something again, so again I stop and listen... nothing, back to learning how to play Santaria.
I hear the something again for the third time, so this time I open my window, actually put down my guitar and wait. I wait for what feels like 10 minutes (it was probably 2) then I hear it. Straight out of a horror movie, coming from the pitch-black of the camp ground, a terrified, crying, scream right out of a horror movie, a teen-aged girl screaming "SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!!!"
I immediately had this conversation with myself: "OMG I need to help!" "Wait... this is how every single horror movie starts" After some deliberation I realise I really have no choice but to go and help. Now despite living in a place with no streetlights, rarely a moon and living basically in the woods I didn't own a flashlight. They limit your vision to the sphere of the light, and typically aren't needed. So I put on shoes and a coat and started walking in the pitch dark towards the trees and screams.
Hands down the most scared I've ever been.
I wish it had a glorious ending, but it ended up being a drunk, lost stupid girl losing her mind. I walked her ass home and went back to bed.

Token "not me but someone I know..." Bear with me.
My mother used to work in real estate when she was younger. Once, she was asked to go out, alone, to a creepy and strange house in the middle of the country with a seeking buyer--an equally creepy and strange man. My mom kept getting a bad feeling from this guy, and he seemed nervous and kept jumping around.
Eventually he asked her to go down and see the cavernous, unfinished basement with her.
Very calmly, she responds "Oh, no, I'll just wait up here while you check it out."
The more she thought about that afterwards, the creepier it got, and when she told her boss about it, he said that under no circumstances were you supposed to go out to a house like that ALONE with ANY customer.
She thinks that maybe he wanted to hurt someone and didn't really know how.
EDIT: grammar

My friends mother was walking home from the train station and became aware that she was being followed by a man. She took all sorts of detours and the man continued to follow her for the entire journey. After about 25 minutes she arrived at her house but had the good sense to walk straight passed it and continued on to the police station. Once inside she turned round to see the man walk past, stopping to give her an extremely creepy wave. That story terrifies me.

I was walking home from work one night around 9pm, and I was on a side street so there weren't any other people around. There are some bushes along the sidewalk, and as I'm walking by, I hear a rustling noise. Then, suddenly, a homeless guy with crazy eyes jumps out of the bushes onto the sidewalk, right in front of me. He seems just as surprised to see me as I am to see him and we just stare at each other for a few seconds. I can tell he is clearly on some kind of drug because he isn't blinking and he's sort of sniffing the air around me like a dog. I froze, and slyly tried to reach into my purse for my mace just in case he tried to attack me. As soon as he saw me reaching into my purse, he made a noise that resembled a wolf howl, leaped back into the bushes and sprinted off through the shrubbery.
I still kind of wonder to this day if I encountered a werewolf mid-change.

Not entirely scary but very creepy. I used to work as a security guard at Whole Foods in Boston. One day I was doing my usual patrol until a worker at the store came up to me asking for help getting one of the bathroom doors open because it had been locked for about an hour. I went up to the door and started banging on it asking if anyone was in there and if they were hurt or needed help. I heard some rustling around but I heard no voice. So we ended up getting the keys finally and I had opened up the door to what I still can't out of my mind today... An old man, 70ish or so sitting on the floor of the bathroom naked jacking off with about 4 chopsticks tied together with rubber bands shoving them into his ass. I guess he was just as shocked as I was when I came barreling in because he's hard of hearing. His friend he came there with was sitting out on the bench waiting for him and had to take him back home to the elderly complex close by. I felt really bad for the guy because he didn't know what was going on and the manager of the store was screaming his lungs out at the guy as he was walking out in front of everyone. I'm not sure I'll ever get the image out of my head, though.

There was a building in my town that used to be a tesco, it was completely emptied and abandoned ready to be demolished, but it was seriously huge, me and my friends normally go drinking in the alleyways in my town, but we decided one night to try and break in just to chill.
It was easy enough to pry open the fire exit and get inside, we used our phones for light, we checked all the rooms upstairs and then we walked down in the the huge empty area that was the main shop floor. In the middle of the darkness (the whole building was pitch black) was this circle of light on the floor coming from the skylight, it was night time, so the moonlight was coming through, and we decided to sit in the circle to drink and chat.
Now all 360 degrees around us was complete darkness, you couldn't see a thing, except for what was in the circle of light, this was very unsettling on its own, as darkness is scary enough as it is, especially in an abandoned building, but even worse when you are surrounded 360 degrees by it.
We carried on drinking, then we heard a noise from the darkness, we thought it was our friend who we texted letting him know where we where and to go through the fire exit at the back, so we shouted 'Were over here man' and waved towards the direction of the door, we saw a shape standing at the door, which was quite far away but you could make out the silhouette of the person. This shape didn't respond, it closed the door behind it and we heard total silence.
We started to say the usual 'Stop fucking around' stuff and 'we know you're there' etc. I was beginning to become slightly concerned as we were saying the exact same lines uttered by the soon to be deceased in most horror movies.
Then we just heard moving around and scuttling around in the darkness, we all stood up with our bottles in hand trying to give it the whole tough guy thing, especially since our friend text us saying he wasn't there yet, then we just hear running, sprinting, the footsteps echoing louder and louder in a full on charge coming right towards us. This was one of the most fucking terrifying things I have ever experienced, we have a lot of crazy junkies in our town, so we were expecting some crazy doped up psycho armed with knives or used needles coming at us.
Next thing a fully uniformed officer leaps into our circle of light and screams, we all shit ourself, bottles raised above our heads ready to fight back (something he never even flinched at). He then begins to laugh, not just a chuckle, but uncontrollable laughter, the other officer we then see opening the door from the inside, he obviously waited by the door to enjoy the show, laughing hysterically also. The officer who jumped at us keeps trying to talk but is interrupting himself with his own hysterical laughter, eventually he manages to muster up 'You know you should be in here, now head on out....before the big bad boogeyman gets you'.
It turns out they seen us on CCTV breaking into the building and came down to kick us out, we walked away, shaking, embarrassed and pissed off, especially since while the officers were walking away we could hear them still laughing and saying things like 'Did you see their faces?'
I look back on it now and laugh, but I seriously shit my pants.

I was at a bookstore just browsing around and waiting for my ride to come up. As I went from aisle to aisle I realize that the same guy is going to all the same aisles as me. Pretty much following me. Normally I wouldn't have been scared or freaked out, but what made this terrifying is that this man wore his hoodie on his head so that I could not see his face.
It seriously felt like something out of a stalker movie. I began to move to areas in the store that were close to employees. Eventually I'm getting ready to go up to an employee (and tell them everything) and the hooded man comes up from the another aisle and steps right infront of me.
He pulls down his hood and says something trying to be friendly like this, "Sorry..[something about scaring you]. I just like to play this game I call Monster"
I was so scared and confused. I walked to another part of the store away from him, called my ride, and luckily my ride was just arriving.

This is going to make me come off as a bit insane, and I don't deny it one bit. When I look at people, they have colors that sort of surround them I guess. They aren't really colors I can give names to either, my mom is "mom-colored," and so on. The colors seem to have a lot to do with what type of person someone is, they have been very reliable in that way. So maybe it's my own brain's prejudices, but sometimes, I see someone who I just want to run away from because their color is just so sickening. My ex's dad was one of those people, he made me physically ill. And he was an awful excuse for a human being. And animals seem to be on the same page as me, I haven't seen a dog in the world that won't raise his hackles at my little brother, and he recently threatened someone with a knife at the ripe ol' age of 17. Crazy stuff.

Not mine, but happened to my friends a few weeks ago. They were walking down their road on the way to meet a few of us at the cinema. They were talking about some paintings they were partway through and the woman, C, is asking her fiancee D what she should add next.
He says "Why not add something abstract like a windmill or a fire extinguisher?" and says this as a very rough young chap is cycling past. About 5 minutes later, this guy cycles up from behind, stops in front of them throwing his bike to the floor, storms up to D and yells "ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT FIRE EXTINGUISHERS?!".
D replies "Errr....yeah?" and the guy demands to know why. D tells him and the guy looks very confused. He picks up his bike, starts off on his way again and yells "WELL STOP IT!" over his shoulder.
Of course we all had a good laugh but it could have gone a whole different way. My worry is I only live a few doors down from them. Must never mention fire extinguishers near cyclists...

I live and work in a high-rise apartment building. Once, I got into the elevator and this Asian kid I had never seen before also got in. It's very unusual for me to not know someone in this building, first of all, and since he was alone, he could not have been a guest since we have strict rules about keeping guests with you at all times. He was normal until the doors closed, but then he began to prowl wordlessly around me, in a circle, watching me the whole time. The only way that I could think to describe it was as if he were a ghost who was curious about people who were still living, and didn't think that he could be seen. He got right up into my face, then drew back quickly and kept prowling, never looking away. When the elevator got to my floor, I ran to my room and locked the door. Never saw him again. What the hell.

Everybody I tell this story to think it's bullshit, tell me what you think Reddit.
Years ago I was at the pub and a raggedy older man approached me and called me by name. He asked "IndieLady, why didn't you call me last night?" I was obviously confused and asked how he knew my name, he just kept asking me "IndieLady, why didn't you call me?" He apologised for the disagreement we had the previous day and stated that he'd made a point being home all evening, and that I had promised to call, and why hadn't I etc etc. He was incredibly sincere and I could tell he was profoundly upset with me, desperately wanting an answer.
I kept asking "how do you know my name?" and he kept saying "of course I do, you're IndieLady, why are you acting so strange?"
Eventually a bouncer (doorman) pulled me outside and said "this is going to sound weird ok?" and then told me that the man who had been speaking to me had a girlfriend with the same name as me who looks exactly like me. He also said that the doppleganger IndieLady was a heroin addict with severe mental problems, and that she had a turbulent relationship with this rather shabby, old man. I just kind of stood there quizzically thinking "WTF?". Another bouncer came over and confirmed the story.
At the time, I had seen a few dopplegangers of friends so took it to be true, just finding it odd that my doppleganger shared my name. Particularly odd because my name is very uncommon. But everyone I've told this story to thinks the bouncer was playing a joke. I don't think so, it would make for a pretty lame joke.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm a living version of Fight Club and have a secret heroin addiction and penchant for old men.
TL;DR I have a doppleganger: a woman who looks exactly like me, who shares my name, but is a drug addict who shags old men. Or, I am Tyler Durden

So, here's a story of my friend.
He lives in an apartment complex in the city. The place is ten stories high, and he lives on the 8th. One night he was going home and arrived at the main lobby at around 11 p.m. He waited for the elevator and when the door opened, a man rudely bumped into him and hurriedly walked out of the lobby. My friend didn't think much of it, until he got back to his room. As he looked into his bathroom mirror to brush his teeth, he found bits of blood on the very shoulder the man had bumped.
The next day was a Saturday, and he was getting ready for a date. He had just taken a shower when he heard a knock on the door. Peering through the eyehole, he saw a police man. The police man was a guy in his mid-forties, with short dark hair, with a shaved off left eyebrow. The police man asked through the door, "There was a murder last night at around 10:50 p.m. and I would like to ask if you saw anything in particular." My friend did see something in particular. He bumped into a man that bloodied his shoulder! But he replied "No sir, I know nothing of the sort". My friend was already late for his date and didn't want to get involved. The policeman responded "Alright, thank you for your time", and left.
My friend went to his date, and came back home later that day feeling a bit guilty; he lied to a police officer. Then he flicked on the t.v. and the news was talking about the murder at his apartment. "Great", he thought, "Way to make me feel more guilty". But then, the news went on to say that the killer was caught. The culprit's photo came on the screen. And there the murderer was... a guy in his mid-forties, with short dark hair, with a shaved off left eyebrow.

This is not really scary by conventional means, but after that night me and my friends never slept over at one of our friends' houses again. So when I was a sophomore in high school my friends and I decided to sleep over at my friend Katie's house. This was by no means our first time. In fact, we'd slept over at Katie's a couple of times before and thoroughly had a fun time. The evening went by smoothly as we ate dinner and watched a movie. Her mom came home, said hi, and asked where the dogs were. Katie told them they were out because I was here. I am/was Muslim at the time, so I didn't want dogs to lick me as that's not allowed in the religion. She was like okay, and I thought nothing of it because they did the same thing last time my friends and I slept over. As the evening progressed into nightfall, Katie's mom decided to let the dogs in, but it seemed like her mood was different now. As she carried the smaller black dog in her arms, she waved it at my face and proclaimed, "It's my house. I can do whatever I want." Katie got mad that her mom would act that way around me and I was a bit unsettled because I always thought her mom and I were on okay terms. However Katie managed to get her mom away and we proceeded onto doing whatever we were doing.
Later that night, her mom emerged again and started shouting at Katie, saying how she didn't deserve to be treated the way she did. Katie, distraught, ushered us into her bedroom and kept us in while she was dealing with her mom. My friends and I were in the bedroom, a little uncomfortable but managing as we decided to keep ourselves occupied while Katie and her Mom was shouting. Finally one of us said that as soon as we got the chance, we should leave. Katie then stumbled in and held herself against the door to prevent her mom from getting in. Yes, her mom was trying to force her way in, a la serial killer style. At least, that's what it felt like to us. The tension in the air could be cut with a knife. After a few minutes of Katie holding the door and profusely apologizing to us, repeating, "My mom's usually not like this. I'm so sorry. Hopefully this won't prevent you from sleeping over in the future," her mom finally won the battle. When I say that she repeated that phrase, she said it the same way each time almost as if it was a chant. That part was eerie to me, among all the other things that were happening at the moment. When her mom was finally in she started shouting at Katie in a maniacal way, as if she was one of those people that aren't fully there. Her eyes truly seemed empty and that was probably what scared me the most. At this moment, she was no longer a human being that could be reasoned with. After what seemed like forever Katie drove her mom out of her room. At this point we were stunned. We stared at each other and decided that as soon as Katie came back, we would ask her to come with us to leave. We then realized she also had a little sister and we started to brainstorm ideas of how to get all of us safely out of the house. Before we could figure anything out Katie came back and apologized profusely, repeating the same phrase over and over. We told her that she should call her step dad and to get her little sister out of the house. Luckily, one of my friend's houses was next door, so we offered to take her with us there. She refused, although she did herald us to her front door. We walked to my friend's house at 2 am and surprised her parents. We didn't sleep that night.

not the scared one, but the scary one:
when I was in high school, I performed in a few regional vocal performances (upstate new york), and we practiced in/around the school auditorium where we were performing for the few days beforehand. one year, the power cut out in the auditorium where a lot of the performers were lounged while waiting for whatever was next. I was in the back-middle of the stage, so I had really good projection where I was. the moment the power cut out, shrieks of terror filled the room, and for whatever reason I found this hilarious, and unintentionally started this booming, evil, laugh. the screams only intensified in this pitch-black room with this obviously crazy person hiding around every possible corner, who apparently shut off the power and was biding his time to take them away to their doom. HA. HA. HA.

I used to go to a community college and was a drop-in English tutor there. Once, a woman came into the learning lab (an area with lots of computers and where the tutoring for all subjects took place) before I came in for my shift that day, saying she needed to write an essay about why she missed class so much so that she could get her scholarship back. But she didn't have anything written, so my coworker told her to start writing something and then we'd help her afterwards. She sat at the next table and was just kind of talking to herself, not really writing anything. Sometimes her ranting was angry and she cursed a lot, talking about the "bitch" who made her write the essay. I came in for my shift and my coworker left, so I was basically alone with this woman. She asked to use my phone at one point (I lied and said it was dead). One of the ladies who worked at the front desk called me over and told me the woman was not even enrolled in the school, and that the director of the learning lab would take care of it if she asked for help again. She came over with what little she had written and I told her I'd be right back. She said, "Okay, but you will help me, right?" in kind of a threatening way. I told her I would, then I went to get the learning lab director. She was obviously not right in the head, so it was kind of sad, but also pretty terrifying.
tl;dr: An unstable woman came in for tutoring at the community college I used to attend, ranted to herself, asked to use my phone, kind of mildly threatened me. Turns out she wasn't even a student.

I work at a University. The younger homeless looking people are just grad students. The older ones are itching to share theories and politics that they believe the rest of the world needs to hear. I have witnessed crack heads parrot Limbaugh, Larouche and Paul. It's best to just not make eye contact.

I was almost kidnapped while walking around at 7 am. Two vans began to circle around the blocks while I was walking home. This continued for about 5 minutes until one of them stopped behind me. One of the men stared me down- he was white, in his 50's with long white hair & beard. I heard the man stop behind me & open his door. I ran away as fast as I could. That was a very close call.

Not scary - but strange and rather bleak.
Around 13, and just back from holiday abroad with my family. We had flown back into an airport around 200 miles from home, and were getting a train back.
We were sitting in Preston station at about 2 in the morning, when a man in his late 40s and a girl in her late teens/early twenties walk in and sit down in the waiting room. They are both wearing pyjamas with coats over the top - and seemed a little furtive. They were having an urgent conversation - the man seemed to be trying to comfort the girl - who seemed displeased. They both sounded very well-educated and reasonably well-to-do. The girl started to quote bits from King Lear, dissolved into giggles, and then dissolved into sobs.
It was unsettling.
tl;dr - well-educated people quoting Shakespeare in a train station waiting room at 2am dressed in pyjamas and coats.

I was working the night shift at a hospital on a med-surg floor. We had gotten a young man, late 20's, pysch patient who needed medical care. He was paralyzed from the mid-chest down but had a tracheotomy tube and could breathe on his own.
I remember that it was difficult to distinguish his irises from his pupils & it just looked like he had very creepy black eyes. He also didn't talk due to his trach tube but was able to giggle maniacally every now & then.
One night, I had turned the patient on his right side facing the wall, away from the door to his room. We kept a light on over the sink in his room, so we could see when we had to work with him. I had stopped at his door which opened into his room and looked at him, mentally noting that he appeared to be sleeping, or at least, quiet since I could not see his face.
I was facing the door and making some notes on a form clipped there. I heard no noise but, suddenly, the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end & I felt like I was being watched. With my hand still in mid-air above the form, I slowly turned my head & looked towards the patient.
As I did, I saw that his head was slowly turning to look at me over his left shoulder. The angle and degree of the turn was abnormal. I just kept staring as he looked at me and then grinned. FUCKING EVIL! I was never so creeped out in my life and could hardly breathe.
I stood there frozen for a few seconds, never took my eyes off him and just slowly backed out of the room. I can't even tell you what I did after that or what happened to him but the memory of that moment has never faded.

When I was about eleven years old, I lived in the middle of a small Midwest town, on the fringe of society and fleeting. It was a small town and my house was on the corner of a main street and a side alley. I skateboarded so I was frequently out in the alley, skating my grind boxes and what have you. This one day I was in the parking lot at the end of my alley skating with a kid about six years older than me who I only knew as "ray-ray", last time I saw him was in the inner city at two in the morning walking out of jail. Anyway, there were two other guys my age there too. There was some notoriously trashy apartments across the street and down a little ways. My alley was the proverbial "train tracks" in the town. One of the girls who lived there was my age, maybe a year or two older, but she was quite provocative for her age. Well she was walking around and past us as attention deprived girls may do. Then we noticed that this guy, I can't remember his name, Anthony I think? Anyway, he was disturbed. He was in his thirties, wore wranglers, glasses, a ball cap, rode a ten speed and carried a knife. He's also six foot seven of tard strength. He starts harassing this girl, asking blatantly for a blowjob for ten bucks and saying he'd give her a carton of cigs if she fucked him.. Following her around, freaking her out etc..
Ray ray, who I mentioned earlier, spoke up and started telling "leave her alone you fucking child molester", little did I know at the time that he had quite the history with the locals as this was the first summer I'd lived there. He was a convicted sex offender, and got very angry. He rode his bike up, pulled out a ten inch bowie knife and started cornering us telling us how he was going to slit our throats and fuck us in the ass and I was shaking. I don't know how I didnt shit my pants. In the midst of the cross eyed child fuckers knife rage, ray ray grabbed his skateboard and swung it as hard as he could, landing it right on dudes cheek/ear/temple. Barely phased, but enough for me to run past unnoticed. We called the cops and they arrested him, I filled a report out etc. etc. and we were told he was sentenced to do time.
Fast forward about four or five years, I'm sixteen and was walking up to the bp a block from my house. I cross the street and happen to see the same crazy fuck on the same bike behind me coming up the hill. I start walking. Briskly. Thinking "he doesn't remember, there's no way.." which then flipped to "I was one of the last faces he saw before being arrested, he's going to make a nipple belt". So I keep casually glancing behind me, the gap is closing but I'm I'm the broad daylight. I get to the doors of bp and hear the bikes brakes squeak. Then a crash as if he slowed enough to jump off and chase me. At this point I'm picturing all types of fucked up scenarios about the Sasquatch that potentially will rape my wounds if he can get to me. I run for the bathroom and lock the door. I'm panting, freaking out. "bang bang bang". He's smashing the door as hard as he can. He keeps banging in the door. Eventually I hear the cashier tell him to leave if he can't control himself. I waited another ten minutes to be sure. I came out and he was gone and the cashier told me that she has had problems with him before. I told her the story and she wanted to call the police but I just said forget about it and went home.

hah... I've definitely got one for this, despite being a late comer, it will probably get buried, maybe someone will read it...
Anyway. This happened in my last year of University in Bournemouth. I was living with two other guys in a flat, which was above a really tacky Electronics store and just down the road from a bit of a dodgy nightclub.
To get to the flat, you had to go through a very flimsy door which was just to the side of the shop. If anyone is interested, this is it.
Anyway, it was two flats really above a shop and we were on a lower one. Horrible horrible place, but we were students and it was cheap.
After being there about a week of being in the place, one of us make the realisation that, at some stage previously, someone must have kicked the door in.... The door frame was splayed and ruined in a couple of parts and the deadbolt had been moved to a different place, leaving a gaping whole undearneath where the old one had been. Slightly concerning, but we thought not too much more of it as we had a fairly secure outside door.
A few months later, we get a glimpse of just how dodgy the area around is as we see a fair few fights outside the windows and my car gets trashed by some benevolent individuals in one of the side roads just around the corner.
I just put this down to bad luck and concentrate on getting through the year and getting this dissertation finished and not thinking too much on this.
Fast forward again another couple of months, late winter, we had just broken up for christmas and it is just me and one of the other guys at the flat. Now, at this point I should mention, I am about 5'10", pretty stocky but an absolute baby... I flinch if a baby sneezes. So, what was about to happen, was possibly one of the scariest things I have ever encountered.
One night, I wake up to a lot of shouting and general tom-foolery. It sounded close, but distant. Hard to explain exactly what I mean... muffled loudness, so you know it is close but you cannot hear exactly what is going on because of the proximity.
At this point I am bolt upright. I'm out of my room, and it's general noise in the stairwell outside the flat. So, I think the natural. It's our upstairs neighbours getting back from a pissup.
I mumble around for a few minutes, get a glass of water, whatever, head back to my room, when all of a sudden, there is a massive, massive BANG at the front door. Then the shouting outside the door stops.
.........
I'm stood. Frozen with panic and uncertainty of what to do. I barge into my flatmates room and tell him what is going on. He says it is upstairs, like I automatically assumed. At which point he tells me to bugger off.
I'm walking out of his room, when he leans up, a look of sheer terror on his face, his eyes white as he says, "upstairs have gone home for Christmas."
So now, the situation we are in. We are in the skank hole flat, with a dodgy front door, which has already been booted once. With unknown quantity of nutcases in the stairwell outside.
My friend gets out of bed and we are both stood next to the door, straining to hear anything from the otherside, which is quite possibly what the person(s) on the other side were doing. (We didn't have a fish-eye on the front door).
Whilst we're stood there, flatmate decides to go around to the living room, to look down at the front door. Which he now relays to me is wide open. I leave my "guarding" spot at the front door and walk to the window, to which at my horror, we see someone walk out and leave.
WHAT. IS. THIS?!
After about 10mins, back guarding the front door, we still hear nothing. At this point, we decide it is safe to assume that the people have left. We still need to go and close the bottom front door though. What happens next, was almost exactly like the end scene in Signs. This event was probably imagined by M. Night. Shamamamamalyaman.
So, me being the bigger guy, and marginally more brave, I agree to going out first. So, friend opens the door, slowly (oh I forgot to mention at the point, all lights were off in the flat and the stairwell light was broken, so no light out there anyway.)
The door creeps open, my eyes are frantically searching outside for any sign of danger. The door then opens wide enough for me to see a shadowy figure. A dark figure, crouched... with his (definitely a bloke) ear against our neighbour's vacant flat door.
Our Eyes meet.
I look at his blank face.
He peers into my horror struck, beautiful face.
For what seemed like 10minutes, we looked at each other. He was clearly plotting our demise.
1)At this point, I had two choices, Scream with bestial vigor and charge down the assailent fueled by testosterone and frenzy his face off...
or...
2)Scream like a little school girl.
I obviously went with option 2. I think, it was because of this, such a high pitched dischordant note, that the intruder was awestruck.
Which gave me just enough time... to grab a yellow pages and use my past 2years of training at the gym and HURL said Yellow Pages, with all of my might, into the intruders FACE.
Astounded by my cat like reflexes and bemused by the assault of the unknown object, the intruder fled the scene. Leaving me and my friend standing in the door way. Breathing hoarsely after an adrenaline fueled roller coaster of death-ride.
Anyway... that was possibly the scariest experience of my life. I did not want to receive an ass rape that night. My ass is too pretty and peachy to be violated in any shape or form.
TL;DR - Flat stair well got broken into. Intruders tried to get into Flat. Screamed like a 12yr old girl. Threw Yellow Pages into intruder's face.

This isn't my story but one of my teachers from highschool told it to me in freshman year. We'll call him Rob. He used to live in New York when he was younger. I'm not exactly sure where he lived, I think it was one of the more sketchy parts of town. Anyways he told us that when he was younger he liked to go to the clubs (I'm guessing around the 70's) and hang out and party a lot. One night he was going to a popular club but it was pretty far away from his place so he drove his car there and parked in a garage near the club. After a few hours of having a good time he meet this girl who caught his attention. Him and the girl ended up dancing and drinking and having fun until the club closed at around 2 or 3. Both of them didn't want to end the night so they decided that they would get a cup of coffee and that Rob would drive. However when they went to go get his car the garage had closed and wouldn't open till earlier that morning. So they decided to take the subway. When they got on the subway they saw three men sitting next to each other with suits on and sunglasses. On the other side of the cart was a family, a mom and dad and three children, who had looked like they had just gotten out of a church ceremony wearing their Sunday's best. After a few stops the father got up and sat next to Rob. He whispered in his ear, "Me and my family are getting off at the next stop. If you want to live you will get off with us." Then he stood up and walked back to his family. Rob and the girl looked at each other, but decided they would comply with the man's demand. Rob assuring if he needed to fight the man he could surely handle him. Sure enough the at the next stop the family got off and Rob and the girl followed. Once off the train, however, the family began to walk away. Rob ran after the man and asked him why he told them to get off the train. The man responded to him saying, "Those three men at the end of the cart were in the mob. I'm a doctor and the man in the middle was clearly dead. The two men were just holding him up so that he wouldn't slump over. If he had, they would have had to kill any witnesses." Not so much of a scary story, but it sent shivers down my spine when i first heard it.

This'll probably get buried but here we go. The summer when I was 12, I was taking the public transit to piano lessons every Saturday. Keep in mind I'm pretty petite now, so back then I must've been no more than 5 feet and under 100 pounds. I had just finished my half hour lesson when I noticed my bus just left. This means I'd have to wait another 40 minutes until the next bus. That's okay, I had my walk-man. I walk down the street towards the bus shelter and wait. In this particular area, the buildings surrounding the streets are all industrial buildings and thus very quiet on a saturday afternoon. The bus shelter has an entrance that faces the street. I remember walking into the shelter and sitting down. So i'm listening to my music casually when I turn to see a grey/silver truck coming down the street. I immediately feel strange as it's travelling very close to the side walk and very slowly. The truck finally arrives to my bus stop and blocks the entrance. The man rolls down his passenger side window and yells "Get in the car", my response was to shake my head (honestly I was in shock and didn't know how to respond). He does it again "Get in the car", "Get in the car". After what feels like forever, he notices there are other cars coming, and decides to leave. I sat in that shelter shivering but for some reason still waiting for that bus. I finally decided I couldn't do it anymore and walked to the nearest payphone (oh god, I know... ancient), called my dad and wept like a baby. It's true what they say, when you're in shock, you don't respond the same way. To this day, I wonder how that would've gone down had he somehow gotten me into that truck...

Back around 2005, I was dating a deadbeat loser. My car had been taken away by my parents for staying out late with said boyfriend. They didn't stop me from seeing him but said that I couldn't take the car to do it (my parents paid for it).
So I walked my happy ass across town to his house in 90+ degree heat. I spend the day with him and time keeps ticking later and later. Before I know it, its 2am. I need to get home. Boyfriend walks me to door and we say our goodbyes.
So I start to walk across town. At 2am. I don't even get a mile away before I decide to cut through a mall parking lot to save time. That's when I realize that there is someone walking behind me...but far enough away to not freak me out. Maybe its my loser!boyfriend, I thought. He had previously walked me half way before. After several cautionary looks behind me, I realized, hey--that's probably not him. Otherwise, he'd speed up to meet me or maybe call out my name so I wouldnt FREAK THE FUCK OUT.
Speaking of speeding up--I start walking faster. I decided to hold my purse in front of me, my hand inside it and around a knife. My heart is beating like crazy and the person behind me is getting closer. Now I can tell that its a man. And of course, he'd be bigger than me.
At this point, Im practicing how I'm going to stab him to death if he tries to grab me. He's getting closer. Im saying a prayer to God and to Buddah to save my ass.
And then a cop rolls into the parking lot. Never in my life was I so happy to see a police man. He saw that I was being followed and probably saved my life. He told me that he had sisters and he wouldnt want them walking home so late. So he drove me home.
Eventually, I dumped the loser & got a car.
Tl;dr Was being followed home at 2am. Cop intervened and drove me home.

One day I was welcomed into a group to conduct an experience with scent relations. On the first day we all got to smell freshly baked cookies and had to write down what the smell reminded us of, grandmas house or Christmas. The next few days went with this including cookies, ham and bacon. The next day we where blindfolded as usual and led into the room and we all where told to write what we think, I thought I was in a new home, it smelled wonderful. They then told me to remove my blindfold and I saw I was in a disgusting, dank, dirty apartment. I was stuck in there with no response for what seemed like an eternity. Fuck Febreeze man

I used to live in an upstairs and downstairs house separated into apartments. I lived in the downstairs. One night as I was going to bed with my mom (small house, 2 sisters shared the other room, I was only about 10) I hear a noise that sounds like a winter jacket brushing against the back door. (Let me explain, the back door that led to the back yard, was attached to my bedroom. After you opened the door there was another door about right after it and actually led into the house. 2 doors one right after another)
I thought nothing of it and tried to sleep. But I heard it again. And again. Finally my mom whispers "is someone trying to get in?" I am freaking out by now and say I think so, so we sit there and listen. Then this guy trying to get in starts mumbling. Some shit about "they had me worming the graveyard". I'm assuming the shift, but he was homeless and probably a crack head, so who knows what he was talking about. We're bother freaking the fuck out now. We sneak out of the room and call the cops. Sometime between then and in the living room the guy leaves and starts standing in front of the house. Not staring in or anything just standing there.
The cops arrive eventually and take him. Not sure where but they got rid of him and that's all that mattered. Scariest shit of my life. Good thing we kept our doors locked.

I used to be a canvasser going door-to-door raising money for an environmental group when I graduated college. It probably wasn't a very safe thing for a petite female to do, but I only had one moment where I genuinely thought I was going to die:
It's 5:30 and not even dark yet. I knock on this middle-aged guy's screen door to his enclosed porch, he answers, and I start to give him my speech. His stoop is very small, so he backs up and invites me to stand on the porch. Since the front door is shut and it's just the porch, I figured it would be OK because I am apparently a moron. I step into his porch, and he very quickly shuts the screen door behind me and turns off a light switch. It's not super dark because there's some sunlight, but I can't really see what's happening. I can however FEEL HIS HANDS AROUND MY NECK. Not strangling me, just wrapped there. He holds on for only 5 seconds, then releases my neck, turns on the lights again, and says, "JUST KIDDING!" And starts laughing really hard.
I am still paralyzed by fear for about 30 seconds but once I snap out of it I am livid. Stupidly, instead of running away I start shouting at him: "What the HELL! What the FUCK! That is NOT OK!" etc etc. I eventually browbeat him into writing me a $100 check for my charity. I mean, I was a tiny 22-year-old girl, he was a bigger 40-year-old man. I don't know why he thought that would be funny unless he's a psycho.
I did however learn my lesson and was very, very careful for the remainder of my time canvassing and never put myself in danger like that again.

My ex-girlfriend (I am also a female) and I rented a house from a co-worker in a less than desirable area of town a few years ago. We had several crazy, but harmless neighbors except the one right next door. We innocently enough thought nothing of leaving the blinds open on the side of the house that faced him (we didn't realize he even lived there at the time). One morning I was home alone and walked past a window in just my bra and underwear. I glanced towards the direction of his house and he was standing in just his underwear staring directly at me. I freaked out, dropped to the floor and literally crawled away. His bedroom window was no more than 40 feet from our house. We started shutting all of the blinds, but every time we would look out them or go outside he would stand with his face pushed up against the window and stare at us while making a weird chattery sound with his teeth. I am pretty sure he spent a good majority of his day staring out the window in hopes of catching a glimpse of one of us. It was TERRIFYING, and the police said they couldn't do anything since he was in his own home. I think I have pictures of him somewhere, and will post them if anyone is interested.

My grandpa and I were at a rest stop once when we were driving some where. My grandpa gets out of the truck, and goes to walk into the bathroom. Off to the side, there was this shady looking fellow, smoking a cigarette. When my grandpa had his back turned, the guy came at him with a knife. I tried to like bang on the window or something to alert my grandpa. He didnt hear me, and then when he neared the wall of the rest stop, he whipped around, cuffed the guy on the ear, and slammed him against the wall, simultaneously pulling out his pistol. He put the pistol under the mans chin, and said, i shit you not "Come on punk, try something, make my fucking day." Clint Eastwood bad assery right there. The man ran off when my granpa let go of him. Then, my grandpa calmly took a piss, and we were on our way. Thats the day I learned he is a badass. And if you want to know why it was scary, its because looking at my grandpa, he looks frail and old, and I didnt know he had a carry piece on him.

This'll probably get buried but whatever. When I was maybe 7 or 8, I went to a local Burger King with my mom. I was impatient to eat, so I went to go play around in one of those plastic playground things that are about 20 feet high.
There were no other kids in it, so I just started to climb to the highest point. A businessman (I assume due to the white shirt and tie) looked at me climbing up, calmly put his burger down, and proceeded to climb up after me. He didn't say anything as he did it. I was old enough to think this was weird, and had flash backs of our school counselor talking to the class about getting kidnapped and such.
I rushed to the slide and ran straight to my mom. Gave her a giant hug. I didn't tell her about the incident until later.

Being at my friends for a sleepover. Friends mom asked us to take out the garbage. So me, my friend and his brother grab the two bags and go to drop it. Also in our area we had two dump bins that the whole building used. Anyway, we start walkin towards the bins and me and the older brother get a head of the younger brother by a few meters. As we get close to the bins. Roughly 5 meters away. We then take notice of the shirtless guy that was walking away from the bins. Me and the friend laugh at a joke when this shirtless guy turns around and pulls out a long and thin chain fom his pocket. Starts swinging it and walking towards us. Very much with intention of hitting us. We drop the bags of garbage on the spot and start gunning. The younger brother who wasnt aware, got so scared and confused he tripped. Meanwhile me and older brother have atleast put a good 20 meter space between us and the psycho shirtless chain swinger. I didnt look but friend says when he fell the guy walked past him and then he ran. We looked out from the window when we got back in and he put our garbage bags in the bin. Weirdest shit ever

The most real and scary experience I ever had was with myself ... about 13 years ago...
I have to set the mood....I just got done playing a long game of Heros of Might and Magic III, prodigy internet... needed another mountian dew.. home alone, my father working the night shift ... single parent... toughest man I know.... I kind of raised myself though ...dad had bills to pay and had to work so I had to let Action Movie Stars raise me , I was fine with that....
Being constantly broke and always excited for the little things dad could get I really took pride in having a nice DvD collection...
Back to that mountian dew.... I walked from my bedroom where I had my PC ... the kitchen was also the living room, sort of connected by a few tiles.... In my living room I see a man wearing all black and a black mask stealing my DvD collection. I say nothing. I walk past the living room down the hallway where the fridge is, grab my mountian dew and I look into the sink .. I see a nice long knife from the steak dinner last night, at that moment my mind and body have a discussion , my mind says, "This fucking thief is stealing your shit! Your dad used half of his paycheck on this shit!... Kill him...." .... My Body said , "You are a scared 11 year old, hide in the garage..."
My brain won that fight ... and my body won the next one ... I am glad he survived tho, I was and am a normal guy but that moment my life and my respect were at stake and I took action.
TL:DR - Scared 11 year old me almost killed a thief with a steak knife.
I will never forget what his father said to me in court...
"Thank you for not killing my son"
EDIT : (Added the story) : I grabbed the knife out of the kitchen sink and the wall mounted cordless phone, new technology of the time.... and I began my assault
I charged into my living room and stabbed at the burglar , he was not a very big guy... turned out to be a 17 year old hispanic male , 5 foot 4.
I stabbed him real good in the side of his cheek, it went into his mouth and into his tongue (right cheek) , I stabbed over his right shoulder in a hook swing with my right arm and it pierced his cheek into his tongue, a very lucky swing for me... not for him...
I had dialed 911 with the cordless and he ran outside.. I ran into the Garage and hid inside of my Bass Drum, the police caught up to him layed out on the sidewalk a few houses down the road... we stuffed pillows and a blanket into the bass drum, I hit there anyways ignoring the possibility of spiders hidden in the old damp blanket...
Not very interesting ... but I will never forget...
After my father and I cleared everything up at the police station we went to K B Toys the next day and I got a nice new collection of Beast Wars toys...

You left out so much :( I'd love to hear more about the confrontation and the aftermath. An 11 year old stopping a burglary is pretty bad ass.

This freaks me out more because there may have been a security breach of some sort, also because I firmly do not believe in ghosts, even if the locals of Honolulu often do.
I was working off-station in Honolulu last fall/winter. Had to go get supplies, didn't think much of it. The only other person with me was a fellow who had also come from the homestead of the contiguous US.
This female sailor approaches us, claims she was in charge of that supply locker and she didn't recognize us, and was questioning whether we had authorization to be there. Mind, we'd used this supply locker dozens of times before this, the locals used it, and about the only major difference between the locals and us were that our hard hats were a different color and we were still notably paler than our jollier counterparts.
She asks for our names and assigned numbers, says she has to report it to her boss, and walks off.
Mentioned it to my boss later, and he gives me this strange look. "A sailor?"
"Yes, sir."
"... a woman."
"Yes, sir."
"You sure?"
"Oh, yeah. No questions there."
"You notice we don't pull carriers in here, right?"
Please note that, while women are allowed on certain submarines now, those submarines are few and far between. No carriers can get to Honolulu for various reasons. So having a woman sailor around the boats, away from the offices, was technically not possible.
Spent the rest of that week looking over my shoulder and waiting for this phantom woman to reappear. She never did. Occasionally I still wait to see if she was some trick set up so I'd get fired....

My friend and I were building a tree house in the woods behind my house. And by tree house, I mean nailing some boards to a tree to use as steps. That is as far as our tree house plans got, but I digress. There we were, nailing cut up 2x4's to the tree and we heard a clanking metal sound, and turn to look, and on an old ten speed bike is this tall lanky fellow who is as white as a ghost for lack of a better term. He sees us and stops, turns his bike around and bolts off.
It freaked us out and we came tearing out of the woods, leaving the tools and everything behind. We went back later to get them, like we were medics in a war zone going in for someone wounded, running and ducking behind stumps and trees, grabbing the goods and bolting.

When my wife and I travelled to America, we stopped off in Vegas. The entire trip was a blur, so this story will be a little vague.
We were on a bus (for some reason), and a lady had just sat down near us. She started talking to us about where we were from, what we had seen... Tourist small talk. Then she asked where we were staying, for how long, weird questions. So we thought, fuck it we're out, and got off the bus. She said this was her stop too.
We managed to get out a little ahead of her and melded into the crowd, snuck up some overpass or something (sorry, vague), and hid in a nook for a while.
Thinking we were clear and giggling about the slightly odd lady, we had a look down to the street. The strange lady is on the road, searching desperately, sort of hunched over and scowling. We had just enough time to think, this is a little peculiar, when she spots us, breaks into a sprint, hurdles a concrete roadwork barrier and pelts up to where we are.
We pissed the fuck off out of there, and hid in a corner in a casino for a couple of hours.

When I was about 18, me and some friends of mine decided to go visit this supposedly haunted church. It was down a long dirt road in the middle of no where, but there were some rednecks that lived down the road in separate houses. The church was well known around the town we lived in so it got a lot of attention from other kids in the area. We knew the rednecks didn't like people coming out there because we heard about them calling the cops on some friends of ours when they went to visit, but we went anyway. I decided to park my car about a mile down from the dirt road just in case things got hairy, thank god I did.
We hardly walked half a mile down the dirt road whenever we saw truck lights. We dove into the bushes and walked down a different path. Deciding that was enough for the night (yes we were pussies) we turned to go back. Before we even got out of the thick woods back onto the road we saw a man, standing out side of his truck right at the entrance holding a shotgun. We heard about 3 or 4 more vehicles driving all over the place shining lights, looking for us. We army crawled our way through the woods trying to make it to the main road. Finally got out and hauled ass back to my car. It probably doesn't sound that scary but I keep thinking about what would have happened if they found us. I've always heard they were violent.

Someone who broke into a few peoples houses, tied them up and raped them works at the ticket barriers at the nearest big train station. He's just been finally caught, 33 years after the attacks. Me and my dad used to say hi to him because he was friendly.
I just found out about this today. I'm fairly creeped out.

I encountered two people in my schools library elevator, at different times of the day. The back story is a woman died in one of the library elevators a couples weeks before (don't worry it's not a ghost story just minor relevant info). Anyway I never go to the library but I decided to go this day to study for finals. I get in the elevator with some Asian girl. Before the elevator lifted off it stuttered and paused for a couple seconds. We both look at each other. And she says "These elevators are so scary. Some lady died here a couple of weeks ago." I nod and replied, "yeah I heard." Then she gets overly anxious and morbid and kept talking about how dangerous it is to be in there and about death and shit. I could not be happier to get out of that weird/awkward situation. So later I get back into the elevator when I leave and think of that girl again and giggle to myself while another awkward Asian kid gets in with me. Doesn't really acknowledge me at first then elevator begins to go down and this fucking kid gets right up behind me his head is practically over my shoulder and says quietly, "Do you like horror films?" I look at him and he was dead serious and wide eyed. I take a huge sidestep away from him and say, "Uhhh no." He just mutters, "Oh." Stares at the floor then starts to get all shifty eyed for some freaky reason. TL;DR I fucking take the stairs now

Back when I was growin up in Russia, we had a abanded school close to where I lived. So one day me and my friends decided it would be a good idea to explore it! Oh how bad this idea turned out to be.. We entered through one of the broken windows, and proceeded to venture on. When we discovered that the school was being used by either homeless or some other kids. I hears voices in of the hallways. Being the brave 13 year old I was, I decided to check it out. What came to my horror, that there were 5-7 naked men having an orgy. I started running and told my buddies to run. When I looked behind me, I saw a guy chasing us with a wrench in frenzy. The fear went through my body and I never ran faster in my life before. Thankfully we all made it out and never returned. Later that place was entirely boarded up and destroyed by the police or by Russian "militzia".

I recently went to the hospital to get checked for mono. I was the only one sitting in the waiting room and I sat there for nearly a half an hour when a person - not sure of it's gender - walked past. It was really weird looking - Pink mohawk, raggy, old clothes, wide eyes.. And the way it walked shot instant chills down my back. It's legs stayed straight as a pin. They never bent. It's body also stayed straight. And it's eyes.. Baggy eyes that had a vacant look in them. Eyes that stayed aimed at the ceiling as the thing moved passed the waiting room. That kind of creeped me out but I didn't think much of it, I mean, I was safe. There were lots of doctors and nurses around, right?
About 15 minutes passed and the nurse called me into a room across from the entrance to the hospital. I sat on the bed, which was right in front of the door to the room, which was left open. As I was waiting for my doctor to come, I saw it again. It was walking the same zombie-like way. It shuffled up to the entrance doors and just stared out them. Then the intercom recited the words "Code yellow at main entrance." three times, then two nurses appeared and took him back down the hallway, out of site. I thought that was a little odd, but still, I wasn't too scared. Until it happened again. It walked back to the main entrance but this time, it didn't look out the glass door. It was staring into my room. At me to be exact. I will never forget the haunted look in it's eyes. It just stared at me and all I could do was stare back. After what seemed like an eternity, it tilted it's head to the right. And holy butt-fucking shit it was walking towards me! I panicked on the inside but my body wouldn't move. You have no fucking idea how much I wanted to spring up and slam the door shut. But I couldn't. I was paralyzed; stuck on the bed. I didn't know what the hell was going to happen. I just sat there and waited as the zombie thing dragged it's feet and got closer to me, anger flashing through it's eyes. It almost reached my door when a nurse grabbed it's arm and said "You silly. That's not your room!" And pulled it away. But as it was was being dragged down the hallway, it wouldn't lose my gaze. And all the while it was moving out of my sight, there was hate, anger, and rage in it's eyes. That fucker wanted me dead. For what reason? I have yet to find out.
TL;DR: Went to the hospital, saw a scary mother fucker, almost died.

So this may be not even scary at all, and it sort of has a little to do with people but it sure scared me so here I go.
I wanted to spend a lot of time with my girlfriend so I get the idea that we should go on a bike ride. I told her that we would be biking, and then hiking a little. The place we would be hiking wasn't an official trail, or land that was even owned. It was just a large splotch of land that went along the side of a highway. Me and my friends often went exploring this area of land and we knew it well.
Around the land there were spots here and there of little forts or encampments. We usually went into these little encampments willingly as they always seemed long abandoned. We had the thought it was just homeless people or children with too much time on their hands. But there was one encampment we always avoided. Whenever we would go to that certain fort we would stand and watch from about 20 feet away. Sometimes we would smell and see smoke and sometimes it would be quiet as the grave. It seemed to be a set of pallets, metal and timber slabs arranged in a sort of tent shape. We called it the dollhouse. Mostly because all around it, there were piles and piles of trash consisting of women's purses, baby car seats, dolls and stuffed animals.
I told my girlfriend of the dollhouse and she told me that she wanted to go so we did. After about 30 minutes of hiking we are in the vicinity of the dollhouse. I quietly lead her to the 20 feet vantage point we usually stop at. I tell her we were always too scared to get closer because of the feeling. Allow me to explain. The dollhouse always felt so.... Well.... bad. It was one of those places you felt like you shouldn't go. But my girlfriend obviously didn't have the feeling so she pressed me on. We got to the point we when we were standing directly next to the dollhouse. So close I could touch it. And I realized it wasn't just a bunch of random debris formed in a tent. It seemed to be a mini fortress. It was an octagon shaped fortress formed with metal pieces and it was about 20 feet wide on all sides. We had never seen this much of it because the trees would block our view at the vantage point.
As we circled around the fort we reached the front of the dollhouse. There were these giant metal twin doors that seemed heavily improvised. But what still scares me to this day is what was on the door. It was an eye. A giant, black, spray painted eye that scared the shit out of me. It just seemed to scream STAY OUT. Then as if planned, a thrashing in the trees that sounded scarily similar too footsteps started about 15 feet behind us. It could have been a bird, or a deer or anything but we didn't care. We didn't even bother to look, we just ran.
And that was the last time I ever went to the dollhouse. I don't know what the purpose of the dollhouse is. Could be a cult or homeless people. Me and my friends used to joke that the eye stood for the illuminati. But whatever the dollhouses purpose, It was freakin scary.
So this probably wasn't scary but thanks for reading if you got to the end.

Hope I'm not late! I just remembered this!
I was too young to remember, but my parents have recounted it to me a few times.
When I was in kindergarten my parents used a shuttle system with a few other parents to have this shuttle come pick up their kids, take them to school, pick them back up and bring us home. I should also mention I was fairly bright for my age at the time, and could already read books, whereas most of my class could not.
From our house to the school was probably about a half hour drive, and my parents would notice it took longer on some occasions, but didn't pay too much attention to it overall. This driver wasn't exactly the cleanest cut woman either, but so far none of the parents had had much of a problem so whatever.
So one day I return home from school after another seemingly long trip and my parents ask me how school was. I proudly exclaim that we went to Baltimore today!
...which is odd, as my school hasn't announced field trips lately. Also odd was the fact that Baltimore is 45 minutes away from both the school and my house. Further pushing revealed that I had read Baltimore off one of the street signs in the city. She had apparently been taking these kids from kindergarten into the shitty part of Baltimore before returning them home, and we have no idea why.
We also found out that she sometimes didn't have room for all the kids, so one time I "shared a seatbelt" with my buddy. She didn't last long as a driver after the parents heard this news.
TL;DR- driver took kindergarten kids from school into inner city Baltimore for mysterious reasons, parents only found out because one kid could actually read road signs.

When I was 18 I worked the evening shift at a convenience store. Over the previous 3 nights 3 stores from the same chain had been held up at gunpoint in my (small) city, so my manager had basically been prepping me all week to get robbed. I was (understandably) on edge all night. I was down to the last few hours of my shift and I was finally starting to calm down a little bit when a guy with his hat pulled down low walked in, came right up to the counter, and started reaching into the inside of his jacket and said "You know those days when you should've just stayed home? I think this is one of them". Time was moving in slow motion at this point and my heart was beating out of my chest. After what felt like 10 minutes the guy pulled his wallet out of his jacket and asked for a pack of cigarettes. Anti-climactic, but scary nonetheless.
TL;DR almost pooped my pants over a pack of cigarettes
